    Owner of a 2018. I'm going on a demo ride early June and the SP is my goal with that. I've been on a few trips where cruise control would be a revelation (also prevent traffic citations, increase fuel range, take one thing off the list of things to concentrate on). Also the suspension updates (Ohlins rear especially) would be a notch above what your review has said is already substantially better than the last-gen. I was on a demo ride just yesterday over with Kawasaki and the Z900 is immensely more stable, neutral, and confidence inspiring than the '18 MT. That's also a consideration, but obviously the updated MT has loads more electronic bits than the Z.

      @@maldridge7630 Perhaps they do. But they aren't ride-by-wire yet and it would require some substantial systems reengineering to achieve the usual suite of gizmos becoming more and more commonplace these days. Honestly they aren't necessary, but they are nice when comparing similar class models. If I could have IMU based TC and ABS, a cruise control, and absolutely nothing else I'd be satisfied. Even if those things were delivered with a clear analogue tach and LCD speedo w/indicators.

    Good review! However, one nit - I believe the correct torque output from the previous gen MT09 (I had one as well) was measured no higher than 67 lb/ft of torque, not 85! 85 would put this into super naked territory and, though nice, isn't in the cards. Probably 70 lb/ft is closer to correct for the present 890 MT.
    Young man, buy the SP model and you'll have about a perfect naked you'll keep for quite some time!
    I'd also like to beg the manufacturers to come out with larger TFT's for old guys like me. I have to wear bifocals to see these small screens in an age when
    tft's ought to be dirt cheap.

    I've been riding for many years now, and it seems that when an updated model is released, the manufacture's always say the new model is 50% more rigid than the previous model. If that's true, they should all have zero flex in them by now!

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 3 роки тому +1

      Lean a bike far over, and the telescopic suspension no longer is in-line with bumps. At that point the chassis had to twist and flex to offer compliance to traction. Ducati ran into this problem a few generations back with the Panigale. They made their frames too torsionally stiff and the bike's traction at the leaning limit was terrible. But the opposite is true as well, get a wet noodle for stiffness and other problems happen like wobbly handling and terrible lack of confidence, all pronounced by lousy suspension components.

I reluctantly sold it rather than putting money into it. I loved the engine, but it just was dicey when really pushing. I feel your conflict-ion. 2 years apart and a lot of modifications can seriously hamper your easy move to a newer, better riding bike. IF money is not your main concern, ask yourself this, are all those mods you slapped on really enhancing your ride enjoyment over this new bike? Seems to me the praise you gave this bike says the enjoyment and secure feel you get from it is worth the swap. Just don't over modify it in case a newer better version comes along in 2 more years. lol

    Man I wish Yamaha would make the mt-09 and actual cross plane “for those who don’t know it actually isn’t a crossplane despite the name” the new tiger 900 is a crossplane triple and it sounds amaaaaazing! It has a sound profile closer to the mt-07 and mt-10

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 3 роки тому +1

      Anything not phased directly inline (flat-plane) is technically cross-planed. A crankshaft plane is a theoretical plane in space where crank-pin centers are aligned, or co-linear. Any pin off that plane creates an intersecting plane, even if just 1°. All triple cylinder engines on the planet are cross-plane, even before manufacturers started calling them that. The only flat-plane triple that existed to my knowledge was the Laverda Jota 1000 (981cc) and even that was converted to the ubiquitous 120° phasing in 1982. Triumph's new Tiger is basically a common 270° parallel twin with an additional cylinder added, phased another 90º ahead of the 270° twin, which is why it sounds so similar to a 270° twin except smoother in tone. From the reviews I've seen, there's a lot of harsh vibration in the upper range of revs. T-plane is the proper theoretical description, and it probably produces some mechanical balance problems. They did it to space torque pulses to the rear wheel unevenly for traction off-road. Common triples are even firing, just like flat-plane inline-4 are even firing and not the best choice for dirt traction.

    • @toofastnobrakes
      @toofastnobrakes 3 роки тому

      @@exothermal.sprocket fair points. But ide still like to see this style of triple in more applications. Vibration in high revs isn’t something uncommon for many bikes, twins and in-line 4s, so that wouldn’t be much of a change for many. And the stronger torque delivery along with the sound profile is what ide be looking for. The MT is supposed to be a “master of torque” and this style of triple I believe would only help it earn its name

I only rode the bike occasionally, so keeping the "A or B" settings straight was a pain.

      Actually its cause it use a different type of pump (radial if I remember correctly), the same type like that of a track bike
      I wanted to change it but the dealer explained that changing it will actually make the bike perform worse rather then better. Got the same on my old mt01 which shares alot of parts with the r1

      in 2021 the technology should by now have rendered this reservoir obsolete. Its such an eyesore on bike asthetically.

      I agree. Imagine if they rocked up with that reservoir on the new Hayabusa.
      Love this bike but that reservoir would have to go

    Cool review, thanks. I see that you have a screen on your 2019 bike. Would you recommend this? I recently rode a GSX S750 and did not like the wind getting under my helmet at speed, say 130kph. Secondly was the turning circle ok around town? Not had the chance to ride the 2021 MT09 yet. Definitely on my list for a trade up now.

      Owned 2020 s750. Testrode the new mt09 and ordered same day. The Mt is much lighter and therefore easier to steer.

      Love the screen. I put it on because I love the look but it helps keep wind off my chest, but my head is still fully exposed to the wind, which is how I like to ride.

    Does the mt09 now have bi directional shift quickshifter? Some have said the older years only had quickshift up but I could swear the 22 have up and down quick shifter (clutchless shift)

    KTM 890 or mt09
    These are the 2 I have it narrowed down to. Reviews on the 890 are all positive but this new mt09 seems to make people quite happy also

    • @Szlejer
      @Szlejer 3 роки тому

      I also looked hard at the KTM 790/890 as the reviews raved about them, but then I read a bunch of end user reliability issues (leaks, electric failures, etc). A local brand new 890 ended up twice in the shop because of warranty issues. While the MT-09 series has practically none. Guess which bike I bought in the end! :D

      @@exothermal.sprocket I never asked for anyone opinions what I should buy.
      Just made a statement that I find in the 900 cc class these appear to be the leaders all around.
      I already viewed and tried both of them. Now I'm just waiting for the Ducati monsters to hit Canada so I can see those.
      Then it's purchase time. 😍

      Mt 07 is more basic, much more now. Throw a good shock and fork kit on the 07 and it’ll be a nice basic bike that’s really fun. The 09 is good right out of the gate. Might need a seat.
