What I love about Lea is her tone. She's the only one who sang this song who's not shrill. Her voice sits perfectly in the key. The others sound like the key is a bit too high or a bit too low for them.
This is my favourite Les Mis song, and this is my favourite performance of the song. This is the performance I have always measured other performances by, and needless to say I have never found one that I prefer. If i had just one criticism of Lea Salonga's performance, it is that I could never understand how Marius could be so stupid as to not fall in love with Eponine. I mean seriously, I cannot see the pain in those eyes at the end without shedding a tear and wanting to give her a big hug.
Because it was not written as a love story but a romantic tragedy that reflected the times they were living in early 19th-century France. Written by Victor Hugo
In the book Eponine is in much, much worse shape, hoarse-voiced and half-starved and filthy, and Marius feels great pity for her but thinks of her almost as a child rather than a woman his own age.
@DavidRH714 it's not all about power of the song, keep in mind that this more like operatic and theatre, not a rock or something which you could be as energetic, or be a very high pitcher.
This is the gold standard of that song. And when you've heard Lea performing it you won't ever be able to not think of it whenever you hear somebody sing it. Lea is THE Eponine!
Lea has been performing in her home country of the Philippines since she was 7 years old. (She was born in 1971.) Lea did theater, albums, concerts, film and TV as a child and teenager before she was discovered for MISS SAIGON at age 17. Lea originated the lead role in MISS SAIGON at age 18 in the West End, age 20 on Broadway, and won every major theater award in both countries for her portrayals. You already mentioned that Lea is the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan. Lea was the first Asian/non-Caucasian to play Eponine on Broadway (in 1993) and then was part of this 10th anniversary concert in 1995. Lea went into the LES MISERABLES Broadway revival in 2007 as Fantine and then played Fantine at the 25th anniversary concert in 2010. Lea is one of only 2 actors to play roles in both the 10th and 25th anniversary LES MIZ concerts (the other was Jenny Galloway), but the only one to play two different roles. I love that people with no vocal training can just watch this performance and love it, but people with vocal training have an even greater appreciation of Lea's talent. Thank you for appreciating Lea's acting in addition to her amazing singing. I really hope you'll check out more of Lea's performances. So many wonderful ones! Just a couple off the top of my head: Lea Salonga rehearsing "I'm Still Hurting", Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "The Movie In My Mind" at MISS SAIGON 25th anniversary concert, Lea and Regine Velasquez sing a musical medley, Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain" from LES MIZ 10th anniversary concert. P.S. Her name is pronounced LAY-ah.
The last phrase was heartachingly long (15:02) and she still had breath left for the N. A few times I thought a breath was coming and she continued the phrase instead..loved how she interpreted the song.
Lea is an amazing singer but Lolli, you are an equally amazing analyst! Your ability to breakdown the mechanics of her vocal production is truly jaw dropping. I am in awe of your talent. Love your butterflies too. Thank you for being the best analyst on YT. I don't understand why you don't have 2M subs already.
Apart from Lolli's analysis which is great it's so personable & darn fun with the voice comedy effects. Then I saw laid back Lilli clip. God so loveable & some of us going through tough times appreciate that comedy Lolli while getting to switch off our own concerns to the singers & music. Lea is just calm and in control. Wehay on "Piggy Lion" look but really communicates the positioning. You can tell Lolli has theatre understanding. Thank you Lolli. I can imagine you being a wonderful hypnotherapist with comedy to crack open clients in emotional pain to laugh & then transform because in laughter you cannot hold trauma for that moment. Sorry for my fan boying 😂. What a way Lea finished the song so gently
If someone ever produced an illustrated dictionary of music, this performance would be inserted as the illustration in the margin next to the definition of "musical theater." It is simply everything that musical theater could possibly be. It is, as the Fairy Voice Mother describes it, continuous perfection. And, Lolli gives this a fresh polish with her brilliant analysis. I am not a student of voice, but I was greatly enlightened without being inundated with minutia of vocal mechanics. Lea Salonga stands alone, but Lolli's review gives full justice to this utterly perfect performance. Well done!
Still the standard for Eponine to me. I grew up on Lea as Jasmine and Mulan. Loving her voice lead me to this concert, this concert made me fall in love with Le Mis, which then made me fall in love with musical theatre. So the point is: Lea Salonga is a goddess and we appreciate her.
