When I first purchased my 40 Jahre back in June, after years of always being "1 day late" locating the right one, I did a similar baseline major service with many of the same points you did... Refused to REALLY drive it until after my local Porsche specialist was able to complete the work. I was so excited for that first drive once I picked it up... And it did not disappoint. Such connection with the car. I've owned as well as driven Porsches covering the gamut over the years, but the 40 Jahre is the happy medium I had been searching for all along. Us 40 Anniversary owners are really enjoying your spotlight series of a true hidden-gem underdog. You're truly honoring one of Porsche's greats!
I think you’ve done exactly the right thing, (given the age of the car). There’s a big safety aspect involved, when fully exploiting the performance, of a fast car! Keep up the good work, very informative!

Fellow 40th Anniversary owner here. If it makes you feel any better I too have spent over £10k getting mine up to spec! Totally worth it though and very satisfying. I too have the Dansk sports silencers and think they sound great. Enjoy driving the car Sam! :-)
Parts are cheap and they are easy to work on... just do it yourself. Most of the items can be seen as normal service items for a 18 year old car. Just show me an 18yr old car that doesn’t need brakes, hoses, ball joints exhaust etc, if you do it just means they have been done already. All those saying money pit and get Jap... are sitting in their mums lounge typing before doing their home work. They have never owned or have a clue about cars.
I'm a Porsche enthusiast. Owned two - a 1962 356b super 90 and a 1980, 911targa, in another life when I was cat. Regret ever selling them. Your video was interesting, informative and really enhanced with Tom's contribution, thank you.
Fantastic video. Enjoyed the content. You are fortunate to have such a cool/knowledgeable technician. I purchased mine new in the summer of ‘04. I recall how special the seats were; unique color and perforation. The wheels were unique too with a unique paint/patina. The Turbo side sills and front fascia were unique to the car too, not to mention the X51? engine performance enhancements. What a car! Traded it in on a competitor a few years later. Regretted it. It was a significant improvement over my previously new ‘99 996. Kept the luggage set & the wallet. I use the wallet today... My first mod was a muffler bypass. It was mega loud. Can’t wait to hear the Dansk. This car deserves more recognition! The 50 Year Anniversary always gets significantly more admiration & recognition... GL & enjoy! Cheers, B

Your unique approach to car content really is enjoyable. Seeing these modern classics 360 Modena & 911 being taken care of, improved & used is so interesting & it makes me aspire to do the same at some point in the next 5 years or so. These are the cars I was dreaming about in my teenage years, I hope we'll be able to enjoy them for a long time still (because regulations, petrol ban & whatnot make it uncertain) and given how modern sportscars are becoming too big & too fast.
These cars just make me so much more excited and passionate than so many modern ones. Yes they have costs associated and need looking after but thats part of the experience!
Tom looks after a couple of cars for me which are both daily drivers, his service levels are second to none, and he always always always spends time with me working out the best way to address any work to be done. I cannot recommend him highly enough!

Seems that these guys are Porsche specialists, with that in mind i'm sure it was in great hands.. but can understand your feelings on the bill. Tom knows his stuff, these guys are the VF of Porsche to you now, going over everything and improving where needed. (Like the braided brake hoses) Love the honesty on here Sam, always documenting the ups and downs of owning these cars, makes for great videos!
A really fabulous video. Rarely does someone sell a car privately that is 110% serviced and ready to go. Most are selling to avoid the bills ahead ! But at least you know the work has been done and you have peace of mind and lots of fun miles ahead.
Tom put his knowledge across in a easy to understand and succinct way, very good orator that would be super interesting on your podcast. If I was in the market for a cheap 996, he would definitely be my first port of this call afterwards, and seeing what you can buy them for, I’d have no problem giving him £10-£15 after, knowing that it’d be properly sorted

