In 1943, Irena Sendler and Janina Grabowska froze when they heard Gestapo pounding on the front door. Knowing she was minutes from arrest, Irena tossed Janina her most dangerous possession: a glass jar containing the names of over 2,000 Jewish children she’d smuggled to safety from the Warsaw Ghetto. Who was this courageous woman? Iseult Gillespie details the life and legacy of Irena Sendler.

My great-grandmother's life was saved by her. She's a true hero to whom my family is deeply thankful.

I acted as surrogate for a dear friend. When a daughter was born she let me name her. She was called Irena Valentina (Valentina after the cosmonaut).

Shakuntala, recognition is not something that helpful people crave. The act of helping and saving people's lives is much more rewarding than just mere recognition. Yet I can see how it can be frightening to us who won't know of such remarkable people
They died doing what they loved. I'm sure they were satisfied with what they had accomplished. That satisfaction of having lived a purposeful life is much more important than any praise they might receive as their legacy.

You only hear the bad, but did you know that there are many people call “abolitionists” look when there is bad people, there is also good people. Focus on both. And world history is barely being taught in the US. History is always in a grey area.

What a powerful story! It's a shame Sandler's story isn't more well known, doubly so that the Polish government tried to supress her story
The question is why. Was it due to her being socialist? Poland was a communist country under the Warsaw Pact. You’d think the Soviet government would have lauded her.

The then-new government killed most of the resistance fighters and tried to suppress people like Witold Pielecki and so many more. Communists arrested or killed or oppressed anyone who helped during WWII.

I think this is especially beautiful as this is among other things a story of empathy even between generations, Religions and nationalities.

Not gonna lie, her happy ending was wholesome. I was expecting her to have a sad ending (like Anne Frank).

I have a hard time deciding which part of Anne Frank's story I feel worse for, the fact that she was murdered in her teens, or the fact that she had her diary published worldwide...

Anne wanted to release her dairy after the war but died before she could. She wrote her dream of beeing a famous writer and wanting to publish her dairy. Her father read the dairy and published it for anne so her dream can come true.

This must be Sendler’s list that I heard so much about.
Schindler's list is a similar case of helping people escape (the film is beautiful, would recomend watching though its very upsetting)
Irena Sendler (The one from this video) and Oskar Schindler (The Schindler's List) are two different people.

I love how still after everything happened to her, and how many lives she saved, she didn't take recognition and praise for her work.such a great and generous soul.
There was a whole network of people who saved those children. There is a reason why Irena used the pronoun "we" instead of "I" in her interviews. That said, she deserves as much recognition as Schindler who initially had no qualms about using free labor.
schindlers list is a great fictional comedy movie
In 3rd grade, I found and article about her and was instantly hooked. I wrote my essay about her, and presented it in front of the class. I am so thankful that I was able to honor this true hero.

This was also the case with Sir Nicholas Winton. Wishing they could've done more is a great sign of humanity in someone that can burden them for the rest of their life. After seeing the horrors of ww2 you'd have survivor's guilt too
The real Schindler didn’t have that reaction until many years afterward, though. It was changed for the dramatic value for the film.

I am always in awe of people who were able to identify a sickened society who were able to oppose the tradition and saw it wrong ang unjust, only great minds can do that and in my opinion is thw highest form of intelligence.

It's always nice to hear a foreigner pronouncing Polish surnames correctly... anecdote; Supposedly, one of the ways to get the children out of the ghetto was to hide them on a cart, among the packages.One of Sendler's friends was driving the cart.To prevent the sentries from hearing the crying of the younger children, he would always take a barking, loud dog with him so that he would drown out everything and distract the guards.I was surprised no one said about it ...

I was a paramedic for 23 years and she saved more people than all the people I worked with in 23 years! Hero.

The nominees for Nobel prizes aren't released, so how are we to know that this is true? She definitely deserved this prize, though.
Fake news. While it is possible, nobody really knew if she was actually nominated or even became the runner-up for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
Neither the Nobel Foundation (who has pledged to keep information involved in their decision-making a secret for five decades after each award ceremony) nor the party that supposedly nominated Irena Sendler spoke of this.
The fact is, she was one of 181 nominees in 2007. Her role was rather symbolic as she was not widely known at that time. And sadly, next year she died. (Nobel prize is awarded to a living person).
Her story really needs to be made into a movie.

The idea of my parents having to leave me for my safety breaks me, I'd rather die with them. I know that the parents and children in this story felt this but a million times worse.
I really admire these kinds of people, not just for their courage, but also their ingenuity.
Managing these kinds of operations takes a lot to keep them running and undetected, and if I were in their place, I’d had gotten caught quite quickly.

I worked on an art project about Irena Sendler for the Unsung Heroes project for the Lowell Milken Foundation. She's such an inspiration, a true upstanding citizen who doesn't crack under the pressure of surrounding bigotry
She is a hero! From what I could tell all of the kids that she saved has families and even have grandkids and great grandkids! She and many people at the time and future hero’s decades later