I've gotta say, young lady....DAMN!! I can FEEL your passion through the screen!!! You have a gift. Your explanations are succinct and--most importantly --easy to understand, complete with a demonstration. I bet you're GREAT in a teaching capacity..😊😊😊
I will have to say that you are the premier vocal coach/teacher on this site. You are so wonderful at explaining why AND how certain sounds are not only executed but the physical aspects as well. Then you show how to actually do these with your own wonderful voice. I have learned so much watching your reaction videos for over a year. Best reaction channel on UA-cam.
You're absolutely right about getting the "permission to relax" once you've heard someone singing on pitch for a bit. I also experience this when listening to instrumental music. I've often had the unpleasant experience of not receiving said permission and being on edge for an entire performance.
As someone who can't sing at all but can play piano it is so intriguing and enlightening hearing singers/coaches talk about great vocal performances. I feel like it makes me understand piano more.
Thank you for selecting this performance. Lea is the gold standard for all that play Éponine. She is the queen of musical theatre diction and I appreciate the restraint she uses in the final big notes. (Too many others belt the crap out of them.) Honestly, you could review the entire 10th anniversary show as a special live stream event. It's just that good. But I would suggest Colm Wilkinson - my favorite Valjean - singing "Bring Him Home" during the same concert.
True as the 10th was the first show so they had chosen the best performers of Les Mis all over the world and Lea got it. I watched the Broadway where actors Jean Valjean and Javert and the couple M/Mme Thenardier who adopted Cossette were also selected for the 10th Anniv.
This is (imo) the ultimate Les Mis performance and cast. The whole 10th Anniversary concert is absolute magic. Not only do you have Lea (all sorts of magic), Judy Kuhn (singing voice of Pocahontas), Michael Ball (legend) and Colm Wilkinson (gold standard of Valjean imo) If you want another marvelous performance check "Empty chairs at empty tables" (anthem of survivors guilt) or "Bring him home" (just
True expression in the eyes. Reminds me of Aurora singing in the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize concert. In the camera close-ups, her eyes told the story: she was in another world. A fairy indeed.
She's the greatest singer of any genre out there,I fell in love with her when she was starring in Miss Saigon, and her voice kills me every time I hear her!💘💘💘
Dear Lolli, if *you* were to sing that song on stage, I would absolutely attend and watch Les Miserables again! Many thanks for sharing all your beautiful insights and thoughts!
Ladies and gentlemen, the perfect female voice. If I could marry a voice, it would be Lea's. Then I would just sit around with my head in my hands staring while she sang around the house. I'd never get anything done.
Also, bless you for not stopping after the climax note “known” - it kills me when reactors stop there. The breath and the three “I love him”s are so gorgeous! And then the last line with no breath. Beautiful.
You should 100% react to Lea's performance of I Dreamed a Dream. Taking into account the fact that she was Fatine in the 25 year anniversary, so there was 15 years between the two performances and she still sounds amazing.
Excellent and wonderful critique, pinpointing exactly why Lea Salonga is one of the greats of musical theater. She has done a few duets with fellow Philippino Arnel Pineda, who is now the lead singer for Journey. If you haven't heard him, he's a vocal mimic of Steve Perry, but can do several other vocal mimicries. I think that would be interesting to see, given how in this video you noted that a person's mouth, larynx, etc. dictate a signature sound. And on the musical theater train, Ramin Karmiloo's voice is truly unmatched and I may just spend the rest of the evening going down the youtube rabbit hole on him.
What a wonderful day. The truly magnificent Lea Salonga brought to us by our FVM Lolli. Thank you gorgeous human for adding some joy to an otherwise ordinary day.
I first saw this concert about 25 years ago on TV. It was just playing in the background & between Philip Quast singing 'Stars'...& LEA SINGING THIS SONG....I was hooked. Bought myself a couple of orchestra seat tix & a DVD of the 10th Anniversary performance & have fallen in love with Les Mix & even got to see her when she appeared about 18 years ago at a casino in northern Calif. I flipped out when I was offered the opportunity for two free tix to see her at an upcoming show in my hometown at the end of April....but was sadly disappointed when she's already sold out within a day or two.
