Sonic, you're gonna love this: I found an accidental easter egg in the movie. When Johnny fights Goro, it takes place in two parts, and Johnny gets a flawless victory in both. Then he wins with a stage fatality at the pit. The very next fight is Reptile. Johnny literally unlocks the secret Reptile fight from MK1 by getting a double flawless and fatality at the pit, and as far as I know the production team doesn't even realize they did that 🤣
*"Why do you hate Mortal Kombat franchise?"* Do these people really think a hater would go so much in depth with the franchise iterations, extensively break them down and explain in detail why it doesn't work? Does it ever cross their minds, that the biggest fans are also the harshest critics?
People tend to forget that you can be a fan of a series/franchise but that doesn't mean you Have to like every single thing about it. Doesn't make you any less of a fan.
Even the R rating and gore felt like a cheesy attempt to sell tickets and sucker people in thinking it would be good. The gory Fatalities were nice, but they felt like a cash grab considering how terribly written the rest of the film was after the 1st scene.
The crew commentary about Kano's appearance was actually pretty endearing and shows the stark difference between 95 movies and the 21 movie. They cared about what fans wanted and respected their input.
@@tiaaaron3278 Of course, kids are attracted to anything that supposed to not be for kids. But my point was, for the movie, I’m surprised they used kids to check things instead of old teenagers or young adults. Especially during this time when MK was one of the many controversies caused by soccer moms that lead to the esrb.
I like this Raiden way better. He doesn't participate in the tournament, but uses his time on Earth to mentally prepare Liu, Johnny, and Sonya by telling them what they need and improve themselves as warriors. He tells jokes, but is protective of his charges, and all his plans and decisions actually work.
Hey, is it me just because I finished watching moon knight for the third time, or does Christopher Lambert sound a lot like Ethan Hawke? Believe it or not, before you said that this was Lambert, I was like “wow, greatness from small beginnings much?”
Little correction: Goro's roars and growls were actually done by Frank Welker. It makes for a good contrast to show Goro's two sides, one being the sophisticated prince of the Shokan, the other being the total monster in Kombat.
I loved when Liu Kang was fighting Shang Tsung, then when it seemed like there was no hope he said “It’s Kangin’ time!” Then he kanged all over the bad guys and won. Truly a work of art. 21/10
"I don't think so" has got to be Raiden's most iconic line. Of course, that's thanks in no small part to Chris Lambert's amazing delivery. What a legend. 👌⚡
Cary is a national Treasure and his acting range is amazing from the loving grandpa to a mysterious boat host to a believable villain and to a just and strict shogun.
Sonic, just because Trevor Goddard had less screen time than Josh Lawson as Kano, doesn't mean Josh Lawson was the superior Kano. For the small amount of time we got him, Trevor Goddard made a BIG and memorable impression. He's the whole reason Kano was retconned as an Aussie. Plus every line he said was meme material. Me and my friends to this day still love imitating his voice and saying his lines.
Lawson was an interesting expansion on what Kano could of been from 95; Original flick industrial vibe early scene aesthetic; docks fog chains ghost boat strobe light club; and the chicken that fucking chicken drum that Trevor was eating pre goro entry say alot more to more than JL did; Lawson talked alot but TG was allowed much more said from a character perspective they made him look good until the last moment in full daylight with Bridgette; That Veronica Vaughn is one hot tamale
Did some browsing on the movie’s background, apparently Linden Ashby and Trevor Goddard are the reason why Johnny Cage and Kano are depicted the way they are in the games. They quite literally made the characters. Seriously, people consider this movie a cheesy disaster, but Ashby, Goddard, and Tagawa are so damn influential to the series. Legendary. (And I still stand by what I said in the “MK 95 Sucks” preview, Kano is a stud in this movie. I’d tap that Kanass)
Pretty sure he’d top you lol doesn’t really seem like the submissive type. Now me; an esteemed intellectual 🧐, I prefer that reptussy, nothing like warm soothing battery acid 😫
I always loved the portrayal of Liu Kang in this film...but from how he dresses and meets Johnny Cage....I REALLY do love that because its like a modern, civilian of society take but that can easily turn into his Shaolin Monk rooted version.
