In my opinion, home colour is perfect as long as you don't want to change your natural colour more than two tones, especially two tones lighter. Also, people who colour their hair at home should take into account the fact that,in order to avoid too much pigment deposit in lengths and ends, which render the colour rather "opaque", must only apply the dye on their roots when retouching and if they want to add shine and some colour to the rest of the hair, best thing is using a colour mask in a similar tone after the dye application.
I would definitely use the salon if I could afford it to support local businesses but at the moment I don't even afford to dye my hair, not that it matters I like my own hair colour too.
@theworldofcraig Hiya 👋🏻 just discovered your channel and already love it! How likely is someone to have a serious reaction if they've always dyed their hair for years but then hasn't for a few years? If they do a patch test as well of course 😊
I sat in a chair for 3 hours every 4 weeks for 25 years until Covid. I was scared to death to color my own hair, let alone use box color having been humiliated in the past. I finally gave in, and the results were wonderful! I was very relieved I matched the color. Not only that I could do it in the privacy of my own home. No awkward conversations, no longer a victim of being triple booked. It was a revelation and quite empowering. The last time I sat in a chair I was chided for using box color while he gave me a very unfitting mom cut that took months to grow out. That was 2 years ago and I now cut my own hair too, finally looking how I want to look.
Thanks for watching, so glad you’ve found what works for you. Some of us don’t triple book and are brilliant at making folks feel comfortable…. It’s brilliant you got fantastic results!
This! When I do my own hair I always get what I want. When I go to a stylist, I usually get talked out of what I want and leave with the same boring trim -_-
In my area, I don't know who's training them but I'm yet to come across a stylist that can actually do a one length cut. I went to college a couple of years ago to train as a hairdresser as its something I've always wanted to do. On a Monday we had the theory and a quick demo for 30 minutes which we were expected to remember for the Thursday. The tutor on the Thursday evening spent most of the time sat on the computer doing her admin stuff. She would quickly pop round to check on us and that was it. Week 3 we had clients and my client was so hacked off because when I went to wash her hair, the water was stone cold. Everyone else's clients were hacked off too. My client said to me, they don't seem bothered about training you all properly. I said to them, I know and said that's why nearly everyone in my area leaves the salons with a naff hair style/colour because they just seem to pass everyone regardless to their competence. I quit the course after a couple of months because it was a complete waste of time. I was so disappointed and its such a shame because people attend the courses with high expectations but leave feeling so deflated. I just wish I knew of a decent academy that trained people properly within the profession.
I have lots of clients who home colour, some of them are a lovely colour, i even tell them. Dont judge, not everyone can afford to have it done by a professional. I'm just glad the're in my chair ❤
I dye my own hair because it takes 3 box dyes to do it. Just the thought of how much it would cost me to go to the hairdresser to do my hair feels like it would break my bank. The only time I paid a stylist for a dye job was for my wedding. It was over $300 at the cheapest salon in the U.S. at the time, Fantastic Sams.
I was buying a lipstick at a salon, I heard a stylist very loudly humiliating a woman for coloring her hair at home. It was a small crowded salon, I almost told her off.
The worst bullying I've ever had in my life (and I grew up queer in the midwest of the U.S. so...) was at a London hair salong, a stylist trying to bully me into a dye job I could not afford. I'd just gone in there for the free lemonade and consultation and I wound up leaving in tears! Some people should just not be in jobs working with customer service...
Its so refreshing to hear someone not demonise home colour ❤ The outcome may not always be perfect but neither am I so at least my hair always fits me!
As a retired hairdresser I always told my clients what ever works for you is great. Never shamed always complimented. Also found out that box color's are the same except will fade sooner
I hear you. You never get the colour you want. It's always what the stylists want to do. They're also, really insistent on highlights and don't seem to want to do a full head of colour. I ended up with a huge stripe down the left hand side of my hair too which was really noticeable when I washed my hair and dryed it myself. The colour also came out a lot too after the first couple of washes. I even got red in it which I didn't want or ask for. Its horrible.
I color my hair at home because I've been bullied too many times by hair dressers. Every time I find a good one who understands my hair, they leave! ( one left to work at a funeral home because "dead people don't complain!). I reasearch, research, research EVERYTHING about the products I I use. I'm so glad I found your chanel. Btw, I'm 67 years old and still working.,so I want to look somewhat good, not dead😊. Thank you for your kindness to box dye users
Hi Denise, thanks for watching. I totally understand - I’m perplexed (and disgusted) by the way some folks think it’s ok to hurt people’s feelings for the sake of their own egos but there’s a lot of it about…it is sadly often championed by the industry’s digital platforms. I’m so glad you’ve found what works for you and my channel. And…let’s start calling it “home hair colour” - let them have “box dye”
Thank you for covering this topic. I have spent thousands on salon coloring and can't say I was ever really thrilled with the results. Pricing in salons is obscene!
@@theworldofcraigoh my goodness. What a kind soul you are to respond so wonderfully to this person and all those you have responded to. You're awesome. Great video. I'll be checking out your other vids and subscribe.
Wait what? How can a person who looks no more than 37 have 37 years of hairdressing experience? How?? I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel, I love your content and you exude a gentle and lovely energy. ❤
Goodness me, your kindness is much appreciated, thank you. I too am glad you found me, so fabulous to have you following along. And thank you, I’ll be 52 in June… 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
My sister is a stylist. She's always on my case about doing my roots myself with box dye, but I use olia, which is 60 % oils with no ammonia. I love the way my hair comes out. (I also went to cosmetology school, so I know how to apply it.)
I can afford a stylist to cut and color my hair; however, after many disappointing haircuts and colors, I took matters into my own hands. For the last six years, I have cut and colored my hair. My hair has never looked better; a woman recently said your hair looks straight out of a hair ad. She was shocked that I didn't go to a professional to have my hair look this good. The bottom line is just because someone went to school and trained to become a hairstylist does not mean they have natural talent. I am naturally talented in the hair and makeup department and rely on natural skills. I have paid hundreds of dollars to have my hair cut properly, and I always left unsatisfied. I went to the "best of the best," so to speak, and was left disappointed. I go to Sally's and use the Wella Demi hair color. I will sometimes even highlight my hair, and it looks fantastic. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for what you use on your hair. It's your head, not theirs.
Yup 15 years using a good store bought box at Walgreens. I’ve listened to hair stylist on UA-cam say the products are about the same. No shame in my game and it cost me $10 a box!
Hi. I am new here. I am so grateful for your video. I don't go to hair salons because I simply can't afford it so I do my hair myself using box dyes for many years. I never had any problems with box dyes.
This is so refreshing to hear, there’s too many hair UA-camrs who shame those who use box dyes. I’m planning on going to hair school later this year, and I want to be a hairdresser who is just as accepting as you are ❤
Well, I’m so pleased you found my channel and grateful for your kindness. There’s no power in being mean for the sake of clicks eh..?! Good luck with school, how exciting!
I don't dye my hair anymore (I decided to go grey almost 2 years ago), but this was a very interesting and useful video because I always hear some hairdressers demonizing box dye without understanding that not all people have the means to go to a professional.
