Hi, Mr. Stroke! It was good and easy to follow as always, don't worry! ;) I have just one question: when you mix the technical/contrast paint you use for the glow with their relative thinners, do you mix them on a dry palette? Because to my experience, using a wet palette already slightly thins the paint, so I wanted to know if I should take that in account when doing it.
I use everything on my wet palette. If you're finding your palette is actually diluting your paints rather than simply maintaining their moisture levels then I would suggest looking at using a different membrane paper. As it is letting too much moisture through. Let me guess, you're using an Army Painter wet palette? Give this paper a try and see if it make everything better? amzn.to/3ngaKi4
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides No, I usually use either the RedGrassGames ones with both reusable and on-time membranes or Masterons Sta-wet palette with parchment paper. Now that I think about it, it mostly happens with already thin paint, like shades and contrast it was just my impression? I'll take a look at those you poster though, thanks.
Look up videos on the Object Source Lightning technique, it's a more involved technique as you incorporate darker/lighter color gradients to mimic shadows/lightning but you can get crazy good results.
im greatful for the fact you actually use brushes for everything, i've seen far too many just airbrush everything, and while i get it, not everyone can either afford all the "pro" gear, or has the time to set it all up

As a professional miniature painter, I really liked this tutorial. It’s simple but effective. Thanks for this awesome tutorial ! What are the differences between the Lahmian and the contrast medium ? Thanks again for your awesome content ! Definitely one of the highest quality on this platform.
Thank you So, contrast medium and Lahmian medium have different chemical makeups. Think of them as paint without pigment. So, when thinning down paints like contrast / speed paints it’s important to use their corresponding medium so as to not imbalance them. As it can result in them “splitting” meaning they no longer hold together and apply blotchy and patchy or streaky and dry very ugly. Likewise, Lahmian medium should be used to thin down GW’s washes and technical paints because it matches their chemical structure. Hope that helps
Sorry man, hopefully it's worth the wait. I wanted to make the video as useful as possible and include multiple colours etc. Ended up being much more complicated to put together than I expected Let me know what ya think?
Thank you So, to be able to tint like this you really need a strong wash or contrast style paint because they stain the surface too. A bit like a dye, but still being able to see through it. So, I’d say try and get contrast if you can or maybe army painter speed paints? Failing that you can try washes, but they don’t tend to come in bright enough colours for this effect and you’d need to apply in multiple thin layers and build up the colour without making it too dark Hope that helps
Great tutorial and explanations. One detail, though, is that the glow is very soft. As in it projects colours onto edges around it, but not really any light. Which I think is reasonably well illustrated by looking at the values of painted areas in grayscale (*): the eyes/chest symbol/... indeed have much higher values, but the areas around them do not, or at least not any more than they would with "regular" zenithal highlights. (*) which is a trick I believe I saw in one of Trovarion's videos? I can't remember for sure. What step(s) would you add to further brighten the glow?
Thanks for watching Yes, you’re absolutely right. This guide is only intended for glows where the light source is not stronger than the ambient/ global light source. Occasions where you want to paint a light source which is stronger than the surrounding ambient light requires a very different process. It’s not a case of adding additional steps, more completely changing the way the mini is painted. Identifying the affected areas needs to happen before the mini is painted at all and the painting, layering, shading and highlighting of all the colours affected need to be painted with the light source in mind right from the start. I’d really need to make a whole different video for that I’m afraid.
I have been waiting for this video :D great Job as always! Looks so easy when you do it but I have been struggling with Plasma glow. Going to try this out some time
Nice I needed a tutorial for a glow effect that i can use as a beginner, question, can you also use a acrylic base paint color thinned far enough with water? I don't have any contrast paints.
Great question No, you can’t thin standard acrylic paints down as they’ll not have the staining property needed for this effect. You can use washes and / or inks as well as contrast and speed paints though