I really like what you said about Liu Kang's motivation and arc in this movie. I think it's because he's usually too Superman, "I must save the world and I must be the best" and all that. This really is the most humanized version of him that I can think of. Spot on. In Scorpion's Revenge, he's okay, but very boring. In MK9, he's fine. Got a bit of personality, but no real motivation. He's just there because he has to be, and Raiden chose him. But in MK '95, he's a real human being who happens to kick ass really well. Also very handsome. XD
@@SonicHaXD Yep! Anyone can relate to revenge, but only the truest of Chads get or appreciate redemption. 🧔🏼 XD Both can and do work well, though. Especially here.
I hate how some people quickly say "oh its just nostalgia" when someone says 95 mk is better than 21. After seeing 21 I actually went out and bought 95 as while I saw 95 a lot when I was younger I never owned it so I bought the Best Buy steel book. After seeing 95 again its not nostalgia its just an overall better product. 21 has the opening sub and scorp scene and kano. Thats really the big pluses for that movie. 95 is filled to the brim with great characters. I love our heroes Liu, Jonny, Sonya and raiden. The villains are also memorable as well and Cary has still yet to be topped and this movie made who Kano is. In fact as you said this movie help mold the MK universe. The fights are also much better as well and they didn't even need to spill blood and dam that soundtrack is fantastic and enhances the fights. There are some flaws like the aged visuals but it doesn't bring the whole product down with it. Also people who say "all you do is hate on MK" dont get why you point out how crap this stuff is. Its because you love MK so much that you point out this stuff and that you know MK can do better as there is proof such as this very movie. I really enjoyed this video and the youtube link montage at the end.
*[SPOILER WARNING FOR THE MK2021 AND MK1995 FILMS]* Plus, this is a long rant. I completely agree. I definitely prefer the 1995 movie, Scorpion's Revenge, and Battle of the Realms over that 2021 garbage. Every MK movie has their flaws, but it's not "nostalgia blindess" if you prefer the more game accurate look for Kano having the mechanical eye plate in the '95 movie over him not having that at all and magically using his iconic eye laser from having a man-child pissy-fit during a feast in the 2021 movie. Both Kano actors were great and it did suck that Kano didn't even use his eye laser or any of his moves in the '95 movie, but thats just 1 of it's flaws. I'm not going to address all of the flaws of the 2021 movie, just the ones that pissed me off the most. Cole Young, at first while we were still learning more about the movie long before it's release, I had no issues with them adding a character just for the movie that was never in any game. That all changed when I found out that Cole Young would be the main character and focus of the movie. The 1995 film had a movie-only character as well named Art Lean, but he was a minor character who's role in the film was to befriend the main heroes and then die during the tournament which would piss off and motivate Johnny Cage. That brings me to Goro. In the 1995 film Goro is hyped up in several great scenes and a 25 second second montage of him destroying 20 fighters before he fights Art Lean. In the 2021 film Goro is only seen once before he is sent to kill Cole Young, he's barely hyped up or mentioned at all before that. The story for the MK2021 movie takes place before the events of the 1st MK tournament in Earthrealm (MK1) kind of, yet they treat the undefeated champion and sub-boss of MK1 like a random big dumb brute. Another flaw that pissed me off was how the MK2021 film never included or mentioned Quan Chi. Most MK fans knows that Quan Chi morphed into Bi-Han to frame him for the murder of Scorpion, his family, and clan which caused the entire blood feud between Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the first place. With no Quan Chi, that leads everyone to believe that it was actually Bi-Han himself who started the rivalry. The "not having Quan Chi" flaw isn't really a big deal since it is a reboot and they can still work around it and introduce Kuai Liang anyway. I only brought it up because the rivalry and fights between Scorpion and Sub-Zero were the ONLY parts of the 2021 movie that I actually liked and I honestly don't even like either of those characters in the games. The 2021 film definitely did both Scoprion and Sub-Zero better than the 1995 film, but back then, the characters' backstories were nowhere near as fleshed out as they are now. In 1995, there was no Hanzo Hassashi or Bi-Han. During the production of the 1995 film, only the 1st 2 MK games were out where hardly anyone had a decent backstory. MK3 (not Ultimate) came out in arcades only 3 months before the movie came out in theatres. I'm sure the movie was already in post production while the original MK3 was new in the arcades. It's okay if people do like the 2021 reboot for what it is, but I hated it. I'll happily keep my "nostalgia blindness" and favor a movie based on a franchise that during it's time only had 2 games out, 17 characters worth of lore, a PG-13 rating and still showed more care to the source material than a 2021 reboot with a cheesy cash grabbing R rating, a ridiculously stupid plot device called "arcana", a terribly written movie-only main character in a movie based on the same franchise that now has 3 decades of backstory, lore, and over 70 god damn characters. (Excluding the DLC guest characters obviously) Apparently, tech firm Akami reported that MK2021 was the 5th most pirated film of 2021 which is funny, because that's exactly how I watched it. I deleted it right after because I didn't want that pile of trash wasting space on my PC any longer. There was no way in Hell that I was gonna spend money on it either.