It's so nice that you addressed the social anxiety thing, I don't have social anxiety, but I'm very introverted. Im from South America so a very social part of the continent, and I least in my country there is this culture where hairdressers usually ask a lot of personal questions to be nice and make conversation, and because they do this to be kind you can't just tell them "shut up, that's not of your bussiness", so I end up avoiding them. It gets worse when you are from a small town and all the gossip spread around from the hair saloon. I don't use box dye, beacause I have a ton of hair, and it would end up being less quality and more expensive anyway, but I've been learning a lot from hair proffesionals in social media, and if you end up f up your hair at least is your own fault, and most of the times it will grow anyway.
Well, it’s not just a matter of price that people would rather not visit a salon or have a freelance hair stylist visit their home and it’s important to me that all folks are included. Thank you for sharing your hair journey with us and thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
I can either afford to have my hair cut professionally or colored professionally, but not both. If I have to pick one to do myself I figure I'm better off coloring it myself than cutting it myself.
I use supermarkets hair dyes, I don’t go to boots and pay £3/4 more just for the pleasure of being in boots. I had colour done from stylists and the only difference I see is the very good conditioners that you have access to. But colours don’t last better and overall I get no benefits in going to a salon to get my hair done. Don’t even get me started on haircuts…I had to learn to cut my own hair because I was tired of them saying they can do what I ask for and coming out with something different. And this is a problem many ppl have…it shouldn’t happen so much. Hairdressers should be able to cut hair that go beyond a bob
Hi there, thanks for watching. I’m glad you’ve found hair colour that works for you, that’s great. Sorry you’ve not been happy with you haircuts…I perhaps wouldn’t generalise, there are many great hair cutters in the world.
I have only had ONE great hair cut from a salon that I loved and it was by a black woman. Unfortunately, when I went back she had moved to another town. All of the rest of the time my hair cuts have been horrible. I remember going to a hair salon because I wanted to look good for a first date. I told her to only cut an inch and she cut 4 inches. I left the salon bawling my eyes out. I also learned how to cut my own hair at home too.
@louisecoulter5882 Hi there, there is no real “difference” as they will be formulated to give similar (I’m generalising as I haven’t used home colour) results - it’s really a personal preference. Ammonia is not a bad ingredient.
Just watched your vid, nine months after its release but I enjoyed it so much that I couldn't resist to leave without a comment. what you said on 22' was SO true and lovely :)
This is wonderful to see! I’ve had a long history of both dying and cutting at home, and having both great and terrible results, but also going to salons and coming out elated or devastated with the result. At the moment I’m doing my own hair for financial reasons, and it’s turning out great, but when I can afford it I’d love to go to a salon again - mostly for the pampering experience!
So interesting. We have lots of clients that use home hair colour. They come to us for cutting and blow drying. Then occasionally will have use to the colour or a few highlights. Not ‘demonising’ home hair colour has kept them loyal to us. Even telling them where they might have missed a bit or given them application advice also helps. We also had our client use Casting Crème during Covid, we advised on shades and had no colour ‘corrections’ when we reopened, and the clients were happy they they didn’t have to look at grey hair in the mirror. Win win for us all.
Same here, I went in blond looking for highlights (on the regrowth parts) and then toner. But walked out with brown hair and roots so dark it does not even wash lighter with a clarifying shampoo. Which gives me the impression that it might be a permanent color on the roots while the rest of the hair does wash lighter but to lighter shades of brown.
I am a colorist as well with over 35 yrs behind the chair. I found this video to be soooo refreshing because I agree with 100% of what you said esp your final words about never making a person/client feel badly about using box color. I do often hear my colleagues blame anything that comes out badly for them on the client using box color when in fact we as professionals should know how to deal with that. Blame yourself not the client. And truth be told, on a Sunday night when our supply stores are closed, if I decide I've got to do my color this minute, I've used many different box colors and had great results. There was a time when I was younger and I could not afford going to a salon so box color was my only option. I would never judge or make anyone feel badly for that choice. Your kindness, understanding, and outright honesty is impressive and you have gained yourself a new subscriber. Much love and happy coloring.
Hi there, thanks for watching in so thrilled the video resonated with you. Thank you for your kind words, there’s been quite a bit of hair pro “bashing” in the comments and I appreciate you and your insight. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
I have always colored my own hair. And I have definitely messed it up in the past but trial and error I've gotten pretty good. I've used box colors and more professional colors from beauty supply shops and haven't noticed a huge difference in quality. my hair actually feels healthier after I use a box color sometimes. I appreciate honest review.
The secret is in the amonia %. 3% is the least damaging and comes in a plastic bottle which must be shaken well before each use. Using a good quality colour from hair supply shop like L'Oreal is probably the way to go. Use up to 3 colours for a good shade using varying amounts of each, half tsp to a tsp, mixed together with the amonia till it is a very soft creamy consistency. This video has given me the confidence to continue to colour my hair but cutting curly shortish hair is difficult to get right. Having the right set of mirrors would help. When I was growing up we had a dressing table set with two movable side ones allowing a view of back aswell. 😅😢😊
THANK YOU! I've been coloring my own hair for years. I try & treat myself to a pro color once a year with a nice re-shape cut. Finding a stylist that suits you is the hardest thing though. ❤😊
Very informative video, thank you, Craig! I've been using L'Oréal' Excellence Creme brand shade 8 for several years and have been very happy with it. I just wish they'd make the very same conditioner they put in the dye box to be available to be bought separately., too. Those conditioners are so much better for my hair than any other expensive product.
You’re most welcome, glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching and your kindness. Look for conditioners (there are plenty in the drug store) with dimethicone in the ingredients - they all contain a lot of it, it gives the hair “slip”….and it’s NOT a bad thing!
I appreciate your knowledge and that you want us as consumers to feel good. I turn 40 this year and just noticed a significant amount of new grays this morning which led me here. The guy who cuts my hair made me feel shamed about even thinking of coloring my hair at home but I don't have the $$ to have him do it!
Well, thanks for watching…the appreciation is mutual. And yes, I feel we should ALL have the BEST hair we can, so I’m glad you found my video. Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Omg thank god you have made this video I’ve done hair for nearly 18 years it’s all I know and I have the same outlook as this whole video. Well done! ❤️❤️❤️
First, Craig you look magnificent in that green sweater 😍🤩!!! This video was very informative and positive. It gives hope to those who do home color, as well as understanding for those who do visit the salon. Bravo to you for explaining both sides ❤.
