Had my 1975 sporty redone. I installed the heads and adjusted the valves. Front not firing. I know that the valves re knew and set in. Rear compression actually does a loud pop when I rotate engine on my finger. Front barely fizzles. I have electronics that fire both cylinders. I hear it snap on plug when it's on TDC. Has to be a cam off isn't it? Everything is new. It's making me wonder if I know what I'm doing. ( jet engine and FMC and GMC MECHANIC) "yep I used to know all"! It has to be the cam. I should of done it all by myself!!!
You're on the right track. If no compression on the front, not point in moving forward until you find it. Wrong cam timing could have bent a valve too....we can help if needed... If you didn't cut your old pushrods out with a pair of bolt cutters to replace with an adjustable set your going to have to remove your gas tank so you can remove your rocker box covers and remove the rocker arms to remove the rocker arms you have to remove the 2 bolts for each and push the rocker shift pin and that will let you push the lifter back up so you can install the cams . If you have the money and don't want to do all of that I would just cut out your stock pushrods and get an adjustable pushrod kit
I have a sportster, 2002, 1200, I'm thinking about replacing my Cam Cover. (It's all flaking the chrome) Does S&S make adjustable push rods for my 1200? I'm thinking that might be easier than pulling my rocker boxes. My rocker box's are not leaking, I don't want to disturb them. Harley Dealership Replaced the rocker gaskets Circa 2008. Haven't ridden It a Whole heck of a lot since then. (10,000 miles maybe) Do you happen to have a video like this, only on a 1200 Sportster, Frame mount motor. I think from research, 1995 to 2003 was the same Cam/gear cover. While I'm in there, (If I decide to change the Cover) Is there a good "Mild Cam" Set I can install That will give me some Low to mid performance. I have Vance and Hines Pipes, (Like long shots I think) and screaming Eagle Air filter. If I put a set of mild cams "Geared" for low to mid range, would I likely need to re jet? I'd want cams that will "Go right in" (Don't want to have to modify the case, like I saw on another video)

How do you get the cam cover back on? I was able to time the cams when I did my bike buy I could not get the cover back on to save my life, i could not get the cams to slide into the bushings in the cover, ended up ruining the bushings and had to take the motor to a shop to finish it up. Any tips?
+Bill Hill I'm betting you still had the pushrods in downloading the cams. Yes/no? If so you cannot get the cover back on if the cams are under tension.

Tdc at the front or back cylinder
What brand service manual are you using?
Great video, I just pulled my cam cover to replace the gasket but forgot to undo the bolt from the electric timing an it pulled the gears out with it. Is it possible to replace the gears with the push rods in place?

hey, did you get an answer for this? I did the EXACT same thing over the weekend.
i noticed that your manual showed that the gears also have marks on the back, mine are numbered the same but have a different alpha numeric code, does this matter and is the placement the same "4d , 2d etc. thanks
This video was super helpful in rebuilding my dads 1200 sporty, but it seems I may have cause another problem. Engine sounds like it’s misfiring, do the pistons need to be in a specific orientation when setting up the cams? Any help is much appreciated!
From other comments Shane has made, I'm pretty sure it matters. Shane is in Africa training students this summer. We are just the social media team. He plans on answering channel MEMBER questions each Sunday!

What position should the pistons be in since I am having piston to valve issues, already jacked up 3 sets of valves
Hi friend. Running down today’s list of comments! I try to answer when I've seen it before, but I don't recognize this one. I’m the Social Media Manager here. That’s a good question for Shane. He gets hundreds of requests a day and starts each day answering MEMBER or donation support questions first and then if there is time he will try to circle back before heading to the shop for customer work.

Great Job..
I can't get the cam back in due to the rollers on the end of the push rod, what do I do?
Thank you for the comment. See the link below for more help with your question. I have been banging my head against the wall thinking of ways for people to say thank you in an impactful way to help keep these videos coming. Here are few ways that many have found as a way to give back.

If you have the money and don't want to do all of that I would just cut out your stock pushrods and get an adjustable pushrod kit
does the oil pump have to be timed like on the old iron head sportsters?
Not on Sportsters newer than 1984.
I have a sportster, 2002, 1200, I'm thinking about replacing my Cam Cover. (It's all flaking the chrome)
Does S&S make adjustable push rods for my 1200?
I'm thinking that might be easier than pulling my rocker boxes. My rocker box's are not leaking, I don't want to disturb them.
Harley Dealership Replaced the rocker gaskets Circa 2008. Haven't ridden It a Whole heck of a lot since then. (10,000 miles maybe)
Do you happen to have a video like this, only on a 1200 Sportster, Frame mount motor.
Good job.

How do you get the cam cover back on? I was able to time the cams when I did my bike buy I could not get the cover back on to save my life, i could not get the cams to slide into the bushings in the cover, ended up ruining the bushings and had to take the motor to a shop to finish it up. Any tips?
+Bill Hill
I'm betting you still had the pushrods in downloading the cams. Yes/no? If so you cannot get the cover back on if the cams are under tension.
I had the pushrods in but I didnt have the top end back together so I dont think there was any tension on the cams.
Nice job--(as usual--you do a great job with these videos)-- Two questions, Is this a "Iron Head" motor?-- and is this motor found in a 2004 Sportster?--thank you
Why the line drawn through?
Iron heads weren’t in 2004s
