Our North of England Correspondent Clare Fallon joined wild swimmers in Lancashire to look at the problem of sewage in our waters and its possible impact on the election.

Blackpool's water has always been brown and the tap water is disgusting
Water companies will expect tax payers to fund the needed upgrades to make the waterways cleaner, but they will still increase their tariffs. A double whammy for us while shareholders laugh their rich, fat arses off.
Yes and that is true capitalism
Not only that, privatisation absolutely haemorrhaged money out of the country; the government pays huge subsidies to private companies and the money goes straight through them, out as dividends and out of the country.
Thank God that water isn’t controlled by greedy, foreign private companies in Scotland. Disgusting state of things in England and Wales, clean water is such a basic issue.
We need to talk properly about sewage. Firstly much of our sewage network is Victorian and is a combined system, so storm water and sewage share the same pipework. A times of heavy rain the system struggles to cope with the increased volume of water. Secondly many additional houses other buildings and additional hard standing creates very large water volumes at times of heavy rain. Lets hear from the politicians how they will solve the problem and what it is going to cost .
And not a mention of agricultural runoff 🙄

@leehenry5764 can people not see they can't get an appointment and they are struggling. The roads are shocking and the sewage spillages never happened where I live. It's down to greed and lack of infrastructure.
@@leehenry5764 When we were in the EU governments would get fined by the commission for failing to meet environmental standards. This meant there was an incentive to tighten up sewage regulations. See Commission v United Kingdom [2012] EUECJ C-301/10. I guess this is another Brexit benefit
There is no issue here, the people just got what they voted for. They voted for Brexit and for Boris who removed the European controls and now the waterways are polluted.
What is more important to people than water? It's not money.

Is it illegal to collect it and send it to the Prime Minister and his fellow MPs so they can look into the issue?
It would be pretty worrying if sewage wasn't an election issue.

No one should be swimming in a river. There’s already enough sewage in it before the companies process any of it. The amount of animal waste alone should make people balk.

Capitalist structures and regulations have not worked in this case. As someone on the right of politics, I believe water should be made public again, it's a fundamental.
dirty water . post office. covid cash for pals, nhs, roads , rail, to name a few of the broken things that might play into their demise

we complain about kids hanging out in the streets but give them little option elsewhere. no comunity centers, parks taken over by homeless n drug users where theres also no support n they cant even paddle in the rivers.

Who was in power when energy bills shot up in price? It was the Tories wasn't it champ, what part in all this did labour have? Nothing has improved under the Tories especially after fourteen years of austerity which has taken money from the working class and put it into the hands of the wealthiest in society.
