GLAZING explained in 5 minutes

- Glazing is considered to be one of the main blending methods for miniature painting. If you want to get perfect blends on your miniatures, glazing is definitely something that you will come across!
If you are wondering how to glaze or how to thin down your paint to achive ultimate glazing epxerience (which is really case by case anyway), this is the right video for you.
Glazing is especially useful when painting gradients and smooth transition to get perfect blends. You will definitely need glazing to paint non metallic metal, paint smooth fabric, skintones and much more. In the end you will find glazing is somewhat ultimate miniature painting technique. This is also the case if you want to build some volume anywhere and this can be quite impressive on space marine armor instead of painting traditional eavy metal style like on games workshop box arts.
The miniature is called Warrior of the Sun from Kingdom Death.

I am painting miniatures for warhammer, age of sigmar, marvel crisis protocol, D&D and much more! Whether it is superhero miniatures, heroic characters or space marines, I will paint them! If you are looking for some sweet miniature painting tutorials or warhammer hobby content in general, this is the right channel for you!
This video took me over 60 hours to create when I count in editing, filming and paintng the miniatures. Also, youtube has taken down my previous thumbnail, so that definitely does not make my life easier, but if you wanna support what I am doing here, please consider subscribing and giving this video thumbs up. Thanks! 👊

Your " Under 5 Minute" video series are some of the best things in the miniature painting scene. Seriously, thanks for your work.
Oh stop it you, I am starting to blush! ☺ I hope my content will reach more poeple (so far it gets quite nice following) and more people will get to enjoy it
I completely agree with this comment.
Absolutely.
Couldnt agree more, it’s so nice to know if I want to rewatch one your technique videos, I don’t need to get through a 20 minute video with half the information you provide well in 5 minutes.
Big agree.
"What is not flat however is this mini's chest" I lost it XD
Bro legit didn't have a better example of a mini with good blending in his collection 💀
Glazing her chest multiple times in less than 5 minutes...😅
😅😅😅
Using a base to test is such a logical and simple idea, but I never thought about it.
These 5 minute videos (that I'm sure take you dozens and dozens of hours of editing!) are everything I ever wanted in a tutorial video. No fluff. All substance. Thank you so much for all of your hard work, Z. 🙏
I am glad that the work is appreciated👌cheers
This channel is pure NMM gold, man
Spent the last 6 months trying to get my head round glazing and blending. This made it a whole lot easier to understand. Great video!
These short form videos are excellent! Clear, packed with info, and great demonstrations of technique as well. So easy to watch! This channel is gonna be big! Keep up the great work!
Thank you for your kind words :)
I wish I could give this video two big, glorious likes.
WHHHOOOOOOA, wut de HAAAAAEEEEEEL?? Oooooooh mah gawd, ain't no waaayeeaaay
I love your style of video, I've been watching even for techniques im confident in just cause its so informative and so fast. You're like a reverse vince ventrulla(his content is amazing too just very exhaustive and comprehensive), hyper fast straight to the point; makes me wanna get straight to painting after watching every time.
Thank you, it really means a lot to me. I love videos ftom Vince, but there is a lot of long form cintent already, so I decided to fill the gap of short informative videos. I still think that my videos are great starting point and you can go for a deep dive to Vince or Trovarion or whoever you want. Cheers!
When you don't know how to use some painting method (like me) and trying to find something on UA-cam it looks like "in this short 18 hour video by using exclusive sable fur brushes, 356 colors and solvent from sea urchin teats we will learn how to make smooth transitions and reflections of gold in silver". But here everything is on the case, short and clear. Big thanks!
i honestly just can't thank you enough for your videos. the way you break down these techniques and go into detail makes it so easy to understand.
I am glad to hear that 🎉
Fantastic explination of glazing, I swear I am one of those that has subscribed!
Cheers mate :)
I am so glad you showed up on my recommended videos. These techniques explained in under 5 mins are just what I have been looking for, straight to the point. Subscribed.
It is so nice that you say that, thank you
Just subscribed, I love the straight to the point practical demonstration of techniques without muddling my poor noob mind with 40 other techniques and twenty minutes of stories about your cats thrown in. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for doing this btw. Glazes have always been an intimidating thing for me to take on (skin and faces in general, really). It's nice to see it broken down so simply and neatly.
