I don't understand. You have full adjustment on the bike front and back. You can adjust both to suit your weight and riding style. You really can't criticise a bike for being hard when you haven't tried to adjust it. And, saying that the front suspension doesn't work with the rear shock is just nonsense for the same reason. Secondly, if the bike is brand new, as it looks, it's pretty hard to criticise the brakes. They take quite a time to bed in. IMO it's a peachy, great bike and I will be having a test ride asap, with a view to trading in my CB650R. In future please don't make declarations about a bike before you've been able to get to know it. It's boring.
Hi Clive the whole point of my review is to advise others what to expect. I believe I have done this. I also advise in the video that you would need to have the suspension set up. As for the brakes the bike had 230 miles on the clock. I am sorry if I didn't tell you what you wanted to hear in my review - after all this review was my honest opinion and you are more than welcome to disagree. I appreciate your feedback any how
2 years ago.. but I'll reply anyway. The gen3 MT08 SP is found by many riders (100kg and over) to have too soft a front spring compared to the rear.. and many have gone up a strength in spring size for the front. So.... just maybe he does have a good feeling for how it should be!
The SP's spring rates are softer than the standard one. It's just that there is too much damping dialed in from the factory. Just open the damping settings and you'll see that the suspension will feel a lot softer on country roads but the stability doesn't go away. That's the beauty of the SP.
I rode the normal MT09 and thought the suspension was spot on. Love the looks of this bike. Have to disagree about the fuelling , I thought it was perfect throughout the Rev range, in fact it was a highlight of the ride. Prefer this to the KTM 890 duke R and this won’t break down. 😬 The Triumph is a little more track focused but this MT09 is way more fun on the road.
Totally agree with your comments, I test rode the standard model yesterday and ordered the SP today. Also rode the 890R, this is a much more focused bike with out of this world handling but the Yamaha will do more overall.
After trying the Triumph and the KTM, I loved the MT09SP so much, I have now brought it. Seriously, if you ride your bike mainly on the road, the Yamaha is the one to get. It does everything, commute, A+ B road blasts and the track. What will surprise you is just how well it does it and how much fun you’ll have doing it.
Looks like an awesome machine , but for me the Ktm 890 Duke is what I’ve decided on. The handling on the previous 790 was hands down the best bike I’ve ever ridden. Don’t believe the critics on KTMs reliability. The few issues they had with their previous dukes being their first parallel twin usually present early and are fixed under warranty. Either way , don’t think you could go wrong with either. Awesome review and keep up the great work
I have to say that the 890 Duke R really blew me away in the bends and the suspension was so impressive too. Bike would dive slightly under braking and soak up the bumps in the bends. I appreciate the feedback thank you

Testrode the SP a week ago, can agree on the wooden brakes. But mine only had 35km on the odometer so the brakes had not been broken in yet. I bet the wooden feeling goes away. Rode my friends 2019 model and that has very sharp brakes, can't imagine they would make them worse by adding a better master cylinder. I'm getting my MT 09 in June. Really looking forward to it
I think it's the pads Yamaha use. My 2015 mt07 had wooden feeling brakes. I swapped the pads to brembo sintered and they were much better. Improved the feel after that with some braided lines too.
Excellent real world review from Bikes-of-Rye! And as Neevesy points out in the MCN review of the MT09 SP it's all the super naked anyone can really appreciate on public roads anyway. As the former owner of a '19 MT09 I can tell you the 847cc version of that engine was a pure delight, the 890 version can only be more delightful! It was a great bike needing just a few chassis adjustments to make it a bit more "super bike" and a bit less "supermotard" nervous on those long high speed sweepers. I have since traded for a '19 Speed Triple but if I had known the '21 MT09 SP was going to be available I would have waited for it. It might be the ultimate balance of power, light weight, track once-in-awhile all-rounder to dollar spent.
I loved riding the bike. I felt the quick shifter was a little clunky but shifts were super fast and tactile. The suspension was stiff, but not set up for my personal specs. The clutch grabbed late and was a little boggy, like you mentioned, but I absolutely loved the bike. It was light and flickable and required very little input on the bars to make it move. And the brakes felt insane. Great stopping power.
Definitely my next bike. I'm getting a new one next year and transitioning from sportsbike to naked and this bike has just caught my eye. Grown up with Yamahas and with insurance it's cheap as, so it's a no brainer. All the reviews are saying it's a vast improvement over last year's model and I'm a big fan of the looks! Was looking at the KTM 890R, but another review put it best; to make it match up to the competition, you end up spending another 2 grand on their powerparts which in my opinion is ridiculous considering it's the "R" model, which is supposed to be sportier. @@Steve-motorcycles That's exactly my viewpoint. Parts of Japanese bikes just tend to be cheaper and more readily available and just feel more put together. I test rode both the R3 (which I have now) and the RC390 which is the direct competitor and the KTM just felt like it was rattling about everywhere. I'm sure the more expensive models (i.e the Super Duke) have a better fit and finish, but as far as bang for buck goes? This SP looks like the one for me
Without adjusting the suspension to the rider, I agree the SP isn't going to be an appreciable upgrade. But if you are the suspension tweaking type, I think the SP will be the best of the bunch.
Front brake: Pads don't reach their full power until you get a couple hundred on the clock. Also, Yamaha put a radial-pump MS on this model which is an improvement from the previous axial-pump. Anything more, I'd guess a set of braided lines and upgraded HH pads would solve any deficiency. Obviously we're not getting Brembo Stylemas and 330mm rotors and braided lines and adjustable-radio MS (Duke 890R for example) from factory, but neither are we paying those prices. Yamaha have moved the MT in a better direction in every way, short of a bigger fuel capacity.
The bike had over 200 miles on the clock. There is no doubt in my mind you can improve this but we have to review the bike as it comes from the factory
@@BikesofRye Understood. I just find quite a lot of non-savvy reviewers complaining about brake performance on new bikes some dealership allowed them to demo for UA-cam viewership, without considering they are not bedded in and haven't heat cycled.

