Is expected increase in water bills enough to tackle sewage pollution?

Поділитися
Вставка

  • If the regulator Ofwat has its way - water bills in England and Wales could go up by an average of £19 a year until 2030. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...) But water companies have insisted it isn't nearly enough to tackle problems like sewage pollution.
    It's an issue that dogged the last government so today the environment secretary Steve Reed summoned industry bosses for urgent talks - and called for a "reset moment".

    Privatisation was supposed to increase competition. Now it's turned into a monopoly. Renationalise trains, gas electric and water. No more millionaire ceos.

      Think about it from a logistics view. Multiple sorting facilities, multiple jets & trucks all overlapping the same geography? It's like arguing it's cheaper to drive two cars from point A to point B instead of just one. Privatisation begins with competition & ends with merger & consolidation, concentrating wealth. Nationalisation results in unlimited budgets & inefficient bureaucracy. No win situation.

    • @RealUlrichLeland
      @RealUlrichLeland Місяць тому +2

      Privatisation only increases competition in competitive industries like consumer goods or hospitality. Nobody can or will shop around for critical infrastructure or life saving emergency healthcare, you get what you're given and privatisation will only create a monopoly.

    • @nigeljohnson9820
      @nigeljohnson9820 Місяць тому +1

      @@misterfunnybonesthe solution is to set the water companies as government owned not for profit trusts, with a mandate to provide the best public services and protection for the environment. This eliminates parasitic shareholders and government interference. Employee remuneration would be decided when the trust is established.

    I wish I knew the solution to this problem. Because on one hand, corporations have to pay more than their fair share in taxes as they got us into the climate mess we are in, so my answer would be, in a state of emergency (because it will be coming), the nation needs to take control of the water and distribute it fairly until machines are normalized to be able to drink ocean water. Then there would need to be a concerted effort to clean the space junk up, then find the nearest planet/asteroid with water, and mine it. That would be my suggestion. But the flip of that coin is, the rich buy the politician, therefore the water would be distributed unevenly anyway. And since it would be expensive to clean the debris of our atmosphere and train astronauts, build the rockets and machines, and fund research on how the transport would take place, companies would have control and would continue to control life saving water that is needed to survive. We normalize drinking ocean, that would sustain us for a time, but nothing is unlimited. Your water bill is going up due to corruption, your water bill will continue to go up as the planet dries up the rivers we abusively use. Somehow, we need to force our leaders to put their dumb Ego’s aside and combine efforts to save all species on planet earth.
