American here. We often shop at M & S when in London because we stay for 1-2 weeks at a time and save money by eating from grocery stores or small shops versus restaurants, plus it’s healthier. We enjoy the cultural experience of shopping there too. Food is 10-30% higher here and in the US it’s often taxed 6-10%, varies by state. Items like those bakery goods, cheese trays, etc. are convenient for tourists. Crossing my fingers that your new Labor government will work to lower your energy costs! Thanks for taking us shopping, Hannah!!

I am an American Granny from Florida. That reminds me of a whole paycheck, LOL I mean a whole Foods. But we also have stores called Publix that started in Florida but now are moving into Tennessee and the Carolinas. They have a lot of prepared foods. We used to have a really posh store called Brunos. You had to have a black/gold credit card just to go in there. Lol. But that closed when the whole family that ran it died in a plane crash. Bummer. Fresh Market is also pricey and of course, that's my nearest one. When I'm really old I will have to go around to dollar tree ( pound shops I think you call them lol ) for my canned goods and then get some meat for nine dollars an ounce at Fresh market when I cannot drive to a regular store anymore. If you're slumming over here you'd go to a save a lot, usually in dicey/rural areas. Have a long, happy, sunny, blue sky summer dear.

Living in the US now, I have found that when you challenge someone to tell you what about British food is not good, they can’t because they have either never been or they went for a few days and ate in crap tourist traps serving “Americanized” food. The reputation Americans have about British food comes from American soldiers who were there during and immediately after WWII. There was severe rationing for TEN YEARS after the war ended. People had nothing to eat and had to make do. Classic British food (roast beef, lamb, cheeses, etc.) is some of the best in the world!

You’ve got it wrong, the value range in M&S is cheaper than Aldi, the fresh chicken £1.50 for two chicken quarters, £1.75 for wings, value vegetables less than other supermarkets and the quality is second to none, Hannah if you don’t believe me check all the supermarkets out. The expensive items are meat and fish but having said that the flavour, the quality, excellent. XX

    Greetings Hannah!
Compared to Canadian food prices, you pay a mere fraction!!
A divided tray of various cut-up/prepared melon, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple and dip is $20.00 just outside of Toronto. That’s not even the “large” platter….
A very small frozen lobster tail is $15.99!
    Organic eggs:$8.00 a dozen. “”Regular” eggs $4++….
A large carton of milk: $6.50 or more.
A 1100 sq foot bungalow in a suburb outside of Toronto goes for $1.2 Million, not renovated in the last 40++ years!!
Our cost of living is outrageous.
We envy you your food prices!!!

*cries in Canadian* When I moved to London, I was shocked at how low the cost of groceries and living there actually was. I think the only thing that is about the same price as my area of Canada and London is the cost of real estate/ rent. But in general, everything else is at the very least, a minimum in Canada 2x as much. Out of curiosity, I used to do a normal monthly online grocery shopping comparison with tescos and Morrisons compared to Walmart in Canada and with conversion it usually came to anywhere from 6-7x the cost in Canada compared to London food prices. The last time i did the comparison though, the food prices in London did increase but the shop was still around 4x now expensive in Canada than London with far lesser quality food in Canada. Combine that with the extremely cheap phone plans, internet, insurance, etc and I saved so much money whilst living in London during those years. Short story long, I'm totally jealous of your shopping today 😂

I don't understand that. I suppose it depends on what you eat but my food costs have only risen slightly over the recent years. I would certainly make most of those items at home for less than the prices shown here. I do buy everything as the basic ingredients and for many items I buy the largest size possible if it is not going to deteriorate.
For example - Two full size pork tenderloins in both Loblaw and Sobeys is about $8 (about 4 pounds UK, I suppose) and makes 6 meals. Then some fresh vegetables depending on availability and pricing. These prices in M&S look double that to me!

Having been to the Beverly Hills Erewhon many times- It's nothing like M&S Food Hall (which I shop at 4 visits a year). Erewhon has no holiday spirit such as Christmas decor and treats. I shop at this M&S because I find it so inexpensive compared to American food shops. I buy the Erewhon smoothies for 18.00. My friend purchased the ingredients at Erewhon for a pizza. The total was 150.00! I've purchased oxygen infused water at erewhon for 20.00. That being said my utility bill for electricity is typically 60.00 a month even in the winter with heat. Now I'm craving the M&S smoked salmon sandwich. so good and so simple!

But I taught my husband to cook, and after years of practice he’s terrific now. In my country it’s the reverse of the UK - the food can be dear (our food has the equivalent of VAT added to it) but the fuel is cheap, so it pays to cook for yourself.

So despite living in outer London I would take the same train into Oxford Street on a Saturday to do my shopping. I really enjoy your shopping videos. My sister and I were in London last September and visited the places you show in your videos in central London. A difference that I noticed between the food in London compared to where I live in Canada is that the serving sizes are smaller. For instance, for a pack of buns, the buns would be packaged in 8 or 12 buns per package. Also, the meat packages show 4 servings of meat, whereas in Canada it would be at least 8 servings. Honestly, in my opinion, we don't need such big serving sizes. Your cost of 42 pounds would be about 75 Canadian dollars. I absolutely fell in love with London and hope to visit again soon. Thanks for your videos!

The supermarkets are starting to get more 'on the go' food but nothing like over there. Im a Brit over in Massachusetts for one more year and yes the food prices are 40-60% higher and of a far lower quality. When we are shopping we spend most of the time in the supermarket looking at the ingredients and putting it back. High fructose syrup, GMO, dangerous food colouring, hormone injected beef, bleach washed chicken, trans fats and farmed salmon feed with artificial colouring to give the fish a brighter red colour. All banned in UK & EU. As for the bread its full or sugar, why? We mostly buy organic but that puts the price up even more so that basket you brought if you could find it all would be at least $120 and lower quality. Considering the Uk is out of the single market so the costs of bringing in Eu imports is higher now but still much lower than the States and they are self sufficient in most of their produce. It's just a rip off but. Lastly the packaging on most food looks as though it's been designed in the 1950's and never updated. Only one more year!!

Also 2 high welfare chicken legs at £1.65 is really good value.
