Great looking lounge, but made for the smaller people of an earlier era. You can absolutely see that when the big guy in the gray shirt does the "rock test" - it looks like a kid's chair with him on it. I find sitting position way too far back and the overall feel very slouchy, and I think the seat is low and too hard to get up and out of. Love to have one one, but I doubt I'd sit in it much. Rather have a pair of Eames bent-wood chairs!
Ahhhh the Shock Mounts! A huge flaw in the design. Don't get me wrong... I'm a huge fan, but those shock mounts are weak. Probably the best they would do for the 50s, but these frequently break here and not just on the Lounge but on his other designs. Given the advancement in technology I am surprised that Herman Miller hasn't upgraded this with some sort of additional mechanical solution. I am speaking from experience BTW.
I've heard and seen my share of horror stories fortunately mine haven't given out...yet watching that big guy doing the rock test at the end..I was cringing!! lol
The "replica chairs" or just fakes have mounts that break quite easily. I've had an original one for 30 years now and it isn't close to giving despite continuous 'rocking'

And out of all of the mid-century modern excluding noguchi Boomerang coffee table with glass top is my most desired pieces to own. This chair rocks.
Exactly. also I remember around 10 years ago it cost around 4-5k I think, and I was thinking if I save up in 5-10 years I'd be able to afford it, but by then it cost 7-8k. Aside from it's iconic design, for me the greatest value is really the comfort, I've tried other chairs in some show room where they had other expensive and iconic furniture too, but this one was just on another level. I just wish they redesign the structure because this old design doesn't seem to be able to take abuse. I mean I know they get the big guy to rock it 3x, but the chair is kind of more like a sofa, but I don't think that chair could handle that big guy throwing himself on it like it was a sofa. I'd hate to save up for 10 years and more to have that chair broken because I wasn't sitting down slowly.
@@holohulolo Believe it or not that sure is extremely resilient. It looks fragile but it is a well designed chair by Herman Miller! That being said it wasn't designed for overly large people. AKA obese people. Was designed for a person who is height weight proportioned.
People were way smaller back then... in old commercials, you can see even men comfortably resting their heads on the top cushion. Now when you look at UA-cam reviews, most guys have their heads floating or are laying it on top of the cushion.
Save yourself about $3,500 and get a Stressless Recliner made by Ekornes in Norway. I have the Magic and its wonderful. I would buy one of these Eames Lounge chairs for $800-$1500 but thats the worth I see in them. No revolutionary design or mechanical engineering to make these.

Vintage originals are a pretty penny, so note! And original rare 1956 First Year Production Eames Lounge Chair with Spinning Ottoman will set anyone back £11 thousand. ETA: Lovely buttery leather.
I just purchased a “standard” (classic) version because it has the exact proportions the Eames designed for this chair. If they wanted, they could’ve manufactured 2 versions (“standard” and “tall”), but they didn’t. The standard version is THE Eames Lounge Chair while the “tall” version was created by someone at Herman Miller in 2016, possibly with the blessings of the Eames family. In person, the tall version looks ungainly and out of proportion. One can comfortably sit in the standard original version if one lounges. It is, after all, a lounge chair. If you’re going to spend the money, buy the chair as it was originally intended by Charles and Ray Eames; Otherwise, save your dollars and buy a knock-off if you want the the “tall” version or, better yet, buy a La-Z-Boy. It has no providence, is not the iconic original, doesn’t reside in the New York Museum of Modern Art and has not been in continuous production since its inception. The “tall” version is, frankly, a money-grab compromise that should have been left for the Chinese to manufacture. You don’t mess with an American icon. Oh - my chair is the standard version, Edelman black all-grain full aniline leather, oiled santos Palisander shell. It cost $9,000 on sale with this configuration, probably the most costly and is as close to the original as you can get. Unfortunately, no down and duck feathers available, just foam for the seats). It seats as comfortable as all get-out and that’s a fact. I’m proud to own this chair and I love it
@@exittiming2789 What a weird hill to die on. Are you insecure about your height? The tall version allows people over 6' to enjoy the quality and longevity of Eames design and HM craftsmanship without compromising on comfort. It is exactly that kind of combination of form and function that makes these chairs iconic. Go to the HM website and watch the brief video on the chair's product page, depicting a side-by-side comparison of a (slightly above average height) man sitting in both versions. Pause it when he leans back in the chair and notice how his head goes over the back of the "original" chair. For a lounge chair that one plans to own for a lifetime, that's not ergonomic at all. Perhaps you would be willing to sacrifice your own comfort so you can brag to internet strangers about having a chair that's less than 2" closer in height to the original. That's fine. That doesn't mean it's advisable for others to do the same, or that the chair shouldn't be produced. Frankly your take is annoying and unhelpful.
