Couldn't agree more. Some of the performance 'tweaks' out there even do more harm than good. The default settings are there for a reason. Although on some notebooks, setting the power profile to high lengthens the time before the CPU/GPU starts throttling (looking at you ThinkPad T490). That is by design. But even in that case, you'd probably only want to set power to 'high' when gaming or performing some other task where latency would be an issue.
Wish a lot more people on you tube would say what you just did. On todays computers you are right it does not do any good. I hope people on you tube will come to there senses and realize this but I fear they won't. Great video Brian.

The best "lightweight" setting for Windows visual effects is Performance, then turn smooth screen fonts back on (as with that off, it really does look horrible) - but that's for something using a weak CPU, integrated graphics and not a huge amount of RAM - and set the background to solid colour. Windows 10 is pretty stark and basic anyway, compared to Win7 Aero. Actually, with precisely 4GB RAM, do you: 1. Use x64 to get it all, and hope the 64 bitness doesn't consume more RAM 2. Lose some RAM with x86 and hope the smaller code makes up for it
The sarcasm is real in this one. Only thing I personally think that might make any difference is to pause windows updates and pause any security programs that might interfere.

well, I'm not sure how to describe it, but if you genuinely have into the hundreds of program installs or more.. the more likely something is to bork up. Though it is more of a general window usage search feature. though it may mean alot less now where installers like steam have done a far better job at globalizing the dependencies & has done 100x better at not clobbering dependencies installs with ones from other games. --- honestly that's kinda what I think my performance issues were then, but the only way to 'fix' it was to uninstall & reinstall the dependencies manually, and de-bloat the start menu of steam games.
I've bought my gaming laptop early this Sep 2020. The main reason for changing a new gaming laptop is Microsoft more likely not going to provide supports to the previous Windows. I had been using my earlier gaming laptop is already for 7-8 years and 3 more years it will be "done"!. So I will see a difference un gaming, but I'm not the type to upgrade if I spotted a difference in performance. Basically I just do not play that game title. So my current gaming laptop, I'm planning to use it for at least another 6-7 years before I change another new device. I'm just sharing my thought of PC or Laptops.
The biggest difference the ‘power’ setting makes is the amount of energy being used when the CPU and graphics card are idle. Balanced should lower the watts used when it’s idling. :)
@@breakingthe4thwall260 Thanks, it's done and works well. I first burned an ISO on a cd and went through the installation to the point where it asks what you want to save. It wouldn't let me save anything. 'save nothing' was the only option available. I Google and the word is that certain updates were causing it. I then tried to uninstall the updates, but Windows said the can't be uninstalled. Then on a hunch, I tried the Windows Media tool, which I found out allows you to run the setup through the tool. It took forever, but it actually worked.
do agree most of the tweaks would help on a old system but to get better performance just a simply upgrade to a ssd and more ram normally works. also most time you forget what you tweaked and normally have to reinstall to correct the problems.
Brian, this must have been a less then good day today for you... ;) Can't speak to games as I do not play them. I'm not new to computers and ran a BBS back before the internet was a thing. Commodore 64 before that and purchased online with a 300 baud modem. Although I knew about certain settings I never used them and a good example is in one of your videos showing disallowing windows to handle advanced features. This made a difference. Do I disable startup programs; yes I do. I start them manually when needed. Do I turn off services, only lately the ones you have recommended. Ryzen is Ryzen but we can all learn to shave a little off here and there. Let's not call it hacking but learning and trimming a long the way. If I get back 0.001 percent back from the operating system back to the processor any processor I'm a happy camper. I did want to wish you and yours a very Happy New Year. 2021 I'm hoping will be a little better then the last year!
From experience,most optimization tweaks are good for old/weak systems with 2 or 4 GB ram,a bit better experience running windows and browsing.Goes without saying that on heavier tasks,performance remains a big heap of crap.
A lot of tweaks are fake but some aren't. Games like Apex Legends run massively better with hyperthreading disabled and ISLC running in the background to bring the timer resolution down to 0.5ms. The difference isn't raw fps numbers, its in jitter and frametimes. In my experience and my friends experience we have all noticed the games are smoother and visibly much clearer. Raw fps doesn't matter if the frametimes themselves are terrible. btw rtss doesn't seem to measure poor frametimes due to the cpu.

its true most tweaks are laughable and are useless and can break a system, usually the ISP's DNS is your best choice because cached lookups prevent the need for recursion, some of the network tweaks are really stupid like the one that removes QOS reserved bandwidth, which will cause voice and video will suffer *IF* you manage to utilise 100% of your link bandwidth - but there are quite a few tweaks out there that are useful for a given circumstance - but the end users understanding should go beyond following a set of instructions, sadly the trend is windows is getting more and more bloaty with more and more places to hide things and as file sizes get larger more files dont get scanned because of the performance hit on the system -

If I only use my PC for web browsing, would I consume less energy having a single board computer or does my PC consume as little as a SBC when idle?
Low Min FPS usually means stuttering. So yes - the system runs more smooth for competitive gaming after the tweaks. Also i never played your Unigine Heaven game. Can we make a network PVP game on it?? :)

I guess sponsors' money was more important, than the truth back then. I run all of these on my 9900K@5GHz all core. 32GB DDR 3700@C15, and 960EVO 500GB. They do add up, and give you a much more responsive machine. Boot times are shorter, page loads are quicker, etc. Not everything is about Max FPS in games!

Windows doesn’t defrag any SSD anymore since Windows 8 (if I recall well). The program still has the same name, but it trims instead. In the video it’s even showed ’% trimmed’.

I agree. My Win 10 was running slow, so I tried a bunch of these. Now, I'm doing a repair -reinstall of Windows....🙄.
A lot of these tweaks break things.

Get a good asus sbc or something reasonable and convert your PC to a server (NAS).

I was always told to increase the size of the "Virtual Memory" to speed up my PC. It seemed to help (a little) on older PCs.
Yes, that helps with low memory. My PC is 3 yrs old with 4MB of ram, but it's not enough. I'm also running a memory manager that is helping.

There are some tweaks that can help with stuttering, but if you really want to fix it, upgrade your computer.
