- The final day of our Holiday trip brings Li and I to the coldest district in all of Thailand! Thank you for joining us here!
Phu Ruea, a district of Loei province, is uniquely situated geographically making it the coldest part of Thailand, even though its neither the farthest North, nor the highest in terms of elevation. It was the day after New Year's, and I did not want to miss the chance to visit this area (specifically, during the time when it would also BE the coldest week of all of Thailand, and see just HOW cold it would be!)
There's no snow in Thailand, but honestly, when an average day here includes afternoon temps of 36C (yes, even in the 'winter'), feeling temperatures in the single digits is amazing! Chilly indeed! and of course we needed to find the most TASTY ways to warm up on such a day like today!
Thank you for joining us today, I would love to visit Loei again and again, theres just an incredible amount of ultra-local stuff to explore in these quite overlooked areas along Thailand's border regions. Always my own favorite areas to visit, and I can't wait for the next chance to spend more time in Loei.

There's no Google Maps location, but I remember it was after an airport on the South side of the highway, and before a brand new (Jan '21) PTT station on the North Side - this is if you are traveling North from Lom Sak to Phu Reua, youll find it around 20km before reaching the base of the climb for the Phu Ruea National Park.

I took a minute just now to appreciate that, OK now I’m smiling because there’s just one small detail to add. It would be like a box of chocolates if there was just one momentary bite with grits of sand in it. To make you smile, a common experience on a bike ride around here is, I have to wipe my teeth off because I usually smile so many times that the sand and dust From the road eventually leave a fine coating on my teeth, I’m not kidding, it’s very funny though, because it means that I’ve been having a good time

Keep these videos coming , Joel . They are amongst the highlights of the week for some of us who have been locked down more or less constantly for several months. Makes me look forward to seeing some of the places you visit and trying some of the food you order when such travel is possible again.

We are fortunate to not have a total lockdown, but I am also under restriction here, that’s why we are doing only local trips, but this is only occasionally :-) remember, the video was only one meal out of maybe 20, the other 19 I was in my house :-)

Wish I’d have spent more time visiting more parts of Thailand other than the main tourist haunts. Didn’t see the dishes you ordered much even in Phuket , Samui etc. I wish the thai restaurants near me watched your channel as much as I do so they can put some of these dishes on their menu! Joel and Li, ya'll are inspiring. I made my take on Pad Woon Sen tonight after work. Been exploring cooking with glass noodles. I used red onions, julienned fresh ginger, garlic, baby Bella mushrooms, yellow squash, broccoli florets, and two red Thai chilis. For the sauce, I used soy, oyster, and fish sauces combined with honey and chicken broth. Turned out great. I ordered two Kratibs from a young lady in Thailand on the Etsy site so I can carry my sticky rice to work. lol. I cook my sticky rice in a traditional bamboo cone steamer. I think I'm turning Thai. I really think so. 😎 Blessings to you, Li, and the people of Loei province.

sheesh...it goes to -15*c here in Korea at times. There is this fun thing we do where we throw water up in the air (hot or cold) and just watch as the liquid freezes even before it hits the ground!. i really had no idea how serious the thai people take coffee until i found your channel. its pretty incredible and intimidating looking all at the same time! i grew up working in a few coffee shops in the states. these places look so exotic

Drove home after my night shift and it was -40C in Alberta Canada.. going through a deep freeze! But of course 12C is cold where it's normally so much warmer!! You and Li are so adorable together! Oh .... my. LouLieu, you are the winner (so far) haha, the winner of my own question as to "who has the coldest day today?" That is incredible. I am impressed, and I could never imagine making it through more than ONE winter like that. Which is honestly a huge reason why I live in Thailand in the first place! The swings in yearly annual temperature in Canada are incredible!!! True, the high here is higher, but not by much... but the low here is NOTHING compared to what you are in right now! :). Oh wow. Today’s lunch spread sure did look tasty! I don’t know if I’ve ever seen you eat something as sweet as that brownie. It’s good for you every now and then. Have a great week Joel & Li!
So good! I see you are getting to know me a bit Carli, but also.... ok I can admit, haha, I do occasionally want to go find ice cream and a brownie. Some things are just too good, sweet or not, weak teeth or not :). I think the "sweets' comment is interesting though, because scientifically speaking I eat a MASSIVE amount of sugar every single day. During my solo bike riding last week I ate nearly 18,000 calories of ripe banana, dates, sugarcane juice, coca cola, and coconut water, on top of the "normal food" of about 6,000 calories of oatmeal, and then 10,000 calories of rice, veggies, eggs that I eat when Im done with the rides. Yes I do keep very close track as you can see, haha, total for 5 days was 33,900kJ of work, which translates roughly 1 to 1, so 33,900 Cal of food required.
ha! So just looking at it that way... My entire week last week was approx 90% carbohydrates, (60% of that being simple sugars/natural sugars!) and only 10% protein and fat together!

Macadamia nuts are native to Australia and were introduced to Hawaii in the late 1880s. We had one in the backyard when I was growing up in Sydney and used to get so many nuts from it that we would give them away to all the neighbours and family.

We have the sorrel plant in Trinidad too! It is prevalent around Christmas time and locals brew the typically ruby red drink spiced with cloves, nutmeg, ginger, sometimes with some rum.
We also produce a white rum infused with sorrel .

What I always appreciate about your videos is your respect and gratitude for all the delicious meals you have, for the Thai culture, and the people who are making your food. And, there’s nothing like having a meal with real food and not all of the processed stuff back in the States. Lol. The dishes always makes me salivate and reminds me of how good it was when I visited Thailand many years ago.

Rosella is native to Africa and Southeast Asia as well as India and area around. In Indonesia we got rosella tea as herbal drink too.
This time you got yourself quite a meal, Joel! The amount of the dishes is just enormous per portions. At least compared to what I could got here in my country.
Love the ghost ornament too! Another journey into less-known area is your specialty I think. Never seen those kind of Som Tam before because usually Thai restaurant here provide somewhat general menu on the table.

And yeah man for these Som Tams, honestly (no offense to them!) you see the girl serving us today, she didnt even know what exactly to call them! You could see how many times I asked for specifics... and none were given :). But WOW were they tasty, and WOW were they serving massive portions of them all today
You and Mark really inspired me to garnish my meals with herbs and sauces. Really levels dishes up when I chase my bites with different herbs.

Roselle, also called rosella, Jamaican sorrel, or java jute. This is related to Hibiscus. You didn't see sorrel in Jamaica because you went in January when the season is over but the drink is available. I'm really surprised to see it there in Thailand.
N Ram!! We did indeed have some tasty beverages there, of many many different kinds but this was always a favorite of mine from Mexico actually, so cool how plentiful Jamaica was, the abundance!! Just amazing ❤️
Thailand is the biggest exporter of roselle so I guess it grows a lot but I can’t say I see it often when in Thailand. Depends of region I guess