It may be adjustable but it also depends on rider weight... you would hope there is enough give in the compression to allow for your weight. If not then change of springs required. I would say that if you're light weight then this bike will be rock solid
Nice video and well thought out, been tossing up between one of these and a Street Triple R, thinking that the Yamaha with smart electronics and cruse control might be a good bet as soon as I get my full license
If you were going for the SP then I think you should do it... best thing is to try get a test ride on both and see how you like the riding position of the MT09 as it very relaxed
Im debating on this bike, the new Ducati monster, the new Tuono 660, or the new street triple rs. I cannot make up my mind. What would you pick? And why?
@@TOMAHAWK813 You can't go wrong with either but I kinda don't like the looks of the Yamaha. Tuono is cool but I don't have a dealer in my area that I truly trust so I'm gonna have to pass. The Triumph I really likes but I think they will update the bike with a new dash and maybe IMU based electronics like the new Speed has. So funny enough the monster is leading the chart and usually I don't really like Ducatis lol

Personally I think the gen 1 MT09 is the best of all, hear me out. When you are buying a bike like the MT09, the attraction for it, let's be honest, is hooligan riding as promoted. Now if you are getting a bike that is designed and promoted for such, you don't want all the rider aids etc. as that dulls down the excitement factor. The gen 1 doesn't come with the ABS, and the engine is far more unforgiving than the next 2 generations, for me this is what brings the true character out of the bike, straight up bad idea LOL which is fantastic. Moving forward, the gen 2 (I own) I believe is the most attractive version of the MT line-up. Yes it does have the rider aids etc. but it is the clear winner in terms of looks I believe. Now on to the gen 3, personally I think it is a step backwards for the brand, a lot of rider aids, and a weird styling to it. The bike has gone from being a bike you need to ride, to a bike that grandma can get on and not kill herself. Don't get me wrong, I don't wish harm upon anyone, but my point is simply the "master of torque" shouldn't be catering for Mrs Daisy to ride it and stay in the original target audience range of "hooligan", where it became popular. Because without this appeal, it just becomes a boring spec compare bike that loses all battles. It is supposed to be a cheap, back to basics bike that puts grins on your face from ear to ear. Instead it is now on comparison paperwork such as yeah but the street triple this and the KTM that. But I will compliment the paintwork, that was a nice touch. I will say, they do need to make the ABS have an option where it can be switched off like the TCS, pulling the fuse is rather troublesome. And importantly, get rid of those hideous number plate tails they have on the gen 2 and 3!
A harder, more sportier suspension is not just for the track. "Safety over comfort" as my suspension guy always says. So I use my track setup for the road (summer and winter) as well and I'm pretty sure we have worse roads here.
I'm 75kg with gear on and found the suspension slightly too firm on bumps so I backed off the compression damping (low and high) which is a good compromise for me, feels much plusher without losing control. I guess lighter springs would probably give great results but where do you stop. The best thing about this bike is how good it is out of the box, the confidence in the front end is amazing, just great geometry. I reckon there is enough adjustment to give most people a reasonable setting.
@@BikesofRye To be fair, after 5 weeks and 1800 miles, I'm inclined to agree that the springs are too stiff for my weight, especially the front. I'll get the work done and report back. I'm also going to fit a set of SBS race sinter pads to sharpen up the initial bite. I think these mods should transform the bike for relatively few pennies.
I love everything about the bike looks wise as I haven't rode one of them, the headlight is a bit weird but will probably grow on me, I had a tracer 900 so I know they're great bikes and this new model is just meant to be better so win win!
Almost bought one of these. Fantastic bike. I even like the new headlight, but,,,,, What I don't like at the front is the very visible brake lines and the crooked horn!!! you can see the horn wires on the back!!! Looks horrible. Why didn't they center the horn and make it face forward????? Just looks a little hack or rushed to get it out there. Other than that, I like it. Cancelled my order for this and bought a BMW R Nine T!!!!
Do you think so? I find it really relaxed you are more upright I guess and sure maybe you could ride it longer. I would have to see if there is enough adjustment in compression on the front forks to properly enjoy
@@BikesofRye The RS is a great bike and there’s nothing wrong with it but I don’t spend much time over 100 mph and at 61 and living on the Isle of Wight I found the easy low down power seemed perfect for me. Nice review… I enjoyed watching it😊
This bike compared to the Duke R and the Street Triple in terms of motor (power/torque) - which did you like the most and which the least? Also, great video!
To answer the power/torque question ignoring sound, character, gearbox and in standard form. For me the MT as an overall. KTM will be stronger real low revs but not by a lot. The street is almost as strong as the MT
Bigger cubes mean bigger torque. Torque is the actual force an engine can pound out at a given RPM. Bigger explosions in the cylinders producing more force, at more RPM. Peak power might be the same, but that's only if you're turning max revs and can keep it there. Everywhere else and a bigger engine is just going to deliver fatter thrust a much higher percentage of the time. That's something not discerned by spec sheet warriors who only focus on the peak number. Fat torque always feels better, is always more satisfying, requires less banging around the transmission and making the engine frantic to get moving. Lots of tiny weak explosions in the space of a minute to achieve high horsepower vs. many less but HUGE explosions in a minute? I'd take the huge explosions.
I had both the 2017 standard MT-09 (which was stolen after only 2000 miles) and a 2020 MT-09 SP. Despite my own fiddling and a professional suspension tune up, I never found the SP bike comfortable even at its softest settings. Great pity that the new bike seems the same although I've not ridden it. Apart from that, both bikes were really good and for me, better than a Street Triple R that I had in between.
Your correct on the front suspension the rebound is to hard just turn it back 5 clicks and it’s sorted my clutch feels the same but the demo one with 5k was perfect just need some miles on it 👍🏼
It’s been awhile, don’t remember watching this review but really glad I stumbled back/onto it. This summer before settling on a bike the short list was the 2021 street triple rs, mt09 sp and the 890 duke r. As much as I love my 890r always wondered if either of those two bikes would’ve been better suited for me. Now thanks to your honest review I can cross the mt09 off the should’ve would’ve could’ve list. Again thank you!
Just to add to the D-mode, it isn't same power in all four, it is full power in 1-2-3 but really stripped down power in 4. Other modes are just changing throttle response like AGGRESSIVE-WILD-MILD-NOOBIEMODE(Rain mode). But it's good point thought that it might as well be very good to use in city, where you really do not need that crazy 119HP. But I do not think that anyone yet DYNO the mode number 4 :).
Interesting you say that as I did get told that there was no difference in power between the modes it was just throttle mapping... but yes its great to use depending on where you are as it will be a much smoother ride around town in a lesser mode
@@BikesofRye no problem ;), it’s hard to not get lost in all the details. When I test drove MT-09 I have started from D-mode 4 and it was really dialed down and quite comfy to start from. Then quickly changed to 3-2-1 and fun begun :D, and I felt a lot more secure on this bike compared to MT-07 even thought it has a lot more power, it just feels a lot more stable, the suspension is just miles ahead and SP gotta be nice as well, didn’t try that one out thought, it’s anyway past the limit I have set myself to financially :D. MT-09 wasn’t planned originally too but then I rode it and fell in love…. Ehm…

