I'm officially getting old when a video about kitchen mixers gets me excited.
My beloved wife got sick and died a few years ago :( .. Cancer :( ... but the Christmas of the year we got married (when she was 18 years old and 105 pounds) I bought her a Kitchen Aid with EVERY accessory they had! :) ... (at the "The Bay") ,... now Im a single Dad with 4 kids at home and I use the Kitchen Aid weekly! :)
i am sorry for your loss. we have the wedding gift mixer for 26 years and it is as good as ever.
We have a 28 year old Kitchenaid. it runs like new.
We upgraded to a 7 quart because our original is only 4.5 quarts.
So sorry for your loss, my dad got my mom a K5SS 1987 after her Mixmaster died after yrs of holiday baking. I still have it and use it occasionally mainly cause I'm single and don't bake bit batches.
The best mixer in the world by far,me and my wife bout one 48 years ago still I use it ( my wife past away last year).

My grandmother still uses the exact same KitchenAid stand mixer when I was an infant child 30 years ago. I was hoping to inherit it but I grew impatient and bought my very own just a couple of days ago.
I have had mine for 30 years and it still works. Just purchased the 7qt pro stand mixer to make larger batches of bread. Love Kitchen Aid.
Same here. But two years after buying the 7 quart I've already rebuilt it twice and I'm using it the same way I use the 30 year old one!
I just bought the Artisan. The reseller offered me a 5 years warranty for an additional 69€. Man am I glad that I refused !!!

I didn’t think I needed one until I used my mothers. I was completely spoiled! When I went back to the handmixer I absolutely hated doing cookies by hand and a Hardly baked. I got my stand mixer again in beautiful Kitchen Aid red and I love it and again love baking

It's a very rare product that can stand such a long test of time and stay ralivant more so today.
My mom got my grandma's and she had hers since the 50s or 60s and it still works like a top.

My sister has two that are still going strong after I don't know how many years. Her second one, however was an upgrade because her cookie dough batter is pretty dense and it was causing her original mixer to work too hard. My girlfriend inherited one from her best friend who just flat out gave it to her because she was moving overseas and couldn't take it. Quite the coup.
This week!! I made 20 LITERS of Red Bean Chilli :) .. with a DOZEN Pork Chops I ground into hamburger with the Kitchen Aid for my kids! :)

My mother got one just like a few years ago, and man, that thing has been used heavily. It's still working superb, had zero issues, zero warranty problems. It. Just. Works. AvE also took one apart and was very impressed with the build quality. Not a fanboy really, but I do believe KitchenAid is still proper stuff.
@@CitarNosis317 Yes and no. I've got five, the oldest from the late 1940's, the newest a KSM500PSOB.
Whirlpool experimented a lot after they took them over with Hobart, finding ways to cheapen them. Some of the changes have bee rescinded ( the horrible plastic gear disaster, for instance). Others like the speed control which not only fails but often takes the electronic control board out with it are still weak points.
Other aspects of the mixer are still top-flight. I must say the newer attachments are also much easier to clean and use than the older ones were.
@@ethelryan257 I'm glad to hear they stopped using plastic gears. That caused no end of grief for a lot of people. I always found it surprising that people had trouble with their mixers because my old 1985-ish Hobart made 4.5 qt is ridiculously bulletproof.
@@davidfuller581 they still have ONE plastic gear, mainly for the fail-safe reason which is good. incase someone hand goes into the mixer, the plastic gear breaks apart
@@maxfactor4209 Well, a shear pin is traditional for that, but I suppose we should be glad for whatever is still assembled here. DO you know what parts are made here?
I would guess the motor and electronics are CN at least.
These mixers never go on sale even refurbished one it is still expensive

I would love to own a Kitchen Aid stand mixer, but don't have the space in my small kitchen for all the appliances I want.
My first mixer was made in Korea around 40 years ago, still going, gave it to my granddaughter, I have a newer big lift stand mixer, Chinese, it broke once, found it not to be lubed very good, replaced a gear which are steel, not plastic, it broke again when I overloaded it and stripped a gear, I repair it myself. as far as complaints of parts being pot metal, part of the housing and gear cover are pot metal, nothing else, gears are all steel and one brass bearing. its good stuff but I work them making bread. they are a pretty good machine. they are reasonably easy to repair, if you have a little know how and like to do it, it will save you about 150to 200 dollars or more, not including parts, years ago I sent one back and the total was 250.00, shipping might have been free, but being as heavy as they are, if you have to pay shipping. you might as well buy a new one. or maybe a Bosch. parts are easy to get so far. the labor is always expensive, like with cars.

