What a beautiful surprise to see you with this reaction
I am one of this send You this request and I'm so glad to see it
Is that this is very special
It's "Waterloo" in Eurovision and in England
Here is the birth of the glorious legend of ABBA
ABBA remember is an acróstic with the initials of the first name of each members:
    Agnetha Fälkstog (blonde singer)
    Björn Ulveaus (guitar and songwriter)
    Benny Andersson (pianist and songwriter)
    Anni Frida Lyngstad (brunette singer)
    ABBA was two couples
    Agnetha & Björn
    Anni Frida & Benny
Some context of Eurovision, annual contest since 1956
    The whole world is televised
Each country cannot vote for the song that represents it
That year there were 10 juries per country and voting was by telephone or satellite
The songs could not be longer than three minutes
It was sung in the local language, but a modification from the previous year allowed singing in any language
The last six winners had been female soloists
    Sweden had never stood out
Some countries (like Sweden) had a previous contest to choose their representative
All this was known to the ABBA manager, who sought to reach Eurovision as a launching pad
He had tried the year before, but the song "Ring Ring" came third in the Swedish qualifier and failed to qualify.
ABBA wavered between the glam rock "Waterloo" and the ballad "Hasta Mañana" with leading voice Agnetha
"Waterloo" was chosen because it wanted to give the impact of the two girls together leading the vocalization
"Waterloo" in Swedish won the Swedish tie very well, and won the right to represent Sweden in England
For the final a change was made
    ABBA sang "Waterloo" in English
He wore the same iconic special costumes (including the conductor), and re-adapted his choreography to draw more attention from viewers and jurors.
ABBA were the ones that stood out because the girls came running towards the stage (all the other interpreters started in a fixed position) and had a happy and explosive interpretation that went beyond the screens
ABBA went not only to compete but also to give a show
ABBA deservedly won, still with 0 votes from England, and repeat their performance, but now as winners
That triumph opened the doors to all of Europe,
"Waterloo" within a few weeks was his first #1 in England and half Europe and even in South Africa, and reached #6 in the U.S. and #4 in Australia and several Top 10 in other countries
That is why this presentation is the most important of ABBA, and the most important act in all the Eurovision Song Contest.
(In 2005 "Waterloo" was chosen as the best song in the 50 years of Eurovision, and very little in another poll was ratified the validity and leadership of "Waterloo" and ABBA in the entire history of Eurovision)
Later, it was difficult to repeat that success (there was like a curse that he considered ephemeral and of a single success to the winners of the Contest)
just a year and a half later "S.O.S." It repositions them at #6 in the UK and #15 in the U.S., and six #1 in several countries,
and there yes, ABBA's sweeping machine extends success after success until almost They end as a group
Thank you very much again for this beautiful surprise
Now you too will understand better the legacy and strength of ABBA's songs, everything has its origin on this night of April 6, 1974
(the day after Agnetha's 24th birthday)
GOD bless you and stay safe
    My best regards from
    Buenos Aires Argentina

What a great pleasure to see you in this new video
This one is very special, because it reflects the great historical success of ABBA's participation (and triumph) in the Eurovision Competition and the beginning of its shocking chain of worldwide successes.
    clarifications about the video:
ABBA participated in the eighth shift (among 17 countries)
the English announcer was fascinated with the previous one (Yugoslavia)
and when he had to introduce ABBA (and Sweden) he did it with some ignorance (he confuses the names of the boys)
and with a very sexist and macho comment (he says that if the juries were men they would have many votes)
But he was surprised by the appearance of the conductor dressed as Napoleon (it was part of the impact strategy devised by the ABBA manager) and he was tempted to laugh when announcing the start of the performance
(I think he lost his English composure thinking that these unknown Swedes could ruin the festival and its tradition)
In reality, some of this so feared came true, but for the better
ABBA went against the whole story and made His story, and changed the Eurovision story too
Waterloo, a powerful faith rock song, triumphs over the most classic songs
ABBA, an unusual Swedish group, triumphs with a memorable performance
Waterloo, the symbol of the defeat and end of Napoleon before the Anglo-Prussian troops, here became the first victory of Sweden and the beginning of the era of ABBA and its musical conquest of the British empire
I wanted to leave you this comment now because of certain confusion generated by the British presenter, (who also stayed in the story ha)
Separately I will make you another about your excellent reaction

"Nelson" at Waterloo!!!! Nelson was an admiral, a sailor, why would he be present at a land battle except in spirit as he would have long ago been preserved in rum. Consider Wellington, like the gumboot, and Blucher, as they are actually army generals.

