Production quality is amazing Sam! It's easy to forget the effort gone to behind setting up certain camera angles and fly bys etc, transitions in the editing, you can really see the quality & execution you're putting into your work!
I remember my purchase as if it was yesterday. MSRP on my car was $91,xxx.xx dollars. Dealer offered $10k off. Back in ‘04 that was a lot of scratch. The slight engine upgrade (X51) - only noticeable at higher RPMs, the cool unique polished wheels, the Turbo front facia, the GT3 side skirts, and the unique interior called my name. I was hooked. I enjoyed that car for three years. The longest I ever kept a car - at that point... I recall it was marginally better in every way over my previous ‘99 996. Enjoying your vids as it brings back great memories. Cheers/B
This is what I love about this channel; variety. Not some random routine boring video always. So many types of videos, appealing to many people, this is amazing! Thanks for all the content Sam! Edit: Loving the HQ intro shots!
This year you have significantly improved already great b-roll and editing. I am glad you still shoot your own footage instead of using prerecorded stuff from manufacturer’s PR department like some other automotive UA-camrs do. I also enjoy the variety of your ideas to explore the cars which you are filming, it’s not just spec sheet rundown. You truly deserve more views, because as a one man crew you’re doing a great job and keep things fresh every time 👍
I have a 1998 996.1 C2. My sixth year starts about now. Ive done about 5000-8000 km a year of which about 70% is quality kilometers on B-roads. Ive done many things with my car. Had the engine off my first winter, did the usual IMSB, thermostat, water pump etc. I have the Bilstein B16 kit, Powerbush polyurethane bushes, Eibach rear AR-bar, three sets of tyres, one set on RS-sized OZ Alleggeritas. I honestly dont think that I feel happier anywhere as driving my 996. I feel free, in control, concentrated, even enjoying sceneries. I feel gratitude beyond words.
You are by far my favorite car UA-cam Sam. New interesting content. I have watched Paul and James for a long time but have actually got bored with their content. Keep the great work up Sam👍🏻👏🏻
I’ve watched your channel from the 4c days and now I can’t get enough of your content. Your videos on the Porsche world and specifically the 996 inspired me to get my own 2003 Porsche Carrera 4S. I can’t thank you enough, best car purchase I’ve made!
Irony is that early cars were all pretty much the same size, until the 996, which felt enormous when it debuted. Incidentally, the build quality also went off a cliff in 1999. When I bought a 996 in 2002 to go with my 964’s, it also felt so much slower on the backroads and so much disconnected from the driving experience. I really feel a well sorted 964/993 cannot be beat for sheer driving pleasure on a back road. That said, my next edition is likely a 992 for daily liveability, and thank god the build-quality is not the plastic, fall-apart, budget experience of the 996... Great video, as always, thanks Sam!
You have to keep the 996. Hate the lights at the front, but you always have smile on your face when you talk about it. It’s a keeper! Another great video mate😎
Love the video and the 996. Well done Porsche for making PCCM+ available too. I have a 992 C2S Cab. Beautiful interior but I'm not bowled over by it's awful ride quality and uncomfortable 14 way seats.
Just want to say your enthusiasm cheers me up, I enjoy your shots and editing, and I love the music you choose. You have the gift of gab and an effervescent quality that makes you a pleasure to listen to. Cheers from Seattle
@STG Sam like I told TGE, two years ago, "officially", there is no Carrera (2)S version on the 996 Model Range, only the Carrera 4S... Although you could consider the “911 40 Jahre” version, an almost “2S” version, you can't consider it a "GTS", because it doesn't have the "bits" that makes it, an "S" version, like the chassis, brakes and suspensions of the "Turbo" models, which it happens on the "4S" version... Also, it's factory standard X51 Power Kit boosting 345hp, could also be ordered, as an option, on any of the other 996.2 "Carrera" versions, even the "4S", at the dealership... 😎 Best Regards
Thanks Sam, great video. I was planning on buying that same unit for my 986S but I kept having weird problems with the car and sold it to a Porsche mechanic who figured out what was wrong and he’s having a great time. I’m very happy for him 👍. Keep up the great content, hoping for more travel content once it’s possible again!
