    Possibly the question I get the most in the comments on here (and in my DM's on other platforms!) is how to remove "brassy" warmth from hair using hair colour successfully.
    Seeing as my other hair toning share videos have been enjoyed by a lot of you, hair professionals and box dye users alike, it made sense to answer the question on here and then it'll be here for eternity to refer to!
    Of course, there are a few important principles when wanting to neutralise warm tones in the hair but I've made sure to include them all, so you can get great results every time and have the BEST hair.
    So whether you sometimes struggle giving your clients a cool tonned hair color result or you do your own roots at home but they always seem warmer than the rest of your hair, this is for YOU.
    And even though I take you through a result using @redken Shades EQ Gloss in the video, the same principles and theory apply to ALL hair colour brands/lines, so don't worry if you use something else...or something from the drug store.
    Please do let me know if you find it helpful and as always, you leave a comment or a hair related question and I'll get back to you.

      Had this week exact Chat with clients who's color is a 4n and she wanted some h/l . After she saw some warm h/ls before toning ,her freak out was beyond. Toned on the level, looked lovely but she still felt she saw some warmth. Was about to shoot myself since I've explained this over and over again. Now I'm going to send your video to her and maybe she'll get it. TY

    Very informative! I watched another video that you can tone and brighten your color with hi-lift ash dye but with only 20vol developer. What's your opinion on this? Do you find it damaging?

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  2 місяці тому

      Thank you…and thanks for watching. I would never tone with anything (very occasionally tint and pastel developer) other than demi permanent, I just don’t want or need (if you’ve lifted light enough) that level of deposit…and yes, I don’t use high lift at all, so much ammonia.

  • @JK-wn7tc

    Hi Craig, thank you so much for this video, I rewatched it and there were new insights I learnt as I put a same level toner on my level 7 highlights which had a 7GI on them with a 7n to try to counter the yellow and processed for 20 mins. It turned dark to my surprise. So now i realize i should have included a 7VB with the 7N but if I want a bit of lightness should there also be a 7GI? I’m trying to get more ash than yellow/orange….thanks in advance for your thoughts!

    • @theworldofcraig

      Hi there, you’re welcome, thanks for watching.
      I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking - I can’t give specific formulas remotely, it’s impossible without seeing the hair in person.
      GI is a warm + iridescent series, so it won’t neutralise gold. A formula with just N might be a good place to start.

    • @JK-wn7tc
      @JK-wn7tc Місяць тому

      Thanks, Craig yes of course it’s hard for you remotely. I guess what I meant was when you said, the cooler will be darker than the warmer and that may be there could be a bit of those if a person or adding a VB and then as you suggest to make a cooler, would there be another tone that could be still be added to give some lightness? Thanks

  • @theviewfromher5085

    QUESTION, with a very long intro. I have dark brown hair (I would say a level 2) and lightened it with Blondme 7 vol and Blondme clay lightener to a mixture of level 5 to 7, I think. Yes, it took me hours upon hours, mostly because I tried a w pattern balayage first (hence the clay lightener), then a weaving balayage, and finally I did an ombre, because, let's be fair, this is nearly impossible to DIY on waist length, layered hair.
    I would like to get my hair to a cool toned brown, I think it was called mushroom brown a couple of years back when it was 'on trend'. I'm not sure what shade of toner I should use, as it looks like it might have some kind of warmth to it, even though it is a cool toned brown. Should I stay away from anything ash/green based? Or, would a splash of something like Shades EQ VRO be a good addition to an ash toner?

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  2 місяці тому +2

      Thanks for watching!
      I would say that a “mushroom” shade is cool (all colour is incredibly subjective) - so perhaps start with something simple, such as 7N on its own - you could add a little 7NA…all suggested without seeing your hair.
      And well done for the home balayage! 👨🏻🙏🏻🧡

  • @shannenfarrah4032

    I really hope you see this... I have a question about "the cooler the formula the darker it will be the warmer the formula the brighter it will look" my question is if your trying to get from platinum blonde to that icy white silver color... What is the best way to go? Can you tone it to that color or do you dye it that color?

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  Місяць тому

      In my opinion, (all colour is subjective and it why it makes it tricky for me to answer specific formula questions) platinum and “icy” are pretty much the same shades…
      I would always use a demi permanent toner to create those results. There are many, many videos here on my channel that contain info on both.

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  14 днів тому +1

      I would never tone with a higher volume of peroxide - I only ever use a demi permanent and they (generally) have their own developers that are lower in volume.
      Also - a higher volume will take the pigment further into the hair…which could make it appear darker…

  • @michelleharrison9458

    do you know the recommended ratios for Colour Touch Special mix please - would it be the rule of 11 like the KP s.mixes or are the CT s.mixes weaker. I found this online and I wondered if it was accurate -
    Boost: Intensify and shade Eg. 20g COLOR TOUCH shade + 10g 0/56 + 60g 1.9%/4%
    Correct: Neutralize unwanted warmth 40g COLOR TOUCH shade + 5g 0/68 + 90g 1.9%/4%

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  Місяць тому

      If that’s from the Wella/Color Touch user guide online, that’s the guideline. I don’t use the special mixes much as I find CT to be warm/cool enough on its own as it’s quite opaque.

  • @michelleharrison9458
    @michelleharrison9458 2 місяці тому

    In Wella, which has more or a neutralising effect on yellow tones - a 9/16 or a 9/96.
    9/96 appears more violet but 9/16 appears to be more pigmented

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  2 місяці тому

      That would be 9/96 - although it does have some blue in it - one of the reasons I don’t use a lot of Color Touch to tone, there’s no pure violet tone. 9/16 is ash/violet…not the best on gold. You can find the Wella pigment chart online.

