    I've had quite a few requests to test "box dye" since my shop up video, so here you go!
    And no, the thumbnail is NOT click bait...I was SHOCKED.
    The video is packed with -
    We take a tour around the packaging...
    Are the instructions simple to understand?
    How easy is the ‪@clairolna‬ ‪@ClairolUKI‬ Natural Instincts to use?
    Then there are the results...plus my thoughts as a hair stylist on how to get the BEST from it at home, with application tips.
    And of course, how does it compare, being a box dye, to professional hair color I use on the daily?!
    Not forgetting what might well be SHOCKING to you...?!
    If you've used the line yourself I'd love to get your insight in the comments and if you'd like this to become a series, which hair colour would you like me to test NEXT?

    LOVE the product list 🤯.
    So many hairdressers tell you how awful ‘box dye’ is. And how bad it is for your hair. And here is the proof that it isn’t.
    Many of my clients use home hair colour, I even give them advise on that to used or where they misses a bit etc.

    Also to add to my comment. I love your videos. They’re so unbiased, informative and educational. Which is really helpful. I do my own hair at home and recently switched from drugstore to professional products. I found the exact same thing… they do the job. With semipermanent I found professional products to be stronger. But what amazed me is that professional products are less runny hence more difficult to apply evenly. That’s defo the case with Loreal (a brand I’m weirdly and obsessively loyal to).
    Video idea: colouring your hair extensions. When I was wearing them, they’d always go a lot more ash even when using products with a golden undertone… like 5.3… and required extra toning.

    OMG! I've been coloring my own hair for years with "boxed dye" and as I am 80% grey, I was using a L'Oreal Excellence Permanent. I don't have my stylist do this, as I would be there every 2 weeks, as soon as those white roots start to appear. Then,I discovered Wella Color Charm at the local beauty shop and I fell in love with that product. I went quite dark - a level 5, and over time, I had a lot of build up and I hated the demarcation line I get with the permanent, so I began looking around for a demi. I am unable to purchase the Shades eq here in Canada, but I am able to purchase the Wella Color Touch, so I ordered a few colors to try, along with the emulsion and I absoultely LOVE how it leaves my hair. I went quite light and now I am trying to find that "perfect" shade that suits me best. Since watching your investigation into the ingredients, I admit - I'm shocked! And pleased! I wonder if the the developer is the same as the emulsion? Absolutely LOVE your channel Craig!

    Thank you so much for these videos. I've seen plenty of stylists do comparisons of salon color and none of them compared ingredients besides a few claiming that home color had metallic salts (which is usually in compound dyes and black hennas, not regular box color), but never actually compared the ingredients. The foundational chemicals are the same regardless of whether they are labeled for pros only or for everyday consumers. There's more of a difference between salon relaxers than home kits (since lye performs a bit differently than guanidine hydroxide) than there is between salon and box color.

      You’re most welcome, thank you for watching and for your fantastic insights.
      I’m with you on the “metallic salts” misinformation, it’s always seemed like a reach to me…I get it, some folks feel intimidated by home colour but the “myths” are just silly.
      And yes, I’ve been in more than a few labs on my time in R&D and there really isn’t much difference….often it’s literally just the fragrance.

    I love your videos!! 😍 So easy to follow, informative and they always give me a massive dose of optimism about my hair rather than it being a never ending stress about what I should do next. My holy grail search is for a colour which coats my approx 50% grey hair so that the result is dark but translucent. Whenever I have gone to hairdressers they just look at me in confusion and either offer to COVER or NOT COVER. Looking at your swatches the end colour looked translucent and so I am going to give it a go... 🙏

    Si glad I found you! I got a bad experience at the hair dresser last year and I now want to try the Natural instinct semi permanent dye. I used to bleach my hair (at the hairdresser) to be blonde. I’ve had numerous balayage and my hair was great. When I asked to stop bleaching and move on to a more natural it didn’t come out the way I expected and it cost me the exact same as a balayage on my long hair. It was too expensive.. I decided to let it grow and do some conditioner gloss copper to make it more fun. I am now tired of that and would love to go back to a dark blonde. I am a level 7 but I am very brassy right now (my fault). In your video you said that if you have over 30% grey you would go down a level but you said not if you have porous hair.. I have porous hair.. Just wondering why? Is it because it would come out darker?
    Thank you for everything from Canada !

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  29 днів тому +2

      So glad you found my channel too, thanks for watching. Yes, that’s right it could “grab” and go darker if hair is porous…I would suggest staying on a lighter level to begin with - Natural Instincts won’t lift your hair.