Really wish they'd done away with the long seat and done a split seat with a higher tail, similar to the z900. Would of made it look less like a hunch back and almost perfect in my opinion
I would like to see you do a review and insight on the Kawasaki Z900, which is the most similar bike that this is often compared to. Matt from the Bike Show went for the stock 2021 version of the MT 09 over the Z900 because he thought the Z900 was bland and less playful. Also he prefers the triple engine over the Z900 inline four.
I love the bike but I have some mixed feelings about the looks of it. Sometimes, I feel it could use some refining and other times I am fairly okay with it's looks.
I own one. There absolutely fantastic. so fun. Great engine. Bargain for your money QS up and down. GP3 engine. S22S front and rear. etc etc. etc.. wonderful bike. loads of power. Mode1 is a beast with all Other modes off. Front wheel just lifts for fun..snatchy girl she is

Have you test ridden any of the bikes yet? The 765RS will be quicker than the Tuono 660 or the monster and is more of an road/track bike. Also depends on your riding experience and capabilities. The 765RS is a great easy bike to ride but it is seriously capable. The Tuono maybe more of the better choice for you. My advice is try the Tuono and the 765RS. The monster cannot be compared to these bikes but the new 950 supersport is worth considering

MT09 has a very strong engine and it is slightly more comfortable than the RS too. It would be more practical two up too. Have you considered an adventure bike?

The 765 rs will require more revs but it gives you that beautiful top end sound and rush. The MT09 engine power is more broad and very strong of course. Depends what you like from a bike. It would be hard to really pick but either way the engine is coupled together with the chassis, brakes etc so naturally for me I will prefer the 765 due to the all round experience
Thanks for the review. Did not get a clear understanding of handling on twisty roads. Does it roll in well, sit on the corner well, respond well to small adjustments, deal with bumps etc mid corner? Thanks P
I took the bike down one of my favourite twisties that I know very well. It does roll in well, sit in a corner not so well with the stiff suspension. Needs setting up and as I mention in the video it's a very relaxed riding position low seat high handlebars so you don't feel 'on it'.
MT 09 SP vs the Aprilla Rs 660 …. Their both the same price in my country, I know it’s kind of a stupid question comparing both but the Aprilla does look great
I will be releasing a video this Tuesday on the Tuono 660... as for that bike vs the MT09SP hmm I am not sure you can compare the two due to the power difference. Though saying that the Tuono does do certain things better than the MT09.. look out for my review anyway 😁
@@BikesofRye yeah the two don’t necessarily stack up but I always find myself comparing badass street bikes with aggressive looking road bikes and than often contemplating about having enough money for a Harley streetfighter bike 🏍😂😂. I remember driving a YZF 125r & the position felt nice and aggressive but I than thought my next bike should be more comfortable and powerful so I got a bandit but shortly after felt that I missed the aggressiveness of the yzf so I might lean toward Aprilla but that price I wish was 1500€ less
Don't fancy paying an extra £1200 for jazzy suspension that's too hard. Most testers gloss over suspension deficiencies. You're not one of them. Good review.
I noticed a slight judder in first gear from a standstill too. Kinda put me off purchasing one. Does this improve with mileage or is it inherent with all mt09s?
@@alangriff1 It’s not the gearbox at all, they have fantastic transmissions. When you have all that torque how smooth could it be? Ride an R1 if you want smooth.
It’s the driveline lash. That’s why they keep the chain so tight on the mt 09’s. I was hoping that they would update the driveline gear lash this go around. 🙁
I hope that this wouldn't put you off but I thought it was important to pass this on in my video to make others aware. I would still personally buy an MT09
It would probably be better to explore the bike yourself first in order to eliminate all the confusion that happens when first orienting. Then give your first impressions after that is all out of the way. Just a suggestion...🤔
I am considering both the Yamaha MT-09 and the Suzuki GSX-S1000. I will have to check the prices on the two. The Zook has Brembo brakes and a bigger engine. The Yamaha still interests me though. I would like to ride them both to determine which I really prefer.

