True... However, I noticed a lot of unique parts and features on that vehicle which means that it wasn't that cheap to R&D. Cheap compliance was the Toyota RAV4 that came with the lowest production version Tesla swap. The body might not be unique, but the doors and several other parts are a one off. Hopefully, (most likely) Mazda is going to come out with a MX-50 through 90 using some of these parts/R&D.
I really wish people would stop saying the term "vegan leather". It's usually just plastic made from 100% NON renewable resources. It doesn't degrade in a landfill, and not leather in the slightest. It's just a marketing term.
Back then charging was slow and no infrastructure. The Leaf was always going to be a second car for someone commuting around town. Nowadays EVs can replace being the primary car with all the improvements

The rear hinge doors are actually really handy for getting one big opening without a traditional b-pillar to put stuff in the back without moving the front seats but it makes more sense on a car you aren’t planning on using the rear seats regularly for passengers. I’d rather have the rear doors than only 2 doors but if I NEED a car to have 4 doors this is not the best way to go.
My fiance and I went to the Mazda dealership and were considering this car for her, and the salesman talked us into a CX5 even though it was cheaper. I think that speaks volumes

@sd77 no they aren't. Only the chevy bolt is cheaper as well equipped. I think the bolt is subsidized because it's by far the cheapest good electric car you can buy.

I can see it as being the perfect city car. Would probably last you 10-15 years depending on battery reliability. I'd imagine it will be popular in Europe, too. You don't NEED speedy acceleration in a daily driver. You don't NEED more than 100 miles' worth of range for driving to work. Even if you do, you can charge it at work. You don't NEED people climbing in and out of your back seats all the time. You get a premium feeling interior that rivals most luxury brands. A smooth driving experience to get to work/groceries. Fast charging in case you do need to drive more than 50 miles one way. It's a practical car for a market that has strayed from providing just for people's needs.
I have a 2023 Mazda CX-30. Love the car for sure and the 2.5 has some pep to it. Just wish Mazda would include more for the price you pay like other manufacturers do.

These are already on sale 2nd hand in the UK. You can pick up a very low mileage 2 year old fully loaded top of the range model for as low as £14,000. These are great for city commuting - where your round trip commute is 30 miles or less and you’ve got home charging with work charging as a bonus. Charge it on a low night charging tariff (9 pence a kilowatt hour) and you’re literally cackling all the way to the bank. Trickle charge it every night at home on a 7.2kWh charger and you’ll never notice the tiny range. If like me you no longer drive long distances and only commute to work and back - and never drive out of London - this is not a bad choice - IF BOUGHT SECOND HAND. These are extraordinarily well built and have a premium interior. Yes, it’s a bit tight in the back - but if you’re 170cm tall or less - your passengers will have far more space than in a supermini. They’re not all bad - however, they’re genuinely NOT FOR EVERYONE. I’ll buy one 2nd hand - suits me perfectly - that design IS totally ME…!!! 😊
Yes it is. Bought one for my daughter. Drives really well. Responsive. 1 downside: it is quite noisy/not a lot of sound insulation. Obviously this reduces weight and improves fuel economy, but is a little annoying on long highway trips.
After depreciation does it's magic, it'll come down to a reasonable price. For the use as a city run around, 100 miles should be alright, especially if you can charge at home. A parent ferrying their kid between school, activities and home won't need more than 100 miles a day.

You might have wanted to point out that there's so much space in the front because they're going to be putting a rotary engine in it to serve as a range extender.
So they’re going to recall it and install that range extender for everyone who payed 35k? No, it’s irrelevant until the bird is in the hand. You’re buying that car as is and he’s reviewing it as such. Future plans don’t mean squat for every sucker who ends up with one of these on their balance sheet.
Most people don't consider that the battery charge is also used for the entire car's a/c. In the winter time, those cars don't hold enough charge for the heater to turn on at all and in hot states, it's the same for that a/c- it barely blows and doesn't cool. So unless you live in a year-round perfect climate, perfect temp or drive very little at all- you are going to experience little to no a/c at all while maintaining a charge long enough to get to your destination. This is why you see a rash of Tesla's for super cheap at various car dealerships these days.
Bought my 2009 Honda fit for $700, fixed it up and it's been incredibly reliable with zero issues for 2 years now, couldn't even comprehend spending thousands of dollars let alone $35k+ on a car lol

it's not dangerously slow which is a good thing, but the range is abysmal because it was meant for in-the-city driving only. the actual downside is, for $35k, you can get plenty of cars with similar creature comforts that can actually leave the city. if this had at minimum 200 miles of range at maybe $30k, this actually would have been a good deal considering the quality of its parts, and how nice the build quality actually is.
I actually bought a used one last year. I live in a small city with a short daily commute and my childhood home where my parents live is only 100km/62miles from my apartment. They're a charger both on their house and next to my parking space in the city so I almost never use public chargers. It's cheap to drive and cheap to own. When I feel like going fast I hop on my motorcycle instead. For long distance travel I use public transport. Sure, there are cars out there that cost more and suit more people, but considering what it costs and what it's designed to do, it has amazing value. Besides, I trust Japanese car manufacturers WAY more than the unproven and shady Chinese ones...
The only thing that would make this vehicle less pointless would be a 10-15k price tag. 100mile range would be perfect as a cheap daily driver to/from work