I had fun watching 21 with my friends, but we definitely had our problems. It felt like it got worse over time. It started strong with Scorpion and Sub-Zero speaking Japanese and Chinese respectively, and it was awesome to see Kabal again, but after Reiko got clapped and Kung Lao got his soul sucked (lol), I was like "uh oh." Not to mention the very existence of Cole Young's ability
@@UltimateShadow10 One gripe: Bi-Han *did* kill Scorpion in the original timeline. However you're right on the money about Quan Chi framing him for killing his clan.
Fact 💯💯 your right the nostalgia line dose get old but I must admit it's part of it and I agree not only nostalgia but over a petter product then the remakes today facts
This movie may not have the blood and gore, but what it lacks in gore, it makes up for in characters and story. Even throwing in some mk2 stuff in this movie didn't feel off. But I am ready to see the flaws this movie has with memes and sonichaxd's commentary. Edit: How did I not think of saying "...may not have blood and gore, it makes up for with lore." Huge missed opportunity.
Right, putting Reptile or Kitana did not felt wrong, they fit good enough in the story of Mk95 even if Reptile was just a silent tough guy, while 2021 had Kabal, a survivor of Shao Kahn attack on earth , forced to live with his mask. WTF he was doing on this island, why he was on bad guys side? I know they needed someone to be killed, but character like Kabal did not deserve this kind of spot in story.
@@pheenmachine TBH, i liked the idea of Kabal being a policeman and being buddies with Stryker, like in MK9. Anyway, we can agree it is too early for this character and it it a wasted potential, just like Mileena.
@@Endru85x You know I forgot about that. Can't believe MK 9 is over 10 years old now sheesh. Yea way MK 2021 suffered from the too many characters for no reason problem that Annihilation had.
@@pheenmachine Got the same man. 10 years ago i was living in my hometown and getting excited for MK revival and now i am just having nostalgia feelings about it :)
While maybe not exactly Oscar-worthy in the acting department, this movie is extremely amusing, inspired and impactful. It was basically a "story mode" of Klassic MKs and a marvelous one at that. It could sound a tad exaggerated but I enjoyed it not only more than Annihilation but more than almost all konquests and stories (maybe save the story in MK9).
The behind the scenes was amazing, it added a lot to the video. Dang, they did this in 1995 with outdated technology, and we got that crappy movie in 2021, what a shame
Even though I Despise MK11 and Aftermath,Shang Tsung is One of If Not the Best Part of it and judging for the Actor Getting Older, this Could be Tagawa's Final Role with the Character.
12:45 Art was always a character outside MK that I felt sympathetic and wanted to actually see in the game since 1995. I saw this movie as a kid and of course the fact he's not in the game stuck out like a sore thumb but he was well written and it made me curious about his story... when Goro kills him I actually felt it was reason enough to move Johnny's story forward. COLE YOUNG, on the other hand...
In the original script he actually was a proper character. They kept it in the novelization, which is great, although differs in certain aspects (Johnny vs Goro fight, Sonya vs Kano fight; Jax gets a bit more mention; Sonya fights Jade, as was originally intended). By far, the only thing I hated about the novelization was that Raiden was more like in the 21 movie: bossy and rude.
"They were some of the best fights in the movie cause the audience told us to go away and do it!" If only Hollywood listened to fans like this these day (instead of insulting them), the recent MK film would've been vastly different!
@@tiaaaron3278 "We replaced Johnny Cage with Cole Young because we didn't want a white man lead" .... ignorant of the fact that Liu Kang was supposed to be the protagonist. They replaced the chinese lead with a half-asian lead, so badically semi-white washing the lead and then claiming they were "adding" diversity. Idiots.
@@EndoScorpion Not to mention they are giving the role of Scorpion, a traditionally Japanese character to a modern AMERICAN half-white hero. It's double whitewashing and cultural erasure too.