A wonderful song, powerful and moving, and Lea Salonga is simply fantastic. What is truly impressive, though, is that you are able not only to explain the technical aspects of her performance, but to recreate them with your own voice. And you do this while still being emotionally swept away by what she's doing. You are truly a joy to watch.
Mia Salonga is incredible.! FVM, your videos are also incredible! You are a gift to this world. Thank You!! Lea’s performance reaches into my soul and touches me in such a profound way! FVM your analysis which includes the breadth of the talent, training, and technique only help me appreciate this performance even more!
I watched so many of that video's vocal teacher reactions and yours is the only that actually gave so much lessons and tips. Pretty much the most informative one imo. Keep up this good reactions/analysis!
Omg, I just found you and I love you. What I would give to have you as my voice coach! Best analysis and advice I've seen so far. You're amazing and Lea is a goddess
most technical reaction ever, many tnx for educating. most Filipino singers are musically talented even if not formally trained; she might sound unique but her vocal artistry is not rare here in our country.
Love your channel, Lolli. Lea Salonga is a truly magical performer and your analysis of her vocal technique was fascinating. I watch a lot of vocal coaches on UA-cam and your reaction videos display a far deeper technical knowledge than pretty much any of the others. It is always an education to watch you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
LEA SALONGA IS A GREAT PERFORMER OF THIS SONG "ON MY OWN", WOW. . OUT OF ALL THE GIRLS AND LADIES THAT I HAVE HEARD SING THIS PARTICULAR SONG, THERE ARE ONLY TWO THAT REALL HITS MY HEART, lEA SALONGA AND DAURA FROM LIFE IN 3D. THESE TWO ARE THE BEST EVER TO BRING TEARS TO ONE S EYES. YOU DO A GREAT JOB, THE FAIRY VOCALIST. THANKS
Thank you so much for this incredible analysis. I love how you weave so much vocal anatomy into your reactions. I grew up hearing "Don't sing from your throat." Then Barbra Streisand said she wouldn't ever fix her nose because it would change her voice. I was 7 and took all of that very literally. Add to the mix family friends that were opera singers and you have a music obsessed teen who sounded like a dying animal when she sang. Decades later, enter Lolli!!! Because of you, I scraped my larynx off the roof of my mouth, dropped it way down, and even pulled my TA in the process. Now it's been fun to discover resonance that comes from doing the forbidden... singing from the throat. You are a vocal genius and I'm deeply grateful to you for this channel. 💜
I can't count how many times I've seen this performance, the talent on that stage is ridiculous. Philip Quast as Javert is sublime, his resonance and power..man
You are the most informative of all the voice coaches Ive seen commenting on Lea singing this song. I wish I had a vocal coach but just singing along with Lea the last two weeks and I sense some improvements. Too bad I did not try singing when I was young. I always kinda wanted to . . .
I have found your channel through your reaction to Dimash's SOS and love that you refrain from just swooning over every video to please the respective fans and gain views and followers, but instead you actually analyse the technique and are able to reproduce it. I would love to see your reaction to Allison Luff's rendition of She used to be mine, which is by far my favorite of all versions on youtube. Thank you and keep up the amazing work
I enjoyed your reaction as well as your analysis and explanation of vocal techniques that Lea Salonga used in this performance. Your being a professional vocal coach makes a big difference from many reactors who are obviously just collecting views for monetary gain. I'm going to subscribe.
I've watched this reaction several times now. So terrific! There are so many other Lea performances that I'd love for you to react to. Many other people have mentioned Regine Velasquez, so how about Regine and Lea's musical medley? It's pretty fantastic. I'm a huge fan of Lea and her solo performances, but also a lot of her duets. I'd also recommend (in no particular order): Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain", Lea rehearsing "I'm Still Hurting" from THE LAST FIVE YEARS, Lea singing "It's Quiet Uptown" at her concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2022, Lea and Josh Groban singing "All I Ask of You" and "The Prayer" at his concert in Manila 2019 (there's a vid of both songs plus their banter together on stage before and in-between songs), Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "The Movie In My Mind" at the MISS SAIGON 25th Anniversary Concert in 2014, Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "I Know Him So Well" at the London Palladium.