Thank you, really pleased to hear you're enjoying the channel. I got my paint rack years ago, but you can get similar from Amazon amzn.to/48aQH6F amzn.to/48TPf9H Hope that helps
Now, it’s not as bonkers as it sounds. It doesn’t produce a “glow” as such as your mind doesn’t interpret black as a possible light source but it does make for a cool effect nonetheless So, no. You’re not the only one 🤣
@@thunder_bolt9869 nice one It’s not just for Necrons though This works for anything glowing Fantasy mummies with glowing eyes or wizards with magic glowing runes You name it Even control panels on military vehicles
There's one part I'm a little confused by - if you go in with white, then paint over with the glaze, then go white and go over it with the glaze again, how does it end up a different intensity the second time? Is it a different ratio of paint to medium on the second pass?
Fair question So, the way it works is the second area of white you paint is smaller and within the area you painted first time. That way, when you apply your second glaze you paint not only the new white area but also the previously glazed area too. This means the bigger area will end up with two layers of the glaze and the second (smaller) white area with just one layer of glaze. The result then being a step / change in the intensity of the effect. Hopefully that makes a bit more sense now? 👍
5:00 Today I tried to paint my first mini.... Do you guys use something for magnification ? I did notice that I had problems to see some details (in that particular 4cm/1,6in small figure)
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides I'm going to practice on some Necrons I have lying around, but the main minis are going to be my Varanguard. There are some cracks and other cool details in the armor that I'd like to have glow orange
Hey, can someone tell me why to use contrast medium with the contrast paint instead of just using the contrast paint straight from the pot? (new to painting)
that's a great question. So, the quick answer is to change how strong the colour will be. If you think of a contrast paint being like a dye and it staining what you paint it on to. Some times that strength of staining is too much and it overpowers everything underneath. By adding contrast medium you can reduce the strength of the staining and make it more soft and allow more of the colours underneath to show through. Give this video a watch, it'll help explain things in more detail ua-cam.com/video/mADYQQOH9a8/v-deo.html if you have more questions, just let me know
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Sorry if the question is too specific, but I'm planning to use Vallejo Dark Aluminum on my Necrons. What would be a good color for edge highlighting them?. Can I simply add white to the metal color, or would that be a bad idea?
@@themate1065 so, to highlight a metallic gunmetal colour you’ll be wanting a bright silver. As metals have sharp bright highlights No, adding white to it won’t achieve a lighter metallic. If you want to lighten a dark silver you need to mix it with a bright silver. That way you maintain the metallic nature of the paint but lighten the overall tone. Hope that helps
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides I'm sorry if I'm asking too many questions, but I can't find an answer anywhere. I want to edge highlight important models and dry brush less important models in the same army, specifically Silver Necrons. Do you think Vallejo Metal Color Chrome is good for dry brushing? Or perhaps Vallejo Model Air Silver, or another brand? (I use Vallejo Dark Aluminum for the base.)
Don’t apologise for asking questions. Never stop asking questions mate. It looks like you’ve asked this question on another video already. Which I’ve just answered now for you. If you need more detail, let me know
Does anyone know how to make a purple glow? Not like all the plasma tutorials but just like with Tesseract Glow. I would love my Doomsday cannon to be emanating purplish glow but so far nothing worked.
Great question So, the reason I diluted the coloured stains was because if I hadn’t they would have been too opaque and would have covered the white underneath too much. For a lighting effect you need the source to be brighter and lighter than the areas around it as the light’s influence fades. By diluting the colours it makes them more transparent and allows you to tint the model without obscuring the tones beneath. You can actually buy fluorescent colours which you may want to use instead but you will still need to make sure they are transparent enough for the technique to work Hope that helps
tbh if you want this guide to be more user friendly use paints from one vendor. Or give alternatives from other paint vendors. Both titanium white and white scar would probably work for white part. No reason to get another white paint just to paint glow
It’s nigh on impossible to list all possible alternatives but I do take your point. I simply show the paints I’m confident will give the best results. Regarding whites, yes ProAcryl titanium white would work fine. GW’s White Scar on the other hand, I disagree, I wouldn’t touch it ever

Do yourself a favour and get some Two Thin Coats white. It’s a game changer for white paint.
Thanks for watching, I’m glad you found it useful though 👍
Sounds good! I love my Pro Acryl but want to try the TTC white too. I'm saving this video in my Tutorials playlist for when I do something glowy next. By far the most straight forward and simple guide I've found. Cheers!@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@@theorganicshadow ProAcryl is great for sure
TTC I think just edges it as I feel it thins down nicer. Probably a personal thing but if you do get the chance to try the TTCs white I would love to hear your thoughts on it
I've tried alot of whites. I'm gonna get hate for this but ..... I use apple barrel white. Wal-Mart craft paint.. i add 2 drops of alcohol and a few drops of water. You couldn't ask for smoother paint. And ... it's only 50 cent a bottle.
@@nomore2226 no hate here 🙂
If you’ve found a paint which gives the results you want, then that’s a win.
If it’s also cheap, well that’s even better.
Nice one! 👍
Thank you for your videos, they have helped me loads, I am new to the hobby. I absolutely love the scale75 flat black. Where did you get your paint racks? my paints are all over the place.
Thank you, really pleased to hear you're enjoying the channel.
I got my paint rack years ago, but you can get similar from Amazon