I came up with a theory about the "God Fist Descending Legend" title. If you can technically say that Shang-Tsung is a god (I mean he was claiming like one with his soul sucking magic and such (I think)) and "God Fist" is Lui Kang (since he beat the ''god'') so we can probably say that Lui Kang is a legend that beats descended gods with fists. With that info in mind we can probably assume that Mortal Kombat is a story about Lui Kang, which makes sense with the titling (wow)
God Fist Descending Legend: story (legend) about Liu Kang - the champion (fist) of a god (Raiden) - fighting and beating (descending upon) evil. Makes sense, no?
This movie is literally a work of art, and it's still one of the best video game movies ever. I liked the part where Johnny Cage said, "It's Cagin' Time" and caged Goro's nutsack, truly spectacular
I am annoyied that they are never honest about this subject. "They white washed the japanese god" But no one ever complained about having a Heimdall as a black actor in MCU Thor (Not that I have a problem with it personally). Just say that it is about diversity already, that is fine.😢
Thank you for your bit about Liu Kang and shang tsungs fight and defending lius response to shang's transformation in front of him. I was thinking the same thing. I didn't really believe that he just believed that it was his brother he clearly showed that he was hesitant until he said all the right things. One of the things that people forget about Shang, is that when he takes their soul he takes their memories and abilities as well. So he probably had that ready to go the instant he turned into his brother. It's a really clever nugget information used that people like to forget
The interviews are pretty good. Seems like Linden Ashby and Robin Shou are buddies off screen. You can tell a lot of love went into this movie and your video! Great stuff!
@@featherguardian6023 Johnny I can understand but Sonya is bland in new games. The whole issue with Special Forces in modern era is they are in our faces way too much. If they had remained side-characters, they would have been better. Sonya and Jax are shadows of their former selves. Kombat Kids suck ass. In the world of sorcerers, wraiths, cryomancers, etc, why would you focus on these boring humans in the first place?
@@tiaaaron3278 Ok Sonya and Jax aren't Bad,sure they are Shadow of their Former Selves, but I like that Sonya has Responsibilities but it doesn't make Her Heartless, she's just doing Everything in Her Power to Protect Her Realm,Family, and Love Ones, and Jax is a Veteran that went in Hell Scaring Him for Like and All He Want is Peace, and even though I Despise Kung Jin with a Passion,I Love Cassie Cage,Takeda Takahashi, and Jackie Briggs, true I don't want to see the Special Forces Characters Again but if this is the Last Time we will see Them,at Least they had a Good Run.
"You hate MK" I feel you on that. Everything you said in that rant. It's only when you love something *this* much that you would go *this* far to criticize it. Because there's that nagging part of yourself that desperately just *wants* it to be actually good. Or just better. Because then your love for it will feel more validated. I'm also a big fan of MK. Have been for a long time. But that doesn't mean I won't criticize certain decisions and moves the creators behind the games, movies and general stories. I honestly believe that the developers and writers should up their game some more, now that MK has gotten as popular and successful as it has. Also, it just shows that something doesn't have to be "actually good," or even brilliant, for you to love it. Amazing video once again. Last comment (for now, probably. XD) Can't wait for the next one! And congrats for clutching on Malenia. XD
We need people like you to work for NetherRealm. Because the people there are nuts. I'm still in full rage mode after what they did to Sindel, my favorite female character of the series!
@@DigitalWraith Thank you lol. That would actually be nice. I've been a Kombatant since I was... too you to play MK. 🤣 I like a few of the things NetherRealm has been doing, but I also see faults often enough. Or just a lot that can be improved, elaborated, explored, etc. I'm also a writer, so I guess that's why I enjoy thinking about stuff like that lol.
Paul W.S. Anderson before: "Hey, Mortal Kombat is a cool game. So let's focus on its coolness for the movie!" Paul W.S. Anderson now: "So, how can I shoehorn my wife into the movie?"
There are many funny moments in this video some of my favorite are Jax not being trusted, distorted Kitana moments, the Jurassic Park cut, Johnny falling down the tower, and the Sub Zero dance off. Overall this video was really fun to watch can’t wait to see if you’ll be able to do the sequel.
Fun fact: I watched this movie on repeat since I was SIX years old. The "your brother's soul is mine" moment scared the absolute SHIT out of me as a kid. Still traumatizes me a little to this day. Though, the transition scene into Liu Kang waking up from a nightmare is something I still struggle to even look at. Not sure why. Safe to say, close up shots of characters with dynamic face expressions messed me up. It's not so bad now...but my anxiety always seems to remind me of that fear as a kid, even only a little.
