Hi guys! Yes, technically this was not their first single this but was what set them on the road to international fame!! Thanks so much for the reaction. I would place it in the pop/rock genre. Oh edited to add, that ABBA's Gold album has just spent the most time in the UK charts of any album of all time, longer than Queen and anyone else. 1,000 weeks, that is incredible!!
How are you? So nice to see you react to ABBA songs I tell you that british people loves ABBA from their victory in Eurovision'74 in Brighton with this iconic "Waterloo" ABBA have greatest succes in U.K. They have nine singles #1 ("Waterloo" was their first #1) and nine albums #1 in UK Official Charts and several Top 10 an a specialy row of 18 singles Top 10 consecutives and in the end of their American and Europe Tour in 1979 , at Wembley Arena in London, the encore was... Dancing Queen & Waterloo for next reactions I suggest the ballads folk Fernando (1976) Chiquitita (1979) these are the most biggest worldwide ABBA hits (only behind Dancing Queen)
Please react to ABBA's: 1. Move On 2. One Man One Woman 3. Soldiers 4. Slipping through my fingers 5. Like an Angel Passing Through My Room 6. Does your mother know 7. He's your brother (Australia live 77) 8. Why did it have to be me (Australia live 77)
Hello, nice to see you again with reactions to more ABBA songs "Waterloo" is one of my favorites, and is in my Top 5 of all ABBA songs (with S.O.S. , Dancing Queen, Chiquitita & The winner takes it all) And yes, I think that is the song that change history, not only for ABBA, for Sweden and Eurovision too It was the song that They wrote especially to participate in the prestigious Eurovision Song Contest By the rules of the competition the songs could not exceed 3 minutes and ABBA made a masterpiece! first They sing it in Swedish, for the local tie in Sweden (February 1974) They finally sing it in English in the final held in England (April 1974) before 16 interpreters and songs from all over Europe. it's a link to that historic moment: ua-cam.com/video/Vp1_OKawHYw/v-deo.html "Waterloo" and ABBA win Eurovision for the first time for Sweden It will be Their first big global success: #1 in UK and half Europe (also South Africa), and Top 10 in U.S., Canada, Australia , New Zealand and the rest of Europe ABBA recording "Waterloo" in swedish, english, german and french Several years later, in 2005, to the 50th Eurovision anniversary "Waterloo" was chosen the best song in all the history of Eurovisión For a new reaction I suggest: "Chiquitita" (1979) specialy when ABBA premier these for the Concert to UNICEF (and donated royalties) for the greatest succes "Chiquitita" was recording in spanish too All these songs of my Top 5 and much more was included in Their recopilation album GOLD that last week just arrives to 1000 weeks at Top 100 in UK Official Charts (first group singer or artist to do it) I hope you have a nice weekend Kind regards from Buenos Aires Argentina South América
Waterloo is a place where Napoleon Bonaparte first experienced defeat in battle thats why when ABBA competed in Eurovision they wore outfits common during the time of The French Revolution
Definitely not Europop. Not sure what genre it is… pop rock maybe? Have you listened to ABBA’s Knowing Me Knowing You yet? It’s wonderful. Waterloo was no 1 in the U.K. Abba’s was the first Eurovision winning song (the only one??) to go top 10 in the US apparently.
The songs had to be short, after all Eurovision is a TV show and a contest not a "weekend festival" But after adding many new states, from Eastern Europe, there is a qualification round during the week and then a Final nxt weekend. Around 40 countries participate now, to many to have in one go. they had Ring Ring the year before, #3 in the Swedish Qualif. ( But that was before they became ABBA, the artist was Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Frida)
Thank you guys for another Abba reaction! I always feels like this is very different to Abba's later stuff. My favourite Abba song is SOS which was about a year after this.
I think "Ring Ring" came out before this one. They tried to got it in 1973 Eurovision but didn't make it out of Sweden, but had some success with it. But yeah this was the big breakout. I like "Honey Honey" off this album better. But that's just me.
Ah guys. I fell in love with the band when seeing this at Eurovision in 1974 and 47 years later that love for them is still as strong. You can tell Kieron absolutely hates it though lol. Thanks for the review, you are always honest. You're still the best around at this.
React to ABBA's lush "My love, my life". And to one of their earlier works "Dance (while the music still goes on)" which again marries nostalgic or even melancholic lyrics with beautiful uplifting melody.
They we're still finding their way & carving out their own Identity at that time. Waterloo isn't one of their best but it's good enough, it was good enough to win Eurovision and get their name out there. After a couple more lesser successful singles (which still charted in The UK) they bounced back with SOS and that was It, "ABBA had arrived" & from then on It was just hit after hit after hit.
Ha Ha your faces are a picture through that! You have to remember this was 47 years ago. The sound is based on Rock N Roll and the arrangement on Phil Spectors wall of sound. At the time the UK was very in vogue musically with glam rock so elements of that are here too. This was the first time Sweden won the Eurovision Song Contest and although throughout their 10 Years together ABBA were mocked and described by the music press as cheesey and throwaway, that all changed in the 90's when their body of work took on a whole new life. It should also be noted all four members of the group had estabihsed solo careers from the 60's. Bjorn the lyricist in a folk/skiffle band, Benny the musical dynamo in Swedens biggest rock n roll band of the 60's and Agnetha and Frida (Anni-Frid) as solo singers in dance bands before begining as solo artists in 67. So far the oldest song from ABBA you've reacted to is SOS from 1975 so, after listening to later progressions like Eagle, The Visitors, Lay All Your Love On Me and The Day Before You Came poor old Waterloo probably sounds a little twee and lightweight it was a huge global hit going to number 1 in at least a dozen countries, number 6 in America and being recorded in 4 different languages. If you like darker ABBA stick with later albums...but you'll miss some gems.
I agree, not my favorite and doesn't hold up to their future hits. But it launched them so we have to appreciate that because without it we would probably have never heard about them. After Waterloo, they only got better and better!
This song is fun ! Kieron welcome home buddy ! It's time for some LYNYRD SKYNYRD !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many , many great songs ! Also good luck to ENGLAND on Sunday !! s CLAPTON IS GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be honest I prefer most of the other songs on the Waterloo album. It is an attention grabbing song, which is what they needed for Eurovision, but I don't think they had real quality unitl they came out with Mamma Mia and SOS in 1975.
This was huge when it first came out. The Name Of The Game is a brilliant one from Abba. Great intro, harmonies and acoustic guitar.
I agree: The Name of the Game is awesome. But Knowing Me Knowing You is equally great. I don't know about Waterloo though :-)
@@nielsulriksrensen9818 You're right, Knowing Me Knowing you is definately on a par with The Name Of The Game - both brilliant songs.
Sounds like we'll have to check a few of those out!

