🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Over recent decades, large swathes of Slovakia’s wetlands have been lost. They have been drained to make way for agriculture as a result of the construction of dams for hydroelectric power, as well as for timber production. Wetlands are an integral part of the Danube floodplain landscape in Slovakia and draining them to plant trees has detrimental impacts on the environment. Wetlands store large amounts of carbon and are home to a diversity of plant and animal species that are specially adapted to the wet conditions. One of these species is the nationally endangered and endemic Pannonian root vole, which has declined drastically in Slovakia in response to disappearing wetlands. This project will turn forest back into a wetland by digging 650 meters of ditches. This will kickstart a “flood” of change and bring back a healthy functioning, sustainable and wilder ecosystem.

I’m a civil and ecosystem engineer in Louisiana. We do similar hydrologic restoration projects in the swamps. There are two so far, hoping for more because they are super cost effective here.
Like the Tabasco hot sauce in Avery Island recovering vegetation?
I'm guessing that it doesn't result in the death of as many trees as it does when applied in ecosystems with other types that are less tolerant of "wet feet." One of the downsides of many ecosystem videos is that the gains are accounted for but not the losses, the pros but not the cons.

hey Benjamin, is there any way i can contact you to get to know about any of this projects? im a fellow civil engineer from Costa Rica and im extremely interested in this subject related to hydrologic restoration (CR is almost 100% hdyro) so this is very relevant
For the snake at the end of the video- I believe that is called “Stargazing syndrome” and it is a neurological disorder. It can happen due to a variety of different reasons for example a bacterial infection. Unfortunately there is not necessarily a treatment unless the cause can be found…As for that little wild guy, I hope he can recover out there.

Seconding this. Stargazing can be caused by trauma, too--such as a heron trying to snag him for a meal, but only hitting his head with a glancing blow, or perhaps trauma from falling out of a tree. He probably doesn't have a good chance for recovery but he will make a great meal for another tier of the ecosystem, which in turn will provide meals for others, etc. Nature wastes nothing.
Great footage, showing that not everyone in an ecosystem has to be having a good day for the whole system to be healthy! Sometimes wildland activism videos trend towards being saccharine and overly 'clean' in how they present nature (clean based on western societal expectations) and it feels inauthentic. Plus then visitors feel ripped off when their experience in person doesn't match the edited, censored footage they watched in advance. It's so much better to show it all and include the random, messy and not always happy incidents that really happen in nature.

Looks like stargazing, if it wasn't rubbing against anything on purpose. Another possibility might be that it's about to shed. When they are ready to get rid of the old skin, snakes aggressively rub their head and neck on various coarse surfaces, trying to get the skin to begin peeling. This can look like the snake is in distress.
We have this in Brazil. It’s called “Pantanal”. It’s the world's largest tropical wetland area, and the world's largest flooded forest.
Depending on the time of the year, it gets dry and then ready to be flooded again. It’s really rare and interesting!
I know, because it's a natural wonder in Civilization 6, lol.

As someone who grew up In Bratislava and considers this ecosystem as part of my heritage I am incredibly thankful for the work you guys at Mossy Earth are doing to popularise the cause and helping BROZ in their uphill battle to save, rewild and repair at least partially the damage done to these wild floodplains by the damming of the Danube and other human activity.
Watching this fills my heart and makes me wanna cry. I'm so happy to be part of this work even if just indirectly, as a monthly contributor.

Well, to be honest, the ambience in this location was something I've never had a chance to record before. Such pristine, natural, and calming sounds made recording them an easy task. I could listen to the sound of rain and birds for hours. Thank you for the comment, and maybe you will hear my recordings in some future videos.

Slavic countries have many bears and beavers like in America when you get closer to the mountain regions and forests.
Most people that live with them dont like them because of the damage of property they bring. They flood entire roads till they look like lakes and leave fallen trees everywhere. Maybe they do good elsewhere but they are brutal here😅

Might be worth it until they start spreading malaria again, which was largely eradicated from europe much thanks to draining marshlands like this. I wonder if this potential risk have been considered. The ammount of wild life is nice to see though.
Especially in china, they are destroying their environment at an astonishing rate and instead of fixing the problem they caused they are buying up land in other countries. And then doing the same thing.

I would love an hour long ambience of the flooded forest. I don't live anywhere near there, and a plane ticket would be so wildly expensive, but hearing that was absolutely amazing. I would love more. The frogs, the birds, the rain. Heck, even the barking deer!
A normal ambience video would never get the beauty of the places you guys get to, so an ambience video from you would be amazing.

planting willows is apart of them being very flood resistant also a great idea to protect all kinds of insects. There are so many species of insects that heavily depend on willows to survive, and in most commercial forests they are cut down because of their unusable soft wood - im so glad that projects like this give willows a place to thrive!

This has to be one of my favorite projects so far! It's amazing to see how much life can be supported by flooding the forest.
The amphibian spawn at 6:47 seems to be a bit too wide for Bufotes viridis or Bufo bufo, it's probably from Pelobates fuscus instead.

I worked a couple of years in Canada's Northwest Territories, an area of tundra with thousands of lakes. Part of the job entailed pollution abatement measurements of the water quality surrounding the mine sites (the mine was several kilometres from the mill site). I was wearing a heavy checked shirt (think lumberjack) which made counting mosquitoes a bit easier. On many occasions I calculated my total personal mosquito population to be in the thousands. It was impossible to work with any exposed skin.
Unless you were this one summer student who was working with the surveying team. He regularly took no anti-mosquito steps (no DEET, no mesh head cover, no long sleeves etc) but somehow remained largely ignored by the ravenous skeeters.
The old timers set me straight. No scented soaps, light coloured clothing, plenty of DEET (which frequently dissolved certain plastics found in many things you might be wearing) are the way to go, better yet, stay indoors.
The masochist in me wants to see an after pic of that arm. Good lord.
@@docostlerI’m a bit like that. We were visiting some relatives, and towards the evening when the mosquitos showed up in great numbers, I was untouched in a T-shirt while others couldn’t bear to be outside anymore with more protection.