    Hey Craig👋🏻 if I, as a natural level 6/7 light brown who wants to be level 8 blonde, use a permanent colour no 8 with blue/violet undertones (+vol 20) would that counteract the orange tones or be a hot mess? 😅

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  14 днів тому

      Hi there, thanks for watching.
      So you’ve got the principle, only it’s a little different when you’re lifting hair - you need to think of the warmth in your hair at the natural level - 6/7…which would be a deeper orange.
      Therefore (this is all without seeing your hair, so you’ll have to make that final call) you need more blue (which brands have) to get a more neutral result - remembering that blue is a very powerful pigment, so it might not look quite as light as an 8 when dry…cool tones absorb light.
      Good luck, let me know how you get on. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨

    Love your swatch tests! I My layman curiosity was wondering why you didn't test with close as possible tones. Like 8n+8vb was used, but just 10n was used with no 10v or 10t or 10p to help simulate the VB aspect of the level 8 tone. Maybe it's irrelevant? It would be interesting to see that closer (?) comparison! ... Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge and in such a clear fun way!

      Hi Christa. I chose the have the “on the level” formula be cooler as I have another video on here (just swatching, less in depth share) where they are the same tone just deeper.
      When I plan out content I always, always have both hair pro’s and consumers in mind, by showing the cooler formula as the “on the level” one hopefully it’ll help hair pro’s who really find it a challenge, (I know it has already which is great!) whilst the more general selection info is for everyone. Thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻✨

      That’s a BIG question and I can’t give out specific, individual formulas without knowing more/seeing your hair, there’s so much to it.
      There are many other toning videos here on my channel - a couple deal with orange warmth…and there are a few with warm formulas in too.

    What if you have highlights - do you tone to that level?

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  Місяць тому +1

      It depends on whether you want to cancel all the warmth but yes if that’s the case.

    Oh I just love you!
    Here’s a conundrum 😂. I’m naturally strawberry blonde (yellow). I mix box dye 2/3rds light auburn (clariol 6R) with 1/3rd light ASH blonde (clairol 9A) and I get quite a nice result. Auburn red, but toned down. But salons tell me I shouldn’t be mixing red with ash, as they cancel each other out. But I think that’s what I’m trying to do (??🤔). Red on its own is too screaming for me. Is there another way? Am I going at this from the wrong angle?
    Adoring hug 🤗 xx

      Awww, thank you, that’s very kind…and lovely.
      No no, you’re doing exactly what you should be - different tones in one bowl don’t “cancel each other out”, think of it as a matter balance…and the KEY is that you get a great result. GO YOU!
      You are doing exactly what you should be. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨

    Biggest, take away I don't know there are many! I have been watching your videos non-stop as I'm trying to save money at the salon. I did a bleach wash on my hair with a fairly mild bleach cream and I have orange....and I want to tone it and have some warmth, but I'm concerned about my Gray roots. Should I use a different developer on those or a different toner altogether?
    Ideally I would like the silver in my grays to shine through the gold and give it dimension

      Awww, so glad it was helpful, thanks for watching.
      Yes, you would need to treat the “zones” differently - the roots with something to add depth…and the “orange” mids/ends to tone.
      I’ll be honest, it’s a very tricky thing to get a good result from yourself as it’s so nuanced.

    So to clarify, if I want to keep some warmth in my hair, I should tone above the level of my hair?

      @@theworldofcraig ok cool thank you!! Also one last question, I just got my highlights retouched and those new highlights at the top of my head are ashy. But the bottom of my hair is golden. I want to have a cohesive golden look. So I get a gloss to try to add warm to the top of my head? Thank you so much for your time!

    I can't find your email....I believe I am naturally a level 5 and level 4 is too dark, often washing me out. I’ve heard you say, find your natural shade then where you want to go (I’d like to go consistently a level 5). So my thoughts were with all of the red/orange that I shouldn’t have to fill to go one level darker and my thoughts were to mix some 06Nch with a tad of 06GN, divide into sections as you’ve shown in videos, then start in back quadrants first, small sections at a time, carefully covering back and front of each, then do front roots ½” to ¾”? let all of that sit for ______ many mins THEN cover midshafts and ends for remaining time? If this is not a good plan, please direct me to a video to follow (and any recommendations on my color using what I have would be appreciated). here is what I have...06GN EQ Gloss, 05N EQ Gloss, 06Nch Bonder Inside, 0 Clear Bonder EQ Gloss, 05GB Color Gel Lacquer, Pulp Riot 5-5 Perm Color, 8A ChiIONIC Shine Shades Liquid Color. I can email you pics but can't find an email.

      Hi Emma, thanks for watching.
      Please don’t send pics - it’s impossible for me to give out custom personalised formulas remotely and photos aren’t a good representation of hair “in person”.
      I’m not sure what question you’re asking - what I will say is that Shades EQ Gloss is a lot collier than people generally think, so perhaps go in with an N on its own first.

    Let's say you have those same swatches with that starting color (a strawberry blonde is what it looks like to me) how would you tone that to appear brown without canceling out all the warmth? Say you don't want cool at all but a nice warm brown.

      There is another video here on my channel about picking the perfect toner formula, it’s a recent video, that should help.

      @theworldofcraig Based on this video, my guess for a first test would be 8N for keeping the warmth of the strawberry blonde but getting to brown, maybe 7N. Do you think that's a good guess?
      (I've already watched your other video, btw)
      I want a starting point for testing on strawberry blonde for a brown color but keeping the warmth.

      I’m not sure what you mean by “fill”?
      If I’m colouring grey hair I would use permanent colour or a cream based demi permanent like Color Touch…unless someone wants a very translucent result, then I might use Shades EQ Gloss - there are many videos that go over the different options here on my channel.