Thank you so much for the informative vid, and for not demonizing home hair colour. I've had some brilliant stylists in the past, ones I visited for years, but either they moved, I moved, or worse (my last great stylist died, may she RIP). However, for every good stylist I've had, there have been a handful of bad ones. Because I educate myself about colouring my dark hair to medium blond, I know the basics of levels, colour wheels, etc. One stylist I visited after I did a box dye that turned out too dark (about a level 6) thought she could lighten the shade by putting a level 10 colour on top. I told her I didn't think that would do much. She ended up turning my hair greenish without any lightening effect and charged me full price for the botched job. She may have been good at cutting and styling hair but had absolutely zero idea or training or even self-education about colour, although her bio claimed she had 10 years experience. Of course, on top of it she chastised me about colouring my own hair. When I brought my concerns to the salon owner, she ignored my message. The result was spending about $700 total and 2 visits to another salon to correct the colour (no way I was going back to the first salon). It's been a couple of years since then and I've now learned to do my own foils, toning, money pieces, the whole nine yards. I get compliments on my colour all the time, and it costs me 1/10 what I would pay in a salon. I use a pricey Schwarzkopf Blondme bleach, 10 developer for slow lift, Castings box dye, and Olaplex. I tone once a week with a vinegar, cold water, food colour rinse. My hair has never been healthier and my wallet definitely loves it. I still go to the stylist for cut/trim a couple of times a year but I don't think I'll spend half a paycheck on colour ever again.
You are most welcome, thank you for watching and for your kind words, much appreciated. And thanks for sharing your hair “journey”, sounds like you really know your stuff and good for you!
Since I found my first gray hair when I was 16, I am an experienced home-dyer 😊. I used to buy box-dyes until I found a shop where I could buy professional dye. The fun part was that I could mix my own shade. I picked a natural tone that was close to my "average" colour (so more gray hairs -> lighter shade), and mixed in a tiny bit of red to make it a bit more exciting. Worked excellent. Some people had no idea it was not my natural colour, that was my goal, so I was very happy! Now beautiful gray hair. I am 52, stopped dyeing my hair 10-15 years ago (just before gray hair became fashionable).
So glad I watched this. L’Oréal Casting Gloss has been my go to Demi Permanent saviour for over 10 years when I’ve been left with bad or brassy highlights in a salon that need toning down or on occasion a total reset back to my natural colour. It has worked miracles every time 😂
thank you for bringing up the anxiety other than money problems of going to the salon! I'm very iffy about who touches anywhere near my head because it just makes my anxiety spike, so I've been cutting and dying my own hair at home for over 5 years now. what I do wish tho is for more semi permanent color options to be available in my region, I'm getting tired of only really seeing the 4 shades of LIVE semi permanent dyes (red, pink, blue, purple) and having the limitations of mixing my own shades due to lack of yellow in stock of any of my local or wider area stores. it's also quite difficult finding a lightener product that won't absolutely wreck my hair (last year I bleached my hair to platinum using a very strong one by I believe loreal and my wavy/loose curly hair has not yet recovered it's natural texture, thankfully my hair grows quick and I keep it somewhat short anyway) it's a lot of alchemy and educating myself on how different products work to better achieve the results I want while keeping the hair still on my head xD I have recently found out where on the packaging they list what volume the developer is tho! and I take that as an achievement
Well, I’m so pleased I can help, thanks for watching and sharing your insight…I totally understand. Have you perhaps tried ordering online? Your hair colour sounds great!
First time here, just love your demeanor, delivery, content, and personality! Been a bleach blond for 30+ years, and trust/love my colorist and stylist!!! Originally, I have dark Asian hair.
What a lovely, informative video. I used to box-dye my hair. I actually had a horrible accident once and, instead of reddish highlights I ended up with all-over Raggedy Ann Red bright red hair 😭😭😭😭. I now go, exclusively to the salon. A lot of the reason I go is bcuz I looooove the entire salon experience. It is expensive but I just factor the cost into my monthly budget. Also, my hair has grown SOOOO much since I stopped using box dye. I really can’t see myself ever going back to box dye…..but that’s just me. No shade to anyone who uses it….my best friend does actually. First time watching ur video. Love ur approach….and ur voice !!!! ❤
Oh Cathy, this comment is so wondrous, thank you. It’s so good to have a positive salon goers insight, what a joy. I’m thrilled you enjoy your salon time! Thank you for your lovely compliments! 👨🏻🙏🏻❤️
Thank you. I’ve been coloring my hair at home for years. I’ve even had hairstylists compliment my coloring. I usually buy three different colors on a spectrum. When my gray roots grow out, I pour a bit of the 2 containers in a small glass bowl. Then I get a small brush like a eyebrow brush or toothbrush to mix the two liquids together. I start at the front hairline to cover the gray then draw out some of the color to the ends, about 1/5 or less of the strands. Then I follow the directions to the end. 4-6 weeks later, I do the same thing with color #2 and different long strands. 4-6 weeks later, I do the same thing with color #3. I end up with my natural color with all my gray covered, and slight variations in skinny stripes to the end of my strands. The colors aren’t so different that they are noticeable, but they are different enough to look fabulous!
Awww Craig.. loved this and 100% agree about not discrimination about “ box dye” I’m sure there’s reasons for home colouring other then salon pricing and I’d never even thought perhaps someone may have been “ box” shamed 🤔 and in truth I’d much rather have a cut client and I have many whom do “ box dye” at home for reasons I’ve never delved into! As if they want professional salon colouring advice and technique then I’m sure they’d ask😊 I’m SO impressed you spent 3 hours for us in boots and without a security guard to be spotted😳😝😜… although your such a wizz with your fabulous editing 😃 I had to smile with your recommendation of castings as I also did the same and have to say I’ve also used it when I was training on my sister and got fabulous results😊 your knowledge of ingredients is feat worthy of Mastermind😝… oh I’d love to see you in that black chair with your James Bond attire on or even your “ MMP” now that would be gold 😜🤣 so once again you’ve enlightened us into the wonderful world of “ box dye” and it’s great to hear it’s not the devil as many would like us to believe.. so a million thanks for your time and effort and of course HOURS of editing.. adverts watched and disappointingly no “ just for men” ads🤣 wouldn’t that have been an irony 🤣🤣.. toodles for now Craig 🙌😘X
AWWW, PB thanks for watching and all your support. Yeah, I’m totally over it, it seems to reductive to me. Ooo, check us out recommending Casting during lockdown, it’s a great option as a temporary “fix” for sure. Ha, well, I did get asked to leave one Boots for filming…but PHEW, the next one went ok! Oh, I’m MMP to the CORE, ha. TOODLES friend X 👨🏻😘❤️
@@theworldofcraig oh hysterical… asked to leave 🙄🤣 they obvs don’t watch your Fabulous Chanel 😬😝… just take me with you next time pop me in a cage ( side of camera)😉 and just unleash me for my special “ CB” treatments and ankle snapping 😆😆🙌😘X
Hi! Nice to hear your voice about this! From my experience it is extremaly hard to find a good hairdresser, and even harder to find one that does not judge you if you do hair colour at home. I have really thin hair, very delicate and I found all kind of hair dye just too much damaging for me to can simultaniously have nice colour and a long hair. I lerned how to use herbs to colour my own hair, and I'm having great red results. I know every single thing I mix to my herb dye and when I hear from hairdressers - it will be green, I'm angry, becuse in my mix there is no single herb that could turn my hair green. They do act like if you do henna, you are making a big mistake and you will regret this, well not in my case! Anyway, I'm always go to cut my hair straight in the hair salon, and I'm always happy to see my hairdesser :)
Hello! Thanks for watching and sharing your hair journey….sounds like you’ve got it covered, wahoooo. Yeah, I have no idea why henna gets such a bad rap? I think it’s a hair salon “break room myth” situation.
Thanks for this. There was a period of time that I couldn’t go to a hairdresser and I had to do my own hair and now I feel I’m stuck doing my own hair even if I can go to a hairdresser just because I don’t like the whole guilt trip I am made to go through about having had done a box hair dye. So I feel heard and seen. Thank you.
You are most welcome, thanks for watching. Now I’m really glad I made it, there’s no power in making other humans feel horrible eh. Glad it worked out for you. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
No hairdresser should guilt trip you for using box dye. That’s extremely wrong. Please seek a salon that’ll treat you well, if you want to get it done professionally now. I had to search for quite some time but now I finally have a hairdresser who’s really good. I just made an appointment for my teen daughter, who has auburn box dye on her hair that’s grown out quite a bit now and my hairdresser only explained the options we have to either grow it out and blend it with a shadow root or low lights or continue dyeing it. She didn’t judge my daughter at all.
