Why would anyone be dependent on their temple recommend instead of expressing their faith in the Savior to get in heaven? I guess I’m a bit confused on the subject and feel it’s a bit pharisaical to be worried about an earthly set of rules. I’m sure elder Rasband’s father was a great man but a bit too concerned about the worldly view of his leaders.

Former LDS leaders William Law and John Bennett made similar claims against Smith, citing Rockwell as the shooter...

What a great story of a choice man in the later days. I love the blessings the Lord gave to him because of his faithful to the covenants he had made with the Lord.
Lorin Walker Dibble (29 May 1844-26 June 1888) was the son of Philo Dibble and Hannah Ann Dubois. Philo was prominent in early church history and was one of the first people baptized in Kirtland. It was because of Philo and Hannah that Porter Rockwell spared Lorin’s life that day.
I believe Porter knew it was his time to pass over. I believe Joseph appeared to Porter when he sat up in bed, so Porter put his boots on to follow Joseph (as a symbolic gesture) that unlike Nauvoo, he was not to be denied and was going to follow Joseph this time.
I know there’s zero chance you’ll see this in time, let alone have time, but my sister and I moved here to Lehi, and we’ve got family from out of state visiting this Monday (07/22/24), and I’d love nothing better than to have you give us a tour and share some stories about Porter Rockwell.
That story of Porter and the man who lost the bet teaches us 2 valuable gospel principles: 1. Be prepared. 2. Hesitation can be fatal. Bad man: "I've got you now Rockwell." I came to the comments to see just this. Philo Dibble was my guess and I was hoping it was right. He was an amazing man. My 5th great grandfather gave Philo Dibble a blessing in the middle of a mob fight that he'd been shot in the stomach in and saved his life. On a youth trek several years ago we saw Philo Dibbles name carved into the stone where the Pioneer wagon trains had crossed so they'd know it was a safe trail. 💕
This certainly a different view of Rockwell than the one I heard growing up in the 1960s...but then I'm related to the Aiken Brothers. Our family viewed Rockwell as a murderous snake who was effectively immune from prosecution because of his close ties to Brigham Young.
What is weird is I always thought Porter was never a member of the church. I appreciate you telling the truth about this man. I used to live in Lehi and ate often at “Porters” Loved that place! Does it still exist? The story I grew up with never made sense, but this history totally makes sense.

My mother was a Rockwell. I am distantly related to Porter Rockwell. I believe that Porter was a product of his faith and time.
Explains a lot...! Rockwell always opened fire first, and without warning. Most of the ex-Mormons he murdered were unarmed!

What a great story of a choice man in the later days. I love the blessings the Lord gave to him because of his faithful to the covenants he had made with the Lord.
Lorin Walker Dibble (29 May 1844-26 June 1888) was the son of Philo Dibble and Hannah Ann Dubois. Philo was prominent in early church history and was one of the first people baptized in Kirtland. It was because of Philo and Hannah that Porter Rockwell spared Lorin’s life that day.

I looked exactly like Porter Rockwell when I first join the Church. My bishop asked me if he was part of my family history. Could be.

I believe Porter knew it was his time to pass over. I believe Joseph appeared to Porter when he sat up in bed, so Porter put his boots on to follow Joseph (as a symbolic gesture) that unlike Nauvoo, he was not to be denied and was going to follow Joseph this time.

Regarding Loren Dibble - He was the son of Philo Dibble, who was also one of Joseph Smith's personal body guards.
I came to the comments to see just this. Philo Dibble was my guess and I was hoping it was right. He was an amazing man.
My 5th great grandfather gave Philo Dibble a blessing in the middle of a mob fight that he'd been shot in the stomach in and saved his life.
On a youth trek several years ago we saw Philo Dibbles name carved into the stone where the Pioneer wagon trains had crossed so they'd know it was a safe trail. 💕
This certainly a different view of Rockwell than the one I heard growing up in the 1960s...but then I'm related to the Aiken Brothers. Our family viewed Rockwell as a murderous snake who was effectively immune from prosecution because of his close ties to Brigham Young.

What is weird is I always thought Porter was never a member of the church. I appreciate you telling the truth about this man. I used to live in Lehi and ate often at “Porters” Loved that place! Does it still exist? The story I grew up with never made sense, but this history totally makes sense.