Despite the hate for the movie, I sure do love Samantha Barks as Eponine. Would love to see you react to her performance of "On My Own", even though no one can compare to Lea. Same with Anne Hathaway's version of IDAD. ❤
Never saw Les Miserables. You and miss Lea have inspired me. I hope UA-cam has her full performance. Such a beautiful instrument!!!! Lots of love and hugs back to you Lolli!!!
If you can Doug try and find this full concert. There are some exceptional performers featured. Les Mis is my favourite musical of all time. Extraordinarily powerful right the way through.
I very much recommend you check out the 25th anniversary concert too. Among reasons, Lea’s performance this time as ‘Fantine’ and the spectacular finale featuring cast members both from the 1985 original production and the cast members from other countries productions doing a multilingual “Do You Hear The People Sing” …. Spectacular!
This song, this performance in particular always has me in tears. Great analysis Lolli. I'd love to see you do a comparison between this one and Samantha Barks in the movie. Both amazing. ❤
Amazing reaction! Even Ms. Leah told in an interview that she lost her voice at one point in her career because of daily Broadway shows where the management sent her to a voice therapist to regain her voice. I'm glad you point it out. New sub here!
if I could like this video more than once, I'd do it... every single day... I love it attention you give to the most minuscule things in the performance and how it makes sense in the bigger picture. Im learning sooooo much in each of your videos. Thank you soooo much!
After watching so many reaction videos by vocal coaches, and singers, and musicians, this is the first time that I actually understand what "mix voice" means! Thank you.
I love your gleeful reactions! It is clear how much music inspires you. Please consider doing a reaction to Guy Sebastian singing “Standing With You” official video. His brilliant use of a plethora of vocal skills will excite you, I am quite sure, but it is his passion that will capture your soul! I love anything Guy sings and believe you can help us all find a way to bring such brilliance to our own singing. Much love to you, as always❤️
I just love the way u reacted to Lea, you even give some techniques that lea is doing, i can say that u are a legit vocal coach its because ur such a good singer as well, most of the so called vocal coaches cannot sing properly, it doesnt fit their teaching to what they are doing.
How is it that I can learn to be more generally observant, by listening to you deconstruct and give your insight into other people moving their gob? It is truly, and genuinely insightful.
Ohhh Musical reactions, I loooooove Musical songs. PTO and Les Mis are two of my special favorites, so thank you so much for this reaction to Lea Salongas version! This song is also some of the very few ones that for some reasons make me cry almost every time I listen to them, it's ridiculous ^^
You are truly a master of your craft. For someone who appreciates voice from afar, I learn so much watching these videos. Students who are actually wanting to learn and get to do so with you are very lucky.
Okay, so I've adored this musical and Lea as Eponine, so I agree with everything you said. But can we talk about how your reactions are so endlessly insightful, perfectly articulated, and thickly entertaining! :D "I'm opening a doooooooor!" :D :D
I have watched this before, but you just blew me away...again! You are an expert and know expertise, and Lea is among the very best of the best. She is the epitome of perfection. It's not an act. It's the result of natural talent, experience from childhood, training, and lots of hard work. She has a super work ethic. On top of that, she maintains this wonderfully beautiful character. She's a genuinely good person with high ethics. Her heart is in the right place for the oppressed and underprivileged, and she doesn't hide it. One never goes wrong with her. Keep up the good work. I learn so much from you.
I had never seen this lady”s videos and was prepared to be critical, especially being a keen Lea fan. She proves that she really knows her stuff however and presents her analysis in a knowledgeable and entertaining way. I look forward to watching other videos.
A vocal coach on youtube that has an actual understanding of how vocal folds work? My god…how did that happen? If I may make a suggestion, in the UK you have a large migrant population from the East Bloc. Look for a voice coach among them. The shear quality of their vocal teachers is beyond amazing. I spent a year with a Romanian teacher when I was preparing for my first licentiate. The magnitude with how much I progressed in that year was insane.
I've watched so many reaction/analysing videos of this performance but this is absolutely the best! I (as an amateur choir singer) learned so much from thos video! Thank you!

What I love about Lea is her tone. She's the only one who sang this song who's not shrill. Her voice sits perfectly in the key. The others sound like the key is a bit too high or a bit too low for them.
my professor pulled this video several times for our theatre arts class.
