Yup, gothic 2 is one of my favourite games of all time. It doesn't hold your hand and you feel like you're actually playing an RPG. i wish there was more games like that.

As a German myself, living just a few kilometers away from Berlin aka the Domed City, I can confirm this as truth. And with the release of Gothic II version 6.2 aka Elex 2, our forests have also been upgraded to feature big badass wolves and jackals. We here in Germany are very VERY proud of our forests.
Ok so I love Germany, have been to many great cities and towns. Munich, Koln, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf even Hamburg which used to have a bad name years ago but I found charming and had a very pleasant time. Berlin.. Was different. In the two days we stayed there a pusher tried to sell us drugs, basically in the streets, a drunken gentleman of Turkish descent made some very colourful remarks on my girl at the time, when she waved him off he started pushing her with considerable force. Maybe I'm a coward but we ran away(the gentleman wasn't alone btw and fighting strangers in a strange city seemed like a bad idea). The day of the departure another gentleman tried to pickpocket us. Thankfully he was a "pro" because the moment he saw we caught him he said something like :"sorry, my mistake" and quickly walked away. So Germany is cool and fun, Berlin an aquired taste
it's a great RPG, but it's it's second for me: Fallout: New Vegas takes 1st place in my heart, sry. Maybe because I'm not German (Russian living in Russia).

But I only played the console version and that years after release. It may have been different on pc when the games were new and that impression then stuck.
This review embodies the exact feelings i had when i forced myself to complete risen 2. It was hands down the worst game i've ever played. Had the worst combat, the worst story, the worst movement and looting system. But for some reason I pushed through the pain in such a manner that it seems I was trying to prove myself something. I agree with :thinking: out of 10 because in addition to the hours lost of my life playing the game, I wasted more contemplating what my life had become.
Risen 2 was absolute garbage indeed. But the first one was pretty good. Nice world, the combat was fun on melee. The items and magic trees were complete trash, though.
Risen 3 still baffles me plot-wise. They somehow thought it would make sense to to reveal that your romantic interest of the first two games is somehow your sister.
When I finished the game in roughly 48 hours or something, I saw that I had around 12 hours of loading screen, since I died that much in the game. The combat is quite challenging and I didn't use a flamethrower, other than that good game!
I thought the Risen 1 combat was fine, not great, but something that they should have kept and improved on. Instead, they made this mess of a combat system, that get's worse with every game, somehow...
Gothic 2 combat was solid too if You understood how it all works. Both were fine but enemy combat ai was damn too predoctable. Now they just keep giving us edited Risen 2 bullshit combat systems.
Nah, ELEX has a brand new system, completely different from everything they did. Gothic 1 and 2 had it's own system, G3 had it's own... ugh... "system", Risen 1 got it's own and so on... and ELEX got it's own. More complex than anything they did before. And the only downside is... well, two: 1) It's 100% based on skill... if you're not very good at it and precise as hell, you will die a lot... 2) The game doesn't mention the existence of Evade move.....
You realize I was talking only about melee combat? And how is evading any amount of damage garbage? Evade is the best move in the game and even better than in Dark Souls, because it takes about 0.3 seconds. It's just very hard to master.
You do realize NPCs are not the only enemies in the game? Yes, NPCs are easy to cheese out because they're slow, dumb and slow. I was able to clear out that stupid bandit camp near the beginning on my own, without any help. Took some time, but it was pretty easy to do. Now say the same thing about creatures. Tell me more about how you can cheese out that stupid satan-wolf whih can randomly chain 3 attacks one after another. With creatures you need to play skillfully.
I've mentioned both monsters and NPCs man. Read carefully, please. NPCs part was just extra to mention how their abilities are nerfed compared to player character same moves. "Tell me more about how you can cheese out that stupid satan-wolf whih can randomly chain 3 attacks one after another." Dude, seriously You suck as fuck in this game. It is rare to monster trigger any attack lol except them walking around like idiot. But eventually when You trigger their attacks lol (which are not fast, You probably didn't saw fast attacks in games), AS I SAID BEFORE step minimaly left or right, they will hit air eventually combo the air lol. If You can't move left/right while locked on enemy (when You are disabled mentally or something) just block blockable monster attacks, even without shield it is effective as fuck. Never fully deplete Your stamina too.
So... does it not run well on FX processors? I'd actually like to know this, I've got an 8300 myself and was looking forward to getting this game. All I need is a Vega, and I'm set for Winter!

