2017 Miata ND vs 1991 NA Interior Comparision

  • In this video Masha and I compare MX-5s, the 2017 Mazda Miata Grand Touring Edition to my 1991 NA Miata.
    There are several major differences when it comes to the trunk and interior. Not just engines and tech, but practicality as well. The ND has wonderful cupholders! But not the best placement for a 12V plug if you want to run a radar.
    The NA Miata has no cupholders, but an actual glovebox and slower to open, two latch system for the soft top convertible.

      BRUCE JEANDUC ikr, new cars are cool, but there's just so much going on, the older cars were great, just a simple design, now everything is about being futuristic...that and the na has pop ups

      Hahaha judging by the amount of irritating rattles I have in my car while driving I wouldn't call the NA super rugged! However I do get your point, it has proven to be super reliable and cheap to fix/run in general. It's lacking all the new car technology, therefore you don't really have any super expensive systems to replace. It's probably the simplest car you could get without going back as far as carburetion or getting an older diesel.
      Things I love about the NA is that it's just you and the car. No lane departure assist, no traction control, no sensors or back up cameras. It's really up to the driver and it keeps me on my toes while driving. If everybody drove cars this simple, there would most definitely be less texting and driving incidents, because people would actually have to pay attention to what they're doing on the road. (Manual transmissions play a big part I'd say)

    I added a bicycle type bottle holder to my NA. It's located on the transmission tunnel under the knee on the driver's side. There's a void there that is convenient for this use and does not interfere with accelerator leg at all. Set it at an angle that allows easy access. Fits a slender thermos and individual size drink bottles but not mugs or fast food cups, etc. Tools: drill, bit, sheetmetal self-tapping screws (or whatever) driver. Some holders are adjustable.

    I also have an ND and an NA (two NAs actually) and I'll say that most of what you talked about I agree with. Except hitting the controls with my arm when shifting. A few people have complained about this, but it's never been a problem for me. I have to TRY to push my arm down to hit it.
    Maybe I'll have to make a similar video now that I've had both for over a year. Pretty good editing too. Good job.

      Yeah... after a little under 2 years and just above 25,000 miles with my ND, I have yet to hit that controller knob with my arm by accident. Once or twice I've hit the volume knob by mistake and muted the infotainment and I will say that the overall placement of the controls isn't 100% perfect. But nothing you can't get used to IMO.
      Absence of a "true" glovebox and lack of a telescoping steering wheel would be my biggest complaints. That said: Where I live we don't get the CD-player so our central storage box is quite a bit deeper.

      Wow quick response. I just want to touch that while the top race reinforced my original idea that this was going to be a bad video i dont mean to say it was a bad segment. Obviously its not a scientific test and is for funsies. So dont think i was hating on it please.
      UA-cam is full of cheap videos to grab viewers so expectations were just low from the get go. This was charming. Especially your nd "wink"
      Im not a miata enthusiast just considering one for a toy as injury has me worried my motorcycle days are over.
      Is your girls a 2017 model? The only thing that i didnt like was thr limitrd slip model while in my browsing it looks like she has the GT but the club trin does have a limited slip so theres a potential slip(wasnt intended but keeping it after realization) for misinformation.
      Point being mostly to reiterate a fun video with good length. I certainly appreciated it and wish you all the luck groeing your channel!

      I would highly recommend a Miata as a fun weekend toy. It's the most fun you can have on 4 wheels without paying an arm and a leg.
      The White ND is a 2017 model and is the GT trim, I would personally opt for the Club Edition as it has the LSD.

    I kept cracking up at that "glove box" behind the seats because my 85 mr2 has had that for ages and I never use that space because it's behind you. I just left some stuff in there that I never touch unless I'm cleaning the car. I'm still trying to figure out what cover you have in the 91 trunk floor since my 91 doesn't have a cover and that center area is lower than yours. My spare tools and amp take that space so I always have a more limited trunk. As for the cup holder, I just added one to my 91 yesterday, so you can check out my video on that.

    • @shouldigetit
      @shouldigetit  6 років тому

      That's a neat cupholder, could you install it without drilling any new holes? Thanks for watching!

    • @myshots101
      @myshots101 6 років тому

      Thanks. You could use double sided tape, but even the stronger outside double sided tape comes off eventually and the heat would probably do that in one day and I would not trust it. I'm here in cali too. I drilled the holes into the little cover, so if you ever want to put it back, you just need to change the little cover, so it's not a huge deal there. Not to mention unless you want whatever you put in it on the floor, the screws or nuts and bolts are needed. It comes with four little screws but I only used two as you can see. So far this is the best way I can see using one in the miata. There's just no room for those as you already know. I usually just carry water with me too so this is perfect, I just used the soda to show that it can hold the weight. I need to install the second one in my mr2, but that car is down for now, so maybe I'll make a video if I ever get around to it. Anyway, I just didn't like any of the options so many have used and I figured I try this one.

    5:02 Your Miata DOES come with cup holders... You are missing it as I see from your video. It sits right between your armrest and shifter... Which makes it almost useless anyway as cups or bottles would get in the way of shifting. There are aftermarket holders however that would move it to the passenger footwell. Pound for pound, you can't find another car that's this fun and reliable.

    You didn't note the difference in dimensions. I am a bit over 6' tall and do not fit in an NA: my eyes line up directly with the top bar. My ND fits perfectly. You also fail to mention all the modern conveniences of the ND, unless you had comparable aftermarket stuff in the NA. Pretty sure no bluetooth, heated seats, adaptive headlights, sat radio, nav, auto-dim mirror, rain-sensing wipers etc in the NA. Finally, Canadian market NDs get the limited slip diff in the top 2 trim levels. No idea why Mazda is hosing the US on this feature. My '16 ND is also Ceramic Metallic which is a super cool colour in person.

    For me there is no comparison, the original was a well-made and well crafted car which was so good it's production run lasted 9 years. The ND is fine of course but loses out in every department for me: Cost, complexity, build quality (they simply don't paint them underneath any more, where it matters), visceral feel, charm, depreciation. So no comparison to be made. I have a 1990 BRG as your car and it's quite wonderful in every way.

    • @shouldigetit
      @shouldigetit  7 років тому +2

      For just me talking at the intro and end, an AudioTechnica Lavalier mic plugged into a Zoom H1 that I keep in my pocket. For the rest of it, a Rode VideoMic Pro plugged straight into the camera and then adjusted in Audacity to remove some of the hiss.

      Should I Get It Reviews since you already have the original headrest speakers, its super easy. Your seats have a zipper. All you have to do is unzip the zipper, disconnect the old speakers (2 clips in each one), and put in the new ones. Takes 5 minutes per side. Even if you had to rewire the speakers its no more than an hour all things considered. I highly recommend doing it!