The whole cast is a master class, that's why they're called "The dream cast"
Lea is the greatest Eponine to have ever walked the planks.

FILIPINOS are masters of VOWELS.
Their language enunciate and pronounce all vowels.

I watched so many of that video's vocal teacher reactions and yours is the only that actually gave so much lessons and tips. Pretty much the most informative one imo. Keep up this good reactions/analysis!
I very much appreciate the expertise of TheFairyVoiceMother. You know she knows what she is talking about!
Somebody should come up with some kind TV show starring you ----- you are a character!🎥❤
Omg, I just found you and I love you. What I would give to have you as my voice coach! Best analysis and advice I've seen so far. You're amazing and Lea is a goddess
Aside from all the technical stuff, I really love your humor. 😂❤
most technical reaction ever, many tnx for educating. most Filipino singers are musically talented even if not formally trained; she might sound unique but her vocal artistry is not rare here in our country.
I saw her 2 years ago in Brighton. I was blown away by her stage presence.
How have you gone so long without hearing this?! It is indescribably sublime!
Ruthie Henshall as Fantine is just as amazing when she's doing "I dreamed a dream"
I have learned so much from your reviews. You are by far the best vocal coach reviewer on YT
You are the best vocal coach in the entirety of UA-cam. Your explanations are so easy to understand.
This is THE version of the song by which all are measured....
This means the absolute world to me to hear this. Thank you so so much for everything. You are just amazing 🩷
Love your comments to this amazing performance! Lea is indeed a remarkable singer!
You are awesome. I feel like I attended a master class taught by you - thank you 😌
You're amazing! I learned so much from your breakdown of her performance.
I always kinda wanted to . . .
I cry every time I hear her sing this.
Lea Salonga is an instant like for me, every time :D
Her enunciation is iconic
Despite the hate for the movie, I sure do love Samantha Barks as Eponine. Would love to see you react to her performance of "On My Own", even though no one can compare to Lea. Same with Anne Hathaway's version of IDAD. ❤
I know the voice from watching with my grandkids it's great to see the person behind the voice. BTW you are very talented❤❤❤
Love your video reaction cutie
Never saw Les Miserables. You and miss Lea have inspired me. I hope UA-cam has her full performance. Such a beautiful instrument!!!!
Lots of love and hugs back to you Lolli!!!
If you can Doug try and find this full concert. There are some exceptional performers featured. Les Mis is my favourite musical of all time. Extraordinarily powerful right the way through.
I very much recommend you check out the 25th anniversary concert too. Among reasons, Lea’s performance this time as
‘Fantine’ and the spectacular finale featuring cast members both from the 1985 original production and the cast members from other countries productions doing a multilingual “Do You Hear The People Sing” …. Spectacular!
This song, this performance in particular always has me in tears. Great analysis Lolli. I'd love to see you do a comparison between this one and Samantha Barks in the movie. Both amazing. ❤
“Her mouth is so mesmerising, it’s massive”. Pmsl, ha ha, what a great line. You make me so happy.
Amazing reaction! Even Ms. Leah told in an interview that she lost her voice at one point in her career because of daily Broadway shows where the management sent her to a voice therapist to regain her voice. I'm glad you point it out. New sub here!
If you ever question the grace or existence of god, refer to this performance and her blessed voice. Sheer Perfection.
if I could like this video more than once, I'd do it... every single day...
Thank you.
Lea Salonga is just immaculate. She is in her league of her own.
You're a very knowledgeable vocal coach. Analysis is spot on!
You can see her mouth shake with her vibrato... it's just ❤
This is by far the best reaction to this performance I've seen. Well done ❤
I had never seen this lady”s videos and was prepared to be critical, especially being a keen
Lea fan.
Wow, your voice is incredibly nice to listen to yourself
I love your blouse! Your reaction was amazingly educational and powerful. Her performance was chilling, haunting and brilliant!!
I've watched so many reaction/analysing videos of this performance but this is absolutely the best! I (as an amateur choir singer) learned so much from thos video! Thank you!
And your voice is amazing as well! ^^
Wow i love this so much! I love Lea! You are such a good vocal coach!!
Please do more Lea performance analysis! This was so fun.
@TheFairyVoiceMother I learned and enjoyed so much from your review of Lea and her performance. So informative. Thank you.
