Nice balanced summary of a topic that's been going around the internet for a long time. Personally, on my client's systems I just turn off some of the bells and whistles in system performance, turn off background apps in privacy settings and adjust the startup items in task manager and that seems to do the trick. Everything else seems to be just overkill and as you say Brian, sometimes causes uneccessary problems and blue screens.
Good video for older hardware and hard drive users. But best options are SSD, faster and more RAM, always limit the amount of bloat software and always check Task Manager to view what background processes are running, many 3rd party programmes are guilty of running stuff in the background. However many branded programs are also guilty, eg Acronis backup software has some strange back ground processes running as many as 5 or 6. Much of this stuff is also due to online cloud services. Acronis is very good, but just be aware of the amount of background processes these high end software suites are running. But as I said before try not to install too much bloatware. Good video and very helpful though.
Thought I would also mention: In Chrome - I use Task Manger to end Tasks in Chrome, a restart is right there after opening it again. I also find helpful to delete Prefetch as well as using - Run - temp and %temp%, then use Disk Cleanup. One can put RUN in lower tray while it s open. They all work good for a sluggish computer. Other browsers likely the same fot the Task Manager thing in Chrome.
@@paulvancyber1979 It is a Windows feature that holds information so as to speed things up as it is held in Prefetch. In my opinion is can and does eventually slow a computer down. Use/try as described.

Remember that the built-in search that uses Index Options was not really designed to search everything on your drive, only the most common places, if you open the Index Options you can choose the folders you want to search within ie fine files via the search bar, so you might need to add more folders depending on where they are stored. Conversely you can remove folders you don't want to Windows to index.
Excellent. Grazie. I have used all of these tweaks over the years. Performance increase is/was very negligible. Windows 10 does a pretty good job overall. I do use and recommend system restore. Your observations are priceless; common sense; and right on.
If you want to be sure to get the best out of your PC one thing to note is that if you upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 I think it's best if you do a full reinstall from scratch to avoid any possible instability issues from the previous install.
One of the worst things I've noticed about Windows 10 is the random pause/lag when you type. You think you typed the word wrong but really it's a pause that happens and the letter(s) don't type out because of the lag. It's a horrid issue that not one single person has figured out what causes it. (trust me I have searched high and low...) It's annoying as hell
The first tweak (visuals) does improve perceived performance and I used it for years. Now that you mentioned it, I set it again on Win 10 (not all options). Things move snappier on an already snappy system. Disabling pagefile was a good thing in the Win XP and Win 7 era. After that, it made Windows unstable and complain about low memory. Thanks for the video!
I'dlike to see you do this video again but do benchmarks before an after changing these settings so we can see how much difference they did or didn't make.
Thank you Brian. I don't tweak my Windows 10 system. It runs very fast "as is". The only tweak you mentioned the I do make is to turn off drive indexing. I have a Samsung Evo Plus 500GB NVMe drive. Carey Holzman recommends to turn off indexing. The reasoning is that indexing creates an excessive amount of wear and tear on an SSD. So I do it for that reason alone. Geo from USA
Turning off indexing is pointless. NVME or SSD has so much terabytes written (tbw) nowadays, that they would take many years before they would even reach that figure. At your usage rate, your SSD would last 20+ years or more. Also, SSD would be obsolete long before say 300 TBW is ever achieved. So it's pointless disabling it Britec said :)