The suspension was as it came. I wonder if the compression/rebound would be enough to soften it up for the road or if you would need to change the fork springs. Only will you know once you get the bike and do it yourself or have a professional set it up for your weight
But most importantly- these are MADE IN JAPAN- so perfection awaits.👌🏼 Triumph and KTM may have Brembo brakes, but those bikes are not reliable at all. This isn’t a 200 horsepower motorcycle, the brakes are more than adequate for anyone who buys this bike.
Have you owned a Triumph or KTM ? I would be ignorant to comment on Triumphs reliability, having never owned one but mates I’ve ridden with have had no major issues with there’s. KTM have won more Daker’s then any other manufacturer ! , twice that of Yamaha it would seem. The Daker is the most grueling race in the world and a testimonial to the machines and riders that even finish. I’ve owned multiple KTM’s and I can assure you , they are as reliable as any of the other many bikes I’ve owned in my 40 years existence.

@@tg8150 I didn’t say there were , but also it would be unfair to compare the two machines. KTM’s are built for performance , and always pushing the boundaries. I will say a well maintained KTM should give you little major problems if sticking to the manual. That’s speaking from my own personal experience and I’m now on my third, with many friends having the same experiences over years of riding. My new KTM 890 has a 2 year warranty and longer service intervals (15k) than comparison to an MT09 (10k) Assuming you have never owned a KTM and are have raised your opinions from online threads - KTM owners generally abuse the bike a little more - since they are just that - Race Bred Bikes. Just for your reading pleasure. The 790 Duke came in equally reliable as an MT09 in relation to costs spent and engine wear results over a a 50,000km endurance test. Which do you like better, the Street Triple or this MT-09? And, between the two bikes, which feels faster or quicker? *I've seen aftermarket side panel and cowling kits that improve the looks of the MT-09.*
I'd say they both feel quick but the Street has the power at the top of the rev range. If it was a sprint the Street would pull away. On the road out of corners both very similar
@@BikesofRye Really, I would think that the MT-09 would out pull the Street Triple out of the hole because of the 10 extra ft.lbs of torque and then, the Triumph may overtake the Yamaha as you get into the higher speed accelerations--like over 110 to 120 mph. I would love to see them do a drag race with equally skilled riders.
How tall are you? The MT isn't exactly more roomier it is just a different riding position 2021 MT is low seat, low pegs, high handle bars 2020 Street is medium seat, medium pegs and medium handlebars Depends what you prefer more race position or more relaxed position
@@BikesofRye Maybe, it's a huge amount of money since I ride not much. I have a MT-07 (2014) with 10.5K on it now, so I don't have to trade it in immediately but I was also looking into the new Z900.
@GregAndr On the MT-07? no, the only bike I could do that was the Honda MSX125 :-) Even on my previous bike the Honda CBR600FS I had to shift my body/weight to get onto the ground.
The 890R feels more meaty lower down but in real world tests (look up Knox MT09 SP vs 890R) they are inseparable in terms of acceleration performance. The brakes are better on the 890R though..
@@paulhope3401 since posting this comment I’ve owned the KTM and spent plenty of time on the Yamaha. The KTM definitely fells lighter, pulls harder down low and is better equipped overall. I will say for the long haul, I’d trust that Japanese triple, even with 12k miles of trouble free fun on the KTM.
@@BikesofRye I mean joke enjoyed hah, but for real- if you never had the chance to ride a Buell, man they were fun. Crazy torque for days, loud and nasty; they were like a leather jacket/tattooed rock and roll antisocial middle finger of the street bike world. The belt was this ironically smooth, quiet part that stayed out of the way of that thumping badass motor sound. They were pretty rad but chains are cheap, so companies...🤷♂️
Nice review! Nice bike too, accept for some 'style issues' (personal opinion). The headlight is plain ugly, and the swingarm stands out way too much in that aluminium colour .. Wouldn't trade in the striple for it ;)