Great video, really interesting. I am currently using L'Oréal Casting and Garnier Olia. I use level 5.0 Brown. I always go to the salon if i want to lighten or have highlights for a change as I'm not confident using bleach. My hair stylist is lovely and always compliments my hair colour. Ive never been made to feel uncomfortable about using home colours. ❤
I have been colouring my hair for years. I always use a light medium brown. Many years ago I started using Root Touch up. It stops that darker over dyed ends look. I put it on the roots for 5 mins, then comb it through thoroughly , then leave for another 5 mins to give it as natural look as possible
You are an absolute delight to watch! You have such a kind heart & are so knowledgeable! I’m super happy I stumbled upon your channel. Thank you for sharing such great content with so much joy & personality! You’re awesome! 🤗💖
Goodness me, such kindness, thank you so much! I’m so chuffed you’re enjoying my channel and you’ve just made my week. It’s fantastic to have you here! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
You are a lovely gentleman and I very much enjoyed this video! I recently tried John Frieda Go Blonder Spray instead of heading back to the hairdresser for highlights. I have medium blond hair naturally. I was concerned that I might end up with an orange result but instead this peroxide based spray gave me a nice light gold blonde highlight. I applied it in thin sections and combed through from root to tip and then blow dried. It lightened very gradually and after several applications (I applied it over a week, each time I washed my hair until I finished the product) the color is as light as I had hoped and looks amazing! The condition of my hair is silky and shiny, not dry or brittle as it was with bleach highlights. I'm so glad I tried it!
I buy Revlon box dye black, I only used the color and buy my own cream developer 10v. Because I noticed cream box developer is very harsh for my hair it makes it thin and box doesn't say what cream developer volume number is and black only needs low 10 volume developer. You don't need and expensive box developer dye Revlon is great under $4 bucks once a month and 10 volume cream developer at a beauty supply is less than 10 dollars and last for maybe 1 year. So I mixed color 2oz with 2 oz cream 10 volume developer. 1 hair stylists gave me this recommendation and it has work for me fo so long no hair damage. So box hair dye trick is don't use cream developer inside due to unknown number volume for black 10v, for light brown or red 20v. For blond go to a hair salon 😂 because 30v or 40v might damage hair I only stick with dark colors 😊
That’s why I stopped using box dye, I’ve heard the standard developer in box dye is 20 volume and definitely not necessary when going darker. I was using box dye to save money and my hair got so damaged! I’m now using Age Beautiful permanent color with 10 volume developer the past few months and my hair looks and feels so much better. The problem with box dye is the ends do fade so you end up pulling through the ends and over time you can’t avoid the damage. One option would be to color roots only and refresh ends with a color depositing conditioner or gloss.
You are so lovely, Craig! I cannot afford the salon at the moment (but boy, do I miss it!). Thankfully, my hair is super healthy, so the home hair colour kit, does a good job... Thanks x the review❤
L’Oréal Nutrisse hair conditioner is amazing ( you get enough for 2 maybe 3 uses ) I would love for them to make a big bottle you could buy separately. I used to go to the hairdresser up until I became disabled ) Now I do my own. Some of the home dyes are great. I use purple shampoo if I feel it needs to tone my blonde hair in between re doing.
I’ve heard it makes the hair feel great…maybe there’s something similar in one of L’Oréal’s retail lines…? Well I’m really glad you’ve found what works for you. Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
@@theworldofcraig Yes, the Nutrisse conditioner is incredible. I've also wished they made a bigger one but sadly they don't. (Any advice on a conditioner with similar ingredients would be much appreciated as I've tried lots of expensive conditioner over the years and this is still one of the best things I've ever used.) The Nutrisse is also better at lifting than it says on the box; if you leave on for the maximum time (and up to 5 mins longer) you can lift by three levels rather than two. It's also one of the few permanent dyes that doesn't smell horrible or make my scalp itch and the colour is quite multi-tonal. I am a big fan. Thank you Craig for this video - I just found your channel and am really enjoying it.
@@rachelwaring5020 Hi Rachel, you’re most welcome, thank you for your kind words. Most of the post colour conditioners I looked at (not all and I haven’t used any of them) had some form of dimethicone (silicone - this ingredient is NOT bad) in them, so perhaps look for a conditioner that has some… Thanks for sharing your insight. 👨🏻🙏🏻
Lovely video. If I could go to a hairdresser you’d be my choice!! I’ve had too many bad cuts, etc to ever go back. The only time I actually loved a salon color was when we were in Mexico City. They were brilliant. I dye my own hair but am about to give up. Coloring grey is almost impossible ❤
I have used box dyes for years and the colours are great. A lot of box dyes do have a lots of metallics in which can cause a problem in removing them and can damage your hair. Go for a good quality box dye and read what’s in the dye. I found this video very informative
Thanks for this video, I have been colouring my hair for years, and need to do it again and was wondering if I should change brand.....I saw the thumbnail of your video and tbh, I avoided it to start with because I though it was going to be horror stories. I'm glad I watched😁 thank you, you have out my mind at rest as I use the castings range😀 So thank you again👍
Love this video! I suffer from trichotillomania and have hair dresser anxiety. Thank you for the info provided here. Can you please make a video about the hair color codes. Like 4.25, 4.15 etc❤
Thank you! Sorry to hear that, I’m glad the video helped. Ok noted - that is a little tricky as most brands use slightly different tonal value numbers but I’ll think of a way to get around it. Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
I totally agree with you ❤ and some of these boxes have Amazing conditioners in too , at the end of the day your stylist has more education on colour and it’s totally up to your client when they come back through your doors as they doo know the feel of hair is better from a salon , love your work Craig thankyou 🎉 Rae in Ozziland 🐨
As a person who has seldom used coloring in her hair (and now over 70), I found your information very helpful. Like many others, the cost to have professionally applied colour would be over my budget. However, I am considering using a product by L'oreal called gloss toner. Thought this kind of treatment might offer a boost & shine to my hair (fading copper) as we all feel like we need a lift from time to time!. Thank you sharing your research with us and I greatly enjoyed your video.
Hi Dianne, I’m so pleased you enjoyed the video, thank you for your kind words, they are much appreciated. If you try the gloss, let me know how it goes.
New subscriber here and i love this video. I was using root touch up in between salon visits (approx 2-3 times ) and whilst i loved the colour and convenience, overtime, my hair started experiencing a fair bit of damage from root to about 5-10cm down. I now try and go to the salon more often and use root sprays in between (my hair grows quite fast so greys at the side reappear within a couple of weeks)
Great objective feedback. I’m not a trained colourist, but worked for Schwarzkopf Professional & learnt to colour through the technicians. I too compared colours pro & boxed and they’re virtually identical. I’m a session stylist & makeup artist..so many hairdressers have commented on how good my colouring is..I’ve used both professional hair colour & boxed. Schwarzkopf is my fav for neutral tones in boxed dye & professionally but used Casting by L’Oréal & it was fantastic as well. ❤
Wow, you're such a lovely person ❤ Thank you for pointing it out! Finally somone talks about it! I've been using box dye for years, I really enjoy it and I've always thought there's nothing wrong with it :)
Hi great vlog. I split my packet dyes, so I get two uses from one now, I'm only doing the roots so why waste it, I have thick shoulder length hair, saving so much money😊.
Wow that was a quick unexpected reply, thank you, I'm glad you think it's a great idea, do it right you can't go wrong. Keep up the good work, very precious advice. 🙏🏼 @@theworldofcraig