Sam, also check the following: Water pump, engine mounts, AOS, air box filter, shocks and struts, coolant tank update to stronger plastic, serpentine belt, thermostat. Best of luck, reach out if you have any questions.
Positive: Worth noting that if you took apart any 16-20yr old car and looked to replace parts in this way. You'd run up a list at least this long on (name your favourite dull 'my cars never needed anything but an mot' reliable car). This is the kind of work people do because these cars are worth keeping on the road another 20 yrs. Hats off to you for saving this one well done. Negative: Very sorry to hear about your bore scoring. I've personally bore scoped three M96 engines for myself/friends, and by fluke they make useful data points, a 60k mile car (3.6ltr) a 124k mile example (3.6ltr) and a 181k mile example (3.4ltr). The 181k mile car was the only car with any visible marking and probably similar to yours, they were only very faint lines (cyl 6) in the direction of piston travel. I'm convinced from my own experience that this is due to history and maintenance more than anything to do with age, use or mileage related wear. These cars tend to be used infrequently and can go 4-5 years without an oil change even with a full history (on mileage). Oil is hydroscopic 'attracts and absorbs water' and water in the oil means that it cannot support high loads without the oil film breaking down and letting metal on metal contact occur. Changing oil on time as well as mileage is critical to look for in a car's history if you want to guarantee a healthy engine. Secondly, the cooling circuits are by their nature longer, more complex and further from the warmth of the engine than on most cars (opposite end to the engine). This means that they are more prone to corrosion and leaks. Running a car with a leaky cooling system means the coolant isn't pressurised and can boil at a lower temperature. This means in the hottest parts of the engine (like around cylinder 6 where it exits) it can locally boil and get air bubbles, which cause hot spots/overheating. Very bad for an engine. Summary: I believe that the M96/M97 (near identical engine) in the 996/997 cars is a tough mother of an engine. I drove my high milage 996 like it was stolen daily and took it to track/on tour without even a hint of concern, overheating or trouble. I highly suspect that now these cars are getting older and garages/owners are getting wiser to how to maintain the water cooled cars, the ones that are left, particularly ones looked after as you are with this car, will prove to be very reliable cars in the long run. They're not afraid of hard work or proper use, they'll out lap your favourite Japanese car on any track day. They only die of neglect and ignorance.
it will make the car a lot nicer to drive having those parts replaced, but the piece of mind itself will make it more enjoyable. I love the 40th anniversary car. wish i could afford one. I'm glad you're taking the time to set it up well before driving it around. thanks for sharing. edit to say I agree with the others that Tom is quite interesting and easy to listen to.

Often when these performance cars become affordable, they are bought by new owners who can afford to buy them but not properly fix or run them. I was in this situation with a 2006 Audi S4 a few years ago. Buying it was no issue, but afterwards I racked up repair bills of £3k for stuff ignored by the previous owner. I learnt that although I'd bought an £8k car, actually I was buying an £11k car! At Sam's level it's a £35k car which is actually a £45k car. Still, far more original and nicer choice than other YT'ers out there. He has excellent motoring taste.

I appreciate the information. .....and yes, it's easy to get a surprise bill when you add just a little here....just a little there. I paid $18,000 USD for the clutch change on my Murcielago Roadster because....while we're in there lol

I’ve just been doing the same things to my 996 C4S. Brake lines, RMS/IMS and clutch, suspension arms all round. It was expensive but it was so worth it... I’ve now got a car that feels like new.

Hi Sam, great video, lovely car, looking forward to getting my one sometime soon. I have been researching them for a few years now and I know there's an awful lot of bad press on the Internet, but I'm still not put off. Having been a motorcycle mechanic previously, I love finding out the reasons behind the problems that the 996 / 997.1 engines suffered from. One of the main one's (there are a few) is over heating of cylinder bank 2, with cylinder 6 being the worst affected. Long story short, one of the ways to try and minimise bore scoring, is to fit a cooler running thermostat. Also if you want to read up on it from one of the country's leading authorities on porsche engine building, Hartech Engineering. Just do a Google search for Hartech pdf. And download the Hartech engine rebuilds (interim) . Quite a long read, but very informative. Hope this helps and enjoy your 996 👍
Is this the 911 anniversary that I saw advertised at Sarah Cox Cars a few months ago? I took a look at this and was lamenting not purchasing but perhaps my pockets wouldn't have done it justice considering the repairs - massive respect to you for keeping this car beautiful and sound, and doing the work needed.

