I can't sit in lotus position (or even half-lotus) for a similar reason. I can work on my flexibility forever, but trying to position my femurs in my hip-sockets like that just isn't possible. I can feel the bones jamming up together. For years, I felt frustrated, because I believed I "should" be able to get better if I worked at it. I had never heard anyone say, "by the way, some people just can't physically do this, and it's fine." Yeah, I know this is about splits, but it sounds like it's the same principle. Pelvises and femurs are all unique, with lots of variation. I know I felt a big relief when I realized I wasn't doing something wrong, or failing at practicing correctly. (I'm not even going to try the splits. I know that ain't happening.)
I was in a car accident almost 30 yrs ago that damaged the base of my spine into my hips. I will never achieve middle splits again. Oh well. I still work on my mobility in other ways Thank you Liv!

Obvious question: if you can do the half middle splits on both sides, and no muscle structure involved crosses the center line of your body, then why can't you do a proper middle splits immediately? What is it that prevents someone who can do a half middle split on each side from doing both at once?
to expand a bit on the simple answer above, you also have to check the alignment of the pelvis. sometimes you can do the half you mention (only one leg) but your pelvis is actually twisted, so when you attempt the full middle split you cannot cheat. but the main reason is indeed the nervous system, as there is several mechanism to protect those joints to slip out of their place.
You can do it under general anesthesia. Your brain is stopping you because you are weak in that range of motion and it wants to remain without serious injuries.

Hi Liv, we love to follow ur amazing workouts. Could you please share a workout for mothers like me who are struggling to get their belly back to shape.
I'd just like to say, scientifically reducing fat in a specific area isn't possible, no matter what work out or diet you do. to lose weight in one area, you have to lose it all over. however, core work outs can give you more muscle definition which might be the aesthetic outcome you want. just don't beat yourself up when you do "lose your belly fat" workouts and don't get results, no one gets results on that alone. most of all, it's OK to be out of shape, it's not some kind of personal failure, it just happens sometimes. society is horrible to mothers for how their body changes after they've given birth, and it's not right. take your time and try not to blame yourself for results coming slowly.
I love your videos! You're so incredible competent! And the way you teach people is a dream! I would love it to have you as my trainer in real. And by the way: you look great and your smile is absolutely amazing ❤❤❤
Thank you for this test! I did it, and it confirmed what I already knew: that my right hip is more flexible than my left. It's been this way all my life. It's a little disappointing but also a big relief to confirm this. In the past, I've injured myself by trying to force my left hip and leg to do things that the right left and hip could do. Now I can relax and just accept the limitations I have on that side.
You might be able to fix this, when/if you do flexibility training whatever you do try to do one more set on your left side and eventually it'll catch up to your right
Though it needs to be done with huge caution, if it’s ligaments that limit your range of motion, they can be slightly stretched as well. It happens naturally with regular stretching. I used to not be able to do a lotus or froggy position, but slowly and surely my hips have opened up over the years, even though it didn’t feel like I was stretching actual muscles.
Thank you for this video (and all your videos ) :) . to ask your advice... Is there something similar for front splits? After five months of stretching almost daily for them I am starting to wonder if I'm just not capable of doing them...
no. if you have been stretching for months then changing the method (approach) might give you better results and also you need to strengthen the muscles involved. I found for me that working in season worked best for me. a few months with less intense stretching and more intense strengthening, a few months of the opposite and a few months of moderate both (basically dancing and moving, trying acrobatic tricks, training more martial arts with kicks., or just passing a long time each day on the limits of my range of motion without actually challenging new range) a good split can be 2 months/2 months/ one month. sometimes I even do 6/6/2.
@@talkingbirb2808 In fact I started about 2 years ago. Just not that consistently. This year I was like, I will focus now, and stretch everyday if possible. But looking at the pictures from 2 years ago it does not look like I made much progress, that's kind of frustrating.