Good to hear someone does that. I’m fed up of buying boxes but using less than half as I’m only doing my roots. I’d considered only mixing half but wasn’t so sure it was a thing others did. Feel much better now, thanks 😊
This makes me so happy lol. My mother was a hairdresser for years, but she uses garnier on her own hair! Have you ever seen the Madison reed “home colourants”? They’re a little on the pricier side, but are supposed to be “salon quality”
Interesting and useful, thank you. Just getting a few greys but don’t want to go to a salon after too many colours that weren’t what I asked for in the past. 😂 this has helped me decide to give it a try on my own ❤

Wow this was so insightful 👏 absolutely love your video. 1st time viewer 😊 I have had amazing experiences with hairdressers and home dyes. I think both definitely have positives and if you have a great hairdresser, it can be a enjoyable experience. I just love you gave good points for both . Thank you 😊
Thanks Shayla, that’s really kind and I appreciate you watching. There’s been some horrible comments the last few days and you just made me smile. 👨🏻🙏🏻✅
@@theworldofcraig I would hope other commentors would see that you are providing insight into both options without discriminating either as both have positives for the client/consumer. I saw a professional giving facts that others may not disclose but also letting us see that having that one on one experience with a professional hairdresser provides something you can't buy. I think if everyone had the money that you can't beat a good hairstylist but as you pointed out that option isn't for everyone and you taught us what to look for in box dyes. I appreciate your time and care in this video. So much so I became a subscriber so thank you 😊 🙏 ☺️
Thank you so much for your honest and through presentation! I do mine with Loreal and I di love the salon when I treat my self ;) So Thank you for all your education on each product!
Love how thorough and helpful and so mindful of us that have had horrible hair salon experiences I cut and Dye my own hair now and don't budge. ❤ No shade to lovely hairstylist that truly are able to take the time and care it takes to care for another humans hair as if it were their own.
My experience with hairdressers started at 15 with a perm. It was the 80s. I ended up with an Afro! I used to have straight hair. My hair was so burnt I had to cut all and was left with 2cm long hair! It did not improve much from there. I have had so many disasters both in Paris and London Salons that I eventually took matters into my own hands. I colour and cut my hair myself since 2018. My hair is great and not burnt or destroyed by colour badly applied or for too long by hapless hairdressers! I also had cuts so bad I had to go back home fix the cut myself and on one occasion wear a hat for few months, despite just asking for a trim and showing picture for safety. It was horrendous and no one will ever touch my hair again, cheap or expensive. 🙁
I would love to see actual tests. I think you make good points- Ive been using box dye because of finances. I don't like schwarzkopf and found it to be the most off on color, usually darker and muddy. Color silk, the cheapest, has been the best and holds really well. Garnier actually really does make your hair better
Hi there. So I can’t actually test on human models, I want to create content using pro hair colour with them, seeing as that’s what I use day to day. I have however something in the works where I test out a few…it won’t ever be all of them. It’s generally the conditioners that make your hair feel great but of course some formulas have more advanced ingredients. Thanks for watching.
I don’t care for Schwarzkopf either. I used it for a little over a year for root touch up every 6-8 weeks and would pull through ends to refresh color every 2nd or 3rd root touch up and it really dried out my hair, I think the developer is a high volume either 20 or possibly 30! I now use Age Beautiful permanent color either a level 4 or 5 reddish brown with 10 volume developer and my hair feels so much better. If you are coloring your hair darker shades level 1-5 you don’t need 20 volume developer and all the unnecessary damage. I used to use Garnier Nutrisse and that didnt damage my hair. Best bet if you find a color that works for you stick with it.
The only issues I have with box dye is that you never know what volume developer you are getting and you don't know what kind of pigment load it has. That can be easily circumvented by testing and experimenting so you get to know the brands. Either way beauty supply stores like Sally Beauty here in the USA contain brands like ION and Wella where you can get your color and developer separately. I always recommend those to people who want to color their own hair instead of box kits, as they are also easier and cheaper when customizing a formula 🙂
@@fightthefairy That’s surprising to me. Not even on Amazon can you find them? Ion and Wella colorcharm are like loose box dye brands and there are more of them. They can be bought from Amazon in the USA as well.
Thank you for this. I've had my hair professionally colored 3 times (I'm 57), mostly for special occasions and one time I was shamed so bad, in front of other customers, that I never went back! I've colored my hair at home most of my life because I never stray much from my natural color and seek to cover a few grays here and there. For the most past, the results were good! Thank you for understanding that times are tough financially for many people and coloring one's hair at a salon can be on considered a "luxury" and that many people don't have that as an option.
You’re most welcome, thanks for watching. Yes, I truly believe everyone should have the best hair they can and achieve that however suits. It’s all good in my “world”.
Here, we have a national chain of beauty supply stores called Sally where one can buy a certain amount of professional hair supplies, including toners, developers, masks/conditioners. I do my own color, including bleaching with 2nd stage toners. Only once have I seriously damaged my hair. I have my hair nearly white at the m😊moment which looks fabulous. The color is better and boxed supermarket colors. It’s tricky but I get best results with level 40 developer. With this video, I see that this shop is a Boots drugstore. The same chain here is Walgreens.
This is so refreshing to hear a professional hairdresser not diss on any at-home treatments. I used to go to a salon for my roots touch up, but with the recent surge in prices I just unfortunately can't afford it as a student anymore. :( So, thank you for this, Craig! ❤️ Perhaps a quick question on at home dyes, specifically on Manic Panic's Hot Hot Pink.. How would you suggest removing the colour at home (the base underneath is a level 9-9.5 blonde), while damaging the hair as little as possible? I don't know if an ammonia-based or bleach-based dye remover would be the lesser of two evils? 😅😝
Hi Bella, thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed the video, I felt it needed to be made. I have a video here on my channel that answers your question - ua-cam.com/video/ShqJ5H84460/v-deo.htmlsi=Ln0DaVpMcQ8FpVbt I do go over my preferred process in a few other videos too - of course there are many factors in removing colour but I hope the videos help.
People are so wrong when it comes to ammonia free products... Consumers have been fooled into thinking that ammonia free is better for the hair, which is absolutely not true. The ingredient that does really damage the hair's chemical structure is H202, whose oxidation,on the other hand, is accelerated by NH3. Unfortunately, H202 makes no distinction among the different proteins/peptides in the hair, melanin being just one of them. The bonds between sulphur atoms in the cysteine molecules are also oxidized by H202, and too many are broken, hair will have reached the "no return" point... Furthermore, NH3 is a gas that dissipates so quickly, on the contrary, ammonia free products use a molecule called ethanolamine, which may stay for days on the hair as it is not a gas and does not dissipate that easily...By no means do I mean ammonia is beneficial for hair however, it is not as "damaging" as the industry tries to make it seem. If you really want natural hair dyes that cause no damage whatsoever, henna is the answer...
@@keanux That was super insightful, thank you so much! I was literally thinking that if ammonia is so widely used, perhaps it's the lesser of evils compared to what they could use if there would be no ammonia... 🤔 In that case, I think I'll go with the bleach-free dye remover, but which has some ammonia in it. I understand that some damage is still inevitable, but hopefully it will be minimal.. 🤞