The SP - The bling factor (gold forks, alloy swing arm) fully adjustable front and rear suspension, cruise control, paint and also it will still be worth that bit more than the standard bike come re-sale so not all is lost. I would also look to see if you can get a bit of discount at your dealer always worth an ask ;)
@@BikesofRye I can get $800 off of the standard version vs MSRP (zero discount) on the SP version at my local dealership, which made the decision very easy.
Wrong. Mode 4 cuts power. The clutch is a bit harach. Its not a very sophisticated ride. But it sure is fun. But you didnt even try the wngine properly. Thats a bit sad. Let it rev in mode 2 or 1 and ypu wilp feel like it has 150hp or more. It just roxkets
Yea me too the 2017-19 looks much better it fits the mt09 style better. The new one looks like they tried to copy kawi z900 but they forgot a lightbulb so it ended up being alien like instead.
10 grand bike and yet use halogen bulbs for indicators? Yamaha is having a laugh, even Chinese bikes use LEDs all around these days lol. Great bike though, more comfortable than the MT07.
@@BikesofRye The front styling I agree is polarizing, but that exhaust looks like they had forgotten one was required and borrowed the design from a medium duty truck. At least on the trucks the exhaust is almost hidden underneath.
@@rlsedition yes the exhaust looks very cheap to be honest and its location isn't the best. You would definitely want to upgrade this and is something worth considering when buying the bike
Constructive criticism here, mate: if you want to grow your channel you need to invest in a better camera. The video (image) quality is pretty atrocious...
More the bike for wide as a field smooth US roads, no speed camera's, far far far fewer humanoids cars and real estate, you get the picture. London be 125 land, your pushing it at 500cc. Otherwise 12 million peep's will just get in the way.
I don't understand. You have full adjustment on the bike front and back. You can adjust both to suit your weight and riding style. You really can't criticise a bike for being hard when you haven't tried to adjust it. And, saying that the front suspension doesn't work with the rear shock is just nonsense for the same reason. Secondly, if the bike is brand new, as it looks, it's pretty hard to criticise the brakes. They take quite a time to bed in. IMO it's a peachy, great bike and I will be having a test ride asap, with a view to trading in my CB650R. In future please don't make declarations about a bike before you've been able to get to know it. It's boring.
Hi Clive the whole point of my review is to advise others what to expect. I believe I have done this. I also advise in the video that you would need to have the suspension set up. As for the brakes the bike had 230 miles on the clock. The gen3 MT08 SP is found by many riders (100kg and over) to have too soft a front spring compared to the rear.. and many have gone up a strength in spring size for the front.
So.... just maybe he does have a good feeling for how it should be!
The SP's spring rates are softer than the standard one. It's just that there is too much damping dialed in from the factory.
Just open the damping settings and you'll see that the suspension will feel a lot softer on country roads but the stability doesn't go away.
That's the beauty of the SP.
Yes that's the whole point - I just guess you have to take this into consideration when buying this bike

I rode the normal MT09 and thought the suspension was spot on. Love the looks of this bike. Have to disagree about the fuelling , I thought it was perfect throughout the Rev range, in fact it was a highlight of the ride. Prefer this to the KTM 890 duke R and this won’t break down. 😬 The Triumph is a little more track focused but this MT09 is way more fun on the road.
Totally agree with your comments, I test rode the standard model yesterday and ordered the SP today. Also rode the 890R, this is a much more focused bike with out of this world handling but the Yamaha will do more overall.
The 890 Duke R may have reliability issues but my god does it handle well and the suspension is incredible too

After trying the Triumph and the KTM, I loved the MT09SP so much, I have now brought it. Seriously, if you ride your bike mainly on the road, the Yamaha is the one to get. It does everything, commute, A+ B road blasts and the track. What will surprise you is just how well it does it and how much fun you’ll have doing it.

Looks like an awesome machine , but for me the Ktm 890 Duke is what I’ve decided on.
The handling on the previous 790 was hands down the best bike I’ve ever ridden. Don’t believe the critics on KTMs reliability. The few issues they had with their previous dukes being their first parallel twin usually present early and are fixed under warranty.
Either way , don’t think you could go wrong with either. Awesome review and keep up the great work
I have to say that the 890 Duke R really blew me away in the bends and the suspension was so impressive too. Bike would dive slightly under braking and soak up the bumps in the bends. I appreciate the feedback thank you

Testrode the SP a week ago, can agree on the wooden brakes. But mine only had 35km on the odometer so the brakes had not been broken in yet. I bet the wooden feeling goes away. Rode my friends 2019 model and that has very sharp brakes, can't imagine they would make them worse by adding a better master cylinder. I'm getting my MT 09 in June. Really looking forward to it
This bike had 230 miles on it. But there is a noticeable difference in stopping power and modulation in my opinion
I think it's the pads Yamaha use. My 2015 mt07 had wooden feeling brakes. I swapped the pads to brembo sintered and they were much better. Improved the feel after that with some braided lines too.

And as Neevesy points out in the MCN review of the MT09 SP it's all the super naked anyone can really appreciate on public roads anyway. As the former owner of a '19 MT09 I can tell you the 847cc version of that engine was a pure delight, the 890 version can only be more delightful! It was a great bike needing just a few chassis adjustments to make it a bit more "super bike" and a bit less "supermotard" nervous on those long high speed sweepers.
I have since traded for a '19 Speed Triple but if I had known the '21 MT09 SP was going to be available I would have waited for it. It might be the ultimate balance of power, light weight, track once-in-awhile all-rounder to dollar spent.

I loved riding the bike. I felt the quick shifter was a little clunky but shifts were super fast and tactile. The suspension was stiff, but not set up for my personal specs. The clutch grabbed late and was a little boggy, like you mentioned, but I absolutely loved the bike. It was light and flickable and required very little input on the bars to make it move. And the brakes felt insane. Great stopping power.

Definitely my next bike. I'm getting a new one next year and transitioning from sportsbike to naked and this bike has just caught my eye. Grown up with Yamahas and with insurance it's cheap as, so it's a no brainer. All the reviews are saying it's a vast improvement over last year's model and I'm a big fan of the looks! Was looking at the KTM 890R, but another review put it best; to make it match up to the competition, you end up spending another 2 grand on their powerparts which in my opinion is ridiculous considering it's the "R" model, which is supposed to be sportier. Cheers for the review!

