Little exploration tip I follow. Look for ringed gas giants that have moons. Look at those moons' orbital inclination. If it's over 10° then you can bet you'll find an interesting vista on there
I cant stand leaving things unscanned, so I have two modes of exploring: 1) neutronning via Spansh's plotter - this usually doesnt have much to find since the systems are discovered, but using EDMC and the canonn plugin I can see if some bodies havent been reported and scan them. 2) exploring - here I use EDMC and Observatory, observatory lets me know if the system is discovered, and what cool things are in-system of the bodies I've scanned. so most systems, when exploring, go like this: jump in aim away from star start scooping while holding discovery scanner to honk if it says 'system scan complete' jump as soon as away from star otherwise finish scooping, cruise short distance from star (so it isnt blocking your view) and then FSS everything. once everything is scanned, throttle up and start charging FSD to next destination (if you arent plotting using the in game plotter, plot your next jump in the map while scooping or flying away from star to get distance for FSS) check observatory and jump unless something cool catches your eye. in some systems, I will open the system map to check for neatly colored planets too, but that isnt as constant. EDIT: EDMC's canonn plugin also lets me detect trojans, which aren't in my observatory criteria, highly recommend both applications for any explorer out there Fly Dangerous o7
It also tells you how many bodies you discovered so you can skip the move to the right step. If a system scan shows 15 bodies and you only see 3 stars and 2 planets….do the math…
My OCD (I don’t really have it) makes me FSS everything. I can’t help it. I went 5000 ly from my starting point for engineering and came back with a hundred million in exploration data.
@@pepaigea I used to but then thought: “I can’t keep doing this, I’ll be here literally all day.” Now I’ve set stern limits. Only earth like, ammonias, terraformables, waters and interesting looking, landable, high metal content ones. And depending on what type, I won’t go over a 100k ls to do it.
Exploration is looking great in odyssey tbh. Currently exploring on PS4. I love the way neutron stars look, and the details you can see on planet surfaces.
A note about the system scanning (I don't have Odyssey, this is all Horizons): I hardly ever go into the system map on first jump in. I charge the D-Scanner and watch the info panel (top right) for the number of bodies returned. If I get the Betty telling me that "System Scan Complete" off the initial scan, I know that all the bodies returned are stars and not worth the time to go any further. On the other hand, if I don't get that statement, I'll move towards my next jump until my Surface Scanner says "Out of Range" of the star. At this point it's not very likely that the star will be blocking my FSS view of the orbital plane, and I'll drop speed and enter the FSS. In the FSS, I'll just look at the spectrum bar for any signals in the High Metal Content World, Earth Like, Ammonia, or Water World areas. I will fast scan for all the HMCW's in the system, I don't even wait for the geological survey to complete; I just want them registered on the system map. Then I'll scan for any planets in the other 3 categories mentioned if there's signals in that region. After this initial scan is done, I'll open the system map and go to the second tab that provides the planetary information. Here, you're looking for the line after the initial paragraph stating "This planet is a candidate for Terraforming". You want to note down all of these planets, because these are the ones you're going to want to map in addition to the Earth-Likes, Ammonia, and Water Worlds. After I'll mark down all the Terraformables, I'll go back into the FSS and scan for every remaining planet signal (asteroid belts and other signal sources aren't worth it) until Betty gives me the "System Scan Complete" message; this will give a decent bonus to the system value when you turn in the exploration data. Then I'm moving through the system mapping everything that's been marked valuable. Mapping all the Terraformable HMCWs, ELWs, Ammonia, and Water Worlds will significantly boost what you're paid for the System's data. Just my route from Cubeo to Colonia netted over 500 Mil using this technique. For those who use GameGlass, this process is even faster with the Exploration shard. Running that shard, you don't even have to open the system map to identify the terraformables. Every candidate gets a green "Terraformable" text on the planet's entry in the body list in the shard. FSS your HMC's, fast scroll through the list in GG, if you see anything green, then it's time to be more thorough with the system.
All great tips! To add onto above, I also engage D-Scanner right after entering the system when adjusting the flight path for fuel scooping. However I have this routine that after the D-scan completes I throttle to 0 and take a brief glance at FSS *while still scooping fuel* . 1-2 seconds is usually enough to assert if any bodies there are worth moving away from the star and scanning them with FSS. I then quit FSS and throttle back to 50-100% depending on the star size, orbiting it until the fuel scoop completes. If there's nothing interesting out there I may as well engage FSD right away.
@@krzysztof_jablonski for a smaller fuel scoop and gentler flying I can definitely see your method. I'm running a 7B scoop on an over-engineered variation of a Jumpaconda. By the time the D-scanner pings, I've already recovered about 3/4 of the fuel used in the jump, and I'm hugging the exclusion zone at full throttle. By the time the nose comes around the star and points to the jump reticule for the next system, I'm fully refueled and between 75 to 78% heat.
Honking tells you if there's planets in the system. Just honk, check number of stars in the left panel, if it's the same number the honk told you, go on to next system.

Please keep up the enjoying content. I still laugh when I think of Godwin Progress +++ Ontop of mount olympus lol.
So just got into E:D, playing on Xbox. So far love it! I am working on a few ships. My hopes are to collect them all. The most expensive ship I have is the Vulture so pretty much just starting out. I've made a bubble discovery that has helped. Idk if it works for day one players but will try it on another account to see if it is good and make a second channel and post them to it. Will be giving you a huge shout out because you're tips have greatly helped me out along with several other members of the community. Glad to be aboard, and please more content from E:D! :)
What you should do is pretend, in your head cannon, that your car is a spaceship and you’re doing supercruise jumps to a planet you’re about to explore. And the other vehicles are thargoids. Might make your commute more fun.
Very nice that u are scared of Neutron Stars because I'm not BUT there is one perticullar kind where I shit myself, it's the Neutron Stars in binary star systems orbiting the stars at close range, you know, the one kind that spins VERY I mean VERY fast... It scares me.

No they don't, it's still a buggy mess on PC. It's not ready for console yet. When FDev releases content for console they try to make it as much of a finished product as possible they use PC to bug test it

Early on i did too, first trip to colonia everything got DSS too. Even little ice moons.

when I explore I check the amount of bodies the d scan gives compared to how many stars I see to check if there are undiscovered planets around

What I do pop discovery scanner begin fuel scooping check system map for discoveries then cut engine and check fss for any earth like or water worlds

You just go to the system map and check them from here. I think there is some plugin you can use which tells you things like that as well