Every time I hear an ABBA song I realise I just love their music. I used to listen to their songs because my parents had some vinyls and sometimes listen to them. And the music always made me wanna dance and sing along even if back then I didn't understand a word of english. I just loved the melody and only same years later I would see who they were and that they are sweedish.
Those harmonies, such beautiful harmonies, they are musiacl genius.

I like what you said a bout Benny as he was often regarded as the quite one of the group. The girls got all the ttention and becasue of his skills with business and language Bjorn was often the spokeman. True story that bares out Benny was the playful one. They had a photo shoot with each band member standing with a six foot letter of their initial. Benny getting bored turned his B the wrong way round so the two were back to back. Hence the logo used all all their records etc after that was born. He was original with a swedish rock group similar to the Rolling Stones but married early and had two children which cause friction withing the group as the other guys just had girl friend or enjoying being rock stars.

Yes, it is apparently too hard to say Agneta so Anna is used instead.
And "Born"... they were completely off there, first off, they switched the guys around, Benny was first (as you know),
Björn rimes with earn (sort of), so bj-earn... it's the dots over the o that changes the sound.
Agneta is a completely different problem, I think it's partly the spelling that makes it hard to say...
... the g is like the ng in sing, the e is not like in "me" it's more like the e in "net", like "Ang-net-a".
    Well, I tried ... :)

First of all, the UK TV presenter got their names mixed up, or perhaps his script was written to a different clip. At 2:05 we see from left to right Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agneta Fältskog & Björn Ulveaus, but I noticed later that you've managed to see through his mistake :)
The second thing I'd like to mention is that thing you were talking abut when the base line goes down, and the melody goes up. It's an old trick that have been used since at least the 17th century to make music more interesting. It's musicology term is *_contrary motion._* You can hear good examples of it in _Tomaso Albinoni's - Adagio_ ua-cam.com/video/_eLU5W1vc8Y/v-deo.html or in modern music in f.ex. _"Go West"_ by Pet Shop Boys ua-cam.com/video/LNBjMRvOB5M/v-deo.html

“Countdown was essential to us,” Andersson admits. “That's when it really started to happen. After we won the Eurovision Song Contest and had a big hit with Waterloo all over the world, then nothing happened, like often is the way with Eurovision Song Contest contenders. We worked in England and they said, ‘Well not to worry,” he grumbles at the memory. “So from sending us big limousines in the Waterloo period, the cars got smaller and smaller and we had a Volkswagen bus by the end!

Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid (Frida) are A.B.B.A. Anyone who know's ABBA's music well will already know some of their best work is tucked away on their 8 original albums. One of those groups that virtually every album track could have been a single. By the way, did you know the UK didn't give ABBA a single point at the 1974 Eurovision.

The last good thing to come out of Eurovision. Amazingly they beat out Olivia Newton John who many thought was a shoe in to win singing for England. It was her then everyone else. Had ABBA lost history probably changes and ABBA would never come to be.

    • @havensmm9308
      @havensmm9308 3 роки тому +1

Yep, Olivia was singing a song voted on by the UK public, a very old fashioned polka-type song which she didn't really care for. The ballad she really liked "Angel Eyes" came in second. She said that it was obvious to all of the performers during rehearsals that ABBA would win because they were so fresh, creative and talented. ONJ and Frida, I believe, became very good friends. And Olivia invited ABBA on her TV special in 1978, giving ABBA their first prime time appearance in the US. Btw, I have listened to all of the 6 songs that the UK voted on and Angel Eyes was definitely the best. If that had won, she may have come in 2nd to ABBA as I don't think anyone would have beat them.
