“Box dye” 2.0 is here, thanks for watching! It would be GREAT to hear if it was helpful and please share it with your friends and colleagues. Thank you. 👨🏼📦🙌🏻
This is a really good video for the home hair colourers! . Its honestly invaluable to know this stuff if you are colouring your own hair.
I colour my own hair but I use Igora by Schwarzkopf ☺️ swear by it.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it!
Igora is a great line. Thanks for watching. 👨🏼📦🙌🏻
How much confidence can I put into "bond enforcing" claims? Edit to say thank you for the video. It's nice to have you acknowledge that salon visits aren't in everyone's budget, but we still like to have fun with color and look our best!
That’s a great question, thanks for watching. I’m afraid very little in a home hair colour. I would suggest a stand alone product like K18 - the peptide is patented so the clinical date backs it up properly. The same with Olaplex…although I choose K18 over that.
I'm here because of your short ❤
Wahoo! 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
Thanks Craig 💖. Lots of helpful observations and info to remember. Always so much fun watching your videos. 🫶🏼👏🏼👌🏼💖🙏🏼
Awww, thanks Ashley, so glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and for your kindness. 👨🏼🙌🏻✨
Hi Craig, I love your videos they're always so informative. I had light blonde hair until my mid thirties when it started to lose colour. I used nice and easy light baby blonde until about 10 years ago when I decided it was too light for me and I changed to light ash blonde. I thought about growing it out but my natural colour is now a sort of mousy colour and also my daughter won't let me! ❤
Hi Cindy, that’s great, so glad you’re enjoying them…thanks for watching and for your kind words.
Sounds like you have a good thing going on, thanks for sharing your insight and hair colour journey. 👨🏼📦✨
Thanks for the nutrisse advice I just started to buy one of their brown shades thinking it was great but now I know about the possible ammonia content and probable high peroxide I think I'll still use it but not every 6 weeks .I will alternate with L'Oréal box dye.I often use my own peroxide 10 vol Schwarzkopf and therefore, they are modified and become a toner.Hope I have understood what I'm doing lol😊
I don’t remember saying anything in a video about Nutrise/ammonia…? I have mentioned that even ammonia free hair colour has potentially damaging chemicals…ammonia isn’t bad at all…neither is peroxide to a point - and again, I’ve never said a colour for home use had high peroxide volumes in it..?
I wouldn’t advise mixing home colour with anything other than is in the box - perhaps look for a specific toner…doing that could make the results very unpredictable.
Thanks for watching. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of hair care. Boots is fun!
You’re most welcome, thanks for watching.
Oh, we love Boots!
I would love to see you test the two box dyes at the end. Let's test the truth in marketing 😅
I’m pretty sure the results wouldn’t be that great. Thanks for watching. 👨🏼🙏🏻📦
Craig you are right about loreal les blondissemes i use hi lift ulta lite natural blonde. I used to be a 5 in my twenties or darker. Used highlights about 20 yrs but since transitioning to hair color my hair initially turns out brilliant but in 4 washes my hair has mucho brass. I am fearful to use ash as i heard of the green hair effect. So i put up with the brass and trim more often. No home hair dye is perfect. I am kinda lazy to highlight it plus being older u have to be careful home highlithing. Great video
It is a great formula but the natural staring point always plays a huge part in the result.
Afraid I don’t know the tones of that line enough to be able to recommend the ash shades - if they do a “natural ash”, that could be an option..?
The key to good home hair colour is application over everything else.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks Craig I'm just a warm completion kind of used to it cheers
Yes to testing the Schwarzkopf metallics!!
I’ve added them to my list! Thanks for watching.
I am new to your channel! I’d love to see you test swatches of the schwarzkopf hair dye! I’m really intrigued
Thanks for watching. That might just happen at some point…although the request list is rather long.
Love all your videos! I’m a natural strawberry mousey blonde (level 6/7) and currently do my own foils at home and whack on a demi permanent color when I need a root melt/ correct my highlights, since I’m not a profesh, I think because I’m reddish it does lift a bit warm sometimes. Im also not a fan of the super ash blonde look- trying to get a more creamy blonde.
I’m curious about using a toner that both lifts and deposits colour- have never tried it but heard it can be less damaging. Foils on myself are so time consuming! But not ready to let the blonde go 😅
Thank you, it’s great to have you following along!
Sounds like you’re a dreamt natural colour, wahoooo.
I would stay away from lifting and toning at the same time for a few reasons - all of which I get into in a recent video here on my channel - “Why I don’t tome with permanent hair colour”.
@@theworldofcraig thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I will be binge watching all of your videos as I’m in need of a root touch up very soon!
