    You will rarely (if ever!) see tempo runs done in a dryland hockey conditioning program.
    Why?
    Because trainers and players don't know about this method!
    That's too bad. When it comes to aerobic off-ice drills, tempo workouts are right up there as one of the most effective ways to train an athlete's aerobic system.
    This video walks you through a sample tempo run workout any hockey player can do at a nearby track or field to elevate his conditioning off the ice.

    I have 2 questions
    1: Is jumping rope good for hockey conditioning
    2: Why doesn't all conditioning exercises transfer to the ice?

      1. Yes. Almost all my athletes do jump rope conditioning. It's great for general fitness. Not to mention a ton of fun when you learn tricks.
      2. Without turning this into a novel, it has to do with specificity. No matter what you do in the gym during the off-season, the first week back on the ice after a summer break feels horrible. Why? Because your body has not yet adapted to the demands of skating.
      That's why the best way to condition for hockey is on the ice. Out of all dryland activities, I would rank sled work (and other strongman events like yoke or farmer's walks) and hill sprints the highest. Those come the closest to replicating what goes on during a hockey shift - both in duration, level of intensity, and the demands placed on the legs and lungs.
      While swimming or jogging are decent activities to build a foundation of fitness in the general public, they are so far removed from skating you're not going to see it transfer.
