I am 63yrs old and I am dyslexic. When I was growing up there was no special ed and no one really understood how to help me. My mother had a friend who was a reading specialist who told my parents what was wrong. I was bullied a lot in school not only by other children but also by teacher who could not understand why I wasn't learning. Some teachers would work with me and some made me feel stupid and would embarrass me in front in class. I work well with patterns. I have very poor short term memory but really good long term. Taking notes in class was really hard. I have to see it or hear it but I can't do both at the same time. So I would sit next to a friend and copy their notes (it helps that I am lefty and most are righty). My spelling still sucks. My mother read most of my high school work to me...once I can hear it I can pretty much spit it back. I am now a special education teacher who specializes in reading. Since becoming a teacher my skills have improved because what I do with children I also do with myself. I believe teaching age appropriate material...my problem is that the older a child gets the less material there is to work with. It bothers me to give a 14yr old person The Cat in the Hat.
That is so tough - I am SO sorry you had to go through all of that! I love that you were able to overcome so much and ended up helping kids with the same struggles. And yes, it is hard to find age appropriate materials. HI-LO books and Wilson are good resources for this.
I didn't over come dyslexia...I learned to live with it. Because it doesn't always involve reading...I have trouble judging distances and it takes me a second or two longer to process information. I also read. There is always a book on my desk and the children see me reading. I still read physical books. I do the crypoquote and the jumble in the morning newspaper. My favorite tool is my Franklin Speller.@@readingsoswithalison
My daughter is 7. She came home crying the other day because she said all her friends and classmates can read and she can’t. She’s in tutoring and we read at home. She has strong signs of dyslexia. I am going to download your guide. Thank you for helping parents like me.
I'm so sorry to hear that, Carrie. I'm sure that's heartbreaking for you both. Please reach out if you have any questions or need additional support. ❤
Hi, Jessica! I'm sorry you and your son are going through that. ❤If you'd like to email me to chat more about your situation, you can reach me at Alison@learningattheprimarypond.com.
Yes 2nd grade. She has memory problems. We study the sounds and when I ask her to say the sounds her self she doesn’t remember. The school is already asking to place her in a different school. She does get help at school and also has a tutor, I also help her at home. It really is very frustrating.
That IS so frustrating, and I'm sorry you're going through this. If it is a public school in the U.S., I would request (in writing) that she be evaluated for special education services. Feel free to email me at Alison@learningattheprimarypond.com and I can send you some suggestions and resources for things to do at home!
@@readingsoswithalison yes, I requested an IEP and she is getting help, but it’s really hard for her. I had a meeting this week and they said that they want to place her on a small group but they don’t have that services there so they are moving her to a different school. She does go to a public school and I am in the US. THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING to my message!
Yes. My daughter is 7 years old and in first grade. We feel that there's a strong chance that she may have dyslexia. She should be in second grade. She's really struggling with reading, writing, spelling, blending, and understanding context. She has recently been diagnosed as having ADHD and ODD.

Hi, Regina! I'm happy to help. Can you please email Alison@LearningAtThePrimaryPond.com? I will ask you some questions and provide some recommendations. :)
My daughter just turned 7. She hates reading and struggles to read and write. I am making her read 20 min every day starting yesterday, but I am still worried...
I'm not even sure where to put my daughter in terms of reading. We just started homeschooling kindergarten (she's almost 6) and while there are some concepts she picks up easily she gets frustrated really fast and I'm not sure where exactly the problem is. So we're in this limbo of her almost being ready to read in some ways, and not in others. Since I'm homeschooling, I'm trying to make sure I educate myself as much as possible so I can provide the flexibility and support she needs. I honestly don't know what that looks like, though. 🫤
Hey, Kathryn! I totally understand your concerns. If you'd like to email me at alison@learningattheprimarypond.com, I'd love to make some recommendations to get you starting strong this school year. ❤