When u realize that to show these tweaks he used a virtual machine since some of them are not recommended to be off otherwise most of them does boost ur system performance.
So my only question is, how do you measure the performance? How would you say that your system works with higher performance after applying all these tweaks? Any numbers or measurements? You know very well that except a few built in options designed on Windows, Microsoft would never ever confirms anyone of these changes. Plus many tweaks applied to the Windows will stay on it for ever and all future Microsoft Windows update can never ever reverse it back.
I would agree with your opinion on if these tweaks make a "massive" difference. I can't see a lot of difference as well. Maybe on an older machine it would make a huge difference
Indexing vs SSD, one reason for turning it off is that maintaining the index suffers from a high level of write amplification - one compromise in a SSD + HDD setup is to move the index to the HDD - the index won't be as fast, of course, but may be faster than un-indexed on the SSD (unless NVME)
SSD are so durable today. It's not like when they were first released. SSD has so many terabytes written (tbw) so the results will be negligible and pointless disabling.
When friends or family with older hard-drive only PCs come to me to speed things up (in addition to most of the tweaks in this video) I also buy them a 32GB high speed USB stick ($10-$15) and devote all of it to ReadyBoost...anecdotally, I find ReadyBoost makes their systems 10%-20% quicker.
Maybe you should have said in the beginning of the video what you've said at the end of the it, like I haven't seen a huge difference and it might cause some problems after these tweaks so it is totally up to you, thereby many people might have decided not to touch it because after hearing that and doing all these changes they maybe will have to rewind the video and revert everthing to default, thanks a lot anyway for this video and those you have made before which are very helpful
You do not need the index if you are using instant search tool like Everything. Also for the SWAP file I prefer to move it to another drive which is less loaded. I have a small SSD which is still plenty fast but not good for anything other than the swap file and browser temp folders. My windows is on the main SSD.
FYI - You have to have the windows search service enabled to have the Media Streaming feature enabled. I found that one out when I enabled my file share and Media server.
Buying more RAM or a faster HD isn't always an option for people. One trick that can sometimes work is to keep your OS on a different drive than your data. That way when the OS has to access something it doesn't have to dig through a pile of other stuff and if data is being accessed at the same time the HD doesn't have to access both areas.
By far the biggest loss of performance was the update process. That cannot be easily turned off. But on a netbook the update drove the disk to 100% and the processor to 98% for many hours. And it got worse over time. Basically the machine became useless until I could kill all possible attempts to update. Doing anything else is like adjusting the air pressure in the tyres of a car to improve performance while the brakes are jammed full on.
Regarding windows search and indexing, they can be turned off due to being slow at displaying results. And as an alternative, to use the piece of software called search everything cause regardless of how big your drive is, you get all the matches with your search in an instant compared to the windows search. Although the windows search and indexing can be turned off, I don't think that it will make a significant difference in performance. Possibly only on PC-es with only mechanical drives or just the placebo efect.

In the past everytime i purchased a PC at a local retailer they always recommend to purchase scripting for my new PC & they claim it starts up faster & performance as well but i hesitate as they say the cost is an additional $100 CAD ? how about this for a problem.....under W10 v1909 - constant issues with programs not responding/winzip now taking 24hrs+ to unpack a 10gig folder. Awful. Recently had a new motherboard fitted under warranty. Please help, it is driving me mad!

So, do you know of ANY piece of software that can do, this whilst checking that the most frequently used path by the Kernel or shell, that can safely delete unwanted entries? My registry currently has well over 300,00 identifiers! Cheers.

I'm sorry but all those tweaks, have no or almost no advantage in optimizing an SSD, quite the opposite: they will cause more problems and damage than benefits. Windows, knows very well how to interact with SSDs, and will automatically make the necessary changes for maximum optimization. Read the excellent article by Chris Hoffman (an expert on the subject), but he's not the only expert to hold the same position on the subject. Use a program like Crystal DiskMark, before and after doing these "fantastic" optimizations, and then tell us what you gained in speed. And if it's to preserve the life of the SSD: read the beginning of the article carefully.
i got windows installed on 500gb ssd drive and most stuff is on my secondary 1TB hdd drive which was my main disk before ? is it safe to disable superfetch etc idk what they even do ?
This is wrong, the right method is: -Initial size: - (on this case is 1851) use the number that your PC show you. -Max Size : -1024 x RAM x 2 = Max Size ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example: -Initial size: 1851 -Max Size: 1024 x 3 (your ram) x 2 = 6114 (Max Size) Initial Size: 1851 Max Size: 6114 Good luck.
paging file is helping with the compatibility than speed to me. Some games I have to turn it on and set to 8GB to make the game detects that I have enough ram even though I have 16GB of ram.

Is it still free?
Cheers
Yes, it is
No, it will cost you some of data and work when Windows 10 installs broken updates
On my Core2Quad CPU systems, it makes a difference, but on my i7 cores it's wast of time because systemperformance is already fast. I must say I"m using all Workstation MB"s from Asus, some with SAS drives, for constant performance 24/24/7
I have a question I’d like answering please if you can: I have 256gb Samsung nvme drive. 250gb sandisk ultimate pro. And countless HDD. What is the best practices for setting up windows with these drives please? I do have pave for another nvme drive, what size should I get and use to help out my setup please? X470 msi Ryazan, 3600x and a 1050ti rtfs card. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks 🙏🏻