Your videos keep popping up in my feed, and I've watched many of them, but today I subscribed. This video, as well as your OSL one, helped me finally get the hang of some paint techniques I had been having trouble with. I have ADHD, and I'm already a fairly decent self taught artist, so most other tutorials, where they talk about every little detail, made me zone out and miss out on the important stuff I needed to up my craft. These videos told me only what I needed, and waited until after the information was told to start really going in depth on HOW to use the techniques, or variations of them. Also, your graphics and paintjobs were clear and concise examples of the concepts you talked about. Thank you so much for explaining this in a way I could understand.
Love this series, so sharp and concise. Most other channels have only just stopped self promoting their merch, patreon or shilling for a sponsor by the 5 minute mark and haven't actually explained anything.
Thanks for the video, you got my sub!!!
These are becoming my go to for learning new techniques. Keep them coming!
The best explanation and demonstration of glazing yet. Thanks mate I’ve really been struggling with this. Nailed it!
Glad it helped
Wooo first, glad I am able to see a awesome technique on glazing. Been having a lot of inconsistency with my glazing.
Hands down my favourite painting teacher
Thank you!!
Saved this video always been intimidated of glazing resort to my airbrush all the time. Thanks man.
I was never certain about wicking off excess paint on a paper towel, glad to see I was actually doing the right thing. Makes glazing seem so much easier.
Glad that it helped :)
Love your humor and all the needed infos in under 5 minutes! Just perfect. Thank you very much
I like this format of short, focused, very informative videos. You have my sub sir.
Your videos are very helpful! Cheers from London, Ontario, Canada!
just started watching you channel as it got linked to a question I asked in a group on facebook on drybrushing. I really like how you took this topic and broke it down. a little fast but I never thought of using a base to try things out. I think that's a great idea. this seems better with the glazing technique and I'm more willing to try this out after seeing this video.
Hey,
It's just after 6:00 am here in U.S. I'm lyin' here with COVID, for the second time, sick as a dog, so I'm binge watching your videos, in order.
After having been a miniature for only 5 months, I've learned SO much from watching you paint.
Can I make a few video requests..? I think they'll be relatively painless.
1) Make a video showing us a timeline of your work, starting with some of your earliest pieces, getting older as your work has grown, up to some of your latest pieces. And explain how you learned to get your level of mastery as you grew as a painter.
2) Do a video on beard care. I know guys who couldn't grow a full beard if you put a gun to their heads. Like you, I'm one of the blessed ones who can grow a full thick beard but I can't control mine anywhere near like yours. How did you keep that thing so tamed..?
Thanks for the great vids..!!
This is the most effective and concise video on glazing. Thank you 🙏
I love how your video's are short and stay on point makes it easy to go back and watch again if you are struggling with something. Not to say you shouldn't make longer videos about things, but when teaching a technique Short and to the point works great for me. A++ from me.
Thank you, I will keep on doing this format for sure, but longer videos are coming too :)
Thanks! This REALLY helped me to understand not only the glaze topic but also how washes, layers and basecoats work. Many thanks!
Thank you for this short and clear tutorial ! Really pedagogical and the most important, understandable.
Great display and explanation of glazing I'm a nubee so watching your work is really appreciated. Thanks
Best explanation of glazing ever.
clear, concise and packed full of info: I love it!
There are not many tutorials about painting clay sculptures but these are really helpful.
I don't know how could I resist to subscribe after watching this awesome video!?
That was one smooth transition between talking about painting bases to that figure
I'm honestly devastated that it took me this long to stumble into your channel. This is seriously some of the best, most informative, and actually *useful* content for painters of just about any level on UA-cam. I'm personally offended that you only have 18.2k subs. I'll see if I can't recommend a few folks your way.
Man, you are way too kind, I am really so happy about the positive response these videos are getting! I am sure people will naturally discover my videos and they will come to enjoy them when the time is right :) Thank you
Just stumbled on your 5 minute guides. They're awesome and you have a magnificent beard.
just found ur videos. sometimes i just need a recap on some techniques or to find other ways of doing something. ur videos are great for this, straight to the point simple and easy to understand. great stuff.
Thank you! I am so glad to hear that :)
Best glazing tutorial I´ve seen so far! I always mess this up with the amount of water. Thank you for your advise!
Cheers!