@@Steve-motorcycles That's exactly my viewpoint. Parts of Japanese bikes just tend to be cheaper and more readily available and just feel more put together. I test rode both the R3 (which I have now) and the RC390 which is the direct competitor and the KTM just felt like it was rattling about everywhere. I'm sure the more expensive models (i.e the Super Duke) have a better fit and finish, but as far as bang for buck goes? This SP looks like the one for me
My advice is test ride the KTM 890 Duke R... Check my other videos for my personal review on it
That suspension is adjustable . If you would have adjusted it to your weight and style before riding you would have noticed a huge difference
Hopefully the compression/rebound settings can allow for it and it doesn't actually require different springs
Without adjusting the suspension to the rider, I agree the SP isn't going to be an appreciable upgrade. But if you are the suspension tweaking type, I think the SP will be the best of the bunch.
I wouldn't believe it to be common for someone to play around with the suspension or have it set up professionally so this I agree
Front brake: Pads don't reach their full power until you get a couple hundred on the clock. Also, Yamaha put a radial-pump MS on this model which is an improvement from the previous axial-pump. Anything more, I'd guess a set of braided lines and upgraded HH pads would solve any deficiency. Obviously we're not getting Brembo Stylemas and 330mm rotors and braided lines and adjustable-radio MS (Duke 890R for example) from factory, but neither are we paying those prices. Yamaha have moved the MT in a better direction in every way, short of a bigger fuel capacity.
The bike had over 200 miles on the clock. There is no doubt in my mind you can improve this but we have to review the bike as it comes from the factory

The suspension is fully adjustable, it will feel stiff if it isn't fully adjusted to your specific weight
It may be adjustable but it also depends on rider weight... you would hope there is enough give in the compression to allow for your weight. If not then change of springs required. I would say that if you're light weight then this bike will be rock solid

If you were going for the SP then I think you should do it... best thing is to try get a test ride on both and see how you like the riding position of the MT09 as it very relaxed

The Triumph I really likes but I think they will update the bike with a new dash and maybe IMU based electronics like the new Speed has. So funny enough the monster is leading the chart and usually I don't really like Ducatis lol

Personally I think the gen 1 MT09 is the best of all, hear me out. When you are buying a bike like the MT09, the attraction for it, let's be honest, is hooligan riding as promoted. Now if you are getting a bike that is designed and promoted for such, you don't want all the rider aids etc. as that dulls down the excitement factor. The gen 1 doesn't come with the ABS, and the engine is far more unforgiving than the next 2 generations, for me this is what brings the true character out of the bike, straight up bad idea LOL which is fantastic.
Moving forward, the gen 2 (I own) I believe is the most attractive version of the MT line-up. Yes it does have the rider aids etc. but it is the clear winner in terms of looks I believe.
Now on to the gen 3, personally I think it is a step backwards for the brand, a lot of rider aids, and a weird styling to it. The bike has gone from being a bike you need to ride, to a bike that grandma can get on and not kill herself. Don't get me wrong, I don't wish harm upon anyone, but my point is simply the "master of torque" shouldn't be catering for Mrs Daisy to ride it and stay in the original target audience range of "hooligan", where it became popular. Because without this appeal, it just becomes a boring spec compare bike that loses all battles. It is supposed to be a cheap, back to basics bike that puts grins on your face from ear to ear. Instead it is now on comparison paperwork such as yeah but the street triple this and the KTM that. But I will compliment the paintwork, that was a nice touch.
I will say, they do need to make the ABS have an option where it can be switched off like the TCS, pulling the fuse is rather troublesome. And importantly, get rid of those hideous number plate tails they have on the gen 2 and 3!
A harder, more sportier suspension is not just for the track. "Safety over comfort" as my suspension guy always says. So I use my track setup for the road (summer and winter) as well and I'm pretty sure we have worse roads here.

I'm 75kg with gear on and found the suspension slightly too firm on bumps so I backed off the compression damping (low and high) which is a good compromise for me, feels much plusher without losing control. I guess lighter springs would probably give great results but where do you stop. The best thing about this bike is how good it is out of the box, the confidence in the front end is amazing, just great geometry. I reckon there is enough adjustment to give most people a reasonable setting.
You are the sort of rider that I would imagine would find the suspension on this MT09 SP way too firm. Like teeth shattering firm
@@BikesofRye To be fair, after 5 weeks and 1800 miles, I'm inclined to agree that the springs are too stiff for my weight, especially the front. I'll get the work done and report back. I'm also going to fit a set of SBS race sinter pads to sharpen up the initial bite. I think these mods should transform the bike for relatively few pennies.

Almost bought one of these. Fantastic bike. I even like the new headlight, but,,,,, What I don't like at the front is the very visible brake lines and the crooked horn!!! you can see the horn wires on the back!!! Looks horrible. Why didn't they center the horn and make it face forward????? Just looks a little hack or rushed to get it out there.
Other than that, I like it. Cancelled my order for this and bought a BMW R Nine T!!!!

This bike compared to the Duke R and the Street Triple in terms of motor (power/torque) - which did you like the most and which the least? Also, great video!
To answer the power/torque question ignoring sound, character, gearbox and in standard form. For me the MT as an overall. KTM will be stronger real low revs but not by a lot. The street is almost as strong as the MT
Bigger cubes mean bigger torque. Torque is the actual force an engine can pound out at a given RPM. Bigger explosions in the cylinders producing more force, at more RPM. Peak power might be the same, but that's only if you're turning max revs and can keep it there. Everywhere else and a bigger engine is just going to deliver fatter thrust a much higher percentage of the time.
That's something not discerned by spec sheet warriors who only focus on the peak number. Fat torque always feels better, is always more satisfying, requires less banging around the transmission and making the engine frantic to get moving. Lots of tiny weak explosions in the space of a minute to achieve high horsepower vs. many less but HUGE explosions in a minute? I'd take the huge explosions.