Just enough tech and fabrication proces details in this super advertisement to give it that documentary feel. Very cleverly done. Fitting for the product and the people connected with it(Eames, Miller etc.). So now I want my Eames chair, in my Eames house, with a Morgan in the garage and a top shelf analogue Bang&Olufsen audio set and... (the list is endless and very seventies, early 80s,before the cd).
it was a sad day at Herman Miller when the Eames product was outsourced to a supplier. While it has Herman Miller's name on it...it is not made by Herman Miller. I worked on various Eames product including the lounge chair for 16 of my 40+ years at Herman Miller and remember the pride we took in making the product.
I have one of these but the backrest came loose and it's a hassle to glue it back on (i cant believe they glue those backrests on as a standard procedure?)

5k for that, whaaaat, generally seeing the construction process I can understand why things are expensive. I can't figure out why this is that expensive
brand, expensive materials, expensive machinery, complex process of production with manymoving parts... but mostly branding, supply/demand, the initial choice to make this item luxurious, a status statement in a sense; also high price for supposedly high comfort from what people say (I wouldn't know)
I must admit I love mine the only problem is I have to fight to get into it. Because 9 times out of 10 I can't get into it my cat is sound asleep in it.
I own three of these chairs, one a vintage rosewood from 1959, and to be honest, if you cringe at the price then the chair is not for you. The reason the manufacturers of these chairs charge high prices is because they can, and people will continue to buy them. There are many other comfortable lounge + ottoman chairs in the market, not to mention the Eames Lounge knockoffs, but an authentic Herman Miller or Vitra Eames Lounge is more than just a chair, it's part of furniture design history.

I find sitting position way too far back and the overall feel very slouchy, and I think the seat is low and too hard to get up and out of. Love to have one one, but I doubt I'd sit in it much. Rather have a pair of Eames bent-wood chairs!
They also make a taller version.
@@drkmater06 they do but it is just a tad taller, not a big difference they need to make a really updated version for people above 175cm
Buyer beware!! Do your research and know what you are getting into before investing in this piece of furniture!!!
Search "Broken Eames Chair Shock Mounts" in your web browser. You will be SHOCKED to see how many of these chairs break catastrophically within just a few years. I purchased one in 2013 because I believed that it was an heirloom quality piece of furniture that would be in my family for many years. It broke this year (2018) and Herman Miller has refused to repair it, because it is three months out of warranty. A quick bit of research revealed that the shock mounts holding the chair together routinely fail.
I feel a moral responsibility to fellow consumers to share what I have learned. The most helpful and informative website I found is oleklejbzon.com, belonging to a master carpenter in New Jersey who has repaired thousands of these chairs, at a hefty (read
I could never hope to own one of these, but I had a very wealthy printer friend of mine own one and it is the world's most comfortable chair! And if you have the means I highly! Recommend that you purchase one! It is more than a chair, it is literally a work of art!
Mark Cuban does chairs? But what a chair!! The most comfortable in the world.
I found a 1960' real Vintage one in a country road for 10$. I will make something beautiful out of it. So happy !!!
ill pay 500 for it
I’ll pay $600
Did you ever fix it up? Curious to see photos
Oh God you're so lucky
People sure love to tell stories, don't they?
People were way smaller back then... in old commercials, you can see even men comfortably resting their heads on the top cushion. Now when you look at UA-cam reviews, most guys have their heads floating or are laying it on top of the cushion.
Save yourself about $3,500 and get a Stressless Recliner made by Ekornes in Norway. I have the Magic and its wonderful. I would buy one of these Eames Lounge chairs for $800-$1500 but thats the worth I see in them. No revolutionary design or mechanical engineering to make these.
