This is a solo run of the Legend of Dragoon PS4/PS5 re-release with Shana only. No Dart, no Lavitz, no Kongol, no Meru, no lavitz, no rose, no dragoon.
Challenge Rules (replace Shana with Miranda when applicable):
1. When Shana is allowed in the party, she must be in the party.
2. Only Shana can do damage to enemies. The only exception to this is if an enemy is mathematically unable to kill one of Shana's allies and the run command is disabled.
3. All buffs placed on Shana by other teammates must expire before she can act. She may, however, buff herself.
4. No dragoon form.
5. Shana may not do damage to any enemies while her allies are alive. This ensures that she is truly defeating all enemies alone, without any meat shields to help her.
6. When Shana is not able to be in the party, anything goes.

This is why i said Shana is S tier in a normal game, she is literally the highest damage dealer in the game. Chances of her dying is low when you have party members soaking damage for her and supporting her. Most people don't use her cause she is weak in the first half of disk 1. But her damage grow exponentially after that especially when you start giving her good equips.
Imo the best team in the game is Dart/Shana/Meru. You'll be stealing turns in every battle, Shana does most of the damage and in huge burst, killing minor enemies and body parts real fast. Meru is for her speed and good physical damage cleaning up whatever little that remains. Dart is trash you have to use, so he is mostly a support role using buff and debuff items.
Dragoon mode is mostly useless once you get good with additions and attack item mashing.
I cant wait to see Kongol. My favorite of the dragoons... hes definitely going into F.
Actually you can’t beat the game with just Shanna because Shanna leaves the team lol 😂

Darn Melba Sauce over here taking an eternity to die. Honestly the solo run I think will cause the most emotional damage is the Lavitz run. Having access to Rose Storm but not being able to use it sounds like it might transcend into causing physical pain.

LoD has always been near and dear to my heart. I've really been enjoying your LoD content and other challenges. Looking forward to the Kongol run, he was always constant in my party

Y'know, in all honesty I would say we have to take this challenge a step further to discern actual character strength. Once you finish the run for each character, take them back and solo challenge Faust 😋
Could’ve farmed a few more magical items from enemies on the moon, but maybe you could do that with Meru.
I can only imagine how tedious the ending fight was. Might have actually broken me if I tried it.
My favorite challenge is as follows:
No item shops
No weapon shops
No defending
No repeat items
This challenge makes it actually exciting to find basic items and equipment such as potions and burn outs, and more or less forces you to use every party member so as to save on your now precious healing items. Repeat items can be discarded, so the item limit isn't as much of an issue as it usually is. Can optionally add "no inns / no grinding / starting equipment only" if you need more of a challenge. Would enjoy seeing an attempt at this some day, not sure how hard Faust would be though. Keep up the great work!
This is surprisingly a great series lol. The Rose tier makes me cry though 😢
Reminds me of the video someone did where it was a challenge run can you beat legend of dragoon using only items. You can imagine Shana was a key component.
Also in that same video I ended up learning a few things I didn't realized when I played the game 2 decades ago; such as optional super bosses.
Miranda is my favorite character. When I got this game as a kid I was struggling with Melbu Frama, but then I changed my character for Hachel and Miranda and DESTROYED him

I had a feeling this would be coming soon after the Dart vid. About to watch it but my guess is "Easy at the beginning, incredibly hard in late disc 2/all disc 3, and for some reason gets easy again in disc 4, especially the last few bosses."
Lets see how close I am...
Not close actually, its difficult at the beginning because Shana's stats are quite bad and most of the big damage from enemies are physical, but in early mid game onwards Shana's gets exponential growth, she melts most if not all bosses easily. The very last boss Melbu Frahma is not hard but becomes really tedious to kill because it has so much HP its hard finish it with the limited amount of magic attack items in your inventory and so you have to resort to normal attacks.
Shana solo basically is a little hard for the first half of disk 1, but after that it starts getting easier and easier.
I cant wait to see a solo kongol run! He wont make it without damage being distributed amongst the party.
The knights are definitely going to be a problem with his poor aoe and slow speed. Any boss that uses magic attacks will be a problem (so most of the later ones iirc) but he looks awesome, so it will be worth it.
That's what i think too, most of the biggest damage in mid to late game from the enemies are magical damage. Kongol's high HP means nothing at all with his terrible magic defense and slow af speed. I suspect the run will hit many difficult obstacles like Lenus and will probably end with Grand Jewel. Bandit ring can help with his slow speed but since its a solo battle, he will have to swap for some status preventing ring and then he's back to square one.
We shall combine Shana and Mirandas name and call her Shananda

@tantacles I mean. They're meatshields until they die. Which is usually what causes speedruns to die, the bosses not hitting the meatshields.
Right, and I just let them die BEFORE Shana does damage. Meaning it’s minus two meat shields.
I wasn't at all surprised that you could beat the game with only Dart, but i am genuinely surprised that it can be done with Shana/Miranda

I feel like they increased the drop rate for the rare items, because on my latest play through I've managed to pick up all of them from Disc 1 enemies so far.
Makes me wonder. Maybe Kongol will be better on a solo run. He doesn't have the problem with being reliant on attack items.