it's glam rock style

SOS has been our favourite ABBA song to react to so far. Went into it completely unexpected!
Yes that's a great reaction video
Please react to I`m a marionette and Like an angel passing through my room. Fantastic songs.
very amazing how the made a very good song with one of the bloodiest battles of the napoleonic wars.
I think "Ring Ring" came out before this one. They tried to got it in 1973 Eurovision but didn't make it out of Sweden, but had some success with it. But yeah this was the big breakout. I like "Honey Honey" off this album better. But that's just me.
Best Abba - name of the game . This is more downbeat. Better than most of the other abba tracks you have played
Ah guys. I fell in love with the band when seeing this at Eurovision in 1974 and 47 years later that love for them is still as strong. You can tell Kieron absolutely hates it though lol. Thanks for the review, you are always honest. You're still the best around at this.
Refreshing honesty. It's like I'm being invited around to mates place. There are darker songs
React to ABBA's lush "My love, my life". And to one of their earlier works "Dance (while the music still goes on)" which again marries nostalgic or even melancholic lyrics with beautiful uplifting melody.

The Eurovision version would've been a better piece to react to. Or any of the live versions of this masterpiece for that matter.
Yeahh we tried reacting to the eurovision performance but youtube wouldn't allow us to upload annoyingly!

More like glam rock than europop
LYNYRD SKYNYRD ( WHISKEY ROCK-A- ROLLER ) WATERLOO was a pretty cool song ! I have to give it to ABBA ! PEACE !
Please listen to "Move On" a classic from ABBA that was never released as a single.
You should listen to My Mama said by them, it's so so very different sound.
I agree, not my favorite and doesn't hold up to their future hits. But it launched them so we have to appreciate that because without it we would probably have never heard about them. After Waterloo, they only got better and better!

Cheers mate good to be back and a great suggestion. 🏴🏴🏴
Planet P Project/Why Me and the song called Armageddon.
Check out Muriel’s wedding Waterloo

_My mama said_ and _Disillusion_ are nice early songs, to me, although not very Abbaesque.
I don't agree with You
"Waterloo" is a fantastic song , a masterpiece under three minutes , in my Top 10 of all ABBA history
Hello guys
Hi!
Its not a bad song but somehow it didnt age that well. Typical 70’s song. Try winner takes it all. The jewel in the crown !
They did it long time ago
Ring Ring is better I think!
Got zero points from our friends in England.
Probably why we get 0 now... 😂😂😅