Finally I know what the name of these chairs are and the hype around them. Always in high-end homes ..well usually!
3:53. This off-brand mark cuban is SO enamored by the fact that each cushion has... a button.
For everyone complaining about the price, get over it. You’re only complaining because you can’t afford one. Those of us who can afford one do not complain about the price. I love mine and that’s that.
Vintage originals are a pretty penny, so note! And original rare 1956 First Year Production Eames Lounge Chair with Spinning Ottoman will set anyone back £11 thousand. ETA: Lovely buttery leather.
anyone else notice how they went through this long process of automatically laying out and cutting the leather and then said "no automation is used"?
They were referring to the stitching.
@@boggsy84 Ironically it's probably only because the stitching is one of the few things that can't be automated.
Made me want to spend $5700 for a chair and ottoman. Seriously, the new highback version is amazing!
It's now around 7-8k I think.
Frankly your take is annoying and unhelpful.
my only query would be is it good for back ? it bends like a half parabolic ...not sure good for spine...unless someone can confirm it is ergonomic.
Tejinder, it's not good for work mode, only for going to sleep.
I need this shit installed in my car
Aldo, this design wouldn't be comfortable while driving.
it was a sad day at Herman Miller when the Eames product was outsourced to a supplier. While it has Herman Miller's name on it...it is not made by Herman Miller. I worked on various Eames product including the lounge chair for 16 of my 40+ years at Herman Miller and remember the pride we took in making the product.
Sad.
A used baseball glove has never sounded more appealing 👌
I have one of these but the backrest came loose and it's a hassle to glue it back on (i cant believe they glue those backrests on as a standard procedure?)
"There's no automation here, it's all done by hand" the narrator said immediately after showing you the machine that cuts all the leather automatically.
This is on my bucket list for furniture.
Le Corbusier LC chairs/sofas and the Eames Lounger is one of the few modern seatings that has form and function. There is so many modern classic furniture that looks great but is fragile and not comfortable.
Unfortunately it does not have function. Buyer beware!! Do your research and know what you are getting into before investing in this piece of furniture!!!

I somehow ran into a great deal on one of these and they are so great
6:48 Great, so one sweaty man sat on my chair before...
I really hope they pay their employees well with how much those chairs cost
DUH
The chair is really nice I'm sitting on one now
A real eames of course
I can’t wait to buy one of these for our home. They look fantastic! 😀
*thanks for posting
Good now I can make my own.
0:58 “without a concern for low cost.” There’s a new way to say “wow, this is really expensive!”
I have a Balans Tripos (now called a Varier Gravity) I purchased in 1984 and wouldn’t trade it for any other chair. I’ve had it upholstered twice since so it’s quite durable. With my lower back issues it’s the only chair I can sit in with zero problems. Artistically, I find it more creative than any chair I’ve seen as well. See for yourself.
I love this chair. I couldn't rationalize spending that much on a chair though, so I bought a $1200 knockoff that is still very nice.
I'm planning to do the same because no matter how beautiful these are where I live the price is like 6 months worth of salary.
Those chairs are so comfortable. My grandparents have that chair
It's not for every man... it's for short men... it's really really close to the ground... people don't realize how low and small it is...
I love mine , but it leans to one side . How can that be fixed ??
Put your wallet in your other pocket lol
0:13 Originally down-filled cushions (not foam)
Everytime you bought this chair, you know that some sweaty guy has already sat on it
5000$ for an Eames Lounge Chair? That's crazy! I couldn't afford one but then I saw an Eames Lounge Chair replica by Manhattan Home Design and basically, the only difference between that one and the original was the price. Save yourself thousands of dollars and get yourself an Eames Lounge Chair by Manhattan Home Design.
Once day i was walking in Seattle with my friend, i saw this chair behind the glass window andi found my self stood admiring that Lounge Chair like i was at De Wallen Amsterdam after my friend yelled
Spectacular! You manage a world heritage!
I am not going to lie I love this chair and I'm sitting right in front of one trying to make it up right out of the box and you know what this just gave me an idea I'm looking at this chair right now and I think this chair could do well with my design yeah I have a design of a concept car and this chair could do well inside of it I have a lot of ideas of how it would look on the inside of my design I just wish somebody could be interested in my design and ideas and I will show it to them and talk about what my design and ideas is all about I really do love this chair nuff respect to the person who designed this you just gave me a wonderful idea thank you😊👍
Wow I really wanna over pay for a plywood chair. I was thinking it would cost around $600... then I looked it up and it's over $5,000. Absurd.
