    So my eight year old daughter shows me a book and asks me how to pronounce the authors name and it’s Chassahowitzka. I say ok what you wanna do is sound it out and break it down into little words. After a few mins of further explanation I say you know what let’s look up a UA-cam video cuz I’m not teacher lol. Well this video was absolutely perfect, I’m not the best at explaining things, especially to my children so I love how there’s easy to understand videos like these on UA-cam to assist me in teaching my babies.

      Names of people and places don't necessarily follow the phonics rules. I tell the readers that we don't mean any disrespect, but we can just use the first initial for the unfamiliar names. It's normal to not know how to pronounce names. They are very personal!

      @@MelissaDietz-b3i Yes, since parents can spell names and pronounce them however they wish, names can certainly be a challenge. Places, too! I have my kids sound them out the best they can and just know that they can just go with that until corrected.

    I laughed when you said your student's would guess the rest of the word after the first division, I guess that doesn't go away. I stress my desire for their ability to read independently and want to make the most of 2 hours. Your thought's or direction would be greatly appreciated.

      I love that you are helping adults who slipped through the cracks and haven’t learned to read yet. It is never too late for people to learn. Email me at Katy@KidsCanReadandWrite.com and we can talk more about what I would recommend. I’ll need to hear more about what they are able to read/not read at this point before steering you in any direction, but typically, you just need to teach them the “tricks” as well as a good blending technique to get them going. If you are working with dyslexic learners (which you probably are), you will want to teach very explicitly and systematically, introducing a limited number of “tricks” at a time so that the information can be practiced and stick. You’ll want to make sure to cover spelling as well. As you add “tricks” and practice reading/writing with them, their ability will grow. Once they can decode and encode most words accurately, you can really get into the comprehension side. Hope this helps! Email me for more if you’d like! I’d love to help in any way that I can.

    This is VERY technical. Thank you for going through it! To help add gross motor movement, I tape off several (5 or 6?) tiles for the student to step or jump with each syllable they see/say. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking for education about teaching adult ESL with low literacy skills. I need help so I'm looking for resources. Not finding anything for adults so I'm here looking for children.
    I am earning a BA in linguistics. 2 classes left! They unfortunately don't teach phonics in my program. But I did get other training, like phonetics and general linguistics. One thing I learned is that English is a language where we prefer to start syllables with the consonant. This is pretty important. It's specific to English.
    So I really liked this video, especially how you talk about connecting or gluing the vowel to the next letter, the tricks, and the way you segment with boxes and underline things with arrows. I like that you teach ER as a whole sound, thats awesome and I will take that with me.
    But I disagree with how you segmented every word here. Maybe that's a dialect difference, or maybe you are avoiding 4 letter chunks. I don't know. But what I do know is this: I say things differently than how you're teaching these words to be broken up.
    I say con fi dent.
    (Not con fid ent).
    I say per se vere.
    (Not per sev ere).
    And I say a ccom plish.
    (Not ac com plish).
    And I say the a in accomplish with a like "a cup of mustard", "the," or the "uh sound." (Its phonetic name is the schwa, [ə], not [æ]) Not a like "apple" or "black."
    Also I think people would be very supported if they learned 2 syllable words first before doing 3 syllables. If possible.
    Anyway thank you for your video and your hard work. ❤🎉

      @kidscanreadandwrite2119  6 місяців тому

      @@Michelle-x5l Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. I’m so glad you found the video to be helpful.
      I have found that many beginning and/or struggling readers need an easy way to attack words that doesn’t require a lot of memory; that’s why I teach how to break up the words like that. It helps them figure out the word because they just need to hear all of the parts; the brain usually helps them adjust it into however they actually say it after that. It’s kind of like a basic recipe that you can alter as needed to fit your tastes. The alternative is to memorize all the syllable types and go from there, but that often slows down the process and causes a lot of extra work and confusion. But I mostly work with English speakers who struggle with memory and processing issues.
      Good luck with your teaching! Knowing phonics is key to unraveling the code. We have so many letters that work together to make new sounds. Learn those and pass along that info when you teach. There will be exceptions, but those are a lot easier to deal with when you can easily decode 80-85% of the words.
      All the best and much success!
      Katy

    • @kidscanreadandwrite2119
      @kidscanreadandwrite2119  8 місяців тому +2

      Yes, that is correct! Dictionaries show the “official” way to separate the word, but there are many ways to actually break it up to read it. I teach kids struggling to read and write the “easiest way” so that they can be successful. Sometimes this means breaking the word in slightly different places for the simplicity of where to break words, but, in the end, it usually works out. Since I generally work with native English speakers, most are able to hear the word once sounded out and pronounce it correctly. Hope that answers your question! Thanks for chiming in!😊

    Why does it say short vowel i in stead of long vowel i as in hide

    • @kidscanreadandwrite2119
      @kidscanreadandwrite2119  4 місяці тому

      @@lilyjoon5699 In which word are you referring to? In general, a vowel will make the short sound unless it has a reason to say its name. “Tricks” (like e at the end of hide, er, ing, ed endings, le endings, etc) love to “boss” vowels if they can reach them. They can generally only go over one letter to do so. If a vowel comes at the end of an “open syllable”, it will often say its name as well. Does that help?