I don't know if makes me feel better or worse that I passed the test. I am above average flexible--I can lay completely flat on my legs feet pointed or stretched, I have an oversplit in left and right front splits. But I have never even been close to middle splits. I've seen no progress in months of stretching and strengthening almost every day, where everything else improved easily. Please, I need them for turnout 😭😭😭
Serious question: would men also be able to do this? Since our anatomy is a bit different, so i'm not sure if i should even do the test, or if i risk injuries when trying that.
Neat! Is this related at all to ability to pancake? I don't much care if I can do a middle split but would like to pancake and have struggled mightily with that.
So awesome that you're working on your pancake! The main components to work really hard on here are compression strength and the ability to tilt the pelvis. Try elevating the hips on a few weight plates to give you more space to work with and to make that connection with the apt. Move lower as you progress and then do a LOT of seated leg lifts to strengthen your compression. :)
I always save the middle split for last. First I do front split because it's the easiest. Then stand split (vertical) front and back. And then I do the front split again before I do the middle split. And that's how I do it every day. Works for me.
I'm the most inflexible person alive, probably ever. I can barely get my fingers straight with my palm. I've seen people get their fingers upwards to almost 90 degrees. I can't even do normal pushups because my wrists do not flex enough to get my hands flat on the ground. When I completely straighten my arms from the elbow I still have about 5 degrees to go just to get straight. Same thing with everything. My knees don't fully straighten, my ankles are so bad my heels lift off the ground when I even think about doing squats. I've always been like this. I had a physio once tell me my ankles can not go further because it is bone against bone. He said he felt it when he tried to manipulate my ankle. Apparently one can tell if it is a soft stop then it is muscles and tendons and can be overcome with exercise. If it is a hard stop then it is bone against bone and nothing can be done about it. So no. I did the test. I can't even get my foot so high to even begin the test. And I do exercise regularly. I run 30 miles a week and so forth. My joints are just defective from the factory I'd guess.
Can you make a yoga routine with music? Even if it’s lofti quietly playing in the background. I want to follow along so badly, but I can’t get interested. Music is one of the biggest factors that makes yoga fun to me.
Ok great. Love this and now feel like I can achieve the split that I originally thought I couldn’t. I always got a pain in my hips when I got to a certain depth. Which of your videos do I follow as a beginner trying to do the splits? Do you have a programme I can follow?
Thanks for this! I'm at an odd stage where I need to train some more flexibility and mobility to stay limber in my active lifestyle, but I worry about over-stretching too, which could be detrimental to some activities. I'm a daily cyclist, and regular weightlifter. Would love to be able to do the splits again, and need more flexibility than I have now but.... would splits level stretching send me into problems while weightlifting?
I always had Hip pain When I tried the mid splits "toes up", pointing them Forward feels much better on my hips and just in general feels bad in a good way
I used to think its because of my genetics cause i got my front split way faster. But i almost got my middle splits now after stretching almost everyday!

Is it possible when I doe the excercises and flexibility comes back my soreness will diseappear? I do not use any kind of medicine. By the way, I did your test and I should be able to achieve a middle split. 😀
Body is adaptable. Most humans are practically capable of doing what other humans do in their own unique ways. Never believe you can't do something else. You can achieve anything while you're alive. Switch off from internet and go and achieve them.
Interesting that this came up in my feed… I have a plate and six 10 cm screws holding my hip together. 😅 I’m very flexible (flexion/extension) in spite of this and I can ride a bicycle in an aerodynamic tuck for hours, but I don’t think I’m going to be doing side splits.
this is exactly the video i needed to see, despite not looking for it. thank you! i'm subscribing on your ability to explain *why*, and hope your other videos have these types of explanations as i *need* them. ex: trying to learn to drive stick (manual transmission) - my father explained it as ”making love with your feet. you have to feel it and how the car responds”... result: i couldn't drive stick even after a week of practice (and possibly a few years lifespan off of the clutch) - my friend, mechanic's son: ”here is how a clutch works”... result: i learned how to drive a manual transmission vehicle in an hour, bought a 1989 manual isuzu trooper that afternoon, drove it home without stalling, and moved across country in it a week later. why why is important: knowing the why helps an intuitive understanding of the how and the performance of a task.
Oddly enough, my middle splits are the easiest for me. I think it’s because those are the first ones I learned so it just kind of stuck, but even after 16 years of dance, my left splits are barely there 😅 I really need to stretch my left more lol
You never meet a classiqie old school martial teacher. Every single student, young or old, will be able to do the 3 split after 2 years of practice. It felts like torture, but all did it. And without injuries. But i saw grown men cry for that flexivility
The side split you demonstrated involved the toes pointing upward toward the ceiling, but in a full box split, the toes rotate 90 degrees to face forward, parallel to the ground. This shift significantly alters the alignment of the pelvis and hip joints. I’m having trouble understanding how the toes-up side split indicates someone’s ability to do a box split. Did I miss something?
I was born crippled with a hip twisted several degrees out of alignment, I did manage to do the front split as a young man, but it will never allow me to get into the correct middle split position.

