I loved Madonna when I was a girl! Her clothes her style, all her moves. She was so controversial but “Dress you up” sounds like such a sweet song now 😂
Lol, indeed.
In high school, for a few years: all the girls seemed to either dress up like Madonna, or Pat Benetar.....was SO MUCH FUN!!! ❤❤
it's surprising like a virgin wasn't on the list instead
She ruled the world back in the day 🤘
Madonna’s first two albums had bangers no lie.
I remember back in the day when the song was popular. I cannot recall a single person referring to it as being a bad song. My friends and I all enjoyed the tune. I think you can make anything “bad“ if that’s what you’re setting out to do from the beginning.
I am not one to defend Madonna, but there is NOTHING in this song that should have put it on that list. The whole thing is a metaphor and response to the idea that the guy is known for being well-dressed.
Yes but the lyrics very heavily suggest she’s going to go “all around the world” with him if you get my drift.
Parents were just mad that they weren’t prepared for “Like a Virgin” and figured they’d dogpile on this song before it reached children’s ears.
@@elizabethschubert7803 But there were songs on the radio about things like that for years before this, including country songs. Exile put out "Kiss You All Over" in 1978, for example.
@@backforblood3421 that’s not really my point though. In 1985, a lot of Madonna’s core fanbase was young children and she was massively popular both in sound and image. It was less about the content of the song and more about who the target audience was.
I NEVER read this song as sexual until now. It's ridiculous.
@@captainKbobkeeshan👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I remember when she performed "Like a Virgin" on some music awards show - maybe MTV music awards - and it was quite shocking for the time. She was in a wedding dress, rolling around on the floor and then gyrating her hips while on her knees on the stage. Was watching it with my boyfriend at the time and we were like, "Okay, then!" Of course, everybody was talking about it the next day about how shocking it was. But she really was so popular and rightly so... and as she continued through the years, the songs became more meaningful and more mature, but her songs in the beginning like this one were so much fun. Reminds me how great my young 20 something years were in the 80s! My favorite Madonna songs - "La Isla Bonita", "Live to Tell" "Papa Don't Preach".
Great reaction. Madonna is my fave artist and her 1985 virgin Tour where this video was shot is my fave concert! Thank you!
Queen of Pop ❤️
How is this song or video even considered filthy back in the day?!
Who knows. The 80s was a weird time for music.
It was pretty double standard. Male artists could sing about being with teenage girls... or even actually BE with teenage girls in a few instances but if a female was too racy it was this big appalling controversy.
Think about it though. A little kid singing along to radio saying "all over your body..." and "cover you with velvet kisses" is def salacious. Tame compared to now, but we cant pretend we don' see anything suggestive about this song.
Parent Music Resource Center...so this is how the Parental Advisory sticker was made. Initially, it was to hurt the musicians, but for some, it became a badge of honor after awhile.
ahhh I see. That's why it seems like so many metal bands were taunting the PMRC. Growing up I remember Cds having that label but it was never a big deal.
Yeah a lot of the rock and metal groups were mad at the sticker, but it turned out that just having that warning label on the record sold millions of copies, so it ended up helping.
@@TheAdventuresofTNT Metal and Rap were targeted. But it seems others sometimes got caught in the crosshairs of the pmrc.
UGH....I remember when they started all that mess....all that did, basically, was to get all the teenagers to look FOR the sticker to see what they wanted to buy.....HAHAHAHAHA
@@TheAdventuresofTNT Look up 2livecrew banned in the USA
Favorite Madonna song. You need to look up Dee Snider speaking to congress about the PMRC.Shit is hilarious! He puts Tipper Gore in her place!
This song was never considered filthy. Don't know who made that list. If you wanna see her being more sexual react to "Erotica" or "Justify My Love" music videos, or her performance of "Fever" from the Girlie Show Live Down Under, or "Like a Virgin" from the Blond Ambition Tour.