You know, for someone that's supposed to be a "cheesy 90's film" I think this review has showed me that it is great despite having no gore and being cheesy. But I personally think that it's good that it not only made the characters good, made the absolute mechanical nightmare that was Goro, and made the story simple but good nonetheless. I may be an old soul, but I personally like these kind of action movies that actually have the characters fight. Instead of having a gun fight like you'll see in most modern movies. So I'll check it out and see for myself. Also the fact that some of these actors hurt themselves during the making of this film really shows how dedicated some of these people are.
This is a really great homage to the 95 classic! It's kinda warming to see the cast recount their BTS stories and laughs they've shared. While I saw it as campy, my brother LOVES MK, and I can see why people love it; and all of your videos are definitely most of the main reasons why.
23:52 Fun fact, in the brazilian portuguese dub, Shang Tsung says "Vitória Limpa" which means something closer to "Clean Victory", in the sense that it was an honest fight, without cheating. That gives a whole different meaning to the scene, because what you take away from it is that the heroes need to expect all kinds of supernatural abilities to be used against them, because anything goes in the tournament.
This ironically is probably the best in the SUCKS series just from nostalgia as well as growing up with this before getting into MK stuff and to top it off, got to learn some very interesting (and funny) info from it. Thank you Sonic for this masterpiece ❤️
Amazing review. So funny and hilarious. Okay, I have to say it. Your YTP concept is my favourite. It's silly, it's stupid and cringy... but I love it. Your videos are well made and created and I see you have putted plenty of your effort. Keep it up. About editing, nah. It's perfect. Don't change anything. Anywho, see you in the next video. @@SonicHaXD if zombie Liu kang comes back in a future game do you think he should be a skin or a different character I think the lasser because there very different I could see some hook attacks now
Even though the movie is really cheezy and hasn't aged that well in some aspects The reason this gem has stood the test of time is because it was made with the fans and love for the games in mind, I didn't even realise how much effort the actors and director put in. And ,of course, it gave us one of the greatest theme songs of all time.
THANK YOU for the love 'rant' about Liu Kang, I always saw this version of him as his best depiction in all MK Midia, its good to see it being recognized by someone else.
This movie really helped develop so many characters. It gave us the Australian sleaze bag Kano, the cocky but slowly maturing Jonny Cage, the Smug and manipulative Shang Tsung, and the Mentor Raiden
this movie showed that you don't need blood and more extreme violence to have a movie be good. just have likable characters and a simple story to understand. for real i'm getting a star wars vibe from this cast. Raiden's like Ben kenobi, Liu kang's like Luke, Johnny as Han, Sonya as Leia, you get the idea.
Yeah MK 1995 is one of the best video game adaption film that has ever made because they have really amazing actors that played their characters like Liu Kang, Sonya, Johnny Cage, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Shang Tsung, and Goro. But Art Lean on the other hand is a pretty underrated character in this film due to his personality and he's twice as better than this generic, bland, and plot armor Cole Young. But yeah this film is way better than MK2021 that were very disappointing.
Tbh, I'd be down if they introduced Art as a playable character in a future game, especially if they keep the 90s feel to his clothes and his style. Would be a great treat for the longtime fans :)
Raiden has several multiple identities connected to Gods of various Pantheons, as we see with his dialogue with Nightwolf, he’s not even human, but just takes the appearance of one. He can easily be Zeus, Thor, Perun or some other Indo-European Diespiter archetype in the MK lore, there’s lots of them. Sub-Zero is technically an Edenian descendant, though we don’t know how many generations more than Chinese, so a case could be made. Scorpion, yeah, they goofed.
Same as stuff like making Haimdal and Norse Gods Black in fantasy settings it doesn't matter its not like they are playing real people in history or wareing you know which would be problematic, they are Gods so who cares, they would take what for they want. Actually Sub Zero is half outworlder not edenian thats non canon.
I grew up watching both movies over and over on vhs and yeah the first one is still the best but everyone just bandwagon hates on Annihilation. Idc I still love them both and even though I haven't watched them in awhile the last time I did with my baby momma, I had to stop myself from saying the lines. Lol I even know the sound and music during each scene, basically the whole movie, both etched into my memory forever.
Amazing video. Great job as always, Sonic. I was never too much into BTS , interviews or conventions stuff, but it's really wholesome how Robin Shou has this BIG smile, this pure *happiness* all over his face when talking about this movie. The man had a ton of fun with it and it still has a very special place in his heart. Which makes it a 100 times more baffling that they got Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Christopher Lambert, Linden Ashby and Bridgette Wilson to reprise their roles and "movie skins", but nothing about our Chosen One.
