Even severely damaged that old briggs still manages to do some work. Very impressive. When you did that compression test I never imagined that engine would be so badly damaged. 92 psi is pretty good for one of those engines.
Man thats why I like briggs, you can beat the snot out of them and have like no compression and somehow they will still fire up, I had a old 6 horse push mower where the rings were gone, it smoked the entire time it was running and it felt really easy to pull the string like no compression, I dumped rear end fluid in it as I had no oil on hand, I used that thing for 2 years before I just gave it away to someone who needed a mower.
I would’ve liked to play with this engine. It’s scrap anyway but I would quite enjoy tinkering with it to see how much better I could get it to run. Your professionalism, knowledge and dedication to the art of small engines is impressive!
I applaud your persistence with that particular mower - if it were me I would have given up as soon as I recognized how bad the cylinder bore, camshaft and the exhaust valve were.
That is some vintage mower I’ve never seen before, in ok condition (except the engine) absolutely amazing to see it running and mowing again! Great work 😃 can’t wait for the next video.
Agreed, just more trouble after some trouble, but perserverence payed off. Shows what could be done with a half desent engine, or one you could get parts for
Oh, wow, I haven't seen one of those mowers in decades. My dad had one in the mid 80's (in the US, btw, don't know what it was called over here). After moving to where we live now in the late 80's he hit something and stalled it, never ran since. Me, being a senior in highschool in '99, decided to take the engine off and into my small engines class. When I pulled the flywheel off, I discovered it was just a sheered flywheel key that kept it from running. Dad never checked it. I still had to tear it all down for the class and my teacher asked if it was a new engine because the piston was so clean that he didn't think it was as old as I told him. I still have the shop manual for the engine around somewhere even though I no longer have the motor or the mower.
THIS was equally the most brilliant and hilarious thing I've watched in a long time mate 😂, seeing you ride that mower with basically Hazmat PPE because of the exhaust, had me absolutely rolling! Great job! Getting that to even start let alone mow your lawn is a testament to your knowledge and expertise. I really wish I had a neighbour like you 😂 so great 👍
Tbh, I love the fact that you got this thing going in the condition that it was. It is more entertaining and slightly impressive to see what shouldn’t be done, well, be done.
This has been fantastic to view dude. An hour+ showcasing your skills, knowledge, and that dogged perseverance to get it to run 😁. Not to mention the pleasing timbre of your dulcet tones 😉. I've watched this with the same kinda levels of anticipation and expectation of any big budget movie. Honest. Favourite bit was waiting for the exhaust smoke to clear to see if it was actually cutting while you drove around 😁. Thanks for this my man. Muchly appreciated and enjoyed 🙏. 😎
I do appreciate your speaking about everything and your explanation of how things work and the purposes for all the parts. I prefer these videos over your restoration videos for the simple fact these are extremely educational for me. Thank you for all of your videos.
We are not going to judge you whatsoever for not putting enough effort in; you've already put way too much! We know that motor is scrap. Love these videos and keep up the great work!
Great video. I would like to see that mower with a different engine. It seemed like a sturdy, well-built machine. I agree that the engine is only good for parts!
unbelievable patience there i think... well done... considering the condition of it, you did well with the basic restore, although we could probably hear in your voice how much it was bugging you.. but well done all the same. Looking forward to the Next one.
I have owned a few what I call conventional mowers like that with both front and rear engines. I now own a zero turn mower for two years and would never go back>> Cutting the lawn is a pleasure and I look forward to it every week !
one things for sure you wont get any mosquitoes when mowing with this 😂 also the fact that this engine runs with everything thats wrong with it just goes to show how tuff these old briggs and stratton's really are
If many also have a walk behind brush mower when if it came from the factory with a six horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine when if the few also have an older riding lawnmower also with a six horsepower engine when if they allegedly blew it up to replace it with a 12 HP Briggs and Stratton with electric start.
Check the gas and fill with oil machine 😁! Amazing that you got her running again. It's definitely seen some hard use in it's past! Thanks for sharing!
I had a similar briggs nd Stratton engine that locked up due to running out of oil and it was the crankshaft seizing to the sump. With a drill press I drilled out the hole in the sump oversized installed a bronze bushing. Cleaned up the crankshaft is best I could and the mower has been running for 10 years.
had the same mower, turned it into a free go cart, took the engine off, used a side shaft motor direct drive with cintrifuge clutch, then direct chain drive to rear sprocket, had to cut a slot for chain to go through , reached a speed of 40km/h wide open, great for going up and down hills, used it in winter to pull my 2 stroke snowblower and gas on a mini 6 foot long x 4 foot wide trailer around town to do side walks and driveways
I like your variety of projects, and goals of restoration vs will it run. This was fun to watch and congrats on getting it running. Agree that it would make a nice resto or at least “new” engine👍👍👍
Wow, congratulations! I was not expecting that to work at all let alone so well, I'd love to see a full restore on this mower with a new/refurbished engine. Great little machine there.
I've been working on an old 1970 Hahn-Eclipse Pow-R-Boy 200, complete with a 5hp Briggs and a steering wheel from a 1966 Mercury! I call her Goldie, as in Goldie Hahn. Cheers from Alberta, Canada!
As we can see, this abused small engine could be brought to life again and will now be a reliable partner to cut the lawn even after a heavy rain. This engine will be grateful for every kind of attention you bring to it 😂 Anyway, nice to follow the video and learned a lot. Greetings from Germany and keep on going 🌞🍀👍
With all the grass cutting on your videos, your neighbors must think you are obsessed with your garden.😆 Very impressed with your work. Have a wonderful day.
I have one of those mowers in my barn. My grand father bought it brand new. It’s missing the mower deck. I use to drive it around our farm when I was a kid. Good video.
Looks rather like the King Cub made in Katikati NZ, an altogether solid, tough and reliable mower, more expensive than the cheap pressed steel rip-shit-and-bust numbers with pretty paint jobs, but well worth it in the long run. I like your style and it's a pleasure to listen to your voice that would go down a treat on radio.
Dang. One doesn't usually see a carburetor in better shape than the engine itself! The history of that engine must be fascinating... whoever worked on that must have been an interesting person, since they understood the engine enough to take it apart and put it together, but didn't know enough to keep it from tearing itself apart... I would have at least tried to hone the cylinder to get some of those grooves out. Yeah, it would have widen the gaps on the rings, but the grooves are where the oil burning is really coming from, IMHO. Too bad you don't have a lathe (or the time perhaps?) to fix that main bearing. Really though, all the things put together make it not worth it. I bet the exhaust seat loosening was the first issue, then just metal shavings making a mess of everything else after... Nice work getting it running though!
That's amazing, it reminds me of my 70s Stiga, looks similar. Mine was an 8hp but now has the 12hp fitted along with a twin blade deck that I recently converted to be more mulcher. I was looking for another out front Husqy, but this Stiga is just so plucky and fun. The engines so big it acts like a penny racer ( maybe before your time) ? Great work getting it to run, good bones to work with.
Très beau travail de mécanique 👍bon courage pour l amortisseur et a bientôt pour la suite pour l amortisseur peu être voir du côté des scouts italiens ✋
I used to have a Ford RMT 51 that looked just like this monster some 40 years ago here in the States. You can see some pictures around the net of the bigger brother Ford RMT 66 which had a slightly larger deck and fenders. This one looks the same as my old Ford RMT 51 except the color. I remember sticking a new B&S 8HP IC series engine on mine as the old 5HP was too far gone and I used it for years to mow lawns with in my youth. Of course without the special deeply grooved drive belt, the thing would pop wheelies all day long dumping the clutch in third gear. LOL
I think you could take the prize for the best running worst riding mower in all of your country. The only thing that could make it worse is if you somehow backfire every once in a while! Loved the video and the effort you extended on getting that pile to actually work. I thought you would junk the project or part it out to others before the end.
So glad to see it up and running, even if only for a little bit. A truly majestic machine, mowing the lawn and fogging mosquitos at the same time!
To look at that machine I never would have believed it would mow ever again. You are amazing. Thanks.