Damn, I can’t do it :(
My inner thighs have always been the tightest muscle group for me. No matter what I do, my straddle always sucks.
This was a great video, I need more help! Do you coach ppl?
Of course I will.
Please a video on how to get to do them
thoughts on hip adductor & abductor machines at gym to increase strength and improve middle splits?
not going to be very effective if that's all you do but not useless. it's kind of like the effect of deadlifts on being able to touch your toes
@@rinkuheroCome on man touching toes is easy whats difficult in that?
Thank you Liv🤩
Also wear sockies (like her) you get slipping so be careful. But the stretches are amazing
Hey i am currently practicing your 4 best hamstring stretches. Can i also incorporate full split training?
I also do stretches here on UA-cam I have been trying and I can say I'm almost there, ❤😊
Great video ❤
Wow! I was born to rock!
I always had Hip pain When I tried the mid splits "toes up", pointing them Forward feels much better on my hips and just in general feels bad in a good way
I used to think its because of my genetics cause i got my front split way faster. But i almost got my middle splits now after stretching almost everyday!
I’m going to ignore your advice and pretend I will get there 😂. Holy hell you’re almost at 500k! I remember doing your videos when you had 2K.
You deserve all the success!
Hi i am new here. i am 55 years old, male, 85 kg by 193 cm, had a lot of stress past year. I am stiff and have a lot of muscle soreness. I am done with this. Is it possible when I doe the excercises and flexibility comes back my soreness will diseappear? I do not use any kind of medicine.
By the way, I did your test and I should be able to achieve a middle split. 😀
I have been working on this for years
Body is adaptable.
😅 I’m very flexible (flexion/extension) in spite of this and I can ride a bicycle in an aerodynamic tuck for hours, but I don’t think I’m going to be doing side splits.
this is exactly the video i needed to see, despite not looking for it. thank you!
i'm subscribing on your ability to explain *why*, and hope your other videos have these types of explanations as i *need* them.
ex: trying to learn to drive stick (manual transmission)
- my father explained it as ”making love with your feet. you have to feel it and how the car responds”... result: i couldn't drive stick even after a week of practice (and possibly a few years lifespan off of the clutch)
- my friend, mechanic's son: ”here is how a clutch works”... result: i learned how to drive a manual transmission vehicle in an hour, bought a 1989 manual isuzu trooper that afternoon, drove it home without stalling, and moved across country in it a week later.
why why is important: knowing the why helps an intuitive understanding of the how and the performance of a task.
Oddly enough, my middle splits are the easiest for me. I think it’s because those are the first ones I learned so it just kind of stuck, but even after 16 years of dance, my left splits are barely there 😅 I really need to stretch my left more lol
Finally 🎉🎉🎉
I know I can’t do it. I am happy with that.
Love how she points up at an imaginary link at the end
Is there a way to teach our children how to do it
Thank you!
Okay so if we can do it on both sides, what is actually stopping us from doing both legs at the same time?
I could do it 😭😭😭 do i probably CAN learn a middle split, thank you thank you! 😭🥰
Now you start taining!
Good to know that I'll be able to do a middle split if I train. Now am I going to train for that is another question.