A friendly reminder for those who may want to put MK in film or series, again: Mortal Kombat is a fighting game IT IS NOT a (nonsense) gore game. Besides, blood was present in Capcom and SNK fighting games as well. And in order to perform a fatality (the gore part) you must win a fight first. Furthermore, the laziest fatalities by far are those from UMK3 and that game is one of the most played games and it's still played in tournaments around the world. Because MK is a f*cking fighting videogame. Even in the Warner era, where the gore of the fatalities is sky high, no one lose a tournament match for not making a fatality. Kontestants just have to win their fight and that's it. That is for me part of what makes this movie so good, the martial art fights. Even the messy MK Konquest TV series had at least two martial art fights per episode. And this just got better when you see that the new movies have NO ACTUAL FIGHTS. Just brawl and straight murder.
Fuck yea MK Konquest, used to watch it every Monday after WCW Nitro lol. How about the web series from back then too, that you could "bet on" ? Man MK was doing wild stuff.
I don't know if what you said was sarcasm but I agree with the part that Mortal Kombat wasn't just senseless violence since it's true that in mk9 they wasted the characters killing them
You're only half-right -- while it's not "all about" the gore and brutality, that's still a core part of it's personality and was intentionally baked into the game's design specifically to make it stand out against the other 'bloody' games you mentioned. Street Fighter had the fighter's bleeding in their lose portraits and Samurai Shodown had sprays of blood, yes. *_Mortal Kombat had a ninja with ice magic rip off someone's head and present it to the audience with it's spine still attached._* That is all.
Yeah honestly even before video game movies like Detective pikachu and sonic the hedgehog came ,Mortal Kombat was the best video game movie and now is one of the best video game movie the only problem I have is the pacing and unexplained moments in the movie
Thank you for articulating how I've always felt about the Kang v Tsung fight, and the depth to the writing in this silly action movie in general. I *still* get chills every time I get to that scene, the spikes rising through the floor as Liu starts to falter psychologically, leading up to that split second where he must choose his fate, and then shouts "SHANG TSUNG KILLED MY BROTHER!"
To me, the fact that you're willing to constantly make fun and laugh at MK constantly with a smile is more proof you're a fan of the series than a someone saying they like everything about the series

Christopher Lambert was probably a major reason why Rayden was a popular as he was, just his voice and his hammy delivery in this movie was what made him awesome, and his cameo in MK11 DLC made the game for me atop Cory coming back as Shang Tsung.
This was so wholesome and awesome! I learned so much more about this than I thought especially with the translations of the MK invitation scrolls and Video Game titles that was really really cool! Amazing review!
This movie really feels like everyone had fun making it and they all became friends / family along the production of it. And what Hiroyuki Tagawa said about the fans being like little monks in their temples playing MK coming out as they gave them a "church" of MK was so wholesome i almost teared up. Bless that man.
Of course people can shit on the movie for the CGI, the acting, and idk why people shit on Christopher Lambert he was way better here than annihilation, still doesn't ruin everything else awesome about this movie 🤣
Also its very blatantly explained in the movie that Raiden just used the Christopher Lambert Skin, Liu even says to his Grandpa "Grandfather thats not lord Raiden thats a charlitan" which is a dead give away Raiden isn't normally suppose to look like Lambert.
Putting inserting moments from interviews and Q&A into the video is a great idea. @@JJ-ui4ph you are replying to a two year comment but clearly the actor is hypocrite because he doesn’t care when an Asian character mileena aka a minority turn into a black woman but is willing speak on behalf of other minorities.