This game is wonderful. Great characters, fun fighting system, amazing story and fantastic music!
How about doing a ol' Grandad aka Haschel run? I think his speed and stats would help make it a bit smoother. Also the fact him with Bandit's ring and shoes would give him 100 speed, giving him a big chance of attacking twice in a row.

you should mod that game when you get to runs like Meru and Kongol so that they are always in the party. it would be kinda boring to do half the game normally

May I suggest a run through with the characters original weapons, armor, etc? Can't equip/upgrade them with new items! Im doing that now and lemme tell ya... its challenging
This and a similar video (where they ran through the game using only Attack Items for damage) are why I've changed my stance from hating Shana/Miranda to using them in my team at all times. No item is a wasted slot when they can wipe a boss off the face of the earth with a couple attack items and good button mashing!
also it IS possible to kill the final boss with only attack items! it just requires more attack items than you probably had at the end, more Magic on Miranda, some great button mashing...... and at least one teammate to use Power Up on Miranda to amp up her first 3 attack items lol

Whichever the next solo challenge run edit a Smoothie and Magazine on a downed Dart whenever he's in a boss fight to steal the final kill.

After replaying it, I remembered how much of a sexist trope Shana is. She’s ALWAYS sick/captured/having a magic breakdown. No good reason a character like Shana should’ve existed in a post-Ayla world.

Watson and Crick didnt steal Rosalinds work. Rosalind could not see her research as breakthrough but they did. They discovered the idea per her research.

@@tantacles Watson wrote a book that indicated Rosalinds contributions. She wouldnt have gotten credit if Watson didnt mention it. Unfortunely, she did not reach the conclusion sooner.
Hmm... so here is a question. Why is Dart the one dealing the final blow on Doel and not oh I don't know Albert? Seems like he should be the one to do it.
Also are the boys stealing her kills or is Shana letting them take those final blows so they feel like they are contributing?

Miranda lets him do it because she is salty that you put Shana's name in the title and not hers
Is there some mod that allows you to switch Dart with another character battle? Because I would love to see this done with every character, but Rose, Haschel and especially Meru and Kongol come later then I personally feel would work out well.
Also the answer is no no you can not beat the game with only Shana. Nor Lavitz. Anyone who has played the game knows why.

You ask if there's a mod to swap out dart but ignore that there's a mod/cheat that let's you have shana and lavitz the whole game.
Well yeah. Shana is worst girl so her being replaced is fine. Meanwhile Lavitz needs his beauty sleep and we must be respectful of that
yes there is mods that allows that and its not hard to find the one I know allow you to have every char at lvl 1 but the char from rose to kongol will have dart basic equipment so weapon wise it's a bit tragic for some because they lose access to the weapon they would start with so you need to grind for one or wait for even later to get a weapon from a shop. Also everytime there is a change to the party you need to place back that char in the party to have access to it again its a bit annoying but doable. Last thing is battle like the hoax one I think its impossible to swap any char so you are stuck with dart and lavitz because of how the game work.
You should've seen Casposaurus' items-only run before attempting this...

so, im a little special, (Dumb and can't understand guides well) but where do you actually go after Lavitz get's OKO'ed by loyd? Game auto takes you to celes, And i didn't exactly pay attention to the dialog to know where to go next, is it actually the black palace? (That's where i headed, after noticing the path open up, but i feel like its the wrong location, LOL)

I actually have a question about the magic items that i can't recall the answer on. Does the item gain power if used by the character with the matching element type, i.e. shana using a light spell or meru using a water spell, or is it based purely on the magic attack stat, weakness of enemy to element , and multiplier of spell if it has it?
No STAB bonus, sadly.

just a question, but are you interested in just having the one character from the start? No need to wait around for others to die or to unlock the character, making it possible for haschel, kongol or meru runs
In general, yes. For this series, no
@@tantacles fair enough, emulation makes it real easy with the dragoon modifier, which also adds hard+hell modes and super bosses. Worth a shot. Theres also the severed chains build out there if the legality of emulation is questionable
The spirit of this challenge is essentially - if the character got all the information from everyone else at their point of joining, do they need anyone else?

Can you beat the game using the character every speed runner uses?? Probably.
BUT… Without meat shields?
When using magic items. You could get a controller with a turbo function. This allows you to get the percentage up to %240 easily. I'm unsure if they make them for the PS4/5 but they most definitely make them for the PS3. It makes using magic items easy and slightly more powerful.

Wow, I applaud all of this, and to make all of it harder. You even took out the ability to use your dragon spells. Looking forward to the next single character play through.

Actually dragoon mode is kinda useless if you can master additions and button mashing. Final additions and attack items mashed above 220% easily do more damage than Dragoon addition and magic. Dragoon mode are great for casual players since its easy to use and do decent damage without the need for high execution skills. But most veteran players especially speed runners almost never use dragoon mode. I personally only use it to remove negative status effect for free when i don't have purifiers in my inventory.
As a point of clarification, what I meant was for the final boss, and throughout the game actually, Dragoon Spells, are something that you don’t have to worry about a 36 item restriction, you can recover MP during battle with particular accessories, and or armor. Useful in a single character challenge, although I concede the point of Dragoon transformations not being of much help to anyone playing a speed run…but neither would a solo character challenge, considering the amount of extra time BURNED killing off your other party members.

After re-watching this, I honestly wouldn't have blamed you if when you ran out of attack items that you allowed yourself the use of dragoon on melbu. If only to speed up the end. You already proved he couldn't kill you, it just takes so long without magic.

Just curious how many attack items did you go into that final battle with her?
Also completely off of this fight, on the ghost ship I think the rewind function from the ps5 kinda can cheat that mini game if when it's done it doesn't reset the the numbers like it does if you reload the game naturally.

Because she has to use physical attacks to get dragoon levels and I avoided using physical attacks because they’re SUPER weak

🤔 I'd hesitate to say shana is op. Once she out levels the content, maybe? Her speed and item attack spam could work but you could say the same for Meru. And you could do similar, to some extent, with Haschel(and Dart).