In Poland, both Gothic games are basically a cult series (Gothic 3 was... so-so). That is because it mostly because of a more-or-less professional voice overs (it was a rarity despite full dialogue translation), the open world with full day/night cycles that blew minds (Morrowind had static NPCs at the time) and we didn't even mind clunky controls. Funny fact: a lot of Polish players thought it was a Polish game, because on how similar in tones it was with Witcher novels* rather than "high fantasy" D&D with clear morality system. Not even Der Schwatze Auge/The Dark Eye (the German pen&paper roleplay) was close in such dark tones. *Witcher novels date back to 1986, contrary to the popular belief NOT being written after the video game but way around.
just finished this game and absolutely LOVED it. this was vastly different than Gothic or risen but with the same incredible deep RPG elements, great characters and interesting story.

As a german I find this surprisingly accurate You could also get a strong axe in early game of Gothic 1 which did 3 times more damage than the strongest weapon you could buy then so you became OP
I am not a German, but I love this game.. Sure, I only played it after all the patches, but those didn't change any of the core design choices. Such as combat system, which I like. Yes, you are supposed to suffer if you make dumb choices and only try to spam attack expecting to easily kill everything. This I always liked about PB games - you need to run away from many enemies in early games and grow your character. That's how it should be.

I have very fond memories of Gothic 3 though I recognize how extremely flawed the game is.
The world just felt so comfy to me.

And the only downside is... well, two: 1) It's 100% based on skill... if you're not very good at it and precise as hell, you will die a lot... 2) The game doesn't mention the existence of Evade move.....
You realize I was talking only about melee combat? And how is evading any amount of damage garbage? Evade is the best move in the game and even better than in Dark Souls, because it takes about 0.3 seconds. It's just very hard to master.
You do realize NPCs are not the only enemies in the game? Yes, NPCs are easy to cheese out because they're slow, dumb and slow. I was able to clear out that stupid bandit camp near the beginning on my own, without any help. Took some time, but it was pretty easy to do. Now say the same thing about creatures. Tell me more about how you can cheese out that stupid satan-wolf whih can randomly chain 3 attacks one after another. With creatures you need to play skillfully.
I've mentioned both monsters and NPCs man. Read carefully, please.
NPCs part was just extra to mention how their abilities are nerfed compared to player character same moves.

Dude, seriously You suck as fuck in this game.
It is rare to monster trigger any attack lol except them walking around like idiot. But eventually when You trigger their attacks lol (which are not fast, You probably didn't saw fast attacks in games), AS I SAID BEFORE step minimaly left or right, they will hit air eventually combo the air lol. If You can't move left/right while locked on enemy (when You are disabled mentally or something) just block blockable monster attacks, even without shield it is effective as fuck. Never fully deplete Your stamina too.
As a Gothic 1 and 2 fan, I found this review hilarious and on the point. Good work sir.

Getting ads for ELEX 2 before watching this. What a blessed timeline we're in.
In Poland, both Gothic games are basically a cult series (Gothic 3 was... so-so). That is because it mostly because of a more-or-less professional voice overs (it was a rarity despite full dialogue translation), the open world with full day/night cycles that blew minds (Morrowind had static NPCs at the time) and we didn't even mind clunky controls. Funny fact: a lot of Polish players thought it was a Polish game, because on how similar in tones it was with Witcher novels* rather than "high fantasy" D&D with clear morality system. Not even Der Schwatze Auge/The Dark Eye (the German pen&paper roleplay) was close in such dark tones.
*Witcher novels date back to 1986, contrary to the popular belief NOT being written after the video game but way around.
just finished this game and absolutely LOVED it. this was vastly different than Gothic or risen but with the same incredible deep RPG elements, great characters and interesting story.

You could also get a strong axe in early game of Gothic 1 which did 3 times more damage than the strongest weapon you could buy then so you became OP
I am not a German, but I love this game.. Sure, I only played it after all the patches, but those didn't change any of the core design choices. Such as combat system, which I like. Yes, you are supposed to suffer if you make dumb choices and only try to spam attack expecting to easily kill everything. This I always liked about PB games - you need to run away from many enemies in early games and grow your character.
That's how it should be.

Do all of the things said in the video still hold up? Like the Flamethrower staggering all enemies and being able to rush to the Cleric base.