Good review. I'd be quite happy paying that bill and knowing that these cars are very likely to appreciate in value, and if so you'd get that money back in no time if you decide to sell in the future.
My 996 had pretty much the same list of faults. I'm slowly getting round to fixing all the little things after doing the main issues. It sort of fun, in a stupidly expensive way. :-) Look forward to more updates
Didn't have a problem with my IMS in over 2 years of everyday driving. I wish the same could be said of the A.O separator which had 2 in no time at all. Regarding the exhaust I had a Dansk Sports fitted which sounded so much better than the OEM part. Enjoy fella. Yours is only going 1 way value wise..👍👍
For the naysayers here...I have three BMWs, an F30, an e37, and an E89, all out of warranty. I do my own wrenching. If you want to drive a fine, rewarding automobile, it can be expensive. If I drove a Nissan or Honda or Toyota, it’d be much cheaper. And I’d feel dead inside. I’m thrilled to see the rejuvenation of this fine Porsche. It will bring joy.

Excellent video! Very informative. That 996 Anniversary looks so clean too. But I would have expected a 911 with full Porsche service history to be flawless mechanically. Doesn't seem worth the cost to maintain the dealer service history when they manage to miss all the stuff on inspection.
Really interesting video. Surprised that with Porsche service history the brake fluid and spark plugs have not been done. Shown that full OPC history can mean nothing and what were the previous owners thinking? Skipping brake fluid is bonkers! The workshop looked a good set up and solid advice from Tom. I have a 996 turbo videos like this really help.
I think the previous owner was a bit of a home mechanic and probably told them to leave some jobs he thought he could do himself and never got round to
Bought a 40th Anniversary Jahre myself in June took it for a test drive the brakes were scary. Got the garage to fix some other issues around the car creaking suspension heated seats not working etc but didn’t trust them with the brakes looking to cut corners they resurfaced the discs etc which helped a bit to get it home but basically the discs were worn out and too thin. Had replacement discs pads braided hoses and fluid change much improved now. The Porsche specialist advised that they think the engine has already had a rebuild different colour sealant on the centre casing which wasn’t in the paperwork no bad thing if it was done right 🤞cars at 96k now. Other than that it got a clean bill of health won’t use it now until the spring but recognise all those issues you have from a C4s 996 Ebay purchase everything was wrong with that replaced the lot cost a fortune. I’ll never buy another car unseen at the other end of the country with a description of Well Sorted in it. Good luck with your 996 looking forward to more videos and you no doubt know there’s a register for these.

Hi Sam, Tom has looked after my 996 C4S for over 4 years and I wouldn't go anywhere else. And of the 19 items on your list my 2003 (50k miles) car needed about 16 of them attending to over the 4 years, including the IMS bearing...
What a great guy Tom is, steeped in Porsche Knowledge....also, if I'm not mistaken, what sounds quite like a Potteries accent. (I was brought up there)

It would be interesting to see a comparison of an Official Porsche Centre operating the Porsche Classic scheme versus an Independent Specialist in regard to inspection list and proposed cost for the job. For me buying a complete car ready to go from a recognised dealer in these cars may be the best route. Quite right to get everything done on yours and fingers crossed the car came to you at a good price. Great choice of car. Wishing you many miles of happy motoring.
I still feel weird about the chrome wheels .. I do like the 996 after seeing "Gone in 60 Seconds" but i'd rather have a 993 for sure. Or a 930 Turbo if they are still somewhat affordable(I doubt they are).