@HG-rr1yf Of course! Awww, thank you, appreciate your support and glad I can help. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
hello Craig! thank you so very much for covering more drugstore and do it yourself hair products ❤
was curious to get your insight. i bleached my roots at home yesterday, as i do every 6-8 weeks or so, before putting pink direct dye in.
i know bleach is an aggressive chemical process and scalp pain and irritation is normal, but it hurt insanely yesterday and i was wondering if there are any ways to reduce that 😅 i used some italian bleach powder and 20 vol clear cream developer. still bleached well, but i had to wash it out before the usual time i leave bleach in. should i perhaps use a lower developer vol next time?
thank you!!
my mom also loves loreal and revlon permanent box dyes. the colour on the box is usually misleading, but box dye can still come out looking lovely.
You’re welcome, thanks for watching.
Hmmm, really hard for me to say as you’re not my client - I would suggest a more diluted ratio rather than a lower volume perhaps…? Lots about that here on my channel.
Home colours or “box dyes” aren’t misleading - it’s just as I mention in the video, the starting level simply plays a huge part in the result.
Go YOU with your pink hair! 👨🏼🙏🏻🌸
a more diluted ratio makes sooooo much sense! i think i did use too much developer. thank you!
This was thoroughly enjoyable, thank you Craig 😊. Every time I've permanently coloured my roots a brown colour, the little bits of lift give me orange brass as the actual colour fades, it's very frustrating 😢. I'm trying to switch to demi and fingers crossed I can break the brassy cycle 😂
Hi Claudia, so glad you enjoyed it.
You’re totally on the right track - it’s the lift that exposes “warmth”, so that could be the way to go.
Thanks for watching. 👨🏼📦✨
@@theworldofcraigyou're very kind to help out, and again thank you for your excellent information 👏👏👏

7:32 to me the hair pictured on the box is dark brown 😂 and being so ashy the end result will look almost black at first to me
Cooler shades always look darker - but all colour is subjective eh. Thanks for watching.
Love your tips. Craig is it possible to bring a level 5 to a level 7-8 without having to bleach it first? I tried that in the past and it goes always orange. I used the L’Oréal 6U and it became red/orange with great grey coverage. I was not happy, too warm, I want a cool shade, maybe beige but definitely cool. A few months later I tried 7.11 anti-brass but it became orange, less orange than de 6U. My hair becomes much darker and warmer than what is on the box. Long intro but now my question, I want a medium ash blond, the colour on the box of the L’Oréal 7.11. Is it possible to do it without having to pre-bleach? Should I use another brand. Does a high lift work? Which one? Thanks for your time and expertise.
Thank you, glad you’re enjoying my content and it’s helpful.
So I’m afraid it’s tricky - you want to be a cool ash blonde and that’s not really possible with tint…it’s a matter of accepting what result you can get with it or go down the route of bleaching. Perhaps partial highlights after timing would suffice…?
The coolest result you’re going to get is from the Loreal “anti brass” line.
Thanks for watching. 👨🏼🙌🏻✨
I found no matter what I did my hair pulled alot of orange. I've used 40vol developers, and even paid out to a salon to bleach highlights and it still came out with alot of brassiness and orange. Used blue and violet based toners. ash color also tend to go darker so maybe that's why yours came out darker than you wanted. I figured I would have to really bleach my hair to a 9-10 and then dye it back to where it would be too much damage and upkeep. since my hair really wants to be on the orange/gold side I just go with it now and go with gold/copper/red dyes.
@@kite6864Thanks for sharing your insight and for watching. 👨🏼📦🙌🏻
The L'Oreal universal and ultra ash are both awful - my roots orange as in actual orange and the rest of my hair was one shade darker not to mention my scalp on fire.
So I guess you're kinda like me and I like Schwarzkopf or syoss never had an issue with them. They stay true to their name or number.
@@justmeiam4996It’s really always about the starting level of your natural colour as to how warm the result is - lifting hair at home almost always exposes warmth.
Glad you’ve found what works for you, thanks for watching.
Greetings from Greece! I love your videos and your accent! You are so informative! Can you make a video about the damaging effects between ethanolamine vs ammonia. I'm asking because I used to dye my hair with ammonia free hair dye but it ruined my hair, espacilly my curl pattern, much more than traditional ammonia hai dye...What's your opinion on this? Is it just marketing? Thanks in advance!
Hello from London. Awww, thanks for watching and for your kind words.
I’m not sure that I’d make a videos comparing the two but I will add it to my list.
I’ve never been a fan on MEA personally (I have tested/used it) - it is still a very powerful chemical, it has to be to do what it does and I’ve always been a fan of ammonia based hair colour.
