That's what I thought too. As horrible as this horrible, evil killer is, thank goodness he didn't kill the little girl. As a mother, I would say to my murderer, please spare my kids!
It was more logical at the time because he was nowhere to be seen. After time passes and he's still not been located at all, it becomes more likely he's deceased. When it comes to serial killers, the only real way to catch them is red handed, forensics, or most likely eye witnesses. Much better for the public to draw a logical conclusion then let the news publish about an unknown serial killer.
Huge amount of police work where conclusive evidence isn't found is usually "I dunno, maybe it's like this, it's most likely I guess" territory when cases are closed.
I'm so glad they found Mike and gave that little girl closure, she probably grew up being told her dad was a monster, she probably couldn't remember anything about the killer but now she knows her daddy would never do something so horrible, he didn't turn her life upside down and did love her.
Imagine getting murdered and then having your name dragged through the dirt. Having people be so stupid and spreading false information. That would suck penis
@Anonymous Commenter What the hell? So you're okay with abusive men? Way to victim blame there. @@Cheekfats Detectives aren't stupid, and knowing some, I can tell you that they DO care. They do the best that they can with the evidence that they have.
I guess theoretically he could've left the forest, dropped off his daughter, and then driven back and left his truck there. That doesn't make much sense though if he was trying to flee the area surely he wouldn't leave his truck. It was pretty obvious to me that because they didn't find him or his truck immediately he had been killed as well
Mercifully, she was only a tender two years of age, a mere toddler. I say mercifully because memories don't really begin to form until after the age of 4. Her brain wasn't developed enough to be able to retain solid information about what happened.
When a Child witness something like that they go through alot of stress on the mind and as a defensive measure the mind blocks those events to protect the girl's mental state. So even when she grows up she won't be able to recall much of what happened as her memory is fragmented of the event and can only recall disturbing visuals and sounds that destroyed her psyche. As a result all those broken disturbing visuals and sounds she witness turns into what her brain can only translate the event of "moMmy Is iN tHe tReEs". When she grows older she would need to see a expert therapist to be able to translate what in the hell happened. and since he was a toddler what ever happened is probably trapped in her in the back of her head unable to wrap her head around it.

“Mommy’s in the trees” gave me the impression she was hung, or something it’s highly possible that the killer killed the dad as the mum and kid took off to hide potentially in a tree but I still don’t understand why there was blood on the passenger side of the car and the letter in the dads handwriting
I have a theory. The dad fights off the killer as the mom and kid run away. He is stabbed near the truck and is dying, meanwhile the killer leaves the dad to die and runs off to chase the kid and mom. The dad(hoping that the mom and kid get away safely) knows he is dying and wants to tell his wife that he loves her one last time. So he climbs in the truck and writes it down so she will see it when it's all over.
No. The child was saying "she's in the trees" the same way that a grown person would say "she's in the woods" or "she's in the forest". The child probably just saw their mother being taken into the forest (trees) and not come back.
Its insane how the cops didnt link The fact that there were four other couples that had been killed in the same area. Also, didnt they search the forest with dogs? Wouldnt they be able to find Mike even if he was buried?

I’ve been straight up bingeing this channel for over a week now! It’s crazy that I’m coming across this particular video on the 37th anniversary of Mike & Diana’s murder!
Another story from the pacific northwest that should deserve a video: the soap lady of Lake Crescent. Her body was found soapified after three years of being underwater. And due to the conditions of the lake, it was the perfect conditions to make her body soapy which eventually floated up to the surface and the questions started popping up. How did she end up on the bottom of the lake? Who murdered her this way and tied her up before throwing her into the lake? What were their motives? Fascinating story and I visited the lake, never would've guessed that there's such a dark mystery tied to it. (Maybe let's get MrBallen to cover this story???)

#1: I don't necessarily believe that Mike was buried. This stuff happens way too often, where searchers overlook evidence or remains, usually because they searched right around the area, but didn't hit that specific spot. His bones were probably scattered because of animals. #2: I think it's pretty clear that Mike was killed in the forest first, then killer came to where mommy and baby were waiting in the truck, killed Diana in the front seat, then dragged her body under the tree where it was found. Crystal saw all of this, and, of course, was in shock and only 2yrs old, so she probably blocked out the murderers face, but she saw her mom left under the tree, then the bad guy grabbed her and took her to the kmart. It's really unfortunate that they didnt have security cameras there.

