    Brilliantly detailed video as usual! Much appreciated! I'm in the middle of converting mine. Just recently finished the front axle portion of it which also involved re-gearing to match the rear, replacing all new components: tie rods, ball joints, wheel hub assemblies, etc. Only thing I'm lacking right now is the front drive shaft. Once I acquire one for cheap, then on to the transmission swap.

    I want to thank you very much for putting this video out. I will be doing this exact thing soon.
    I have a 1994 Cherokee two door 2.5 liter, 5 speed that was to good to pass up on. I also have a 2000 Cherokee 4 door 4.0 liter (no good) auto that I was going to steal from for the 4X4 system, and possibly the transmission too.
    Hopefully it wont be too much trouble.
    I wish I can "like" this video each time I've watched it...3 times by now.
    Great channel and please keep it mostly XJ.

    • @WAEMIDIV
      @WAEMIDIV  4 місяці тому

      Don't get too excited, there's a whole lot of obstacles with the 2.5L, and the 4x4 Swap is not well documented at all for them. You won't be able to use a 4.0L transmission behind it, a 4.0L transfer case has 23 splines on the input shaft (2.5L transfer case has 21 splines) the driveshafts are all different lengths, and the front axle will require 4.10 gears (2.5L/ Manual) not 3.55 gears (4.0L/ auto) and even the 4wd linkage is different. Literally the only part you could use in a 1994 2.5L from a 2000 4.0L is the lever, and it wouldn't necessarily match the older interior.
      To put 4wd in a 4 cylinder XJ, you either need another 4 cylinder donor XJ (very hard to find in the US) or to just 4.0L swap it (very hard and extremely involved, I'm talking relocating engine mounts and replacing the entire drivetrain harness)

    After I lifted my 99 I developed that vibration. Got the hack and tap slip yoke eliminator kit and put a double cardon front drive shaft in the back. I suspect yours gained the extra pinion angle when you moved the output shaft back and used the shorter drive shaft. You could also get some four degree blocks for the rear leaf spring pads and get the angles to match a little bit better.

    • @WAEMIDIV
      @WAEMIDIV  Рік тому +1

      Yep that's what I'm gonna do. I have some shims in the mail right now, but in the long term I'm gonna replace my leaf springs, because they're twisted and deformed from axle wrap - and like you said, moving the output shaft rearward put the driveshaft in the vibration zone because of the already incorrect pinion angle that the longer, 2wd shaft was better able to dampen

    The Venezuela and Brazil versions of Xj did come with Dana 44 High Pinion on front axle (it’s listed in Factory service manual) And Currie makes a bolt on Dana 44. The Currie RockJock 44 does have some improvements to make it even more heavy duty, and they offer it for rear axle as well. But these are mostly for die hard 4 wheelers. Not sure if low pinion OEM version was made for those 2 countries.
    I have 93 with ax-15, which is last year of the internal clutch slave cylinder, and have been VERY tempted to swap over to the 94-01 external version (its direct swap, but have to change bell housing and a few other things). Supposedly not as good as the internal one but a LOT easier to change when slave cylinder goes bad.

    • @WAEMIDIV
      @WAEMIDIV  Рік тому +1

      by "not as good" people mean the clutch is like 2% heavier, it's really not a downgrade at all. I very much prefer the external cylinder to my internal cylinder Pugeoet in every possible regard
      I am familiar with the Dana 44, in some earlier XJ models here it was offered as a rear axle in the tow package, and the 97-06 Wrangler TJ could be optioned with it as a front axle as well; so the TJ Dana 44 will actually bolt into an XJ
      A reason I didn't mention the Dana 44 is because I already talked about it in the Front Axle video, and to save time, as I was focusing moreso on a "stock 4wd" swap instead of a "building MY Jeep specifically" sort of video here
      I do not believe the front Dana 44 ever had a low pinion
      But for me, the Dana 30 works just fine for what I need a stock Jeep to do. I'll have to wander over to South America and find an XJ someday just to see all the interesting foreign options they have

    Nice video, Waemid. 👍
    However, at 35:18 you used a lighter for a heat shrink butt connector. You need a heat gun.
    I've got a 10 year-old plug-in Milwaukee that's got two speeds. It's been a great tool.
    I've used at least four different cordless heat guns (I'm an industrial electrician, I have sometimes had to install heat shrink labels by the hundreds; most recently on a 150 MW solar field in WA state). They're okay, but nowhere near as powerful as my old Milwaukee.
    Point is: get a quality tool and it will last you at least a couple of decades. I've had mine for a decade, and I'm positive it will last for another 10 years, probably 20.