It's so funny, growing up in the 90s I always thought the 80s were so lame and I was so happy to not have experienced them. Now that I'm older, I wish I could have been there. Whether it's pop, metal, rock, or anything else, there were some BANGERS in the 80s! 🤣
This is one of Madonna's tamest hits. LOL. She was controversial from that 2nd album with the provocative title and lead single "Like a Virgin". That performance at the very first MTV VMAs in 94 shocked the world and made her a star, I think that performance alone is WAYYY more filthy that Dress you up and it made a Worldwide sensation overnight. She of course would push the envelope more as her career progressed. I am lucky enough to have seen her live in 2019 on her opening night of her Madame X Tour, she sat right across from me I could literally reach out and touch her. Thank God she is still with us and still performing and making new music.
*1984 but yes!
My boyfriend loved when i would sing and dance to this song. Recently found him on fb, and he said remember when you would sing dress you up. 😂
Madonna wrote the rule book . Absolutely mesmerising artist
She was soooOOO cute at the time and even Madonna had her little guitar solo, the 80s touch. ;)
Lol
I forgot abt this live performance. Seeing this reminded me that Madonna studied Alvin Ailey's Theater in NY. I would love to see that. Now I have watch a few vids.
I remember Madonna saying she had to “have a little talk” with Tipper Gore about her criticism 😂 I think it was the “ all over your body “ line that seemed too much in 1985. So tame by 2024 standards.
This video and concert was filmed in Madonna's home state, Michigan
Yeah, this could be a church song today. She sounds pretty good for someone singing while doing aerobics.
🤣🤣
Yup! This live her first concert
Madonna had the SWAG back in the Day...with all due respect to Prince and Whitney, Madonna was Michael Jackson's only real Rival.
A+ Pop Song!
Back in the 80's, Madonna pushed the envelope, broke the glass ceiling, etc. and the establishment tightasses couldn't deal with it.
This is a children's lullaby compared to Erotica, Justify My Love, and Where Life Begins.
Never heard the phrase "fun and magical" on 80s music but, yeah, that's perfect.
1984 doesn't get much more "pop" than this song and still, there's pretty awesome guitar solo.
This was probably the tamest of the 15. I think this song made the list just because it's Madonna.
That solo was bad ass wasn't it!!!
Madonna in the 80's was the shit. And I was into metal and hard rock!
Couldn’t deny her sexiness. I think a lot of guys were into her but wouldn’t admit it.
Excelente entrevista
There is a little innuendo at best (if that), so calling it filthy was a ridiculous back then as it is today. I mean those people's heads must have literally exploded when they heard "Justify My Love" and "Erotica". And rightfully so. 😉
Yeah. Her JML Music Video made 10,000 Christian pastors grab a pen and write angry letters to the music execs... y'know... right after changing their pants XD
Wow, I don't think this was ever banned in the UK? I do remember every single girl turning up on fancy dress day as Madonna when we were at infant school which was probably frowned upon a bit, but seven-year-olds tend not to care! It's hard to overestimate the impact of strong women like her on 80s childhoods.
Elvis used to be banned from the waist down.
This version is so much better than the studio version. I ❤️ Madonna.
That list is all Princes fault. Seriously who lets their mother listen to "Darling Nikki"?? Everybody knows you listen to Prince alone alone with your ear to the speaker. It was the 80s we didn't have Internet yet😂😂😂
We did Darling Nikki. Tasha made it 15 seconds in and was like “Nope”😂😂😂😂
Saw her in Orlando, FL on this tour with the unknown Beastie Boys opening. They got booooooed pretty hard. She was great!!
If they thought this song was bad man they would be having a heartache in today's world.
I have a soft spot for this song.
madonna was the first Beyonce. Madonna paved the way for all future women pop stars.
Singing about love is only dirty in America.
Back when the music mattered more than the dancing and choreography
Yes Eighties were magical❤ Eighties never die
I was 9 years old and got hooked.Didnt know the meaning of this song or like a virgin. Same with Prince💜
This song is poetry
Then her _"Justify my love"_ Official Music Video came out... and everyone forgot all about the 'filthy fifteen' ; )
This song is tame but Madonna embodies sexuality and female empowerment. She’s confident, she’s in control. Who else could pull off a belt with the tag “BoyToy” which she wore for years? Conservative parents couldn’t deal with a woman taking ownership of their sexuality and being proud of it. The song made the list by default.
I'd like for you to explore all of the filthy 15 to get your reactions.