Positive: Worth noting that if you took apart any 16-20yr old car and looked to replace parts in this way. You'd run up a list at least this long on (name your favourite dull 'my cars never needed anything but an mot' reliable car). This is the kind of work people do because these cars are worth keeping on the road another 20 yrs. Hats off to you for saving this one well done.
Negative: Very sorry to hear about your bore scoring. I've personally bore scoped three M96 engines for myself/friends, and by fluke they make useful data points, a 60k mile car (3.6ltr) a 124k mile example (3.6ltr) and a 181k mile example (3.4ltr). The 181k mile car was the only car with any visible marking and probably similar to yours, they were only very faint lines (cyl 6) in the direction of piston travel. I'm convinced from my own experience that this is due to history and maintenance more than anything to do with age, use or mileage related wear.
These cars tend to be used infrequently and can go 4-5 years without an oil change even with a full history (on mileage). Oil is hydroscopic 'attracts and absorbs water' and water in the oil means that it cannot support high loads without the oil film breaking down and letting metal on metal contact occur. Changing oil on time as well as mileage is critical to look for in a car's history if you want to guarantee a healthy engine.
Secondly, the cooling circuits are by their nature longer, more complex and further from the warmth of the engine than on most cars (opposite end to the engine). This means that they are more prone to corrosion and leaks. Running a car with a leaky cooling system means the coolant isn't pressurised and can boil at a lower temperature. This means in the hottest parts of the engine (like around cylinder 6 where it exits) it can locally boil and get air bubbles, which cause hot spots/overheating. Very bad for an engine.
Summary: I believe that the M96/M97 (near identical engine) in the 996/997 cars is a tough mother of an engine. I drove my high milage 996 like it was stolen daily and took it to track/on tour without even a hint of concern, overheating or trouble. I highly suspect that now these cars are getting older and garages/owners are getting wiser to how to maintain the water cooled cars, the ones that are left, particularly ones looked after as you are with this car, will prove to be very reliable cars in the long run. They're not afraid of hard work or proper use, they'll out lap your favourite Japanese car on any track day. They only die of neglect and ignorance.
it will make the car a lot nicer to drive having those parts replaced, but the piece of mind itself will make it more enjoyable. I love the 40th anniversary car. wish i could afford one. I'm glad you're taking the time to set it up well before driving it around. thanks for sharing. edit to say I agree with the others that Tom is quite interesting and easy to listen to.

Often when these performance cars become affordable, they are bought by new owners who can afford to buy them but not properly fix or run them. I was in this situation with a 2006 Audi S4 a few years ago. Buying it was no issue, but afterwards I racked up repair bills of £3k for stuff ignored by the previous owner. I learnt that although I'd bought an £8k car, actually I was buying an £11k car! At Sam's level it's a £35k car which is actually a £45k car. Still, far more original and nicer choice than other YT'ers out there. He has excellent motoring taste.

I’ve just been doing the same things to my 996 C4S. Brake lines, RMS/IMS and clutch, suspension arms all round. It was expensive but it was so worth it... I’ve now got a car that feels like new.

Hi Sam, great video, lovely car, looking forward to getting my one sometime soon. I have been researching them for a few years now and I know there's an awful lot of bad press on the Internet, but I'm still not put off. Having been a motorcycle mechanic previously, I love finding out the reasons behind the problems that the 996 / 997.1 engines suffered from. One of the main one's (there are a few) is over heating of cylinder bank 2, with cylinder 6 being the worst affected. Long story short, one of the ways to try and minimise bore scoring, is to fit a cooler running thermostat.
Also if you want to read up on it from one of the country's leading authorities on porsche engine building, Hartech Engineering.
Just do a Google search for Hartech pdf. And download the Hartech engine rebuilds (interim) .