I study at the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava and visited the wetlands around Istragov just before this summer during a rainy day. I cannot express how happy I am to see Dunajské Luhy get the attention they need. It is such a beautiful region that is sadly overshadowed by the Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros waterworks (even though they are a marvel of engineering).
Also as a land surveyor and geodesy student I can only dream of surveying such a beautiful piece of land.
Definitely looking forward to more videos.

We Indians are too focused on what we need for the moment, we often overlook what damages might come on the long run . If we don't save the ecosystem nothing is gonna stay for our future generations to come.

It was good to see so many of you fighting to protect the natural wonders of my homeland, the Csallóköz region, which the Slovak megalomania is still trying to destroy day by day. It is a great achievement that you have been able to achieve flooding in this corrupt system, because the floodplain is slowly becoming a holiday area where there is no place for water and nature. I hope that one day the right and left sides of the Danube land delta can be reunited!

I am curious what Slovak megalomania are you thinking of
In this case, a hydropower system has been built on a plain, where several dams are needed to raise the water level. This cuts off the river from the branch system, the groundwater is lowered (other negative effects can be seen in the videos). All the water is manually controlled to flow down one of the longest rivers in Europe, which means that all the sediment is deposited at the dams and slowly accumulates in the reservoir, making it impossible to function in the long term. A bit crazy, no? Sure, it has its benefits, but overall it's not a good thing that it was built, but it had to be built....
Your mics are so good, you could make better relaxation videos than almost anyone on youtube.
Your REAL forest sounds, your REAL rain sounds. You should consider creating a branch series thats just a continuous recording of locations in your forest with mics during various weather. It would take next to no effort, and youd hit an enormous market of what seems like pretty nice people who would be interested in your content.
These are the kind of people I admire the most. Those who dedicate their time and effort to quietly do something that really helps the planet. Not many people know what they do to give recognition and praise, some even call them "crazy" for "doing nonsense". But they still commit to their goal and make a real difference.

I live in the middle of a wetland biosphere reserve area, part of a Unesco project. They work so hard to restore old ecological benifitial areas for both wildlife and people. This here shows me some of that process, and I know that it will be absolutely beautiful in a few years. From one Watar kingdom to another, stay hydrated 🥳

We have a lot of similar ecosystems here in central NY state. We're literally surrounded by streams, rivers, lakes, swamps, and various other waterways. A lot of changes in elevation and absolutely covered in forests. This reminds me of when I was a kid and we'd go out exploring and trying to find where some creeks and streams started.

Ever since I was a tiny little kid, I've always adored and thrived in these kinds of ecosystems and environments, especially doing exactly what you guys did, and (Siggi, was it?) digging out a channel. Don't know why, but I cannot express how much I love, enjoy and desire to make my own river channels, flood ponds, wetlands, etc off of pre-existing waterbodies. Its like a overwhelming maternal instinct. I just have to do it!
Siggi and the team he belongs to at BROZ bought the land and dug the channel. We just funded the work and help them with one or 2 things. They are absolute legends :) - Cheers, Duarte
I think its exciting to see young people not just taking an interest in the local environment but actually getting their hands dirty and trying to change things for the better it really does give me hope for the future of this planet!

@@MossyEarth In a previous video I asked you "What is the meaning of "nep"? Even the [CC] said nep, nap, nop, etc.. It took a different channel to show the HUGE sign that said "Knoepp", the family name in the UK who rewilded their estate. Please, always explain where you are. Spell it if needed. Just listening to the amount of life that was brought back into that area is amazing.
Love this, we need more native wetlands restored! Btw my sister is a wildlife biologist who's worked in the field (with tons of bugs) quite a bit, she uses Sawyer 20% picaridin bug spray and says it works great!
You can also purchase bug nets that go under your hat.

This is so beautiful. I loved hearing all the birds and frogs. Seeing so many hatched tadpoles was incredible. It makes me feel better, knowing that people like you are making a real difference.

The sound quality of all the recordings and hearing all the birds and frogs is insane! I had a random thought, I know a lot of people (myself included) go to nature sound videos for relaxation and concentration when working or studying - I wonder if you could take some of those recordings you already have and upload them (maybe on a separate channel?) with a picture talking about Mossy Earth and introduce it to more people that way?

Omg the bird songs are so beautiful and healing!!!! That smooth tree frog is wild, looks tropical. How mesmerizing to see the healthy amount to tadpoles!!!!!!! Definitely a sign of a clean and diverse ecosystem. I miss frogs from my childhood. Just moving 3.5 hours south are starch scortched barren land made by men eith increasing poison ivy coverage and its sooooo depressing and unbearably hot. So exciting to see how humans are capable of bringing BACK nature. Way to go!!!!!! Music to my ears and my heart! Thanks for the sacrifice of blood to the mosquitos...👏👏👏💚💚💚

Crazy how good story telling does a massive impact! I am aware of many project supporting biodiversity but this groups youtube channel really puts it out to the world and make you feel excited, concerned and involved. Hats off.
First time I saw your videos and those breathtaking views of the underwater and life in it, explanation of how things worked and was done was very much not just entertaining but informative, and made me want to learn more.
About those underwater shots or those animal zoom-ins, maybe you can make wall papers out of them and sell them on sites. I for one would buy.