I have a 2017 FJ (Tracer). I would buy this before the new Tracer (it's hideous). I'd slap on a small screen and be happy.

I had both the 2017 standard MT-09 (which was stolen after only 2000 miles) and a 2020 MT-09 SP. Despite my own fiddling and a professional suspension tune up, I never found the SP bike comfortable even at its softest settings. Great pity that the new bike seems the same although I've not ridden it. Apart from that, both bikes were really good and for me, better than a Street Triple R that I had in between.

Your correct on the front suspension the rebound is to hard just turn it back 5 clicks and it’s sorted my clutch feels the same but the demo one with 5k was perfect just need some miles on it 👍🏼
It’s been awhile, don’t remember watching this review but really glad I stumbled back/onto it. This summer before settling on a bike the short list was the 2021 street triple rs, mt09 sp and the 890 duke r. As much as I love my 890r always wondered if either of those two bikes would’ve been better suited for me. Just to add to the D-mode, it isn't same power in all four, it is full power in 1-2-3 but really stripped down power in 4. Other modes are just changing throttle response like AGGRESSIVE-WILD-MILD-NOOBIEMODE(Rain mode). But it's good point thought that it might as well be very good to use in city, where you really do not need that crazy 119HP. But I do not think that anyone yet DYNO the mode number 4 :).
Interesting you say that as I did get told that there was no difference in power between the modes it was just throttle mapping... but yes its great to use depending on where you are as it will be a much smoother ride around town in a lesser mode
From owners manual: 1, Sporty response, 2, Moderate response, 3, Mild response and 4, Mild response and limits engine output.

@@BikesofRye no problem ;), it’s hard to not get lost in all the details. When I test drove MT-09 I have started from D-mode 4 and it was really dialed down and quite comfy to start from. Then quickly changed to 3-2-1 and fun begun :D, and I felt a lot more secure on this bike compared to MT-07 even thought it has a lot more power, it just feels a lot more stable, the suspension is just miles ahead and SP gotta be nice as well, didn’t try that one out thought, it’s anyway past the limit I have set myself to financially :D. MT-09 wasn’t planned originally too but then I rode it and fell in love…. Ehm…

I would like to see you do a review and insight on the Kawasaki Z900, which is the most similar bike that this is often compared to. Matt from the Bike Show went for the stock 2021 version of the MT 09 over the Z900 because he thought the Z900 was bland and less playful. Also he prefers the triple engine over the Z900 inline four.

I love the bike but I have some mixed feelings about the looks of it. Sometimes, I feel it could use some refining and other times I am fairly okay with it's looks.
I own one. There absolutely fantastic. so fun. Great engine. Bargain for your money QS up and down. GP3 engine. S22S front and rear. etc etc. etc.. wonderful bike. loads of power. Mode1 is a beast with all Other modes off. Front wheel just lifts for fun..snatchy girl she is

Have you test ridden any of the bikes yet? The 765RS will be quicker than the Tuono 660 or the monster and is more of an road/track bike. Also depends on your riding experience and capabilities. The 765RS is a great easy bike to ride but it is seriously capable. The Tuono maybe more of the better choice for you. My advice is try the Tuono and the 765RS. The monster cannot be compared to these bikes but the new 950 supersport is worth considering

MT09 has a very strong engine and it is slightly more comfortable than the RS too. It would be more practical two up too. Have you considered an adventure bike?

The 765 rs will require more revs but it gives you that beautiful top end sound and rush. The MT09 engine power is more broad and very strong of course. Depends what you like from a bike. It would be hard to really pick but either way the engine is coupled together with the chassis, brakes etc so naturally for me I will prefer the 765 due to the all round experience

I took the bike down one of my favourite twisties that I know very well. It does roll in well, sit in a corner not so well with the stiff suspension. Needs setting up and as I mention in the video it's a very relaxed riding position low seat high handlebars so you don't feel 'on it'.

@@BikesofRye yeah the two don’t necessarily stack up but I always find myself comparing badass street bikes with aggressive looking road bikes and than often contemplating about having enough money for a Harley streetfighter bike 🏍😂😂. I remember driving a YZF 125r & the position felt nice and aggressive but I than thought my next bike should be more comfortable and powerful so I got a bandit but shortly after felt that I missed the aggressiveness of the yzf so I might lean toward Aprilla but that price I wish was 1500€ less

I noticed a slight judder in first gear from a standstill too. Kinda put me off purchasing one. Does this improve with mileage or is it inherent with all mt09s?

@@alangriff1 It’s not the gearbox at all, they have fantastic transmissions. When you have all that torque how smooth could it be? Ride an R1 if you want smooth.
It’s the driveline lash. That’s why they keep the chain so tight on the mt 09’s. I was hoping that they would update the driveline gear lash this go around. 🙁

I am considering both the Yamaha MT-09 and the Suzuki GSX-S1000. I will have to check the prices on the two. The Zook has Brembo brakes and a bigger engine. The Yamaha still interests me though. I would like to ride them both to determine which I really prefer.

