American here. We often shop at M & S when in London because we stay for 1-2 weeks at a time and save money by eating from grocery stores or small shops versus restaurants, plus it’s healthier. We enjoy the cultural experience of shopping there too. Food is 10-30% higher here and in the US it’s often taxed 6-10%, varies by state. Items like those bakery goods, cheese trays, etc. are convenient for tourists. Crossing my fingers that your new Labor government will work to lower your energy costs! Thanks for taking us shopping, Hannah!!

@@georgedyson9754M&S is UK's most expensive food store in the UK (delis/specialty stores aside). Cooking from scratch you wouldn't go to M&S as most of the food is pre-prepared - and generally tasty (their curries are especially good!). This store, centre of London, great place to buy a bite to eat when travelling in London. Other supermarkets are way cheaper - Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and Sainsbury's and Tesco low cost ranges (The small 'metro' versions in city centres are pricier). My husband was in Canada in Aug and found prices higher in regular supermarkets (he went to Sobeys, food basics and Fortinos and I think Loblaws). He said the in season corn, peaches and tomatoes (all awesome obvs) were cheaper but the prices in Canada for cheese, high fat butter and cream and all dairy were way higher .... except the more pre-prepared dairy eg cheese slices and ice cream. However, UK prices for basic foods, housing and energy have gone up so much that many are struggling. 🙏That is not the case in Canada.

As you’ve mentioned Hannah, many of us viewers are amazed at the selection of prepared and semi-prepared foods in UK supermarkets. Would love for you, and perhaps your sister too!, to do a “picnic basket” tasting review of popular categories of packaged foods suitable for a picnic in the park. Kinda like how the 2 of you review tea time foods? Might be interesting and helpful for us visitors to London!

I am an American Granny from Florida. That reminds me of a whole paycheck, LOL I mean a whole Foods. But we also have stores called Publix that started in Florida but now are moving into Tennessee and the Carolinas. They have a lot of prepared foods. We used to have a really posh store called Brunos. You had to have a black/gold credit card just to go in there. Lol. But that closed when the whole family that ran it died in a plane crash. Bummer. Fresh Market is also pricey and of course, that's my nearest one. When I'm really old I will have to go around to dollar tree ( pound shops I think you call them lol ) for my canned goods and then get some meat for nine dollars an ounce at Fresh market when I cannot drive to a regular store anymore. If you're slumming over here you'd go to a save a lot, usually in dicey/rural areas. Have a long, happy, sunny, blue sky summer dear.

When I first moved to London my office was in Marylebone High Street and Selfridges and M&S (the one you visited) were local stores. So despite living in outer London I would take the same train into Oxford Street on a Saturday to do my shopping. It took me a while to realise there was an M&S in Harrow, which was only ten minutes on the Underground from home rather than 30 minutes for Baker Street. I loved the M&S food!

Happy Friday, Hannah! Never visited Erewhon so I really don’t know if M&S is comparable. I can say that the bakery items you showed are better than all but a few of the better bakeries here. Really appreciated today’s “waffling”. I did the grocery shopping for the week this morning and so much of what you said either ran through my mind or is exactly what I said too. Have a wonderful July weekend! See you Tuesday!

OMG, as I'm prepping tea, peeling potatoes and chopping veg. and as our supermarket here in our rural town in Victoria Australia gets all the end of the run veggies that droop when you pick them up. This vlog made me so envious that I thought how scrumptious and unique and convenient (albeit the excess plastic) that I don't know wether I fancy our tea tonight. So enjoyed this vlog as I do all.

Fruit and veg in M & S is usually really top quality and lasts for a long time in the fridge. Some of the cheaper supermarkets seem good value but raspberries are often mouldy within a day. Also 2 high welfare chicken legs at £1.65 is really good value. As you say, you need to be selective but they do expect people to buy the high price prepared food which is where they make their profits. We all love M & S but £1.25 for a scone is extortionate but they are lovely. Great vlog. Thanks for giving us the tour x

Hi Hannah, American here. Love your videos. We have a Whole Foods and Erewhon here in Santa Monica, and they are way, way more expensive than M&S. M&S may cost a bit more than Tesco, but M&S is higher quality. Plus we love M&S's sandwiches for a lunch in the park. We won't book a place to stay in London if it's not close to a full M&S or a Simply Food.

I really enjoy your shopping videos. My sister and I were in London last September and visited the places you show in your videos in central London. A difference that I noticed between the food in London compared to where I live in Canada is that the serving sizes are smaller. For instance, for a pack of buns, the buns would be packaged in 8 or 12 buns per package. Also, the meat packages show 4 servings of meat, whereas in Canada it would be at least 8 servings. Honestly, in my opinion, we don't need such big serving sizes. Your cost of 42 pounds would be about 75 Canadian dollars. I absolutely fell in love with London and hope to visit again soon. Thanks for your videos!

My late mother in law used to work at an M&S food hall - and that is why none of her children could cook. That’s what she fed the family! But I taught my husband to cook, and after years of practice he’s terrific now. In my country it’s the reverse of the UK - the food can be dear (our food has the equivalent of VAT added to it) but the fuel is cheap, so it pays to cook for yourself.