I’ve been dyeing my own hair at home for years. There have been a couple of instances in the past when I’ve paid a small fortune to get it done in a salon and they’ve messed up my hair so I stuck to doing it myself. Even though it was often patchy, I didn’t mind messing up my own hair so much as it was a lot cheaper! Over the past few years I’ve been bleaching it, and I recently had to stop as I’d developed dermatitis on my scalp and the bleach was irritating it. There was a lot of trial and error trying to get my ends the same colour as my roots! (My hair is naturally dark/dirty blonde though I’m starting to get a few greys). I initially used the Bleach London Super Natural kit which faded fairly quickly and gave my hair a slight green tinge in places (which was something I was already cautious about and the product info claimed wouldn’t happen). Then I tried their Instant Coffee colour which was slightly better but not worth the money in my opinion. I then tried Josh Wood’s 7.5 shade. I was sceptical as I could see no difference in the before & after shades on the box (I bought it online and if I’d seen the box up close I probably wouldn’t have bought it, especially as it’s a lot more expensive than box dyes I’ve used in the past), but it turned out great. It perfectly matches my natural colour and covers my greys, and I’ll definitely be buying it again. Edited to add that the last time I had my hair cut (it was a couple of months ago and just before I started using the Josh Wood dye), the hairdresser told me she was impressed that my hair was in such great condition, especially considering I’d been bleaching it at home for years.
I've only ever used a joico high lift and 30 to 40vol on my own hair for the past 13 years (I'm 35) and it's aced every time after a lot of trauma and my hair falling out. A hair dresser gave me the script/formula and I haven't budged since. I get compliments on my hair colour all the time. I must be an exception to your rule, haha. It creates my perfect colour.
Sounds FAB. No no, it’s personal preference, it’s more to do with the kind of results I and my clients enjoy…there’s nothing bad about it, just my opinion. Glad you get the results you’re loving! Thanks for watching.
I used a lot of home hair color on family members and friends as an apprentice as I just didn’t want to spend money on professional products and despite them being a bit runny or sometimes smelling more funky the outcome was always phenomenal 😂 professional powdered bleach however I always preferred because it’s not as liquid and much more predictable than over the counter and way less expensive 🤑
Hi there, thanks for watching. That’s a great idea to get the techniques down. I’ve never tried “drug store”/consumer lightener but yes, from what I’ve seen, you don’t get a lot…
Thank you Craig.❤ You have made me feel so much better about colouring my hair at home, which I have done for years. After a bad experience,. I haven't been back but really do need to take the plunge now and hopefully after7 years i can find someone who wants to work with me 😊
I dye my hair at home after a traumatic experience at a salon where my colour was so bad I felt ashamed to go outside, then went tk another salon forna correction and was there for hours having treatments done I was outright saying no too. I have spinal damage by the end i was crying in pain from their chairs, I was begging them to just wash my hair I didn't need a forth 55$ mask I said no to. I called my mom even though I'm a grown man to come get me as I felt genuinely scared, I was saying NO and having three people putting it on my head anyway over and over. I left with not even good hair. The third salon was good, I was honest I usually dye my hair at home because its fun and I plan to return to that so she actually sent me home with free extra dye in the custom purple she blended for me. Gave me some tips on how to do everything myself even trimming. I went back to her flr bleaching my roots until I moved and she always complemented my home dye jobs. Always asked what products I use too so she had more affordable recommendations for clients, she never pushed the salon ones on people just said if you liked anything they have it but my hair is nice so doesn't need anything new.
Thank you so much for this, Craig! I've had to use box dye on my hair as I just can't afford the money it costs to have my hair done in a salon. I've usually been really pleased with the results from my box dye and always make sure I follow the instructions regarding allergic reaction testing. Salons charge way too much in my opinion. They're not always that brilliant, either... and don't get me started on cutting! XXXXX
Hi Jay, thanks for watching and your kindness. Glad you’ve found what works for you. It might surprise you that just the products alone (before rent/rates/staff etc etc) for a root retouch cost me about £50….
I have used box dye on a many an occasion and the only problem I have found with it, is when I have only bought one box and I needed two because my hair is longer than I anticipated. That is my problem not the box dyes, so since I realised that I buy two boxes instead of one. Often I watch certain hair people on here, who cast a snobbish comment at anyone who uses box dye which annoys me so much. I do not live near a Sally Beauty so I will visit my local Superdrug or Boots. I cannot afford to visit a salon, I don't need the snidey attitude and so if I get bored with my hair, I will use box dye. Thank you for remembering that we are all different, we have different budgets and frankly many seem to forget that we have feelings.
Hi there, thanks for watching and sharing your insight - great call on buying 2 lots, more is always better with application. Thank goodness we’re all unique eh! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
I cut and colour my hair for over 10 years. After several bad experiences at salons, some of them were expensive, I decided to give it a go myself. With the help of UA-cam videos, I manage a cut I am happy with. Before, I always ended up with short hair because I had to go to a different salon to fix a messed-up hair cut at the previous salon. I have light blonde hair and use the same box dye all the time. In summer, it dries out a bit, but conditioner and regular at home trims keep it in good condition. It is a lot of work, but it is worth it. And if I mess up the cut a little, I can fix it and it did not cost me anything. Thank you for your video. It is very informative and non-judgemental. I am sure there are many good hairdressers, but unfortunately I have only had bad experiences which resulted in disappointment and dreading the next visit.
Do box dyes say what volume developer is in there? Also, I think calling something “no bleach bleach” is misleading because it gives the impression it’s ’safe’, but the volume of developer could be super high for all anyone knows and that can potentially cause a lot of damage. PS. I’m so happy I found you on UA-cam! I followed you on Instagram years ago but I ended up deleting Insta because I was sick of it 🤣
The last Hairdresser I tried was singing the virtues of a root lift product. She put some on my hair and promptly blowdried it without lifting the roots. It was flat to my head as though it was glued down. It had no movement whatsoever I realise when I got home that all her customers had very long hair and didn’t get the hair lifted from the roots perhaps as much I will not be going back
Thank you for the informative and knowledgeable video - very much appreciated (I've learnt lots I didn't realise before!). 🙂 I started box dyeing my hair during the pandemic, after going to a salon for years for highlights. There was so much choice available, but in the end I went with the John Frieda Precision Foam Colour range as the foam application seemed to be an easier way to apply colour in a non-drip way with great coverage. I was excited when you hovered near the JFPFC box dyes and hoped to hear your take on them. Perhaps in 'Box Dyes - the sequel'? 😆 I
Hi there, you’re most welcome, thank you for watching. I did cover them but the footage didn’t make the edit - the music in store was too loud, even with my mic - I’m sure they’ll be in the “sequel”, ha. You might enjoy tomorrow’s video, the first in a new series - “How to get the BEST from….” - starting with home hair colour.
Many thanks for this helpful information. I have been struggling with paying almost $400 to get my dark hair coloured semi-permanently because I am now blessed with a smattering of grey which just comes through far too fast to be able to accept that kind of monetary outlay every month! Permanent colouring isn't an option either as I'd just have the same problem with the roots. I'm now of the opinion that home colouring is my best option but have been far too nervous to go down this route after hearing horror stories from my hairdresser and also reading them online. This video has given me the push to see how it goes after being a salon-only user for decades. One question for you. I live in Australia so I don't know if this is the same in the UK but we can buy individual (big brand) products eg colour, developer etc. from hair and beauty stores and I wondered what the pros and cons are of that option rather than a 'box' off the shelf?
You’re most welcome, so glad it helped - there is a recent video full of tips on how to get the best results when colouring your own hair here on my channel. So there really is no difference in product as such, it’s more than the “box dye” is pre formulated and some pro colour might need a “mix” of shades if you’re covering grey etc etc. More developed formula in pro colour will cost more, just as more sophisticated home colour does. Let me know how you get on. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Hi there, thanks for watching! This is NOT a space to be mean and negative about hair pro’s, PLEASE be respectful. 👨🏻🙌🏻✅
@@keanux Hi there, thanks for watching and sharing your insight.
I would definitely use the salon if I could afford it to support local businesses but at the moment I don't even afford to dye my hair, not that it matters I like my own hair colour too.