    Hi Craig, I switched to this product about 5 months ago. I was looking for a product that would be kinder to my difficult, curly, medium porosity hair. I've been happy with Clairol semi permament, although one of the darker shades took months to go, which surprised me for a semi. However, I've found a shade that suits me. I really appreciate all the information in the video which re-affirms that I've chosen a good product. I'm so guilty of giving it a vigorous shake, won't be doing that again! And guilty of ignoring timings, big oops!!! Could that be drying my hair a little? Not sure. Perhaps the dryness of my hair is not so much to do with the product but other factors ie. age, fully grey hair, probably genetics too. Anyway, I shall continue to use this product. ☺Thanks so much, Michèle

    • @theworldofcraig

      Hi Michèle, it is a great formulation.
      Deeper levels will be more pigmented - and no hair colour has a processing time “cut off”…leave it on longer and it will get deeper/darker, last longer for sure.
      Your hair is most likely not dry at all - it’s probably just lovely textured hair that needs looking after and plenty of product.

      If there’s some grey and you’re using a “warm” toned permanent colour it sure could do…or if you’re leaving it on longer, there are many factors.
      Demi’s deposit, there’s no lift, so you wouldn’t get hot roots…but if there is grey, you might not get coverage. *Not suggesting you have grey, there just a lot to it.

    Whenever I've used natural instincts it always lasts forever. I waited and waited and waited for it to wash out. I finally resorted to color oops and then bleach. And now I have yellow and orange hair. With blue black dye just a touch, for just about 2 minutes, and see if that doesn't calm my hair down a little bit. Since it is naturally a light gray at this point it should blend quite nicely I hope. PS my natural color is very dark brown which lingers in the very back bottom fringe.

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  Місяць тому +1

      Natural Instincts is a demi permanent - it’s oxidative, so does have enough of a chemical reaction to really last…I know it’s marketed as a “semi” but it’s more long lasting.
      Sounds like you’ve got it all under control, good luck and thanks for watching.

    Its the only fault with these kits. You cant do a patch test with the colour because you have to throw it after a short time and a patch test takes 24 hours. Should have a small sample like size of a mcdonalds salt sachet with each box.

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  2 місяці тому +2

      You could very carefully measure out 1gram of each (or use a 1/4 of a teaspoon measure) to do a patch test, then seal up tightly. If you’re then planning on doing the colour 24-48 hours later that would be fine.

    The thing about it is just not one uses several that's when you get the buildup of color because people do not know how to apply color and how to do a retouch or a virgin retouch and then the other issue is it takes a half a bottle of shampoo and conditioner to ever really show how bad it can do your hair in!!!

    I’m curious. Why do most of these home box dyes say it will last 6 to 8 weeks. I’m lucky if I could get 3 to 3 1/2 weeks before the gray hairs are showing everywhere along my roots. And I do not wash my hair other than like once a week so they cannot blame it on frequent washing.
    Just curious why it doesn’t last longer. And I use L’Oréal Preferance.

    • @theworldofcraig

      They use 6 to 8 weeks as a guide but everyone’s hair grows at different rates - also, the product in this video is demi permanent, meaning it doesn’t cover grey as such but blend it, so there isn’t a harsh grow out line (generally, every head is different)
      I’ve recently posted a video on the new Redken Acidic Color Gloss line, that has a clear gloss that can be done at home.

I would love to see you test the L'oreal Magic Retouch Permanent - from my experience, I have found it to be less damaging on hair and the colour last significantly longer than e.g. the Clairol root touch up - its also got a built in brush applicator that i feel helps the dye properly penetrate grey at the side and roots. I love a saloon colour - esp for highlights, but do you home hair colour in between visits, dependent on budget

      After watching your wonderful video my question to you is: how damaging would you say this colour is to hair?
      I don’t have gray to cover, but love to deepen my natural hair tone and use this because it is the most gentle I have found. I don’t want to damage my natural hair, as I do enjoy going back to my True Tone from time to time. I’ve tried many glosses but most don’t “adhere” much to my natural hair. I love love the Kristin Ess glosses but can’t find them since I moved to the UK, so I thought semi/demi permanent would be the next best thing.

    This stuff covers gray on me whereas permanent color washes out in two weeks. I use this about 3-4 times a year because the color matches my real color and fades out so slowly. I vary between light blonde and medium cool blonde, but may try medium golden blonde next time.
    Gently shake. I didn't know that. I have a fear of it not mixing well so I over shake.
    Heresy incoming: Oooh, also I leave it on for an hour! It turns out dark of course, but lasts forever. So after I color my hair is brown (even though I started blonde and added blonde), but I enjoy the way it fades and gets lighter over time. I know it's time to dye again when it's solid blonde and gray again. I just dyed it yesterday, first time since March.

      Yes, leaving it on longer will make it deeper/darker - no hair colour stops working…this would be a problem if someone wanted less of a demarcation line.