System Restore does not restore files. It's used for making backup of Registry✌
Whats the bare minimum processes can one run Windows 10/Ltsc with for gaming purposes? That would be a good video
You forgot disable start up programs in MSconfig I agree with you just using a SSD drive will give you a massive performance gain over a rust disk. I think that desktop image is Easter Island Some of those video tweaks will give you some performance gain if you using a motherboard video GPU, ( inside the CPU) but if you are using a expensive video card with a huge amount of RAM, then it won't matter. Posted on Facebook Bye for now Cheers
These tweaks have been around for years, in 2020 I don't see no difference
Watching this video again to make my windows great..
Hello Brian can you make a video on "HOW TO MAKE WINDOWS 10 VERSION 2004 FASTER AND MORE RESPONSIVE". But, I am not forcing you bro, it would be better if you make that. Unfortunately, I have updated my windows to Version 2004.😊😁
Warning : If you turn hibernation off , windows will take few seconds longer to boot as windows will boot from scratch , which otherwise it will load some files and won't close it.
I use restore all the time trouble free , so what is the difference between hibernate and sleep , great vid thankyou
can you do a new one? my computer shows none of these. ive watched 3 of your videos and the new update changed a lot i guess because i try to follow along but you have alot more options then i do
jesus i'm merely 20 and when you said you could get 1tb ssd for 100 pound i felt old
Do not forget disable Optimize drives (Defrag) service mate(for SSD's)
We always learn something with your recommendations in my case I am using Quick CPU Software to regulate the consumption and optimization of energy, I really recommend it, thanks for your advice!
Hi Brian, Is it possible to have a restore point that doesn’t get overwritten over time. Say after a fresh install with all your programs and updates done so that I can roll back to it. Thanks
I tried 4 times installing windows 10 pro on my pc using usb and after installing updates from Windows Update & Windows Store,Pc disconnect from Wi-Fi and it removes wifi option from settings,it appears only on device manager on Hidden devices saying Hardware is disconnected...,I tried updating drivers with driver booster and driver pack solution but still not fixed,Now my pc is so slow when launching programs, logging in and it takes up to 10 minutes to boot up,Overall it runs weird, sometimes screen doesn't turn on after waking up from sleep, other times screen freeze for few seconds and I can't access anything,Fans are constantly running loud☹ It's very irritating,My pc is 3 years old and I haven't misused it
I dont understand, disable superfetch and prefetch what is the benefit?
I put my page file on drive D, with all games files. Playing a game like Anthem it uses over 12GB of page file. With an older I5 8GB rig, on start up only using 1.5GB mem versus near 3GB when I first install windows 10.
I leave page file alone and let windows deal with it. My PC is fast enough
That dark mode switch is deceiving. How is the end result dark? You can't even switch to the real dark mode one you run this. That's my only gripe.
I feel like these tips do pretty much nothing on a regular install.
It might give you back a gbs sure but if you have to turn off visual features then you need a better computer period. Get an ssd would be a good start I guess
Troubleshooting Win10 performance significantly makes the OS boot, respond, compute a lot faster.
Thanks
Great video you explain every tip and trick and also tell that it is a debating topic, and it is up to you to do or not.
Hi, my laptop boots so slow, its an old one with windows 10,but I want advice to download a free non trial cleaner/repair program as avg tool shows i have over 100 registry files corrupted. I know a ssd will speed things up also but would it be worth it on a Compaq Presario CQ71 notebook.? I use it for USB transfer/ dvd drive and word and general browser. Thanks
Exactly! Thank you.
Will these be applicable for high end windwos PC's too?
You can add them to any PC, but will it make a massive difference? NO
@@Britec09 Great, thanks for the reply. My 2950x won't need any of them then 👍
1. Run CMD and type: cd C:\ enter
Format C: enter
2. Reboot
3. Insert MX Linux bootable USB
4. Install it
5. Just smile and enjoy it
You are one smart cookie
@@Britec09 I was Windows server admin for more than 5 years, also security admin for 3 years, so YES 🙂
One more IMPORTANT thing I must say : there 's not existing way to improve win 10 performance, unless you get an SSD & Install Windows 10 LTSB
Is the grub still broken on MX? I've tried numerous times to install but it wouldn't boot up. Apparently the grub isn't working properly. I was able to install Mint without any problems. Best os for my 5 year old laptop. It came with W10 Home pre-installed which ran fine but it got progressively worse throughout the years with each update. Linux is the way to go for older hardware.
You can't format the C: drive within Windows.
In the past everytime i purchased a PC at a local retailer they always recommend to purchase scripting for my new PC & they claim it starts up faster & performance as well but i hesitate as they say the cost is an additional $100 CAD ? Is it a way to gain commission that will not do nothing for me ?
@
Britec09, does system restore reverse all these changes?
@BlackHateMatrix ok ty
I want to know the solution for my windows problem. As my wireless keyboard, mouse stops responding if left for some time untouched. Then i should turn of the pc or remove the Bluetooth receiver from the usb socket. I tried many solution from internet as well as i also tried windows troubleshooting but unfortunately i dont get any result ... will u try to explain why it is happening ...
All of your video helped me save me a ton of my money. Thanks a lot.
Glad I could help!
@@Britec09 keep the good work man. Hope your channel got 100000 subs this year. Thanks a lot . Again. Thanks
how about this for a problem.....under W10 v1909 - constant issues with programs not responding/winzip now taking 24hrs+ to unpack a 10gig folder. Awful. Recently had a new motherboard fitted under warranty. Please help, it is driving me mad!
Do we put 2048 for the same thing?
Setting the page file size to anything less than 4000mb leading to crashes in games which uses lot of vram...Any solution to this?...I realised this reason for crash after 2 months...Maybe this video could be misleading to others in reference to my issue..
System restore doesn't work when you use OneDrive.
What Is Better? Adding More RAM Or Adding More Storage?
I guess RAM idk
They are not the same thing, depending on what you need, but the size of storage space doesn't affect performance, the size of ram can affect performance,I think 16GB is enough for most tasks and games
Ever hear of or use a product called Vooch for performance?
Fantastic info, well worth watching.Great Video Bri.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello Brian,
I want to de-clutter my registry!
Yes, I know :) When I was less experienced I let a program (can't even remember it's name) find ALL duplicate entries...and yes I let it do it's thing......and yes I had to re-install the OS. Thankfully I had all my data and other stuff backed up on a 2TB ext HDD.
Today I have a SSD as C: and a 4TB Int HDD with two Ext backups.
So, do you know of ANY piece of software that can do, this whilst checking that the most frequently used path by the Kernel or shell, that can safely delete unwanted entries? My registry currently has well over 300,00 identifiers! Cheers.
I forgot what website it was on but some guy on a forum shared his registry twraks in an executable file. I used it and it deleted a lot of crap and everything still worked fine if i find it ill let you know.
@@tgn-contentandotherstuff5652 Thanks very much. Cheers.
@@thelamb288 hey bro i was lookin for my laptop that had it and i have the executable file on it and i can give you the file name to look up tomorrow.
@@thelamb288 and if you cant find the website i can copy the file and somehow send it to you. You can run it through an antivirus if you dont trust me which you probably wont.