I stumbled upon your channel recently by accident but i am sure happy I did. Your videos are to the point and also are structured and cut very well. I will gladly stay around for more painting tips. Keep up the good work! Cheers
These comments keep me going, thank you
Skvělé video, děkuji moc za překlad.. i když sice rozumím anglicky, takhle je to pohodlnější:) no a kvalita těchto videí je perfektní, krásně vysvetleno i pro začátečníky 👍
To jsem jedině rád :)
You are my favorite painter. Love the videos you do.
I'm finding your videos a lot better and easier to grasp some basic concepts that have been eluding me for a while> I wish I would have found your channel much sooner!
thanks alot, your "under 5 minutes" serie really unlocked my skills, keep it up !
Man, I appreciate comments like these, keep on painting!
@@Zumikito I will ! working on Super Fantasy Brawl minis those days
Great video! This is a technique I've been struggling to get right, and your explanation & examples were extremely helpful... as well as entertaining! If you're going to spend time doing 1,055 glazes, you sure picked the right mini! haha
That is true! Not really something for tabletop standard minis haha. Either way, having right layer underneath helps a lot
Love the 5 min series its nice to have all the abridged information on one topic in one video. I think I learned more in 5 mins than I have in hours of other vides nice one :)
This video is fire, easiest sub hit in my life.
I am glad to hear that 🙌
bro your commentary is outstanding, loving this channel, kudos!
Best, most useful explanation of glazing I've seen yet. And super time-efficient! Definitely subscribing.
Thank you for the feedback :)
@@Zumikito I'm also impressed with the quick reply! I hope your subscriptions grow quickly...they certainly should!
@@jeffreygeorge8884 you are too kind, I belive more people will come to enjoy my videos as the time goes :)
Super video. Tak jako vždy 👍. Zítra vyzkouším 😀. Díky.
I'm fairly new to this channel (your NMM video made me subscribe), and I am loving what I see. Can't wait to see this channel grow!
Yea baby, its gonna happen! Thank you for your support
Thank you. That was easy to understand. You earned your sub, good sir. Also it is really unfair and quite a shame that you do not have more subs. You deserve them!
Thank you! It is funny you say that, I received so many subs lately that my head is spinning lol, surely more people will come to enjoy my vids as the time goes :)
The timing of this video is perfect, I’ve decided to try glazing on my morty model and found this gem of a video, liked and subscribed!
One like for the amazing tutorial. I would give you another one for being the first english-speaking person I heard saying "Vallejo" correctly
Oh, nice! Glad that my highschool spanish lessons paid off haha
Hey man this video is great. I am teaching my brother how to paint and while I think there is nothing better than having a teach by your side, I think videos like this really help get concepts across. Glad to have subbed :) So I thought I should comment and like for the UA-cam gods :P btw I was a bit out of it so those Trumpets thing I was like ahhh ha ha, but its good makes people pay attention. Keep up the good work :)
Oh man, such a lovely comment, thank you. Hopefully that air raid siren did not scare you that much
@@Zumikito life stuff was making me space out ha ha :/ but yeah its fine on the second watch when I wasn't out of it
Glazing becomes less a secret hidden painting technique😉Thx for the effort to create this video!!!Big smile at the chart explanation.Try to find some time for testing.
Glad that you like it!
This is awesome! Thanks for the tutorial!
wow this glazing is awsome, i will use it for my next mini. Thank you very much for the tips!
You are more than welcome
We appreciate your hard work especially making the videos I know a little bit about that pain myself.
Ok first and foremost amazing beard. Second this was my first video I saw of yours it was in my recommended and after seeing it you in 5 minutes and 53 seconds helped me really feel like I understood glazing more and without a second thought got me to sub. This is a amazing video 🤘🤘🤘
Thank you, it is always great to hear that this helps people!
Great video, I really appreciate that you kept it concise yet still informative, it makes it much easier to digest. Earned a sub from me.
Thank you, that is the exact purpose of this format, so hearing this makes me quite happy!
Great video! I was struggling with transitions, will try this method
Incredibly useful video for me, such concise explanations. Glazing and OSL are my nemesis and I hope to conquer them soon. Looking forward to more videos from you!
Glad it was helpful!
Another good one mate. I'm having a crack at wet blending and glazing on some bases tomorrow.
Nice :)
Great Video again!
The diagram is pretty cool and a must have for every srarter.
Keep on going!
Thank you!
Just found your channel & good explanation. I keep wondering during the entire video, where are her "tips"? 🤔😆👀
I see you chose wisely on which area to paint.
