Im a grandma that is raising 3 grandchildren. The oldest will be 9 in few months. He has ADHD and some learning issues. Loves math but really struggles with reading, spelling and phonics. Has modified curriculum at school.

Thanks for your support. I am having issues with my 13 years old son reading. He is reading at grade 3 level. I am so stressed out my it. When he reads I realize that he is reading from recollection. He is not pronouncing his words especially with more complex words. I listened do your dyslexic video and I don’t think that he is. However things are wrong somewhere.
What can I do to help him learn to pronounce his words and read

Hello, I'm a homeschool parent. I'm in practically the same situation with my 14 year old grandson who has memorized at least a 1,000 words! I noticed the problem when we got to 3-4 syllable words. I made sure he knew the 44 sounds and the 6 or 7 syllable types; how to rhyme words; how to add, delete, substitute sounds in syllables or words he already knows; how to divide 1-syllable words he knows into sounds, and multisyllable words he knows into syllables. And he fooled me throughout all of this!! 🤯Only when I started using nonsensical syllables and long, unfamiliar words did I discover that he could not sound out syllables letter by letter. When he was unable to show me which particular letter(s) made a specific sound, I discovered that he memorized words by shape, spelling, and syllable division and that his fluency was subpar because he was recalling words instead of reading them. So now, I'm using drills of the 44 sounds and sounding out nonsensical words and long, unfamiliar words so he can make the connection between the letters and sounds. I will get some decodable books because he probably needs the repetition to improve fluency as Allison indicated. Hopefully, my experience will give you an idea of what to look out for.

With sight words, would that come before or after learning cvc words?

Hi, Rebecca! Learning sight words is an ongoing process, so the answer would be both. :) If you want more information on that, please email me at alison@learningattheprimarypond.com!
