- The Iowa State Capitol is in Des Moines, Iowa, the Hawkeye State. The century-old building features a 275-foot gold-leafed dome. There are four smaller domes at the corners of the Capitol. Inside there is a grand marble grand staircase and elaborate woodwork, a very impressive law library and a scale model of Battleship Iowa. Travelling east from Des Moines and catching Iowa State Route 6 will take you to the Amana Colonies located in east-central Iowa. The seven villages were built and settled in the mid-1800’s by Germans seeking religious freedom. They lived a communal life until 1932. Currently, the colonies host a variety of restaurants, shops, wineries, breweries and lodging.