Sam, you know what I like most about your reviews? You have so mach joy with cars - especially Porsche - and it shines through. Like a little boy fun who knows what he is talking about (only positive) - which is infectious very good! Love it. :)
Another great video Sam. As a UA-cam car enthusiast who has never been in a 911 I am full of opinions! I think your video reinforces the point that the 996 is a great value. I like NA manual transmission. I like lighter and smaller. If I buy a Porsche, I think it will either be a 996 911, or a 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 stick. Both are lighter. Have NA manual transmissions. The 718 has the advantage of warrantee and modern interior. The 996 is a contender and offers better value having run out its depreciation curve. I think your 996 is a winner particularly with the modern infotainment system.
Great video as always. Loved that flexing of your editing skills with the 992 at STG HQ 😉 Also really love what Porsche does with their retro infotainment stuff. In my 944, I went for a Blaupunkt DAB unit instead though, as it is looking even more period correct.
992 is more angular , more racy looking than previous gens. Love the sharper interior but needs more buttons on that gloss black piece. Best part is the sound, truly impressive in person and with sport cats , glorious flat six right there. Fantastic work Sam.
Extremely well done. Technical work (thoughtful shot selection, stellar edit, great narrative arc woven in) plus interesting content = winner. The effort shows.
when i saw the PCCM was a thing and available i was blown away. brilliant idea and glad you installed it. looks fantastic and works the part. 996roadtrip was the first install i saw. so happy you made this choice as well. can't wait to have a 996, odd to dream about a factory installed head unit on an old car. lol cheers.
Beautiful dark blue on the 992! Love seeing Porsche being one of the last to not reserve the manual gearbox for highly limited special runs. Fascinating comparison! I'm always impressed by how characteristics are being carried through generations, even dozens of years apart 🚙💨
The c2 was essentially an S from the start it seems. The 997.1 c2 was identical to the 996.2 c2. Porsche evolution suggests that a 996 “non S” would have been a more sparse and loose version of the “s”.
Watched you channel for a few years now sam, since u got ur first mclaren and u have constantly upped the quality of ur videos and love the different content you keep bringing. Level above all the other people doing car content... keep it up fella. If u even need any recommendations for roads come up to Northumberland and over to Alston..
This so simple, the older I get the more 911s I own. The only one I don't like was my 996 Turbo and it's gone. Ready for a 992 but I can't afford it anymore. YES I liked and I'm subscribed...
Great vid Sam! Spot on re your comparison on the 996 v 992. I’ve had a 996.2 and ordered a 992 for June delivery; while it’s an evolution the similar feeling carries through. Btw what’s the opening into music? Great choice. Keep up the great work 👍🏽!
Jesus Sam! Just watching your videos are just amazing! I’ve been watching since your 4C days and you’ve evolved incredibly. Your videos are absolutely incredible but your still yourself. Love the vids man!
Great piece as ever Sam thank you. Cars I regret selling include a 996 C4S cab manual, real world properly fast car...your enthusiasm for 996 might get prices moving, need to act fast! That PCCM+ upgrade says everything about Porsche and the continuity across the decades, kinda reminds me of the Leica M system, there is no 'redundancy' . When I look at Aston, Ferrari etc each era is fragmented and sadly factory support for the 20 year old Astons especially is shamefully poor.
Such an incredible car Sam 😍 So happy that you got this and your planning lots of adventures with it! So many other UA-camrs get press cars for trips or buy a car for a trip then sell it straight away but you've proved you really use your cars with 'drive the world' and the adventures to come with this car! 👏🙌
I was never a 911 headlight fan. LOVED the slant nose look and really like the 718 and Tycon headlights. Wish the 911 would follow suit and dump the roundies.. Amazing tech inside.
Good job. Now comparing that final 996.2 vs the first 996.1 base with manual would be interesting. The 3.4 motor zippier rev range but most feel a little lacking in torque where 3.6 solidly always delivers. Alas, fatal bore scoring of 3.6 motors (almost unheard if in 3.4) readily exceeds IMS fails and there is no pro active replacement. 3.6 blocks now hard to acquire. Yes, I own these cars, yes a friends Boxster blew its IMS last week. These cars are still a thrill/reward to drive....
Recently picked up a 2013 Cayman and it’s had a very similar mod but it uses the existing unit. Gives it full CarPlay and Android auto, couldn’t live without it, worth every penny.