    • @WAEMIDIV
      @WAEMIDIV  Рік тому

      Yeah I do need to invest in a Heat gun, but I find I only crimp things occasionally, and the lighter has never failed me. It's kinda redneck-hillbilly but at the same time, not everyone has a heat gun, much like not everyone has access to a car lift. I try not to use specialty tools unless absolutely needed

    Congrats on your 4x4 conversion. Not sure you could have made this video any more comprehensive and entertaining if you tried. Well done. Now.....how can I get you to sell me the 2WD NV3550 you removed, so I can swap that into my '97 2WD AW4 Cherokee? Im having a heck of a time finding one..... 😊

    • @WAEMIDIV
      @WAEMIDIV  9 місяців тому +1

      Trouble is, the 2wd NV3550 is such a rare find, that not even the transmission expert (who knew EVERYTHING about the NV3550) had ever even heard of it. This guy has been building Jeep transmissions for 30+ something years and had never even heard of a 2wd NV3550.
      It was only ever in the 2000-2001 XJ, and the 2002-2004 KJ, in 2wd. That makes it exceptionally rare, so he bought it off me as a core along with the internals of the 4wd NV donor. The fried internals of the 4wd NV are now in a bucket with an empty 2wd NV case in his garage, and will likely stay there for a long time
      You'd be much better off finding an AX-15, even in 2wd, as the shift lever and all that are also much more common. I have a video on the manual swap too

    • @GB-RT-CS-C4
      @GB-RT-CS-C4 9 місяців тому

      @@WAEMIDIV Yup, I've already watched it. I've done this swap before, just not on a jeep. I've also looked into the NSG370 swap for my XJ, but I'm not sure thats where I want to be. I need to do more homework. Had no idea that the 3550 was in the early Liberty, that might be a good donor too. Any way you cut it, these parts are becoming exceedingly hard to find. Thanks for the reply 👍

      Transmission: no
      Transfer case: yes
      Driveshafts: yes
      Front axle: no
      Rear axle: yes

    • @WAEMIDIV
      @WAEMIDIV  Рік тому

      @charlesmaxey9165 If you really want to swap the entire engine over, that'd have to involve all of the electronics, which are different in 96 than 97, and different in 97 than 98-99, and different than 00-01. You'd be converting a coil rail, California Emissions, horseshoe intake, 0331 head engine with a different belt routing into a distributor, single manifold, boxy intake, 0630 head engine that technically makes less power, and you have to change the ECU to get it to run, which inherently means you have to change the engine wiring harness (or custom your way through it all) which also means you'd have to change your interior harness to get the guages, switches, Dome lights, radio etc. to work... it's a damn mess. Don't swap the engine or you'll be at it for years.
      You can Rewire the connectors on a 96 AW4 to make it work in an 01
      You can modify your exhaust manifold to get a 96 Front Axle to fit in an 01
      You can buy a different trim bezel for $15 on ebay to work in your 01
      or you could swap the entire drivetrain into a different body, but that's your call man

    • @charlesmaxey9165
      @charlesmaxey9165 Рік тому

      That's what I'm planning. I got rear and front axle and transmission with transfer case on it. So all I would have to do is just change connectors on transmission? I was talking about rebuilding the other engine and basically just use the block in the event transmission wouldn't bolt up to 01 engine

    • @WAEMIDIV
      @WAEMIDIV  Рік тому

      @charlesmaxey9165 The engine block is not the problem, they never changed the transmission bolt pattern all the way from 1987 - 2006. It's the electronics that are different.
      Now I'm not an automatic expert, but from what I understand, The 97- AW4 has 1 speed sensor, where the 98+ AW4 has 2. This means the TCM will need/ have different inputs, and require different wiring. You will need to either repin or splice the connectors to make it work, I know it's possible because people have done it before, I'm sure there's an old forum somewhere.
      by "bolt on" I mean "require absolutely no modification whatsoever", not necessarily "physically connect to" English is weird
      The high pinion Dana 30 will leave your front driveshaft contacting the exhaust, so that's something else you have to worry about too