Sir,
Yesterday a file folder in desktop is disapeared in my windows10.any solution to recover that?
Thank you.
I have installed OS on SSD and my files on HDD. Also, Raid is faster than AHCI. I have tried both. And, make sure you've 128gb SSD and 1TB HDD. This is the best combination. Take it from me. Cuz i am a clevuh girl. 😌
I tried these tweaks & it slowed my PC down so much I had to do a restore.
Deleting temp files sometimes helps
I like your background where can I get it?
Do you have any videos about using obs the recording thing? Want to downloaded it but was ages ago and unsure what to do etc
I think i done something on OBS, what do you want to see?
@@Britec09 i will be using it to record games but i remember was really hard and took ages to get it to record my screen
Just use Nvidia shadow play or amd relive OBS is only really used for streaming.
@@TYPICALGHOSTSNIPER never heard of them plus im kind of a noob to this stuff tbh
This is wrong, the right method is:
-Initial size:
- (on this case is 1851) use the number that your PC show you.
-Max Size :
-1024 x RAM x 2 = Max Size
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example:
-Initial size: 1851
-Max Size: 1024 x 3 (your ram) x 2 = 6114 (Max Size)
Initial Size: 1851
Max Size: 6114
Good luck.
I have found that turning off Indexing is s speed bonus. I have an i5 series at 3.2Ghz so not exactly slow.
if it works for you, keep on doing it.
I Have a problem Sir. In my search tool box in windows it displayed as (Search) instead of (Type here to search) please help me sir
At 12:50 , why 3 "Ultimate Performance"? They all say the exact same thing!
things are going well
*Your mouse cursor is invisible again. Why the same mistake again?* 😒
Not sure why it happened, it must be a bug
@@Britec09 *Not bug. Check your screen recording software.*
paging file is helping with the compatibility than speed to me. Some games I have to turn it on and set to 8GB to make the game detects that I have enough ram even though I have 16GB of ram.
Its a debate that will run and run.
Holy shit it fucking works even on Windows 20 2004
Can't help but feeling a little bit like a guinea pig.
Strange I see this content. Now, I have seen and followed many of your optimisation video's. In many of these video's you recommended and turned off many of these options: Windows search, prefetch, SysMain, Indexing, etc etc. And now you're telling this has no really meaning? I'm sorry but, something is not right here. This affects you Credibility!
Yeah.... Force windows to have a 2048 swap file when it was already using less.... Genius!
Can you fix this... windows 10. Hidden files one I want to delete. I'm the only administrator and I have tried the windows administrator too. Yet the file I want to delete says I dont have permission. Any ideas?
Any alternate Software For Windows Indexing For PST Search I Tried "Everything" But That Doesn't Work On Outlook PST/OST
