    The Switch's popularity feels a lot more healthy than the Wii. People aren't just buying it because of a few casual titles only to dismiss it not long after. The last time there was a perfect balance between the core Nintendo titles, third party games, and more casual games was probably the DS.

    • @witherwraithmc
      @witherwraithmc 10 днів тому +70

      I'd personally almost say the switch is MORE healthy than the DS was, since the DS(as far as i know) was cheaper than the Switch to buy multiples of for families, and the Switch has less casual games than the DS did imo.

      Yeah that's what I've been saying, Switch sold 300 millions more software and that's without pack-in titles. People actually buying games on it, and most of the time they're actually proper games and now just 2 dollar shovelware your parents saw and thought it's gonna be just like Wii Sport

      @@TakisEnjoyer It also sold about 40 million more consoles? It sold 1.2 billion units of software which, in terms of "average games sold per console sold", is about 9 games a console. Equal to the Wii's proportional game sales, actually. Impressive but plausible would have been an average of 12 (1.68 billion)-15 (2.1 billion).

      While I do not expect the switch 2 to be the next wii u, there will certainly be a drop off of 10s of millions of sales over its life compared to switch. This might seem fine to casual consumers, but share holders will of course once again put the fire to the feet of Nintendo as they will be expecting repeated success

      It was hubris on Nintendo's part. You don't just get to announce we're past horse power and for it to be that way. Nintendo alienated itself, the industry went the other way. We're at that point now though of diminishing returns, where you don't need the best or latest hardware to have your games look good and the cost of game development is becoming a liability. The Switch can also still run (inferior) ports of modern games. Wii simply couldn't run the game engines. It lacked all of the big AAA games from other developers, which is why it wasn't an option for serious gamers. This tarnished Nintendo's reputation, which came to bite them back with the Wii U, when they couldn't reproduce another short-lived gimmick hype.
      I understand though they were ready to try something else after the Gamecube.

    • @BigaloMax
      @BigaloMax 9 днів тому +2

      @@desamsterit wasn't Hubris , it was emulating the competition. They saw the ps2 being at number 1 despite being THE weakest of the 3 consoles and more expensive then the gamecube going ahead only cause it had a gimmick called DVD player and so they figured they would sell more if they focused on having a gimmick then competing on raw power alone and in that regard the Wii did alot better . However balancing the next consoles (3DS and wiiU) was catastrophic a problem that sony also had whit the ps4 and vita but where nintendo picked to abandon the Home console and focus on Handheld , sony picked to abandon the Handheld console instead which why we dont have a new psp iteration.

    • @desamster
      @desamster 9 днів тому +2

      @@BigaloMax PS2 was the weakest but it wasn't a generation behind. One sidedly declaring the hardware race was over and power no longer mattered was hubris. Wii was a severely underpowered, handicapped system. It did so well because of a gimmick, but that wore off and then Nintendo was behind the curve. It is coming to fruition now 2 decades later. It was bound to happen sometime, just not when Nintendo declared it prematurely,

      Not a stretch at all imo. He was speaking with hindsight at the time too. The introduction and refinement of 3D can’t be replicated again

    6:23 Wii has 9:1 game attachment ratio, which are very similar to PS3 and 360's attach ratios, this lie has existed for well over a decade, even though the numbers are easy to find. 101M units, 900+ Million software units.

Wii leaned a little too heavily in the casuals and it left behind more traditional gamers who tend to buy a lot of games. Nintendo’s top selling games on Switch are some of their greatest games they’ve ever made from their most high profile franchises. It’s a much healthier place to be in because those type of games (ie. BotW, Mario Odyssey, New Horizons, etc.) build much stronger long term fans that will want to come back for more and explore other games of similar quality. There has to be a reason to buy a Switch 2 that goes beyond it being the same experience but with better graphics. At the same time, if they do something radically different, they risk disappointing people with something they could perceive as “gimmicky” and in the way of the beefed up switch experience they think they want.

      Well, with the Nintendo Difference in full swing, I've been noticing the decline in 3rd party support. Street Fighter hasn't been on a Nintendo platform since Alpha 2 on SNES, and Madden NFL stopped getting Nintendo releases since Madden NFL 13 on Wii U. Nintendo also missed out on a bunch of cross-gen releases on the Wii U, like Destiny, DOA5 Last Round and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 of all games. I think Nintendo should design the platform in running the newest Destiny, Persona and Street Fighter games, as they all skipped Nintendo platforms recently. Just make a system to allow Nintendo fanbases to play way more than what the SNES and Switch got. If it happens and is done right, then imagine a future where Nintendo is on par with its rivals.
      Also, Nintendo will have to make their "experimental" controllers optional if they want far more games with traditional control schemes. Nintendo didn't make a 6-button arcade controller during the GameCube days, but if they do it with the next Nintendo platform, that would give more fighting game developers an incentive to make games for it.