Marketing definitely has a lot to do with it - a lot of the pro brands have discontinued their MEA lines. 👨🏼🙏🏻📦
Very informative video. Are you familiar with IGK haircolor? I'm thinking about trying it. I've been getting my hair done in a salon for about two years but it's just too expensive
Thanks, glad you found it helpful. I know of it - I’m not sure who manufactures it for them but I would suggest using a brand with all the R&D behind them like Loreal or Clairol…not everyone’s favourite brands but they have brilliant formulas that are very similar to pro lines (I know this because I do some work with a few BIG colour houses)
Hi Craig thanks so much for the great video 🎊 I am about to embark on a box dye for the first time ever! I’ve got resistant grey, so keeping up with salon appointments is really expensive!
After this video I Went straight onto the boots site ….. but oh dear the reviews are not great. So I’m now super scared! 😱
Hi Lana, you’re most welcome, thanks for watching.
I totally understand - I have clients that are doing just that.
There is some room for human error, so that could be why the reviews aren’t so good - home colour can have a lot of emotion attached.
There are a few videos in the “box dye” playlist that will help with application etc.
let me know how you get on. 👨🏼📦✨
@@theworldofcraig Hi Craig well I finally took the plunge! I used L’Oréal excellence crème in mahogany ….. firstly the colour is a bit orangutan! Secondly it only covered 70% of my grey. I took you advise and shook the two products together gently, but they came out separated and curdled, no matter how much I shook the bottle they did not mix properly, I ended up mixing it on my hand ( glove) before putting it on my hair. Only upside is my hair is now shiny ✨
@lanawontner5702 Hi Lara, sorry to hear you didn’t get what you expected - if you have more than 30% grey, I perhaps wouldn’t have gone for such a strong tone…not that mahogany is “strong” but on the grey it becomes more vibrant. You see, that’s the thing, I can’t give advice remotely, there’s just too much too it.
If you do it again I would stick to “natural” or “golden brown”. Shiny is always good!
Hi can you use a a color remover first before a box dye to get the box dye shade and what is a good color remover that is less damaging
Hi. You sure can…not exactly sure what you mean regarding “to get the box dye shade”?
All colour removers will do some damage to the hair, as a hair pro I like to use a bleach mix but there’s a lot to what ratio/peroxide I’d use etc.
Love the video ! I have a long coloring path but I would love to have your opinion. Last year I got my black hair ( salon colored grey coverage ) to a chocolate brown but somehow the bleaching was bad so first session it had still black parts , second session it went back to my old color because idk why because I left crying they offered me to fix it and the color I wanted was brown and I turned to a redhead . I redone it to cooper . Since January I was trying to get rid of the red but salons somehow managed to do it reddish again . I started coloring on my one and I mostly got rid of the red .I am using 6.11 ,7.11 L’Oréal excellence . Any suggestion what else I can use . I want to go chocolate brown but when I apply that color on my hair it just turns red . Sorry for the long comment 🙏🏻
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
That’s a tricky one to answer remotely I’m afraid - every time you lift the hair it exposes warmth, the formula you’re using is good for the result you want but if your natural hair is warm you will almost always get a warm result.
I usually color my own hair, I have had somewhat bad luck at the salon, plus I have redo my roots often. My hair is naturally a dark blonde, and it tends to pull warm. I use an ash color, but it still pulls warm. I haven't tried a double ash...because I have some concerns about it pulling green. Is this something I need to actually be concerned with? I also wouldn't want it to be so ashy that it looks flat either, just a bit less warmth would be nice because I am cool toned, and I don't think added warmth matches my skin tone.
Thanks for watching and sharing your insight.
Hard for me to say remotely but the double ash could potentially be a lot flatter…and therefore look much darker.
@@theworldofcraig ok thank you! I appreciate the reply ...and confirming it might look flat, and even darker. I enjoy your channel, new sub!
Would the Loreal Preference Blonding work as a toner?
Technically yes, but if you’re toning you don’t really need to use so much “energy” - I would suggest a demi permanent colour.
Has anyone used Garnier Good? I'm intrigued to try it but wondered what people thought x
👨🏼🛍️✨
Thank you, great video. I used to use these on a lady with thick below shoulder length hair, a copper colour, I only did the roots (as the ends were coloured) but found 1 box was not enough even for the roots. I then found it hard to match up. As her roots got grayer, it never seemed to cover and had a root glow and if I combed it through to even out, the mid length and ends just got darker.
I usually use Koleston but find on golden blondes when Im doing the roots (grey/white natural roots) Im always having to colour touch mid lengths/ends to stop the obvious line of root colour and the old growth (overlap, if you know what I mean). Do you do any videos on root touch up and overlaping old colour?
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, very valuable, love your videos and yes to the testing of the vibrant colours. 👍😁
And thanks to you for watching and your kind words.
1 box isn’t ever going it be enough on thicker hair for sure - I do go through that in another video in that playlist.
You really do always have to refresh mids/ends when adding colour to the roots, the placement of pigment means you’ll get a band otherwise.