60psi is enough for an engine to run
Man lol my 27hp kawi has 180 left and 190 on the right cylenders lol
I have a weed whack that runs on about 15

Much appreciated
Who needs waffles when you have this lovely flapjack snack of a video?

*_I love the amount of love and dedication you show on these restorations!_*
I do admire the time and effort you put into these projects. Well done!

love how you methodically go through the steps to diagnose the engine you make it very clear
.thanks
The fact you got it running was nothing short of witchcraft. Cracking watch. Well Done.
I used to service these when I was young. Brings back memories. 😀
I love to watch these they are so relaxing to watch especially with some popcorn and a nice cold drink.

Thank you for your video. You do such a fine job filming and editing. Nice to watch on a cold, rainy day.

That was brilliant. Thanks for the video.
I think it would be awesome to see a complete restore for that good old mower.
You are a master of understzting just how buggered that engine is.
Mother of gods that engine is so shoot. Fill the oil and check the fuel kind of engine. Really impressed you got that one running. Great work

Oh that was such a brilliantly funny end to a labour of love. God job fella. Put a bit of dye in the tank and join the Red Arrows!
For a smoke screening tank it does a good job of a mower impression 😀
Loved your video. Sounded like an old hit and miss motor at idle when you first got it started. God bless.
Run a can of Sea Foam through it and it will run like new.
well done on getting that running, been a really good video to watch like all your videos you put out 👍

Love the haz mat suit and respirator!
It's amazing the amount of abuse those Brigg's engines can take but still run...even a 2 stroke would smoke less!

Piston rings will rotate as the engine runs, no real need to try to space them any particular way. They'll just move anyhow.
