Hi everyone, Durham Nash here! Needless to say we were all immensely nervous, and some answers reflected that - Lisbon on my end!! I think on another set of questions we may have been more lucky, but that’s the name of the game! Oriel were a great team and I hope they go far. 165 will hopefully be enough to see us have another go - only time will tell!
I saw a video on a bombing run made from the mainland US to Afghanistan in 2001. One of the most important stops was in Diego Garcia and I wondered "how the fuck did the US get a military base there?" The answer is, as always, by fucking over whoever was living there in the first place.
That was nice and speedy in comparison to the last two weeks I think - Durham will be left to rue over those three penalties as their 18/27 on the bonuses was as good percentage-wise as Oriel's 20/30 (the latter crucially had no interruptions at all). But 165 is almost certainly enough for a second chance - St Catherine's Cam is now out. This series continues to churn out good quality - long may it continue. Probably the most frantic that Roger Tilling has been since Open vs UCL ;).
This week we see a big shake up in the standings! Highest scoring runners up so far: 1. UCL-175 2. Durham-165 3/4. Liverpool-125 3/4. UEA-125 Eliminated: Gonville & Caius-Cambridge-80, Manchester-75, Reading-100, Birkbeck-London-110, St. Catharine’s-Cambridge-120 (Falls out of 4th place this week) Lowest scoring winner: Wadham-Oxford-180 Highest scoring winner: Bristol-325 NOTE: Since it's starting to look like a tie for 4th place is a real possibility, the rule in past series has been that the team that reached their score in the fastest time advances to the repechage round. Comment: I'm going to miss St. Catharine's-Cambridge. It was lovely to see some representation for the trans community, even if it did bring out the ignorant transphobic trolls on what is supposed to be a show about knowledge. Still, good to see us answering a starter for ten.
Yes -- that was the sort of contest that keeps me watching University Challenge -- well rounded students with wide knowledge outside their own fields. Gives me some hope.
I think this was the best match so far.... As always, someone, somewhere is always shouting an answer... here: ANTENNAE!!!! (I was getting crazy for two reasons, one... it was an answer I have to memorize hundred of times in my first year in university (Veterinary) and it's almost the only thing I know about insects that don't goes with killing them xD, and 2... SENSORY ORGAN!!!, not SPECIES!!!, reading "Butterfly" was exasperating going "against the clock". xD
Two excellent teams. I wouldn’t rule either out of reaching the final (or the semis for sure). Great all-round knowledge from all members and good discussion on the bonuses. Kilburn was guilty of not nominating twice and instead pronounced the answers incorrectly losing out on ten points. Not damaging tonight but it could make a huge difference in later rounds. The only small critique in an otherwise great battle.
I really enjoyed this one, I really enjoyed this one, I haven't seen a come back like this in long time. Who ease was rooting for them when they started to make the comeback
Brilliant game, one of the best I've seen from any season. Liked both teams, and either could've won. I got 4 right - being from Wiltshire helped with the Dickens!
Best match so far this season. That there are young people like them in the world gives hope to an oldie like me, but it would give me even more if they knew who R.G.D. Willis was.
Minor? Vicketenstein? She didn't know the name of the philosopher. And the -stein part is actually pronounced -shtein, but that would have been accepted.
"Meanwhile, Agnes had become a young woman of great beauty and charm, drawing the attention of suitors from the first ranks of the Roman aristocracy. But in keeping with the words of Christ and Saint Paul, she had already decided on a life of celibacy for the sake of God's kingdom. To all interested men, she explained that she had already promised herself to a heavenly and unseen spouse."
I appreciate seeing one of the contestants in the comments, but that being the top comment meant the result of the episode was spoiled for me. Could another comment please be pinned?

As I’ve said before, this show is a part of me. However, I’m not nearly as clever as the contestants, and often I’ll go for long periods without knowing a single answer. I’m not bothered, but occasionally a set of questions will come that I can answer immediately, and I feel a little more smarter. Thank you G. F. Handel 🫡😜😄

I mean, you already know the answer to that, so the question is: How much can we insinuate from your comment 😉😄
@@josephkarl2061 I still think it's "heart-breaking" that all these were filmed long ago... ='(
@@ubiergo1978 When you consider the logistics of making a show like this, it’s the only way you can really do it, depressing though that is 🙃
You were fabulous, Mr. Nash!! Wonderful team. All worked together so well. I'm counting on seeing you all again. Can't wait!
Very much enjoyed you and your team!
Interesting timing to show the British Indian Ocean Territory questions episode
the questions essentially told the history of the dispute and why it is unfair to the Chagossians. A nice set of questions.

Roger Tilling was mixing the helium with a triple espresso towards the end!

Thanks for the upload! Go Durham!!! ❤
What a match! It was so incredibly close. Many players knew so much, unlike last week, when it was Whitaker who played almost alone
True! Kept me on the edge of my seat lol

Exciting and rapid scoring towards the end. I got 3 right answers in a row - thanks to English cheeses ! As always. thanks for the upload

Very exciting finish to a close contest. Glad that the losing score is high enough for that team to continue. Thanks CP.

Ty Cosmic for uploading o fast each week.
I think dinging Oriel for a minor mispronunciation of Wittgenstein was a bit harsh.
Minor? Vicketenstein? She didn't know the name of the philosopher. And the -stein part is actually pronounced -shtein, but that would have been accepted.
The Wittgenstein refusal seemed totally unfair in my opinion…
She didn't know the name of the philosopher, so totally fair methinks.
Moral of the story: Nominate your teammates if you yourself don't know what the answer is
Durham will be back I hope.
Thank you! Great game!