I’m afraid I don’t have many permanent colour/root videos - there isn’t much call for them generally. I do have many, many toning/hair colour theory videos though.
The vibrant colours are on my (very long) list. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
@@theworldofcraig Back in the 90s I never seemed to have a problem with banding, I could do the roots and it all seemed to match, probably because there wasn't such a range of colours, it was just blonde, brown red, or maybe not so much pigment in them. Thank you, I'll enjoy watching my way through your videos, I've only recently come across you. Wish I'd have had your knowledge years ago! 😊
@@neatanita2861 That could be partly to do with it, people want more coverage now so oxidative hair colour is often more opaque.
Awww, it’s great to have you following along and I’m so grateful for your support and kindness. 👨🏼🙏🏻✅
Hi Craig - just wondering Can you beef up the power of a box dye a bit by adding a stronger developer? I’ve heard most box dyes come with 10% hydrogen peroxide that you add into the dye mix. What would happen if you upped this to an equal amount of 20 or even 30% vol hydrogen peroxide? Would it give more lift? Thank you! Love the videos! ❤
Hi Robbie, thanks for watching and I’m thrilled you’re enjoying my content!
That might be one of those hair colour myths - the demi’s would have something very similar to what we use in salon…the grey coverage would be 20 volume…and the high-lift 30/40 volume.
They really aren’t very different from pro products - check out my video where I test Natural Instincts, it sums it all up.
I would never suggest mixing them with anything other than what’s in the box - it would make results very unpredictable and cause at worst cause damage to the hair or a nasty reaction.
@@theworldofcraig ❤
100% had my attention loved this Craig007
Wahooo! 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
I've used a colour remover on my hair. I was really dark chocolate now I'd say im a dark red/orange and yellow/orangein parts. I'm a natural mousy blonde/brown. But want to go just a flat brown without brassy hair. I could cry. Can someone help me? Box dye? Toner? Hair salon? What do I do?
You could get to a “flat brown” if it the canvas (that’s what we call the hair ready for recolouring) was an even yellow tone, with minimal orange. As there’s (from what you say, very hard to make a call remotely) red/orange those parts will have to be lifted more….otherwise toning to make those “flat” would mean you’d have to go really dark.
There are many toning videos here on my channel in a playlist.
Hey Craig , you should review L'Oreal Paris ultra platinum L'Oreal claims it lifts 9 levels is it true or just words , thanks Craig you rock much respect to you 👍🙂
Hi Dennis. It most likely does have the “power” to lift - but it would depend on so many factors.
Perhaps my next home colour videos will be blondes…?! Thanks for watching. 👨🏼📦🙌🏻
Hi . I had henna done because I have greys and thought it was healthier. But it's very monotone. Is there anything I can do to get highlights at home
Thank so much.
Hi. As much as I’m an advocate for home colour I don’t think attempting to highlight your own hair is that practical - beyond a few face framing pieces. Henna can be lifted…despite all the myths you see on social platforms. Just do a strand test underneath first.
✌️👽
👨🏼📦✨
Hi , i have brown hair and dis some highlights and it came out orange and yellow. Can i use blond box color to get rid of the bronssy tones. Pls help me
Hi, so I can only be general because I can’t see your hair - I would recommend toning it over lifting it more…there are loads on toning videos here on my channel - if it’s orange yellow it needs blue/violet. Just be aware that will make it darker as well.
U will get sick of me , but now I've put manic panic in hair it's a little TOO BRIGHT , how can I carm it down please Craig 😅
Shampooing it with slightly warmer water will help it fade.
The universal nudes look lovely but I've yet to try them x
They do look great.
Hello Craig, to blend with the premature grey hair. What colour shade would you recommend 🙏🏻
Hi there. That’s a HUGE question - it depends on what colour you are now/what colour you want to be/what sort of coverage/commitment you want…?
@@theworldofcraigthank you for such a swift reply, currently I am on chocolate brown and I just want to go a bit lighter brown to blend with my grey roots. Would you please recommend a brand that I can do at home😊😊😊
@@ag8959I’m afraid I can’t recommend a specific shade remotely but the formulas of the Loreal colours are great - just be aware that if you already have colour on you hair, it can’t be lifted with another colour, it’s a bigger job that would require bleaching….or perhaps a few highlights.
What should i put on bleached hair, i have white blonde but even toners dont reallt do anything to my roots
Sorry, not sure what you’re asking..? You want to lift the roots? If it’s toning I have an entire playlist on it here on my channel…
Thanks for watching.
@theworldofcraig Sorry. I recently bleached my hair, it goes very light really easy but I find when I go to then dye or tone my hair, my roots don't really take and I end up with very white roots while the rest of my hair has taken
I would suggest perhaps using a slightly deeper/darker formula on the root in that case - perhaps test it on the underneath first.