      @@AeyGee Your forgetting the NES to the SNES, Gameboy to Gameboy Advance, and the gamecube was'nt a sequel to the N64. But if your going to count that anyway then then obviously the gamecube to Wii was a success as well. But even ignoring all that things are much different than before. Their priorites are exactly where they need to be to make the Switch 2 a success, including having games ready to go at launch. We know a 3d Mario is most likely for that plus we've got two big Nintendo series coming next year that could also be launch titles depending on when the console comes out. And that's just what we know of, it's already been said that Nintendo likes to hold onto games until the right time. To put it simply people expecting Nintendo to fail won't be getting it this time.

    I gotta say i was completely fed up with how obsolete Wii was in 2011, with its blurry VGA resolutions and outdated graphics. Sold mine and bought a PS3 slim and never looked back.
    Switch today, even if even older than Wii was back then, compares much better. The graphics are beautiful on their own and still sometimes impressive. Games are still coming up in big quantities and are very good for most of the time, a completely different situation from Wii, which received a ton of shovelware and little else from 3rd parties.

      That horizon of diminishing returns that Iwata spoke of is much more real today than it was back then. The difference in a top-tier Switch game versus a top-tier PS4 game is a smaller gap than Wii to PS3. And if we’re talking too-tier PS5 game, they’re now so expensive and require such a high level of graphical polish that developers aren’t able to put out as many games as they used to in the past. This is why Nintendo is consistently releasing games when Sony isn’t.

    Even now people complain about Nintendo's consoles not being onpar with the other two, but fail to realize why they do it and why it works. As early as the Gameboy other companies released more powerful handhelds but got crushed by Nintendo's, because it was cheaper and because it was'nt as powerful it had a longer battery life. No matter how powerful a console is it means nothing if your making it hard for people to buy. This is also why even with new more powerful handheld's coming out the Switch is doing better, because it's alot more accessible for people. Making the change to this direction was the smartest thing Nintendo's ever done.
    They've also learned from their mistakes, the biggest one I'd say is how they handle third parties. Even going into their next console their making a good effort to make game development on it easy for third parties. To the point many of those companies are really excited for Switch 2.

    Was Nintendo sticking to established strengths and innovation over visually impressive features because that's how they perceived the future of gaming...
    Or were they consistently disappointing in areas others were impressing so when they finally decide to catch up; we all automatically are impressed?
    That's just a thought experiment.

Gamecube and N64 sold ~20 and ~30 million units respectively before the massive sales of Wii, and yet the Wii U sold _even fewer_ than that (~13M units) especially after Nintendo had properly established their IPs across the Wii and the handheld devices. And the Wii U _did_ have a novel way of interacting between screens (though not as novel as the Wii) and introduced the off-TV play (the portable aspect). The Wii U failed most probably bc of poor marketing and consumer confusion. It's essentially a Switch with limited range, so in theory it should've been as successful. @@benmalsky9834 none of them reached 10 mil... just under 8 mil for Twilight Princess on Wii but if you combine the GameCube release it's over 10 mil i believe... Kirby has always been in the 3-5 mil range... Forgotten Land on Switch broke that streak though

      @@samcandles yeah and it's crazy to think animal crossing city folk only did just under 5 mil on Wii now here we are a few gens later and have a 45 mil seller Animal Crossing game on Switch, although COVID did boost sales for that game... but Smash Bros even on Wii did 13ish million now it's a 30 mil seller on Switch, Super Mario Galaxy did 12.5 mil on Wii and Odyssey did 28 mil on Switch... the numbers have just skyrocketed on Switch for said IP, Zelda is another example...

    GameCube just failed with Normies, because normies wanted a DVD Player and GCN didn't had it... plus, GCN was the hardest to be pirated, that is all.

    Bring back dual screens, that's all i really want from switch 2. So many games died or changed on a fundamental level because they left the 3ds behind. Just thinking about it i probably spent more time observing the map in the original splatoon than in splatoon 2 and 3 combined. So many flanks i feel i could have avoided if i could notice in the corner of my eye them inking a trail on the map to get me.

    No idea where the myth of Wii having a low software attachment rate comes from. Using math with the source that you even showed in this very video, the Wii has an attachmemt rate of 9.07 games sold per console, while the Switch has 8.74 sold per console. The Switch is still good but its actually lower than the Wii.