My story exactly 😜
I have lots of clients who home colour, some of them are a lovely colour, i even tell them. Dont judge, not everyone can afford to have it done by a professional. I'm just glad the're in my chair ❤

I dye my own hair because it takes 3 box dyes to do it. Just the thought of how much it would cost me to go to the hairdresser to do my hair feels like it would break my bank. The only time I paid a stylist for a dye job was for my wedding. It was over $300 at the cheapest salon in the U.S. at the time, Fantastic Sams.

Unfortunately some folks think it gives the “power” to be mean about home colour. Gee.
Odd the lady wouldn't have gotten up and left, I sure would have. She was obviously there for a service, not to be berated.

My home box dying is ALWAYS perfect. It NEVER was in any hair salon.
I reasearch, research, research EVERYTHING about the products I

Hi there, so pleased you found what works for you and check you out with your creative skills, brilliant! Thanks for watching and sharing 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
I have been to plenty of hair colorists and some need more training.
@@theworldofcraig Thank you for making this amazing video 😌
@@raspberrykissable And thank you for your kindness 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Yup 15 years using a good store bought box at Walgreens. I’ve listened to hair stylist on UA-cam say the products are about the same. No shame in my game and it cost me $10 a box!
Hi. I am new here. I am so grateful for your video. I don't go to hair salons because I simply can't afford it so I do my hair myself using box dyes for many years. I never had any problems with box dyes.
Hi there, thanks for watching, you’re most welcome, so glad you got to see it. Thanks for taking the time to comment, it means a lot. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Good for you! And I’m so glad you got got see it, thanks for your kind words and for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
How did you go back to your natural colour, did you have it all cut off or just grow it out please
Hi there, thanks for watching. Glad you’ve found a solution that works for you.
Agree 100% with your comment. There are very few hairdressers these days that can cut beyond a bob.
Same in Romania!
@laikanbarth Sorry to hear you’ve not always had the best experiences…but I’m glad you have some great hair do memories! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Honey, you’re a very kind human being. Thank you for your fun and smart video.

I’m a hairdresser and I’ve had some fantastic results using at home colourants. Great application does help of course. Very informative video ❤
Hi there, thanks for watching and for your kind words. Yes, that’s a big part of it eh, thanks for sharing your insight. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨

Please can you tell me the difference with amonia or without. Always wondered. l would use a light ash blond.
Awww, thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it! I can’t remember what I said but I’m glad it resonated with you 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
This is wonderful to see!
And your kindness is wonderful, thank you and thanks for sharing your insight.
Agreed, there’s no power in making someone feel rubbish eh?!
Well, that’s exactly what I’d expect from you and your lovely team. 👨🏻🙏🏻❤️
I have anxiety in hair salons because of bad salon experiences
That makes me sad. I hope you’ve found a solution that works for you. Thanks for watching
I only check the bad reviews on google cuz who knows if the good ones are real! I have yet to find a pic of a haircut as bad as my experience!
Just came across you. Thank you for this, I use box dye as cost of living has me struggling! You are lovely 😊😊
And thank you for your lovely kindness! Really glad you found me and something that works for you 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
I have always colored my own hair. And I have definitely messed it up in the past but trial and error I've gotten pretty good. I've used box colors and more professional colors from beauty supply shops and haven't noticed a huge difference in quality. my hair actually feels healthier after I use a box color sometimes. I appreciate honest review.
Thanks for watching and sharing your insight.
You’re most welcome, thanks for watching. I know it can be tricky but thee are lots of us out there! 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
Thank you. Every time you said 'focus' I thought you were talking to yourself! Finally you mentioned the camera. 😂
And thank you for watching. Ha, there’s been a few folks who’ve said that, I don’t even realise I’m looking through a camera any more!

Love your hair “journey”! Thanks for sharing.

