Lea Salonga is from the Philippines. She is the singing voice for 2 Disney princesses - Jasmine ("A Whole New World") and Mulan ("Reflection").
Lea was born Feb 22, 1971 (she was 24 in this video). Lea started performing at age 7 in the stage musical THE KING AND I and her first lead role was as ANNIE at age 9. (I think you can find some very poor quality clips of Lea as Annie - it's from the early 80s!) As a child and in her teens she did theater, tv, film, albums, and concerts. At age 17 (while in her first year of college as a biology student/pre-med) she auditioned for MISS SAIGON - the new musical by the same people who wrote LES MISERABLES. Lea starred in MISS SAIGON in London at age 18, won the Olivier Award at 19, opened the show on Broadway at age 20 and won every major theater award including the Tony Award. Lea went into the Broadway production of LES MISERABLES in 1993 playing Eponine (the character in this video). She was the first Asian/non-Caucasian woman to play Eponine on Broadway. This performance is from the 10th Anniversary Dream Cast concert of LES MISERABLES in 1995 and Lea was asked to play Eponine in the concert. Many people consider this to be the definitive performance of "On My Own".

It's from the Manila production in 2000, not the original production in 1989 when she was 18. You'll see amazing acting and singing and understand why she won all the awards.
P.S. Her name is pronounced LAY-ah (like Princess Leia from Star Wars).

The context of this was it was not normal to get an asian singer. Everyone was waiting for her to make mistakes. But she showed them. That she's just as good if not better.