MK '95 is so freaking kickass. No violence? No problem! Lest you forget that most people's first exposure to MK was with the censored 16-bit ports - you needed a code to unlock the gore in the Genesis version and the SNES version was censored permanently. Instead of gore they focused on exciting martial arts choreography, which was done be-au-ti-ful-ly. The characters? Simple and charismatic. Liu Kang has more personality than he's ever had and is a good protagonist, Johnny's a great comedic relief guy, Sonya's... alright, while Christopher Lambert and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa just steal every scene they're in and generate memes by the boatload. While Kitana is not the strongest element, she works well enough for the story and Kano is also quite memorable, despite not having that much screentime. Sub-Zero and Scorpion? Yeah, they are just goons in this version, but the story isn't about them and they still get kickass fights. In fact, about them, and also Goro and Reptile: The 2021 movie versions of Goro and Reptile were IMO quite sub-par because they are done away immediately after their introduction. The 1995 movie is way better about it, driving up the tension first - first we hear of Goro, then we see his silhouette, then we finally see him in person, then he just murders people left and right, including the sacrificial lamb guy. So when Johnny gets to fight him, the tension is there, and while there's not much of a fight, we get, in a quick succession: 1. The nut punch 2. Raiden going "Yeah!.. Sorry" 3. "Those were 500$ sunglasses, asshole" so as a kid I didn't even notice how brief it was. Reptile, despite not the best introduction, still gets the tension up when he acid spits into Liu's face and escapes, and then he gets the most kickass fight in the movie after morphing into the Human Reptile which is the best Reptile, and no, I won't be taking that one back. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are introduced as the first supernatural threat for the heroes and while only Sub-Zero gets a second establishing scene, in which he freezes and shatters a dude, I'd argue it helps establish the threat level for both of them. With Subby's fight you get some cool special effects and with Scorpion... once again, some of the most kickass choreography in the movie and a bitchin' ending with the autographed photo. The soundtrack is God-tier. That is all. MK '95 kicks ass and if it hadn't, the games wouldn't adopt like 95% (hah) of the elements it introduced.
Girl has my reaction to Robin Shou taking off the robe. Huge crush aside, Robin Shou was so good in the movie he’s pretty much the default Liu Kang for me. I’m still disappointed that he wasn’t included in the Klasaic movie pack in MK11. Also i think the people who think you hate Mortal Kombat don’t realize that a lot of the time people go hard on a franchise they like because of their love for it. They don’t realize you can criticize something connected to the franchise and still love the franchise.
“It wasn’t ashamed of it’s source material..it respected it” ***makes Scorpion and Sub-Zero into slave guardians of Shang Tsung instead of rivals that fight each other in the movie***
Tbf, this was more so them having to make some concessions because it would be hard to slot the rivalry on top of what was going on with Sonya, Liu Kang, and Johnny Cage
@@kichiroumitsurugi4363 Sonya’s plot was minor anyway and got quickly resolved so if there was anything to cut out or shorten even further it should’ve been her and kano’s plot.

Usually I'm here for the story analysis, but this video surprised me with how much interesting behind the scenes info it had. It was very enjoyable and it's obvious you're a huge fan of the series with how in-depth you managed to make this video.
I grew up with playing the MK games and saw this on the exact day it came out at the cinema with my buddy back in '95. We still think this incarnation of a MK film stayed true (for the most part) to the source material, and I have absolute mad respect and wanna give special thanks to all the actors and everyone involved (Robin Shou, Linden Ashby, Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa, Etc..) for making an unique, memorable and highly appreciated (in my book at least, haha) cult classic of a video game adaptation film!!! The MK movie theme to this day btw still gets me hyped up every time I hear it, haha!
I've only recently learnt that apparently people think MK (1995) is considered a "bad movie". I don't know how tasteless one would have to be to actually think that lol
This is so fuckin sweet man. Also, why is every life-action Raiden so much better than the animated ones? Like, yeah. The voice is sexy, but that's it. There is this precarious balance between sexy and cool that I think both land on weirdly well. Same cannot be said about any other character, really. If I had to hang out with both of these actors, like I see on screen, who are thechnically playing the same character, I can say that I would have the time of my life. What other duo can say that? 49:49 You should probably get a glass case for your camara too- to get a closer shot at all the love in these kinds of sections!
You've come a long way from those "Mortal Kombat X sucks videos" videos. It is really impressive that you have gone from short 5-10 minute character reviews, to hour and half long movie reviews. These more lengthy reviews are just as, if not more entertaining then some of the much shorter ones. That is an insanely impressive feat that your quality did not drop, despite the massive leap in runtime for each video.
Mortal kombat wasn’t just a video game in the 90’s. T shirts, lunch boxes, comics, cartoons, music was played at sports events, skating rinks etc, and finally the arcade where people would line up to play it. Mortal kombat was a HUGE part of 90’s culture.
To me, another reason this movie fares better than the 2021 disaster is that they didn't really had a good framework on how the franchise lore worked, hell a lot of stuff got retconed from MK1 to MK2, and they still made an enjoyable film that fleshes out the source material and as we all know would go on to influence it in a lot of ways. This is what MK looked like to us back in the 90s when we didn't really knew anything about it. 2021 should've known better, it has no excuse being so disjointed from over 20 years of MK legacy. And I can promise you'll never see Cole Young or Arcana in an official MK game lmao.