He was most likely the killer. Grid searches are notorious for "thoroughly searching" an area sometimes multiple times and finding nothing. Then a random hiker finds the body right in the center of the search area. It's a lot easier for the police to claim he was buried than admit maybe they didn't do a thorough enough search. But the previous couple wasn't buried. So breaks from the MO. And connecting 2 other couples that were killed (no tube sock in their cases) across decades and thousands of square miles of PNW forest is a stretch to say the least. Maybe he killed the couple because one got stuck in his trap and he panicked. Or who knows. But more probable than not he killed them (much less personal way than stabbing 17x) and at least his wife and himself.
I wonder if anyone attempted hypnosis on the girl when she got older? While not all police depts think it is viable, someones memories do emerge. It is said our brains contain all we have ever seen and heard; we just do not consciously recall it all. RIP to her parents and all the victims of this killer.
A problem is that while we may remember far more than we think we do, memory itself is surprisingly unreliable: It's not like a static video recording that always stays the same. Rather we remember things by, essentially, firing certain neurons in a certain order - making the brain repeat what went through it the first time, if you will. That order can change over time and if it does, we can't tell the difference between false memories and real ones. Because, technically, there isn't one. Not only can we badly misremember things, it's actually possible to convince people that they remember events that never happened just by suggesting that they did. Like, if the hypnotist asks: "Did he have brown hair?", that might _cause_ her to remember him as having brown hair even if he really didn't.
Im also for hypnosis. Never heard for a false memories under hypnosis, they may occur in your normal conscious state, where your brain can be tricked. Subconscious can't be controlled or changed/tricked into false memories in my opinion.
@@gavinfairbanks They clearly have some problem with couples, and it's somehow tied to the women (given the tube socks). Disgruntled, jealousy, etc could be the motives to kill the couples.

The bonus thing in your videos is cool, John. As are your stories. When one involves a DAUGHTER, though, my heart just gets BROKEN. I have 2 of my own, and the thought of ANYTHING bad happening to them has been known to keep me awake nights. I don't think they could ever understand what it meant to ME how it felt when they would cry over something and I held them, or the first time each of them looked up at me and said "I love you, daddy". I don't care how tough a male IS, when you look into their little eyes and faces, you're simply NOT a man if you don't fall HARD for them - you can't help it, and it hurts when they get older and move on, but you're so PROUD of them when they do. Being a father is maybe the hardest role a guy can take on.

It's definitely disturbing when you hear a story like this about an area where you live, and that more has happened. Though I have to admit I have no idea where the heck they were hiking around in the Nisqually area, because most of that land is owned by the Army and is fenced off. There is I guess a decent chunk of it that belongs to the tribe as well, the way I always thought most of that was tidal plain. But then in that case, I'm not sure what the heck he thought he was doing trapping on tribal land, he didn't look like he was part of the tribe (though you can't always tell). Edit: Though now I see that his truck was found in an area out by Eatonville just north of Mount Rainier AKA Mount Tahoma. That's way on the other side of the freeway/ hwy 99, and definitely within the general vicinity of going to Spanaway on the way north again. Anyway it's bizarre because that's about 15 minutes from where I live. It makes me wonder if they found her at the Kmart in Olympia or one in Tacoma or Lakewood or something. Now I'm going to have to look this one up. Edit:. Ooooh, the Kmart was in Spanaway! To me that means that the killer lives in that area, because otherwise it's completely in the opposite direction from any of these other places.
@@hollowgonzalo4329 It might be "smarter," but it's geographic analysis of crime patterns that has been the major advancement in crime solving since DNA, precisely because of quirks in how humans operate within comfort zones they DON'T leave. We had a case where I am in a red state with a very active death penalty--not active enough, but definitely not somewhere you want to get caught having just killed two police officers on camera during a traffic stop because you knew they were likely going to find your arrest warrant for murder!!! Ironically, that wasn't the particular warrant they'd found, that one not having quite caught up to him yet, but either way he decided to kill the police to escape. There followed a very intense week and a half of them searching through particular neighborhoods he was known to frequent, with most of us on the outside thinking surely he had the sense to hit the gas and go right after he did it and there was no way he was still going to be here. I was working at a juvenile probation office in the area, and it was creating so much stress they first put guys with automatic weapons out to protect us, then pulled them to try to deescalate tension, with all of us on edge the whole time. Finally, a storm was rolling in that was going to be saturating the area with hours and hours of rain just as they said they were going to cordon off and go house to house. That did it. While no one wanted particularly to turn him in helpfully just because of a snitch code, no one wanted to go down on a cop killer beef with him as an accessory, either. He was grabbed up by "unknown parties" and dropped at an attorney's office who had been requested to arrange surrender. It won't be as big as the party the night the lights went out to dispatch that particularly prolific serial killer, but there'll be liberal amounts of hooch consumed at cop bars and DA office parties and a few fancy fundraisers for politicians statewide when that business is finally finished--and probably a few celebratory belts even in those neighborhoods, given all that was discovered by trials (plural)!!! l cannot wait for his number to come up!

I wonder if that little girl remembers that night. She’s probably old enough to understand at this point, that’s super traumatic.
Hey I am glad that I remember to put my pants on...

