Moving to Puglia in Southern Italy, I knew I had all kind of delicious food to look forward to. When our pantry and fridge became empty, I decided to do a video of my GROCERY HAUL! (I figured, what would a UA-camr do in this situation?! Ha).

This was produced during the covid pandemic restrictions imposed as Italy tries to reduce the spread of coronavirus.
THANK TO YOU ALL (especially on Instagram) for suggesting so many incredible, delicious things that have already become staples in our household. Let me know what else I should try (in the comments below or @qkatie on Instagram)!
This is just PART I ... here's PART II: • GROCERY HAUL IN ITALY ...

    My grandmother comes from Puglia.
I'm living in the UK now, but miss Italy (and in the context of this video, Italian supermarkets!). Can't wait to get back to Rome when the current situation has eased a bit. :)

This is such a cool video! I'm a grocery shopping nerd. One of my favourite parts about travelling is going to different grocery stores and checking things out. I was actually supposed to go to Italy again this Spring, which won't be happening anymore. I have such an itch to travel. Thanks for making this video- it's the closest thing we have to travelling these days! Would love to see more videos like this!

As spaghetti You could try La Molisana - Le integrali - spaghetto quadrato n° 1 (square shaped spaghetto, whole wheat).
As rice You could get riso Venere integrale (Gallo or another brand) that is a black rice.

Nowadays even in south italy they use the stables of the north. For example I know many people from Campania who loves tortellini. Many people from Puglia and Calabria who loves trenette with pesto or tagliatelle alla bolognese. I also know many people from the south who adore bresaola, aceto balsamico, cotechino, mortadella, piadina romagnola, gorgonzola, mascarpone all products from the north. Also I know many people from south who make polents regularly in the winter season.

I hope you can travel to the north once this pandemic will end, and try all the different kind of flours used for polenta.
In a very specific part of Lombardia the use buckwheat flour to make pasta and polenta (and obviously many other delicious dishese).
Also that kind of polenta can be mixed with cheese and butter to create a one-of-a-kind dish (in the past was this high energy dish that should get your through the whole day on the alpine pasture)

Shopping for local food (meaning at butcher shops, farmers markets, greengrocers and seafood markets) is extremely fun for me because of I love hunting for culinary treasures that lives within the markets and I'm one of those people who believes fresh food, the better. That's why I always say make friends with your local butchers, farmers and fishmongers because they'll: keep you updated on what they sell, set something aside for you when you call ahead of time and give you great recommendations for when you're shopping.

to make a great risotto you had to chose Carnaroli Rice and remember not stir the rice, as matter of fact my grandfather said "il riso nasce nell'acqua e muore nel vino, non vive" (rice born on water and died on wine, it don't live")...
