It's probably been said a while ago but TCS 1 and 2 isn't just for traction control, it sets all the rider aids to level 1 and 2. Also LiF control doesn't work if you dump the clutch because the electronics can't compute fast enough to decide to intervene, it only works proper when doing power wheelies, that's at least in my 3000 miles of owning a 2021 MT09
I rode this new SP yesterday! They’ve worked absolute wonders with this total overhaul of the 2021 MT-09.. Personally I was impressed with the overall fit & finish of the bike, & my current bike is a big BMW. I thought the engine braking was just right - not too little, & not too much either!.. I was almost tempted to PX my bike for it, but it is just made for shorter ‘B’ road blasts, as opposed to all day rides/tours (with only a 14L fuel tank) which makes it a one-trick pony in my book. So I shall be holding out (another month or so, so the dealer informs me) for the ‘all new’ Tracer-9 GT! After all, it shares exactly the same engine as this, & as you say what an absolute peach of a unit it is indeed... Highly impressed, praise indeed to Yamaha 👏🏻
I would prefer a demonstration of the lift control operation rather than telling me how much lighter is the new IMU in comparison with the old one.....
Nice review. It looks like you had a fun day for sure. There are a lot of hardcore MT fans who aren’t in love with the new stying, like any new model released it can sometimes take a bit of time to fall in love but I agree, I think we will be seeing lots of these on the streets!
As the old Harley guy here looking for a change, technology is good and I’m intrigued by the quick shifter, now if they can have a wheelie control of maybe 2’! (Take my $!)
Well done. It sounds like you told it as it is. Makes a change compared to some. I'm going to the bike shop tomorrow and book a test ride. And if it's as you say. I'm going to buy it. Terry from Sutton.
Ride both and see which YOU prefer, in 2013 I rode both and the power/power wheelies of the 09 were huge fun, but the STR 675 was more composed and faster in the corners despite a 10bhp deficit, I went with the Triumph.
Sat on previous version, had to rule it out due to too tall seat height and too high and too close handle bars. Any changes to these dimensions? The 2022 XSR900 will probably suit me better.
In 2016 I paid £9995 for the best bike I have ever sold, the MT-10, funny to think that the MT-09 is now more expensive than that animal was, although it probably gets through less fuel, MT-10 = Empty-10
Torn between the Mt09 or KTM 890 Duke. Duke wins on looks and performance, but just a little worried about the reliability. I’ve owned both Yamaha and KTM in the past. Never had an issue with either. Think I’ll gamble on the KTM , the ride and handling just looks second to none.
Personally I prefer the Kawasaki Z900 for its styling (but the Yamaha swing arm is nicer), performance and price. Question to Michael Mann: Yamaha and Honda (CBR 1000 R) have transistor ignition vs Kawasaki's digital ignition. Can you explain to us the advantages/disadvantages of one over the other?
I would like to see a video using the various lift control settings with a visual look at just how far the wheel gets off the ground. Being 68 and waiting for mine to be delivered, I'm not that excited about doing wheelies and would like to see which setting would best for my use. Thanks in advance,
If you don't like wheelies just chuck in Manual mode and set LiF control to level 3, it'll struggle to get up, it'll be like when you accidentally power up over the crest of a hill and the front wheel comes up the tiniest bit
Looks good. The headlight is "growing on me", from the headlight back it looks fine. How difficult would it be to offer say a Ducati Monster style slanted oval headlight ? (Yes there's the XSR, but I'm not keen on the body work on that) Guess I need to see one in real life , rather than on the 'net !
Your average fuel mileage, according to this video, is only 39.1 mpg? Have you noticed it getting any better than that, like into the high 40s or low 50s mpg? I've seen some videos where some were getting that much and they were "not economy focused", as they would say.
How's the bar width Michael? Been hearing that it's quite narrow on the standard bike. Is it the same set-up on the SP or is there a difference in drop and width as there is between the 790 Duke and the 890R?
Thanks for the well balanced review. Agree with all you said; it’s a shame Yamaha have missed a trick with the sub-premium build and small tft dash......other than those (and the decisive looks) a stonking back road weapon.
I’m really interested in this bike, I was a fast road rider in my youth then had a bit of a whoopsie racing at rockingham in 2008. As a result I still have the go, but my left shoulder and hand don’t from radial nerve damage. My question is, do you feel any vibes through the bars or chassis when giving it the berries? I’m 47 now and have arthritis as a result , but want something that makes me smile again. Great review
Does it have self cancelling indicators ? Just before you pulled in to the Yamaha dealer the journo in front had been indicating left passing numerous exits on two roundabouts.....I'm looking at the GT version coming down from the Triumph Explorer 1200 (Bit big now) but would still like to cover some miles between petrol stops....what did you get mileage wise and what would that equate to over full to empty range ? Thanks