So glad I watched this. L’Oréal Casting Gloss has been my go to Demi Permanent saviour for over 10 years when I’ve been left with bad or brassy highlights in a salon that need toning down or on occasion a total reset back to my natural colour. It has worked miracles every time 😂

You’re most welcome, so glad you enjoyed it and you do what makes you feel GREAT! Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
thank you for bringing up the anxiety other than money problems of going to the salon! I'm very iffy about who touches anywhere near my head because it just makes my anxiety spike, so I've been cutting and dying my own hair at home for over 5 years now.
what I do wish tho is for more semi permanent color options to be available in my region, I'm getting tired of only really seeing the 4 shades of LIVE semi permanent dyes (red, pink, blue, purple) and having the limitations of mixing my own shades due to lack of yellow in stock of any of my local or wider area stores. it's also quite difficult finding a lightener product that won't absolutely wreck my hair (last year I bleached my hair to platinum using a very strong one by I believe loreal and my wavy/loose curly hair has not yet recovered it's natural texture, thankfully my hair grows quick and I keep it somewhat short anyway)
it's a lot of alchemy and educating myself on how different products work to better achieve the results I want while keeping the hair still on my head xD
I have recently found out where on the packaging they list what volume the developer is tho! and I take that as an achievement
Well, I’m so pleased I can help, thanks for watching and sharing your insight…I totally understand.
Have you perhaps tried ordering online? Your hair colour sounds great!

Sounds like a gorgeous result! So glad you’ve found what works for you, thanks for watching.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
That’s great to hear on both counts, glad you’re getting the BEST hair! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
I have been colouring my hair for years. I always use a light medium brown. Many years ago I started using Root Touch up. It stops that darker over dyed ends look. I put it on the roots for 5 mins, then comb it through thoroughly , then leave for another 5 mins to give it as natural look as possible
Really glad you’ve found what works for you, thanks for sharing.

It’s a good formula - I had all my clients using it during lockdown. You’re most welcome, thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻💛,
You are a lovely gentleman and I very much enjoyed this video!
Thanks for watching, glad you’ve had good results and found what works for you.
Thanks for watching and sharing your insight.
Thanks for the tip!
And you are so kind! Thank you…and thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Most of the post colour conditioners I looked at (not all and I haven’t used any of them) had some form of dimethicone (silicone - this ingredient is NOT bad) in them, so perhaps look for a conditioner that has some…

I have used box dyes for years and the colours are great. A lot of box dyes do have a lots of metallics in which can cause a problem in removing them and can damage your hair. Go for a good quality box dye and read what’s in the dye. I found this video very informative

They sure do. Thanks for watching! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Thanks Jo and thank you for subscribing, really appreciate your support.
Both myself and my clients are BIG fans of the sprays, so GOOD.
Thank you. Sounds like you’re getting GREAT result, wahoooo. Thanks for watching.
Wow, you're such a lovely person ❤ Thank you for pointing it out! Finally somone talks about it! I've been using box dye for years, I really enjoy it and I've always thought there's nothing wrong with it :)
Well, I felt the video needed to be made…
Thanks for watching and for your kind words.
And yes, there’s nothing wrong with it at all. 👨🏻🙏🏻
Hi great vlog. I split my packet dyes, so I get two uses from one now, I'm only doing the roots so why waste it, I have thick shoulder length hair, saving so much money😊.
Hi there, thank you…and thanks for watching.
Great idea!

Good to hear someone does that. I’m fed up of buying boxes but using less than half as I’m only doing my roots. I’d considered only mixing half but wasn’t so sure it was a thing others did. Feel much better now, thanks 😊
@@sarahgaskell6538 Hi, I hope you give it a go, half mix goes a long way and same results. Good luck 🤞🏻
This makes me so happy lol. My mother was a hairdresser for years, but she uses garnier on her own hair!
Have you ever seen the Madison reed “home colourants”? They’re a little on the pricier side, but are supposed to be “salon quality”
Thanks for watching, how cool your mother was a hairdresser! I have, I think that’s marketing…and as we know, there’s not a lot of difference.

Interesting and useful, thank you. Just getting a few greys but don’t want to go to a salon after too many colours that weren’t what I asked for in the past. 😂 this has helped me decide to give it a try on my own ❤

I have had amazing experiences with hairdressers and home dyes.
Love how thorough and helpful and so mindful of us that have had horrible hair salon experiences I cut and Dye my own hair now and don't budge. ❤ No shade to lovely hairstylist that truly are able to take the time and care it takes to care for another humans hair as if it were their own.
Of course, I truly believe EVERYONE should have the best hair they can. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
So glad you’ve found what works for you. Thanks for sharing.
Hi there, thanks for watching and sharing your insight. I agree on the peroxide front…and here’s to testing and experimenting! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Sally's stores are few and far between in the UK for some reason. Its not that easy for us to get professional hair dyes, but box dyes are everywhere.
Wahoo, we have Sally’s over here in the UK too and yes, Boots and Wallgreens are the same brand.
This is so refreshing to hear a professional hairdresser not diss on any at-home treatments. I used to go to a salon for my roots touch up, but with the recent surge in prices I just unfortunately can't afford it as a student anymore. :( So, thank you for this, Craig! ❤️
Perhaps a quick question on at home dyes, specifically on Manic Panic's Hot Hot Pink..
I have a video here on my channel that answers your question - ua-cam.com/video/ShqJ5H84460/v-deo.htmlsi=Ln0DaVpMcQ8FpVbt
I do go over my preferred process in a few other videos too - of course there are many factors in removing colour but I hope the videos help.
@@theworldofcraig That's so kind of you to reply, thank you so much! 🤗 I really appreciate it! Cheers from Canada! 🙌
@@keanux Thanks for watching and sharing your insight.
Hi there, thanks for watching and sharing your hair “journey”, glad you’re getting great results. Go YOU!

@@GailCooper-u8yThanks for watching. I’m afraid I don’t know, the info would be on individual home colour sites.

I used a lot of home hair color on family members and friends as an apprentice as I just didn’t want to spend money on professional products and despite them being a bit runny or sometimes smelling more funky the outcome was always phenomenal 😂
professional powdered bleach however I always preferred because it’s not as liquid and much more predictable than over the counter and way less expensive 🤑
Hi there, thanks for watching. That’s a great idea to get the techniques down.

Well, I’m chuffed I could help, thanks for watching. And here’s to that! 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
Wahoo, sounds like you’ve got it covered. Marvellous. Thanks for watching.
Really glad you’ve found a solution to having great hair!
I’m glad you’ve found what works for you…thanks for sharing your hair journey and for watching. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨

I started box dyeing my hair during the pandemic, after going to a salon for years for highlights. 😆

I’ve been doing my roots for almost 20 years using BOX hair color. Once or twice a year, I get high and low lights professionally put in.
Hi there, I have clients that do exactly the same…glad you’ve found a solution. Thanks for watching.
I cut my own hair and i box dye. Screw the bad hair cuts ive always had and i cant afford someone else colouring my hair.
Good for you! Thanks for watching.