Meh. There is a lot of evidence that indicates hypnosis is an unreliable tool.
Imagine Mike being in that forest every day and the serial killer is watching him and never decided to kill him until he had a partner with him 💔
That's a scary thought and is a possibility
But why the multiple stab wounds?
They only tied socks around the women in this story. Maybe the killers marks are the adult women and the men are incedental.
@@gavinfairbanks They clearly have some problem with couples, and it's somehow tied to the women (given the tube socks). Disgruntled, jealousy, etc could be the motives to kill the couples.
Thats what I was thinking, cause he only kills couples, and kills women with a tube sock
This is the result when you mix "Reading Rainbow" with "Are You Afraid of the Dark" on the internet lol
hahah
@Veira Powell same
@@MrBallen hey I found the ghost face in the lower left hand corner at 6:41
Ever since I've learnt about the strange dark and mysterious in story format I can't stop watching
found your page about 2 weeks ago, trying not too bindge watch too hard so I aays have several episodes a day to watch, but your channel is so good, it is hard to resist binging them!
Mr Ballen is the best storyteller on UA-cam, undebatable
Your darn right
Yes you are so right
Mr Nightmare and Mr Ballen are the 2 elites of UA-cam story telling, they’re both different but great story tellers
Camping has been ruined for me after listening to these stories lol. What makes it worse is i live close to this area!
are you ok
buy a gun.
Look out for the tube sock killer
@Emilio Wendlandt lmao don't matter if he goes in alone he'll be dead when he is asleep
Dogs are awesome...
I just shed a tear I’m not crying tho it’s these damn onions
Perhaps the tube sock killer is a dad and that explains why he didn't kill the little girl
I have 2 boys and I feel the same! They're still young though so I try every day for them. That's a dad better than being a man just a man!
@@johntompkins9583 beware them becoming teenagers, as an inside source they will eventually realize you can't make them do things and from there on out it's pretty much over trying to change them.
This story is particularly scary for me, I grew up right outside of Elbe Washington around 2011 and would play on the Nisqually river all the time. The fact that the killer is still uncaught, and I was living in the area that the skull fragment was found is truly terrifying. I would pass the logging road where Mike's skull fragment was found on the bus everyday.
Same I live in Tacoma Washington lol
Ohmy!
Bro you need to upload these stories on Spotify. I want to listen to them while working or on long trips.
Then put UA-cam on ur phone lol
@@cd254 I want to be able to turn my phone off like with Spotify. I dont have UA-cam Premium nor do i want it.
You can download UA-cam videos to your phone as audio files for free with a free program
@@KryptsCorner yea but with Spotify once its uploaded I dont have to download anything. Just hit the play button.
The fact that hikers found more bodies than police did is insane😂
Yes
Well of course!we have to do the work they are. SUPPOSED TO DO!!!
Agreed but, that is terribly sad, not at all funny
Sometimes when your not looking for anything you usually find... Something. Assuming the opposite, searching with too much focus yields the expected_ tunnel vision maybe
Its a huge area that still took hikers years to find them.
I honestly love that he says " we " upload every week instead of "I". I love that he includes his family too even if they aren't in all his vids 🥺🥺
He has an editor too
Is it me, or am I addicted to watching this guy? Watching him is like getting on a swing as a kid, you don’t wanna stop and you wanna keep going until you physically can’t move.

I'm no talent scout but I feel like Mr. Ballen's ability to memorize stories and to convey them in a very dramatic way; could be something movie/tv program folks would appreciate.
He reads off a script and there are several cuts in the video but his story telling ability’s are still amazing
@@itzyaboigamer9340 he said he actually memorises the story the day before but he has bullet points written out w key information so he doesn’t forget beside him
It's definitely disturbing when you hear a story like this about an area where you live, and that more has happened.
So why did you stop tying socks around their necks when you kill them?
Not necessarily.
Why would the killer drop the child off in his hometown?
Seems smarter to take the kid a few towns away from where you live.
@@hollowgonzalo4329 maybe he was going to Kmart
@@TRYCLOPS1 yep! He needed another pair of socks
Your stories make me more aware of my surroundings but isn't not gonna stop me from do stupid things.
I get so engulfed in these stories, I don’t even bother looking for the secret for fear I’m gonna miss something in the story 🤦🏽♀️😂. #MrBallen is the best story teller! Sometimes I talk back like he can he hear me 😂😂
Me too!!!!
Exactly...idk y he even puts that secret there?
Same
Is there really even a secret picture in the vid. I have never seen it. I’m wondering if it a joke?
I started on true crime daily and now im addicted to this channel😭. Never disappoints
He once gave a story that had a happy ending. I was disappointed.
I love watching Mrballen, but finding stories like this makes me realize we have serial killers people don't know about. And even worse, it's not like old history, they are still roaming around.
16:09 OR Krystle was freaking out on the way to kmart, calling out for her mom, and the killer was ttelling her repeatedly that her "mom was in the trees"
Why didn't KMart review video footage from their parking lot to see if they could see who dropped the little girl off?
Kmart has been cost cutting since Princess D was alive. Shes dead and so is Kmart.
Very good point..no witness's at Kmart?
This was 1985, the types of security cameras back then were pretty subpar. I'm just guessing here, but the cameras may only have covered entries\exits and not the entire parking lot.
You think Kmart had video surveillance in the 80s?
CCTV wasnt widely used until the 90's
"If Mike was dead, then it calls in to question his ability to commit these two crimes." Ya, I would say so.