My 996 had pretty much the same list of faults. I'm slowly getting round to fixing all the little things after doing the main issues. It sort of fun, in a stupidly expensive way. :-) Look forward to more updates

Didn't have a problem with my IMS in over 2 years of everyday driving. I wish the same could be said of the A.O separator which had 2 in no time at all. Regarding the exhaust I had a Dansk Sports fitted which sounded so much better than the OEM part. Enjoy fella. Yours is only going 1 way value wise..👍👍
Brilliant vid. I've got an early 99 car (1st production month for USA 996s), so I love any content on these "unloved" 911s.
Best one to get, double row IMS bearing and different cylinder bore coating means much less chance of bore scoring.

For the naysayers here...I have three BMWs, an F30, an e37, and an E89, all out of warranty. I do my own wrenching. If you want to drive a fine, rewarding automobile, it can be expensive. If I drove a Nissan or Honda or Toyota, it’d be much cheaper. And I’d feel dead inside. I’m thrilled to see the rejuvenation of this fine Porsche. It will bring joy.

But I would have expected a 911 with full Porsche service history to be flawless mechanically. Doesn't seem worth the cost to maintain the dealer service history when they manage to miss all the stuff on inspection.
I bought a 2005 Boxster a few years ago, took it to a specialist, came back with 2 pages of issues... so yours doesn't seem so bad!

Really interesting video. Surprised that with Porsche service history the brake fluid and spark plugs have not been done. Shown that full OPC history can mean nothing and what were the previous owners thinking? Skipping brake fluid is bonkers! The workshop looked a good set up and solid advice from Tom. I have a 996 turbo videos like this really help.
I think the previous owner was a bit of a home mechanic and probably told them to leave some jobs he thought he could do himself and never got round to

Bought a 40th Anniversary Jahre myself in June took it for a test drive the brakes were scary.
Got the garage to fix some other issues around the car creaking suspension heated seats not working etc but didn’t trust them with the brakes looking to cut corners they resurfaced the discs etc which helped a bit to get it home but basically the discs were worn out and too thin.
Had replacement discs pads braided hoses and fluid change much improved now.
The Porsche specialist advised that they think the engine has already had a rebuild different colour sealant on the centre casing which wasn’t in the paperwork no bad thing if it was done right 🤞cars at 96k now.
Other than that it got a clean bill of health won’t use it now until the spring but recognise all those issues you have from a C4s 996 Ebay purchase everything was wrong with that replaced the lot cost a fortune.
I’ll never buy another car unseen at the other end of the country with a description of Well Sorted in it.

Hi Sam, Tom has looked after my 996 C4S for over 4 years and I wouldn't go anywhere else.
And of the 19 items on your list my 2003 (50k miles) car needed about 16 of them attending to over the 4 years, including the IMS bearing...
What a great guy Tom is, steeped in Porsche Knowledge....also, if I'm not mistaken, what sounds quite like a Potteries accent. (I was brought up there)
I have a really good mechanic for my 993....then Tom came along! If I lived closer, he'd definitely be getting my 993 work.
But scary for buyers. Risk worth taking though! Can’t wait to see what you do with it.
Not all cars will need this much work and as I say, I didn't even need to do this much work but can't wait to drive it now!

It would be interesting to see a comparison of an Official Porsche Centre operating the Porsche Classic scheme versus an Independent Specialist in regard to inspection list and proposed cost for the job. For me buying a complete car ready to go from a recognised dealer in these cars may be the best route. Quite right to get everything done on yours and fingers crossed the car came to you at a good price. Great choice of car. Wishing you many miles of happy motoring.
I still feel weird about the chrome wheels .. I do like the 996 after seeing "Gone in 60 Seconds" but i'd rather have a 993 for sure. Or a 930 Turbo if they are still somewhat affordable(I doubt they are).

If you use Fischer braided flexible brake lines, they are TUV approved and can be added to the cars papers, keeping it legal in Germany
Great car. It’s lucky you found it.😅... I’ve bought, 996, M3, minis in the past... same thing. the issue is usually past owners who either don’t care or can’t afford appropriate high-end maintenance.
