- There are a lot of great albums that never really get their due. Their only crime? Another album in the band’s discography hogs all the attention. No matter how great the album may be, it can never quite compete with the Classic status of its rival.
HEAVY METALLURGY is celebrating it’s 3-year anniversary by inviting back our very first guest. Aaron joins the show this week to help give some love to those stellar albums that are doomed to always be the runner-up in a band’s discography. Sometimes being Great isn’t enough to avoid being outshined.

Agreed on Sign of the hammer and Under a funeral moon. My favourite albums of those bands.
One that gets overshadowed by the 2 albums before it is Gorgoroth's Under the sign of hell. Also my favourite by them. Lots of signs and stuff to be under.
On the whole death metal pioneering thing: influence plays a big role. Darkness descends sounds a lot more deathy to me than Seven churches. But I guess Chuck was more influenced by Possessed.
Great shirt Alan! I found a copy of the 1985 Euro pressing in great shape on friday. I'd like to think my purchase willed that shirt onto your torso.

Great show, makes me realize how many bands i got into on their 3rd or 4th record and then worked my way backwards. Probably because i got into metal after i had graduated from high school in 86. lol

Really surprised that Celtic Frost's 'Vanity/Nemesis' and Priest's 'Ram it Down' weren't discussed. two CRIMINALLY underrated albums, because the respective preceding records from both are 'the poser album'.
I've always been of the mind that it sometimes helps to arrive to a.band late. Case in point The Dark is easily my favourite Metal Church album. Not being around at the time the debut was out may have added to this.

It is true that Running Wild was called Black Metal here in Germany when they made their first two albums. The weird thing is that the Destruction or Kreator demo tapes were called hardcore. I call everything hardrock.

Interesting to hear Aaron's point about the Metallica Death Metal bootleg. Didn't they also have an early demo tape called Power Metal?
And, as if that weren't enough unlikely genre tags to apply to them...
I also remember reading various things over the years describing their pre-Kill 'Em All material as "glam metal" (because of Hetfield's prior band Leather Charm) and "black metal" (because of the arguable Venom influence on some of the early stuff).

Cheers to three years fellas! I would agree on Manowar to an extent, but I would suggest The Triumph of Steel is the truly overshadowed record thanks to the huge popularity of Kings of Metal. Both great albums, but Kings is certainly more highly regarded. I would also add Alcatrazz because Disturbing the Peace is fantastic (albeit more rock than metal), but after Yngwie that band stopped existing for most folks outside of Japan.

I completely agree with Possessed Seven Churches. Definitely dark thrash. Heck, it's closer to black metal than death metal. Toxic Holocaust also feels similar.
I absolutely love the genre and sub-genre talk. I often times find myself trying to understand why certain bands are considered what they are. Take Kreator. Some of their songs sound very black metal to me. The first Sepultura was very black metal sounding. But then they went to Roots and it sounds like death metal.
Many will praise Rust in Peace by Megadeth as the best thrash metal album of all-time, but it doesn't feel like a thrash metal album to me. Not even sure it sounds like speed metal, either. I remember someone on this channel called Razor speed metal because it's faster than thrash, yet I believe Alan mentioned them in this video as thrash.
Some find it disparaging to consider what is what. But I find it fun and refreshing to be able to hear other opinions on what genre they think something is categorized in.
Genres are nothing more than descriptors to help move a conversation along. At the end of the day, it's all "metal". But yes... the debate is always a fun one to have as everyone processes music differently based on their experiences and perception of what they here. Glad someone out there can agree with my Possessed assessment. I've often been outnumbered in calling Possessed a thrash band. Thanks for watching and for the support!
@@HeavyMetallurgyWhen I was looking to hear the first death metal album I couldn't find it under $20. I finally found a listing on Amazon. Listening I was confused. I thought it sounded more like Venom than Cannibal Corpse. I didn't know what to call it. I decided on blackened thrash, but dark thrash is a fine enough description.
Toxic Holocaust sounds like they took inspiration from Possessed and they are listed as thrash.

3 years already. Oh my, time really flies.
Iron Fist would have been a good pick since the album was supposedly "marred" by Eddies production and rushed song writing, at least according the older generation of fans and the band themselves. Maybe tables are turned by now, but back in the day that albums was not held in high regard, despite being one of their best records in my opinion. I guess managing expectations when following up a no. 1 position on the british charts isn't an easy task.🙄
Iron Fist has a handful of solid tracks. Having spun it again recently though, it just doesn’t hold up for me. Thanks for watching!
The in flames album is good but I prefer lunar strain. Still great choice.
I love that Manowar album but I think the artwork is quite poor and I tend to leave it on the shelf myself.