Dear, sit on it. You'll know why it's worth $5000. If I only have the money I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
The value is in its history.
My job sold these for 350$
89 Candy caprice where’d you work, DhGate?
I work for Herman Miller
Does this chair come pre build I’m assuming ?
First time sitting on one today. Fell asleep within 5 minutes.
Oh Eames Lounge Chair. Someday soon you will be mine!
I have the Vitra version. Personally think it’s the nicer of the 2 officially certified offerings.
Is it really necessary for the huge guy to massively stress the shock mounts like this at 6.50?
watching this while sitting on my garden chair
i had 2 of these ..i regret that i sold them ...i shouldve keep one for me :((
best looking chair and comfortable !
I’m hooked...the real thing is the only way to go!
Any idea where I can purchase 10 of these ?
Any leads are much appreciated; it’s pretty urgent . Thanks 👍🏽
my dream chair. one day i will have one!
@ Seameus selling my own for 3,500,made in 2012. Classic black, beautiful.
Hi. Would anyone know the backrest angle (Herman Miller brand) of this iconic chair? Thank you. God bless, Proverbs 31
5k for that, whaaaat, generally seeing the construction process I can understand why things are expensive. I can't figure out why this is that expensive
brand, expensive materials, expensive machinery, complex process of production with manymoving parts... but mostly branding, supply/demand, the initial choice to make this item luxurious, a status statement in a sense; also high price for supposedly high comfort from what people say (I wouldn't know)
They are made to order with multiple customizations. Also purchase it in Santos Palisander and it's far more than $5 k.
Me and my family know this only as the Frasier chair
why do prices vary so much? does anybody have an idea why?
Some are fakes. That's why.
That looks so frickin cozy right ?
6:50 Slouching on the job? He rocked FOUR times!
So good the company folded?
Which company?
I have a 1976 Eames Lounge & Ottoman for sale...Brazilian Rosewood, Chocolate leather PERFECT COND
im a young architect, when i one day i become partner at a firm i will not buy a Rolex, i will buy my own eames chair.
You'll be loaded one day. Get the chair first, then the Rolex lol
Get a Grand Seiko. Rolex is just too "meh" these days, with few exceptions of course (Rolex Cellini moonphase)
I’m soon ditching all seating for two of these in front of my McIntosh amplifier.
I must admit I love mine the only problem is I have to fight to get into it. Because 9 times out of 10 I can't get into it my cat is sound asleep in it.
Sit on the cat lol. After a few times the cat won’t sit in it anymore lol
Did the Brady Bunch set have one of these?
I own three of these chairs, one a vintage rosewood from 1959, and to be honest, if you cringe at the price then the chair is not for you. The reason the manufacturers of these chairs charge high prices is because they can, and people will continue to buy them. There are many other comfortable lounge + ottoman chairs in the market, not to mention the Eames Lounge knockoffs, but an authentic Herman Miller or Vitra Eames Lounge is more than just a chair, it's part of furniture design history.
Just bought two from IKEA. There great.
I know this is an Old, old video…but I do NOT want a NEW one…I want an old, used one. Where in the world do you find them?
For $8,000 naah some luxuries are not for me. I'd rather use the money to help people out
That taquila made me think of my wedding day. Oh my...
6:45 What a great job: official chair tester! Another great job, ice cream tester. Just think of working in those two places…
In a parallel universe: when the boss says “ go rock in the chair and do your job!”
beautiful. ..just beautiful.
We had one at work and the base fell off.
@@stephenhobbs1052 I'm not so sure. The vendor did come repair it. It probably got a ton of use with people sitting on it all the time.
great video !
The arms & back are attached with a rubber "shock mount" which is glued to the plywood. This fails very often. They come off with pressure. And over time the rubber disintegrates and falls off.
Prove it
@@daveklein2826 I repair furniture for a living. This is something I've seen many times. Ask HM if you doubt.
Now i want one.
Gary Smith? More like Quentin Tarantino :P