The suspension was as it came. I wonder if the compression/rebound would be enough to soften it up for the road or if you would need to change the fork springs. Only will you know once you get the bike and do it yourself or have a professional set it up for your weight
But most importantly- these are MADE IN JAPAN- so perfection awaits.👌🏼
Triumph and KTM may have Brembo brakes, but those bikes are not reliable at all. This isn’t a 200 horsepower motorcycle, the brakes are more than adequate for anyone who buys this bike.
Not sure I agree on the comments regarding Triumph reliability.... But always welcome opinion on the channel so appreciate it

I would be ignorant to comment on Triumphs reliability, having never owned one but mates I’ve ridden with have had no major issues with there’s.
KTM have won more Daker’s then any other manufacturer ! , twice that of Yamaha it would seem. The Daker is the most grueling race in the world and a testimonial to the machines and riders that even finish. I’ve owned multiple KTM’s and I can assure you , they are as reliable as any of the other many bikes I’ve owned in my 40 years existence.

@@tg8150 I didn’t say there were , but also it would be unfair to compare the two machines. KTM’s are built for performance , and always pushing the boundaries. I will say a well maintained KTM should give you little major problems if sticking to the manual. That’s speaking from my own personal experience and I’m now on my third, with many friends having the same experiences over years of riding.
My new KTM 890 has a 2 year warranty and longer service intervals (15k) than comparison to an MT09 (10k)
Assuming you have never owned a KTM and are have raised your opinions from online threads - KTM owners generally abuse the bike a little more - since they are just that - Race Bred Bikes. Just for your reading pleasure. The 790 Duke came in equally reliable as an MT09 in relation to costs spent and engine wear results over a a 50,000km endurance test.
This was completed by German engineers who test many bikes and highly respected , so yes I absolutely stand by my comment

I'd say they both feel quick but the Street has the power at the top of the rev range. If it was a sprint the Street would pull away. On the road out of corners both very similar
@@BikesofRye Really, I would think that the MT-09 would out pull the Street Triple out of the hole because of the 10 extra ft.lbs of torque and then, the Triumph may overtake the Yamaha as you get into the higher speed accelerations--like over 110 to 120 mph. I would love to see them do a drag race with equally skilled riders.

I test rode a 2012 street triple and found it cramped in the seat / cockpit. Is this bike more roomier?
How tall are you? The MT isn't exactly more roomier it is just a different riding position
2021 MT is low seat, low pegs, high handle bars
2020 Street is medium seat, medium pegs and medium handlebars
Depends what you prefer more race position or more relaxed position

@@BikesofRye Maybe, it's a huge amount of money since I ride not much. I have a MT-07 (2014) with 10.5K on it now, so I don't have to trade it in immediately but I was also looking into the new Z900.
@GregAndr On the MT-07? no, the only bike I could do that was the Honda MSX125 :-) Even on my previous bike the Honda CBR600FS I had to shift my body/weight to get onto the ground.

How do you find the fuel consumption
Compared to the 890R, with hp/tq being similar, how does it ride? Does it feel as powerful?
Not as powerful real low down but its not a big difference to be honest
The 890R feels more meaty lower down but in real world tests (look up Knox MT09 SP vs 890R) they are inseparable in terms of acceleration performance.
The brakes are better on the 890R though..
@@paulhope3401 since posting this comment I’ve owned the KTM and spent plenty of time on the Yamaha. The KTM definitely fells lighter, pulls harder down low and is better equipped overall. I will say for the long haul, I’d trust that Japanese triple, even with 12k miles of trouble free fun on the KTM.

@@BikesofRye I mean joke enjoyed hah, but for real- if you never had the chance to ride a Buell, man they were fun. Crazy torque for days, loud and nasty; they were like a leather jacket/tattooed rock and roll antisocial middle finger of the street bike world. The belt was this ironically smooth, quiet part that stayed out of the way of that thumping badass motor sound. They were pretty rad but chains are cheap, so companies...🤷♂️

Nice review! Nice bike too, accept for some 'style issues' (personal opinion). The headlight is plain ugly, and the swingarm stands out way too much in that aluminium colour .. Wouldn't trade in the striple for it ;)
Thanks for the feedback and sure I wouldn't personally trade in my 765rs for the MT either but that isn't taking away the fact the MT is a great bike

MT09SP vs. Standard MT09? which and why?
The SP - The bling factor (gold forks, alloy swing arm) fully adjustable front and rear suspension, cruise control, paint and also it will still be worth that bit more than the standard bike come re-sale so not all is lost. I would also look to see if you can get a bit of discount at your dealer always worth an ask ;)

Wrong. Mode 4 cuts power. The clutch is a bit harach. Its not a very sophisticated ride. But it sure is fun. But you didnt even try the wngine properly. Thats a bit sad. Let it rev in mode 2 or 1 and ypu wilp feel like it has 150hp or more. It just roxkets

Yea me too the 2017-19 looks much better it fits the mt09 style better. The new one looks like they tried to copy kawi z900 but they forgot a lightbulb so it ended up being alien like instead.

@@BikesofRye The front styling I agree is polarizing, but that exhaust looks like they had forgotten one was required and borrowed the design from a medium duty truck. At least on the trucks the exhaust is almost hidden underneath.
@@rlsedition yes the exhaust looks very cheap to be honest and its location isn't the best. You would definitely want to upgrade this and is something worth considering when buying the bike

More the bike for wide as a field smooth US roads, no speed camera's, far far far fewer humanoids cars and real estate, you get the picture. London be 125 land, your pushing it at 500cc. Otherwise 12 million peep's will just get in the way.
