- Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana, the Hoosier State, and the site of the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500. It was constructed in 1909. With a permanent seating capacity of 257,325, it is the highest capacity sports venue in the world. The Indiana Statehouse is the state capitol building of Indiana. When Indiana became a state in 1816, the capital was located in Corydon. It was moved to Indianapolis in 1825. The building is designed in the shape of a cross. A large central rotunda is capped with a glass domed ceiling connecting the four wings. The building is four stories high.