They're certainly not made the way they used to be!
I know a family with three siblings, one sibling got their mother's KitchenAid, the other two bought (what appeared to be) identical mixers.
The modern ones wore out within 2 years and both are already on their second replacements! Meanwhile their mother's original machine could still be used to mix concrete if they felt like it!!
I've had mine for over 10 years, use it all the time and have never had an issue. When I upgraded to my current larger capacity mixer, I gave my old 5qt to a family member and after 18 years it is still going strong. I know some people have had issues with quality in recent years, but that hasn't been my experience.
I bought mine in 2007, and it works still (only replaced the plastic knob that locks the bowl) but my friend got the new model for Christmas last year (2017) and it's already broken.
That's because - as you can see in the video - they have swapped out one of the metal gears for a plastic one, which wears down over time. Planned obsolescence, as they call it. After a while it just stops working, people pay either repairs or buy new machines and the manufacturers make more money.
@@jogon206 Yup. They will sell you all metal gears, but then you need to pay more for the Pro version. Otherwise you get plastic.
@@jogon206 Interestingly, that particular gear replaced one made out of paper soaked in a phenolic resin. Commonly called text-o-lite, those gears virtually never failed and many are still running after over 60 years.
I’ve had a Kitchen Aid mixer for several years. When the housing on the meat grinder attachment cracked, I asked the company to stand behind all their marketing braggadocio and replace it. They blew me off big time. So much for corporate character and service after the sale.
The Kitchen Aid mixer is a miniature version of the Hobart commercial mixer.
I have read that it is now made overseas and the quality has gone down (such as the use of plastic gears).
The plastic gear is to idiotproof it for home use. If you overload the capacity of the mixer you would usually destroy the entire system. With the plastic gear you only kill an inexpensive part.

I own it. it's the "90th anniversary" edition. it is nice.
Plenty of designs, as perfect as this one (such as the Cuisinart SS-700) were trashed and replaced with something newer and much less reliable.

Bought one last year, very disappointed by how weak it seemed when making bread dough.
I felt the same, key thing to take away is wetter bread doughs work well. Further if you leave it a good while the gluten will develop making it slightly easier for the machine to knead
For bread you need the kitchenaid ksm 7580 6.9 liter.

The fact is most companies have smartened up by now and realized that there is less money to be made in products that last generations. Forcing the customer to come back and buy again is their goal, that and cutting manufacturing costs. Sad, but inevitable.

unfortunately Kitchen Aid makes disposable pot metal garbage now. they've cut material costs to the point that your lucky if the machine lasts the end of the warranty period. if your in the market for a stand mixer, do your homework and read plenty of reviews.
There is no reason to buy a Hobart for a home kitchen. You would also need a dedicated circuit for that mixer.

the solid-state govornor speed control and the embedded casing design of the basic artisan models are pretty garbage. higher-end models have DC motors, and separate motor housing, makes repair much easier, less noisy and way more power.

They got it right by copying a Kenwood.

Well, my NEW kitchenaid was made in china. Piece of junk comparatively. It came with two stickers in the casting underneath, and when I called kitchenaid, they told me neither one was legit. It was bought from amazon from the kitchenaid store.
I got one. After 14 months the top was getting loose and I called Kitchen Aid. They offered me 100 off a new one and said sorry. They don't service them, they don't stand behind them. They just try and sell you another.
Such a rip off. It's not economical to bake at home if you are paying 40 a month for a mixer.
Don’t worry...Trump is trying to fix this overseas bullshit.