Glazing and showing a busty miniature.... I think we all know how one does this...
Its a trap!
Tip: if you have a 3D printer, you can print primitives like spheres and cylinders as test subjects for practicing blending on forms/volumes and light/shadow, as a much better surface than a flat base.
Thank you. I learned something valuable from you. Great content.
This video series is so well made. Thank you!
Cheers!
Awesomely done! Love your videos👍🏼😁
Very informative video. Thank you!! Glazes can definitely be tricky to learn.
Glad it was helpful!
Mate this is such a great video! I need to glaze more on my minis but I lack patience
well YT recommended this to me today... in July.. lol but i'm a sub ... i still prefer to use a combo of water/medium to speed the painting via glaze... and I do understand the want to minimize the buildup by only mixing with water...but I've found i have way more control with a mix of 4/1 or 3/1 (water/medium) included with my initial mix on the pallet for my glazing ...having that little bit of medium i find really helps keep the little bit of pigment in place better...
These videos are great!
can you please do a tutorial on your skintone? rn im using the fairy flesh set, but i feel like going from purple to skin really elevates the mini
Great video, is very useful 👌
Omg you have given me so much of a better way of painting. Thank you! Im doing minis for the first time and want to love them. Also I commend the strength of that miniature's bra XD
Super useful, thank you!
Nice video, thanks! I'll try it out.
I far prefer glazing to using a wash. I used to use washes when I first started out, but now I never use them. I work with my darkest colors first, feather parts that don't need to be as smooth and then glaze the smooth parts.
The people at the game store I frequent thought I was using an air brush.
Only thing now is I need to find a good sealant that doesn't mute out my colors or look shiny when I'm done.
These 5 minute videos are so good that I kinda wish they were longer haha An in depth video of how u glaze would be amazing. Maybe take one area where you use your shiny black primer method with the light source and glaze that area from start to finish. The red leg armor for example in your volume video you just did recently would be cool. That way we kind of get a better understanding of what colors to mix (base tones, mid tones, etc) and where to place them. Keep it up though man. I’m a new subscriber and happy I found your content!
There will be a longer video at some point , so I will show as much as possible there, but the volume video covers it pretty well imho :) thank you
You've got a new follower, my friend. You certainly went straight to the point, unlike other UA-camrs who beat around the bush for ages in order to stretch the time of their videos. Bravo! (By the way, your accent sounds extremely familiar. Where are you from?)
Thank you, I am trying to fill this gap that exists, since I find myself skipping many parts in vidoes of some youtubers (although the advice is still great). I am from Czech Republic, but I watch so much of pewdiepie that I think that I lost my Czech accent and went for swedish instead 😅
@@Zumikito Well, carry on making these videos because they are definitely worthy gems full of knowledge to bear in mind. Best of Lucks, mate!
Okay so glazing is sort of a middle ground between a wash and a wet blend. But seems to be a bit more controlled than both. Also amazing, never thought to learn to paint and use bases I wont use as practice! I will def do this when I start!
I would say it is more of a thinned down layer (you have to rub the brush off the paper towel though). With wash, you have no control, with glaze, you do, but it will take you more time, since it¨s really transparent.
Holy moly, those chebs!
Great video as usual man cheers! ✌
Love your 5 minutes series, learn a ton of things from here. Do you plan to make a video about layering?
Layering is the same as glazing, but with thicker layers 😁
I love the series and they are super helpful. I have recently found that thinning down some ink for glazing works even better than the paint. Have you ever tried using ink to glaze?
Sure, it works great, it is still paint after all!
Fantastic video Zumikito! Maybe a question could be explored: How to avoid the effect of the "Coffee" stains that the glazes leave? Is one of my biggest issues!
That happens when you let too much pigment pool in one place. Even worse thing that can happen, you pull it off when it is drying and create texture
Man you are a great teacher! Im a noob re-approaching painting. Do you have a video where you suggest how to start painting and what are the tools necessary? What can you recommend? What techniques should I approach first? Cheers!
I have both videos actually! One for the best 8 tools and one for full guide to starting (charizard thumbnail)
@@Zumikito thank you so much my friend! Will go there!
Subd! Great great great! Tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to explain this.
This is awesome
Very interesting my friend! I was looking for a tutorial like this. Good job.
Thanm you :)
Great video