There were a lot of songs with sexual innuendos I never got as a kid. I've only learned that She Bop by Cyndi Lauper was about masturbation by reading the comments in reaction videos.
Watch her dance movies again..... Then watch Elvis Presley.....She was mimicking Elvis Presley.
Buen trabajo
Was this song actually singled out? That's funny, because it's from the Like A Virgin album. Look up her performance of THAT song from the Video Music Awards. Then we'll be talking dirty.
Right?! I just posted my own comment about that performance! lol
Crazy how many major and important problems exist in the world, and some choose to wring their hands about popular song lyrics. Man people got too much time on their hands.
Nowadays it would easily be Filthy Fifty.
The PMRC also called out John Denver for "Rocky Mountain High" simply because of the word high in the title. A bunch of misguided prudes.
Saw her at alpine valley in Wisconsin in the mid 80s(before she got too freaky😂) saw a lot of concerts, she put on one of the best shows I remember her changing in a phone booth on stage like Clark Kent comin out in a different outfit.as a teen boy I had a pretty good idea what she promoting.😂teens were a lot smarter in the 80s😂
that was the Who's That Girl tour... her tour in support of True Blue and Who's That Girl.. and she was doing Dress You Up when she was in the phone booth changing her outfit
I don't recall this Madonna song being banned 🤔🤔🤔
thanks for playing a Madonna classic... but on the filthy 15? that's ridiculous. 🙄
I was half expecting reverend Copeland to pop out instead...
Madonna is the Queen of Pop 🎉
Do your research before posting/commenting. The PMRC was a bunch of idiots who got attention for attacking music and saying it was too vile. They specifically went after certain artists and songs. Meanwhile, some of the things they attacked weren’t even “spicy” in that time. For example, this song “Dress You Up” by Madonna, isn’t spicy. It’s not even coded to be sexual. They just chose it because it’s a Madonna song. But these people and this list is the reason we ended up with the “Parental Advisory” label, which no one bothered with.
And now we have pound town.
If Tipper Gore thought this was filthy, she must have had a heart attack at Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus' MTV performance oBlurred Lines. LOL
Madonna is the real deal🙌 pls do the one when she kissed Britney and Christina👌its pretty lit☀
Yes, I was a teen in the 80's. The overall vibe was fun and innovative. Not felt that since. Of course conservatives of the day couldn't handle this, republican President Reagan at the helm for most of the decade. Suppression will always bring out the best in people lol.
hello, in my opinion the dirtiest songs of Madonna are, Where Life Begins, Erotica, Rain, Holy Water, Like a Prayer, Justify My Love
This is tame compared to some of the other stuff she has done. Really.
Madonna rules hips and all
she was hot back then, the taylor swift,of the 80;s, l,o.l, you must be my lucky star,
She was not like Taylor Swift, Madonna was authentic and liked without pretending to be nice 24/7
Interesting. She had way worse songs than this
Queen Madonna
T acting like he never heard of The Filthy Fifteen when the baddie he dated in sophomore year of high school was climbing the top 5.
Edit: This is a joke, Tasha. A bad joke. My apologies.
🤣
There really is nothing in this song that is sexual. Nor this performance. Darling Nikki... yes. This, no. It's people with dirty minds reading into things IMO.
Madonna has a ton of, “filthy/dirty”, songs in her portfolio of music, but this is definitely NOT one of them. The hip gyrations are what I’d call dancing. LOL
✌🏻✌🏻
PRIME MADONNA.
This song filthy??? Not when at the same time you had Prince singing about a “pocket full of condoms, some of ‘em used”.......😂😂😂😮lmfao
See, but you are putting meaning on the song that wasn’t there at all, it had nothing to do with sexual innuendo at all, she’s explained this many times.
What u talking about
Where is your girlfriend?
She's on the couch sleep.
Oh, ok! LOL. @@TheAdventuresofTNT
You could count on half a hand 80s songs that would still compete these days ,A few WASP songs and maybe The Mentors and you'd be struggling after that to come up with anything much .
Well The Mentors weren't mainstream, on the radio. WASP hardly was either. Cuz I was gonna add GG. But Samantha Fox was 😂🤣
Madonna was a provocateur. SWANS were way more unsettling (and using Catholic iconography).
