I recently had this very choice to make. I sold my '97 NA with over 200K miles on it that had been my daily since I bought it in 2001 until I bought a Tacoma about 3 years ago. It needed a lot of TLC, and I just didn't have the time to put the work into it that was needed, so when an acquaintance kept asking about buying it, I sold it. And then I almost immediately regretted it. Plus my wife had just seen a new Soul Red ND2, and was prodding me to get another Miata. I could relatively easily afford a new ND, but, at least around here, it's practically impossible to find anything but the Grand Touring RF, which isn't what I would want. Plus, I thought a lot about it, and I just love the classic styling of the NA, and how it evokes the British sports cars of even earlier generations. It's the car I fell in love with years ago. So instead I looked around and got a nice clean '96 with just under 100K miles, and I couldn't be happier.

What more could a NA with 200k need besides a engine and tranny rebuild and fluid flush. Thats all maybe new brakes should of kept it.

The green on that NA is one of the most gorgeous colors ever applied to a car! The tan top and peanut butter interior make got a very handsome overall package.

The center vent matches the tail lights. The lane departure can be turned off with a button above your left knee. It stays off permanently. I shut it off leaving the dealer lot, hasn't been back in since.

Interesting point you make that if you only have space/economy or want one car, maybe the ND is the better way to go. We have a Mazda 6 2.5 -08 which is a great hauler and fun daily driver. So we naturally bought an NA -91 and I love how open and bare bone it is. My gf is using it as her daily to work and it really shines on the weekends when going for a drive. Kids are staring and pointing thinking that it’s some expensive sports car and adults are just smiling and waving! The best thing is that we have a car that can wave back at them ;)

Both! As a ‘96 NA M-Edition owner, you can’t go wrong either way. They’re both excellent cars.
The old one is a bit draining by virtue of being so immersive, which isn’t ideal if you have somewhere important to be... but that’s also why I love it. :) Newer car has far better crash safety though. For an ND, I’d spring for the soft top though.

I bought a ‘96 M as well. Like you said you can’t go wrong with either IMO. Life’s too short to drive boring cars.

The ND miata is about 2.5inches wider which is why the NA feels smaller. Also the ND miata seats might sit up slightly, but is actual height and length are equal or smaller than a ND. Either way a narrow cabin (ND) which is even narrower (NA) will make it feel smaller. Same with the better sight lines. Lastly the weight difference is signicnant when comparing a softtop NA to a RF ND

16 here and saving up for my first car. I think seeing this amazing spec of the NA really sold the deal for me. Ive already driven the NA as my uncle has one, and I definitely understand what people mean when they say its a drivers car, and I love it.

A bit late to comment but I choose both! Got a 95’ M Edition and I just picked up a 21’ Club ND with the Recaro package. Keeping the ND as a daily and the NA as my project car!

I disagree about the LSD being a NEED on a Miata. I would get one because I drive cars relatively hard. But the average person buying a Miata is likely to cruise and not have the rear end slip that often. Even then, if Mazda wanted they could do torque vectoring by braking and save weight. That is exactly what Mclaren has done on almost every road production car they have ever built. Guess what? No one complains because its almost impossible to notice, yet they almost always have the fastest track times compared to Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, etc.

I would think that by reversing the wires behind the roof switch (or flipping it over if possible) the desired relation between roof up and down and the switch direction , can be achieved . Just a guess. And I'm not sure if that would cause damage either.

9:35 my 94 Miata c package does the same thing. Squeaky seats! I also have a cobalt catback and 205/50/15 tires. Just have raceland suspension and a cat delete. Despite the superior daily ability of the ND (I’ve thought about getting an ND alongside my NA) the charm of an old, basic, simple sports car with no modern nannies is superior. NA is the best.