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides That's great, thank you!
Am I the only one who would try this with black?
Now, it’s not as bonkers as it sounds.
It doesn’t produce a “glow” as such as your mind doesn’t interpret black as a possible light source but it does make for a cool effect nonetheless
So, no. You’re not the only one 🤣

can i apply this to other minis like a big gun from a titan? or a dreadnaught?

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides my brother loves painting necrons so i am going to show him and i hope he uses these techniques

It’s not just for Necrons though
This works for anything glowing
Fantasy mummies with glowing eyes or wizards with magic glowing runes
You name it
Even control panels on military vehicles
Super cool
Thanks 👍

Great to hear you liked it.
Thanks for checking out my channel 👍
Thank you 🙏🏻
You’re very welcome

There's one part I'm a little confused by - if you go in with white, then paint over with the glaze, then go white and go over it with the glaze again, how does it end up a different intensity the second time? Is it a different ratio of paint to medium on the second pass?
Fair question
So, the way it works is the second area of white you paint is smaller and within the area you painted first time.
Had the same question. Thanks for this answer.
Desperately need a tutorial on your city’s of sigma lethis fusiliers
5:00 Today I tried to paint my first mini.... Do you guys use something for magnification ? I did notice that I had problems to see some details (in that particular 4cm/1,6in small figure)
What ratio do i want to do for tesseract glow and lahmian medium? 1:1?
yes, that's right
Finally i can paint federal agents with the best of them!
Nice one. Glad you found this guide helpful 👍
Any paint recommendations for an orange glow?
As bright a contrast as possible really.
I think I’d try MAGMADROTH FLAME
and do the thinned down process like I did in the video 👍
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides awesome, I will give it a go!

What are you adding the glow on?
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides I'm going to practice on some Necrons I have lying around, but the main minis are going to be my Varanguard. There are some cracks and other cool details in the armor that I'd like to have glow orange

Haha fantastic, I’ll expect a cheque in the post 👍

Are this neon paint colors
No, these aren’t neon colours. Although the green is pretty close.
You’re right though, neon colours work extremely well for this process too 👍
Hey, can someone tell me why to use contrast medium with the contrast paint instead of just using the contrast paint straight from the pot? (new to painting)
that's a great question. So, the quick answer is to change how strong the colour will be. If you think of a contrast paint being like a dye and it staining what you paint it on to. Some times that strength of staining is too much and it overpowers everything underneath. By adding contrast medium you can reduce the strength of the staining and make it more soft and allow more of the colours underneath to show through.
Give this video a watch, it'll help explain things in more detail

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Sorry if the question is too specific, but I'm planning to use Vallejo Dark Aluminum on my Necrons. What would be a good color for edge highlighting them?.
Can I simply add white to the metal color, or would that be a bad idea?
@@themate1065 so, to highlight a metallic gunmetal colour you’ll be wanting a bright silver. As metals have sharp bright highlights
No, adding white to it won’t achieve a lighter metallic.

I think each one works….. mostly…. Except for the red!?! It doesn’t really look as much as “glowing red” as it looks like “pink inside of a red area”!
Alas I can paint something cool without throwing £200 away for an airbrush
Please WHY YOU use diluent in THIS video please?i WANT create EFFECTS FLUORESCENT very strong,I must use YOUR tecnic or not??please.thank you
Great question
So, the reason I diluted the coloured stains was because if I hadn’t they would have been too opaque and would have covered the white underneath too much.
For a lighting effect you need the source to be brighter and lighter than the areas around it as the light’s influence fades.
By diluting the colours it makes them more transparent and allows you to tint the model without obscuring the tones beneath.
You can actually buy fluorescent colours which you may want to use instead but you will still need to make sure they are transparent enough for the technique to work
Hope that helps
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thank you!👍
tbh if you want this guide to be more user friendly use paints from one vendor.
Do uou mix lithium meduim.witjntjr green paint
No, the green was thin enough to create the effect I was after