Nice review, as ever. One question I have is, do I need this over the stock model, which is also getting some prettty good reviews... I'm thinking not unless you persuade me otherwise...
Hello, there i cant say how its on the new model but i have tried both the normal and the sp version of the outgoing model. Many ppl were complaining about the suspension of the normal one. But to be honest... For normal riding it was for than fine..and i have met many owners who were happy about the suspension and never had an issue. The problem starts when you start riding faster. At higher lean angles the suspenion sometimes can't keep up (mostly the rear shock) whitch may lead to dangerous situatations where the bike becomes unstable mid corrner. The SP fixes this and the suspension stops beeing the limit of the bike and you will sooner run out of lean angle or tire grip. I cant tell how much better the new one is better than the old one but if you like twisties and you ride a lot and want to improve the SP is the one to pick. The difference in price is smaller than aftermarket sus kit. Hope this helps a bit..
As good as the new MY09SP is why not get an MT10SP second hand for the same money. I did and absolutely love it. Crazy CP4 engine is epic. Total over kill but hey why not. ✊😁. Only one negative comment I can say about the bike. Fuel consumption. Ouch. Ah well, what ya gonna do? Didn't buy it for economy. ✊☺️⛽
Yamaha Super Nekad is really marvelous. Price is very reasonable compared to here competition from Europe. The best design among the super nekad are the MV Agusta Dragster/Brutale and Kawasaki Z1000, Z900 & Z800.. other brand do have the look of super naked as the fuel tank do not have the nekad design.
@@bennettsbikesocial Must be a really great bike now..that was the only thing I did not like about them. Yamaha make some well designed bikes. Thanks for the reply
Obviously a great fun bike with a tremendous motor but is sadly let down a little by dodgy styling [especially that headlight] and poor attention to detail [for a 10 grand bike]. This has always been the Yams weak point so it is a shame they have not improved it in that department.Hopefully a new XSR will also be joining the line up sooner rather than later. The competition in this class is tougher than ever so it will be interesting to see how it fair's against it's main rivals [hopefully you can do a group test]. Ride safe.
10k is inexpensive for a top middleweight bike. We can't have it both ways, Its not a premium bike. You get what you pay for, Its main more premium rivals, the 890R (unlocked) and ST cost a couple of grand more.
Close but the 890r edges it, it has a tad more power and better brakes. The MT09's CP3 engine sounds a lot better (IMO).. and you will probably have less reliability worries with the Yam. A bit less expensive too. I'm really torn between both... but I think I'm leaning towards the MT09 SP due to it being a bit more subtle, a bit less in your face styling wise.
I've got an MT10 so I like Yamaha's crazy designs but this is hideous 😂 Looks like a step back into the early 2000s it reminds me of a Ducati 999 front end...
Damn I agree the wiring on that bike looks like absolute garbage. It looks like an amateur wiring job using electrical tape. Bummer because the bike rips. It's actually mind blowing a 10k bike has that much lack of attention to detail.
@Johnny Blue I think the styling is far superior to the older model. The headlight is gorgeous. Wouldn’t have bought the older model tbh. I’d go as far as to say that the 15 was the ugliest of the lot. Vomit-worthy headlight on the 15 🤮
Great review, been waiting for this bike. The more I see it, the more I’m starting to love the looks.
Totally agree on the looks. They are growing on me the sport screen helps a lot.
It’s the M3/M4 all over again. The looks are growing on me
Lmao
I really like the underslung exhaust. It make the bike look so much neater and clean.
Great review that hits all the boxes to understand the new MT 09.
It's probably been said a while ago but TCS 1 and 2 isn't just for traction control, it sets all the rider aids to level 1 and 2. That rider in front of you, the only one of the group not getting the concept of staggered positioning.
I noticed that ..... the naughty step for him.
Yamaha delivers again 💪💪
bike is great.. dosent shake at high speed like older one.. power is insane
I could definitely live with one. Thanks for the comment.
Cheers, Michael

There is no old one. This is the first MT09 with an IMU
The MT09 is the 21st century LC/RD,KH.
still loving the previous model..
Nice review! Would love to see your comparison 2020 SP vs 2021 SP 😎👍

The switch gear may seem dated but it is solid unlike many on the market today .The head lamp kills this bike for me .
Self cancelling indicators are well needed ...

I would like to know more about what the electronics does.
The GSXS 1000 is the same price as this with at least another 30bhp. Probably a better alround motorcycle too....
Nah. I'd rather have an mt09. Absolutely totally different riding experience. No one is cross shopping these if they know what they want in a bike.
How do i get this suspension on a MT 07? Is it possible?
Is the throttle control jerky at low speed like the first editions were??
No sir, it's been dialled out. Although in the most sporty mode the throttle is designed to be fairly aggressive.