If Mehcad cared about actual racial representation he should probably call out the fact Liu Kang and Shang Tsung were portrayed by a Korean person rather than chinese or how they white washed kano when he was originally half japanese or that Kitana was portrayed by a Puerto Rican actress. Its really stupid thinking you're in the right by calling out whitewashing but not racial misrepresentation for all other roles, shit even Shao Khan and Quan Chi are asian names but the characters look more white and don't get me started with the voice acting from the last 2 decades
Only a person who truly loves mk would make so many videos about them. Calling out some bad things doesn't mean you love it any less. You beautiful reptilian man you

Story about this when I first watched it back in 1995: My cousin and I went and went to watch this on my 15th birthday back in 1995 during its opening week. Cinema was packed. Towards the end of the film, while Liu Kang and Shang Tsung are fighting the music builds and builds, up until the point where Liu blasts Shang off the edge of the platform into the spikes. The music accumulates until Shang falls, where the music stops. Suddenly someone in the audience lets out a MASSIVE fart. Everyone laughs hysterically. Will never forget that 😆 By the way, thanks for making this video Sonic. I LOLed SO hard while watching this. Needed it as I've been going through a rough patch in my life at the moment 🙏
I already loved this film before watching the video, but hearing your appreciation for Liu Kang’s character arc made me love it even more. This is without a doubt the best Mortal Kombat film and I doubt we’ll get a better one anytime soon given how terrible the more recent films have been sadly.
Kitana's flute scenes reminded me of Wonder Woman's Amazon yelling scenes in ZSJL where whenever the character is mentioned, those specific sounds start playing.
A bit of a shame about Art Lean though. He was originally supposed to have a bigger role, which would have made his death more significant, both to the audience and to the lead trio, but instead we ended up with what we did. Well, at least the novelization gave him the role he was meant to have, so there's that.

He literally cemented in the canon lore that Kano is Australian, which is damn cool. :)
And because of that Kano is more badass cause now he fights kaiju kangaroo and demon kualas yeah that is in Australian mythology
I still think Josh Lawson was better
Legendary.

I think it's because he's usually too Superman, "I must save the world and I must be the best" and all that. This really is the most humanized version of him that I can think of. Spot on.
In Scorpion's Revenge, he's okay, but very boring.

*[SPOILER WARNING FOR THE MK2021 AND MK1995 FILMS]*
Plus, this is a long rant.
(Excluding the DLC guest characters obviously)
Apparently, tech firm Akami reported that MK2021 was the 5th most pirated film of 2021 which is funny, because that's exactly how I watched it.

Cole was fine, not good, but fine. He was a victim of bad writing more than anything.

I feel you on that.

The reason this gem has stood the test of time is because it was made with the fans and love for the games in mind, I didn't even realise how much effort the actors and director put in.
And ,of course, it gave us one of the greatest theme songs of all time.

I Love the Fact that This Movie Created the Liu Kang and Kitana and Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade Romance.

Shang is obvious, but Shao must be Sidious.
Hearing Raiden immediately respond to "Haokah" without batting an eye made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Damn right, people who say mk is just gore or decry this movie for not having gore are nothing but (and I hate using the term) fake fans.
*_Mortal Kombat had a ninja with ice magic rip off someone's head and present it to the audience with it's spine still attached._*

In fact, about them, and also Goro and Reptile:
The 2021 movie versions of Goro and Reptile were IMO quite sub-par because they are done away immediately after their introduction. The 1995 movie is way better about it, driving up the tension first - first we hear of Goro, then we see his silhouette, then we finally see him in person, then he just murders people left and right, including the sacrificial lamb guy. So when Johnny gets to fight him, the tension is there, and while there's not much of a fight, we get, in a quick succession:
1. The nut punch
2. Raiden going "Yeah!.. Sorry"
3. "Those were 500$ sunglasses, asshole"
so as a kid I didn't even notice how brief it was.
There was violence in it though lmao n it was...glorious!

Both Reptile and Shang Tsung Screaming at that Horrible Reptilian Design is Funny as Hell that I can't Stop Laughing.

Story about this when I first watched it back in 1995:
My cousin and I went and went to watch this on my 15th birthday back in 1995 during its opening week. Will never forget that 😆
By the way, thanks for making this video Sonic.