My 996 came (used) with springs, 996 GT3 size wheels and tires.. all very inexpensive upgrades. With a set of PS4S's on them, I really believe my 996 handles better than the 991.2 I drove and comparable to the 997 Turbo I drove. I'd really recommend these upgrades for you 996, Sam!
Loving the Porsche content, Sam. I never really liked the 996, but recently I have grown more or a liking for it. Maybe seeing yours has helped, I couldn’t say. I’ve always liked the 997 or 993 or the classics from 70’s as it’s that proper Porsche look ( non ‘fried egg’ look) as you say. It does grown on you though. Keep up the great work
Not exactly a revelation to hear in this video that these wonderful vehicles have evolved over the years. Really do like your 996 40 Jahre, a great choice of car. Thank you.
That PCM upgrade actually gives the 996 a better infotainment system than even a 991.1 (for which no factory upgrades exist). As sports car enthusiasts, I know we shouldn’t care about such things but it really helps in a car that you intend to se as a daiky driver. Used 996s just got way more appealing to me.
Why am I watching Porsche videos despite living in Stuttgart and seeing them everyday? Ah right....its Sam from STG. Thats why!
Grüße aus Weissach! 😂😂
Haha legend
Uv seen him through the glass. His whole persona embodies Stuttgart Passion! 👍 😄 👍
Production quality is amazing Sam! It's easy to forget the effort gone to behind setting up certain camera angles and fly bys etc, transitions in the editing, you can really see the quality & execution you're putting into your work!
Really appreciate that! Having fun making the videos at the moment even if a bit hand tied by COVID restrictions
Loving all this Porsche content Sam! You’ve singlehandedly made me fall in love with the 996 design 😂
Good choice!
Contrary to the majority, I love the 996 and dream of having one in my garage… It’s a timeless beauty
They're a true 911 in every way.
I'd love a 996.1 with GT3 wing and clear indicators, it should not be black or gray. I hate the .2 headlights.
I would have the size, weight and engine of the 996, the styling of the 991 and the interior of the 992.
Yes! Although I couldn’t care less about styling and interior when I’m behind the wheel of my 996 ;)
991.1 or the 991.2 Style ?
@@therealone2958 991.2 but very close
So you want a 997.2 with an updated interior...
And how much would you pay for touring version of that with 500hp and 2800lbs?
Asking too see if there would be market for such a car
Sam, you can take all the time you need for an upload. This is brilliant!
Thanks mate!
Your best when talking about your own cars great episode.
I appreciate that!
It’s actually really cool seeing a manufacturer care about the people who own their older generation cars
over 70% of all 911's ever made, are still on the road ... the owners REALLY CARE too.
I remember my purchase as if it was yesterday. MSRP on my car was $91,xxx.xx dollars. Dealer offered $10k off. Back in ‘04 that was a lot of scratch. And PCCM actually has Android Auto too! This is such a huge thing. Thanks for talking about this. Makes me really want a CPO Porsche now.
The production quality and editing in your videos is amazing. 🙌🙌
Glad you think so!
This is what I love about this channel; variety. Not some random routine boring video always. So many types of videos, appealing to many people, this is amazing! Thanks for all the content Sam!
Edit: Loving the HQ intro shots!
Wow, thank you!
Love the cinematics of the cars in STG HQ!
Thanks! Having fun filming the cars in the space
You’ve made me think twice on the 992 vs my 997.2 and I must say your content has gotten so much better.
I love that you put the modern infotainment into the 996 - it just works
Glad that we are getting content regularly!
996 all day!!! The narrow bodies are looking better day by day!

Glad you enjoyed it!
2:50 don’t know why but you saying fat ass cracks me up, almost sounds as out of place as you yelling ALRIGHT TREACLE
It's such an American phrase that hearing Sam utter it in his posh British accent just catches you off guard.
You have to keep the 996. Hate the lights at the front, but you always have smile on your face when you talk about it. It’s a keeper! Another great video mate😎
I really should stop being surprised by yet another brilliant video. Thanks Sam 👍🏻

as much as that blue 992 is kinda my dream spec current gen 911...i still think 911s peaked with the 997
Got to love a Sunday stg vid! Really interested to know hoe you experienced the manual 992
Going to be chatting about it on the podcast!

Porsche has never made a car as beautiful as the 996. A close second is the 987 Cayman. Both designed by Pinky Lai. He’s an artist.
