Girlie Show and the Erotica era is so underrated because of the controversy but artistically, creatively, and politically, this was a new peak for Madonna. Coming off the sweetness of True Blue and the maturity of Like a Prayer, Erotica was a middle finger to late 80s right wing conservatism at a time when our community really needed a champion and a voice to stick up for us. This arc of the 70s to 90s within the tour was so brilliant creatively. I can’t watch In This Life to this day without crying. Flash forward to 2023 and she’s still including these themes in her most recent tour. She hasn’t given up on us and she hasn’t forgotten us. Check out the Holiday to Live to Tell part of the Celebration Tour. People are applauding her for her memorial to those we’ve lost to AIDS. It’s so beautifully done.

Every time I see this performance it brings tears to my eyes. She does an amazing job of transmitting her messages. They were having fun, dancing away..having sex with multiple people...and then the AIDS Epidemic hit. Many people died. The world was against us all. Same sex love. Interracial love. Why is it so hard to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. Why is it so hard to LOVE ❤️

Absolutely! I mean, in a year and a half of doing this, that is one of a handful of songs that I actually didn't think was great, or even just good. But that performance was just pure energy and passion and emotion. Impossible to not be moved by it.

@@bridgethegapreactions Whys It So Hard is almost like a Marvin Gaye song. It’s deliberately simple I think. She had many songs she could have included instead but I think she was always thinking in themes and arcs.

Yep❣️ I was waiting for this one, ever since I suggested it for a reaction under your Easy Ride video.
It's truly shocking how devastatingly impactful and timeless this Tour has transpired to be.
People say Blond Ambition is the one - well yeah, it broke the mold and pushed HER over the top, but The Girlie Show is the pinnacle where the talents are fully displayed. It's insane to think one person can at a single point in their career manifest this much ability.
Whenever I wanna "show people" who&what Madonna, The-Performance-Artist, is and what makes her legacy musically and culturally transcendent - I play them this show.
It just shatters all the prejudice and destroys any preconceived notions and narratives.
Everything from the conceptual presentation, to historical references and mind boggling performance briliance of everyone involved is just on another level.
Erotica the album was intentionally too raw & cold in sound design which left some songs lacking but boy did they come alive when performed. Why's It So Hard is just a perfect blend of styles with some of her best lyrics and all it needed was this powerful live vocal to push it over the edge. Still get goosebumps listening to it to this day. That baritone-range homage to Marlene Dietrich done in 3/4 time while she's waltzing... then jumping a couple of octaves to the squicky mockery of I'm Going Bananas? Just to finish it off with the best live version of La Isla Bonita where she wiped the floor with her dancers outperforming every single one of them... Just insane.
It all just came perfectly together and yeah like you said - it's like she was possessed or something lol
    Keep at it, love 💪🥰

The Girlie show showcased Madonna at the height of her artistic prowess, with her influential album "Erotica" debuting at second position on the charts. Despite the lackluster performance of her "Bad Girl" song which failed to break into the top 40, critics prematurely pronounced her career over and done with. However, it is precisely during such challenging times that Madonna tends to deliver her most exceptional and impactful creations.

I remember the Girlie Show, opening night at the old Wembley Stadium. She came out to Erotica and winked at me. By the end of the concert I was walking around in that gap between the stage and the audience, which is a really weird place to be as you can't really see the show from there, but it did make it a lot easier to get out before the crowd did. Wink aside, my best memory was the incredible performance of Rain with Niki and Donna on the turntable. Definitely one to react to (if you haven't already).

This is the greatest live performance, show in the entire pop and rock'n roll history by the queen of pop, rock'n roll herself. Once more again a great, touching reaction as always big brother. I was in The UK two months ago for a visit but couldn't make it to go to her current tour. However, I, actually we did in 2012 when she also visited our city, it was amazing, her son was also on stage he was 12 back then, she is, and has always been great, one of a kind. Hope you are going to her tour in London in December? Hope you will have a great time.

I slept out 3 nights on the streets of Sydney to get my tickets. Well worth it as I was 3 rows dead centre in front of the catwalk.
Best live band she has ever assembled. Strong elements of disco and funk, and especially sly and the family stone during everybody. Great concert.

not saying this to brag, rather to illustrate M's emotional impact. I grew up - almost literally- on Erotica. a gay guy, ex-communist block, M was escapism, inspiration, happiness.. I've just seen her in Paris for two nights, having already seen the show at the O2 three times. I've seen all her tours since Reinvention, but the journey she is taking you on this time around is on a whole new level.
every single night I cried. not once, not twice. (especially when she reacted to what I'd said. on both occasions I died...)
watching your reaction, especially how you commented on 'Why's it so hard' dwelled me up again. thank you-and keep them reactions coming. M is definitely being rediscovered not only by 12-year-olds (which I fekkkin LOVE), but by people who didn't pay that much attention to her 10-20-30 years ago (which I fekkkin LOVE EVEN MORE SO!!)
I don't want to say 'we told you so', but we DID! we told y'all and finally you are paying attention!... 😂
get crackin', people, you've got loads to catch up on 🤗🤗🤗

I had the same reaction to the album version - it feels kind of corny to me, and kind of a nothing song that I always skipped when I first got the album. But this performance of the song is incredible, and one of her best. Her vocals, physicality, and theatricality are amazing and elevate what could feel like a trite, filler album song.
This live version of the song was included on the cd that came with a giant book about the girlie show, in a cd envelope that said “Accept No Imitations. Accept No Limitations” on it. I’m not proud to say that I couldn’t afford the $80 book, so I ripped the cd out of a display one at B Dalton booksellers and stole it. 😂 That book also had a great quote about the show: “It’ll bring a lump to your throat. And your pants.” 😅

This is what I loved most about Madonna. Musically, lyrically, and artistically, she pushed the boundaries. She expressed what she was feeling. She stopped worrying about making hits or #1 songs after The Immaculate Collection yet she continued to reign supreme. Sure, Mariah and Celine came along and took the spotlight but Madonna stayed the course of pushing her artistic expression and maintains the crown of biggest selling female.

This suite of songs/choreography is one of the best of Madonna’s career. Truthfully, it starts with Express Yourself. But you ended it one song too soon. It must include “In This Life” to get the full picture of how she portrayed the sexual revolution, associated judgments, and then the rise of AIDS and how we lost so many people. It is such a powerful, devastating moment. The Girlie Show was peak Madonna and one of my favorite shows.

Sexual decadence & party culture of the 70s undone by conservative politics & AIDS crisis of the 80s. Economic prosperity & playful, Postmodern optimism of the 90s undone by the Columbine shooting, high profile LGBT deaths, & 9/11.