Wow. Can’t believe they released that when you can buy a Chevy Bolt EUV for less. The Bolt EUV actually has tons of legroom in the back and does about 180 miles in the winter and like 260 in the summer.
Completely lost me at 100 mile range. I can’t even leave town with that. 35 grand so I can then pay to get it towed home because it couldn’t make the trip back home.
This is definitely form over function. If I wanted a small electric CUV, I’d go for the Chevrolet bolt EUV over the Mazda MX-30. But the Mazda MX-5 electric two seater is worth getting though.

These are extraordinarily well built and have a premium interior. Yes, it’s a bit tight in the back - but if you’re 170cm tall or less - your passengers will have far more space than in a supermini.
They’re not all bad - however, they’re genuinely NOT FOR EVERYONE.

Yes it is. Bought one for my daughter. Drives really well. Responsive. 1 downside: it is quite noisy/not a lot of sound insulation. Obviously this reduces weight and improves fuel economy, but is a little annoying on long highway trips.
After depreciation does it's magic, it'll come down to a reasonable price. For the use as a city run around, 100 miles should be alright, especially if you can charge at home. A parent ferrying their kid between school, activities and home won't need more than 100 miles a day.

I could see someone who has some money to blow getting this for their highschooler just to drive to school and back and bop around town, but doesn’t want them going too far? But for that price you could get a loaded Honda civic which would make a way better first car that can last them a decade or more

My 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan EX hit 215,000 miles this year. Still running good. 3.8L V6 gas engine.
My 2005 Cadillac SRX has 265,000!

You might have wanted to point out that there's so much space in the front because they're going to be putting a rotary engine in it to serve as a range extender.
They might as well install bicycle pedals, and save the space in front for the trunk.

Most people don't consider that the battery charge is also used for the entire car's a/c. In the winter time, those cars don't hold enough charge for the heater to turn on at all and in hot states, it's the same for that a/c- it barely blows and doesn't cool. So unless you live in a year-round perfect climate, perfect temp or drive very little at all- you are going to experience little to no a/c at all while maintaining a charge long enough to get to your destination. This is why you see a rash of Tesla's for super cheap at various car dealerships these days.

Was thinking it’s more of a barely used vehicle. Something someone older or someone who only drives once a week to get groceries would get. There’s no need for speed in every car, don’t understand why people care about every single damn new car made being faster than 4 second 0 to 60.

it's not dangerously slow which is a good thing, but the range is abysmal because it was meant for in-the-city driving only. the actual downside is, for $35k, you can get plenty of cars with similar creature comforts that can actually leave the city. if this had at minimum 200 miles of range at maybe $30k, this actually would have been a good deal considering the quality of its parts, and how nice the build quality actually is.

I actually bought a used one last year. I live in a small city with a short daily commute and my childhood home where my parents live is only 100km/62miles from my apartment. They're a charger both on their house and next to my parking space in the city so I almost never use public chargers. It's cheap to drive and cheap to own. When I feel like going fast I hop on my motorcycle instead. For long distance travel I use public transport. Sure, there are cars out there that cost more and suit more people, but considering what it costs and what it's designed to do, it has amazing value. Besides, I trust Japanese car manufacturers WAY more than the unproven and shady Chinese ones...

The only thing that would make this vehicle less pointless would be a 10-15k price tag. 100mile range would be perfect as a cheap daily driver to/from work
All I know is, if you pull up to a Mazda dealer and don't immediately buy a car, they will hunt you down until you leave town and change your name.
That’s a dealdership problem, not a brand issue. Visited my local mazda dealer 3x when shopping cars and they never reached out even tho i never went with their cars.

The rare event I get down to 100 miles is when I start thinking about chargers in my Tesla. Imagine if I had to think about it all the time... that would suck.
Wow. Can’t believe they released that when you can buy a Chevy Bolt EUV for less. The Bolt EUV actually has tons of legroom in the back and does about 180 miles in the winter and like 260 in the summer.
They are practically giving these away in Norway now. It is THE cheapest new car you can buy, and they start at only $21,000 (NOK 219 900)

This is definitely form over function. If I wanted a small electric CUV, I’d go for the Chevrolet bolt EUV over the Mazda MX-30. But the Mazda MX-5 electric two seater is worth getting though.
